The development of a habitus shock model for architect-client relationships on house projects

Chen, Jessica January 2008 (has links)
Masters Research - Master of Philosophy (Architecture) / The widening gap between architects and clients and the associated problems in the management of their relationship have long been recognised by practitioners and researchers alike. Researchers tend to develop prescriptive models to provide some overall systematic strategy to those seeking guidance. Such models assume that the architect-client relationship can be systematically structured which is a highly optimistic, if not unrealistic view of the situation. An emerging trend has been to develop descriptive models to describe behavioural characteristics of successful and unsuccessful relationships based on observations of ‘real world’ practice. Such descriptive models indicate the significance of understanding the complexities of the social environment in which the architect-client relationship is within. This research built upon the work of past descriptive models by exploring the architect-client relationship on house projects with a focus on the client’s voice. It is positioned within an interdisciplinary approach drawing from sociological and psychological perspectives to further our understanding of this built environment industry problem. Sixty-nine percent of architects in Australia spend some of their work time on house projects and therefore improvements in this area can have significant impact on a considerably large portion of the profession. Habitus theory borrowed from sociology highlighted that the nature of architecture as a specialised activity places architects within an architectural habitus, distinguishing architects from clients who are not trained in the architectural field. An underlying premise of this study was that a mismatch between the architect and client’s habituses occurs as they enter into a relationship on the house project. This phenomenon was termed habitus shock, referring to the client’s experience of disorientation as they are confronted with an unfamiliar architectural habitus on the project. Culture shock theory was examined for its contribution to explain the process to which the client adjusts to the unfamiliar environment during habitus shock. The habitus shock model proposed that the client may achieve learning during habitus shock and it is this client learning that leads to successful relationships. Using the qualitative approach underpinned by the constructivist perspective for data collection and analysis, eight in-depth interviews were conducted across five case studies of successful architect-client relationships. The narrative inquiry approach was used to establish the extent to which habitus shock occurred and to describe the stages involved in the client’s adjustment process during habitus shock. The findings indicate that habitus shock occurred on all five case studies, which resulted in client learning, enabling clients to function with competency in the unfamiliar environment. Client learning achieved during habitus shock was directly linked to the amount of difficulty experienced. This study has refined our understanding of the architect-client relationship on house projects by exploring more deeply client behaviour and the ways in which clients successfully deal with difficulties on house projects rather than simply identifying the uncertainties and conflicts that occur on projects. The findings demonstrate that client learning during habitus shock is a characteristic of successful relationships. One of the most significant outcomes of this study is that it demonstrated the potential to facilitate client learning during habitus shock to contribute to the development of successful architect-client relationships. It also indicates the potential for further development of the model and methodology by suggesting potential areas for future research.

Traditioner : Jag vill inte längre vara Lucia

Rocén, Åsa January 2015 (has links)
After making an observation that young people wish to maintain traditions, but they themselves do not wish to attend, lead to a curiosity to examine if traditions serve any purpose for the young people of today. The discrepancies between that the young people say that it is important to preserve traditions versus that themselves do not wish to participate leads us to believe that traditions fills some kind of function but the question is – What function is this? The purpose of this research is to find out what purpose traditions have for young people and also look for the answer to why young people refrain from participating in certain traditions. The results are built from answers from interviews with 36 young people (19 girls and 17 boys) in the ages of 17 – 19 years old. Theoretical frames that helps answer the questions in this paper are represented by theories from Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu, Émile Durkheim and Erving Goffman. The results shows that traditions fills the following function, - maintaining social relationships and connections at different times and in different contexts, - contributing to interaction and connectedness, - legitimately be allowed to be family-oriented, - opportunity to provide a desirable appearance and a desired identity. The results also shows that traditions have a function to exclude when a person is not included in a social context The results show that choosing to refrain from participating has to do with that we live in a post–traditional society that opens up opportunities to make choices. Our desire to keep traditions is based on our upbringing and in our habits

Hafeez, Haneesha January 2015 (has links)

The research aims to analyze the trajectory of the agent seeking to unveil such aspects. It is an autobiographical procedure that seeks to describe the transformations that occurred in my career, considering familiar, social, cultural and musical aspects that influenced to a great extent, the decisions that directed me in the role of violin teacher at the Federal University of Cariri. In this sense, the objective of the research is to understand the constitution of the teaching staff habitus of a degree course in music. Thus, looking at the past of formation, the concepts of the praxisology of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu about the habitus, field, social, cultural and financial capital as a tool to illuminate this analysis are considered. Life History and Praxiology are two research traditions that help to understand this research. In this way, my trajectory demonstrates the process of acquiring a habitus that extrapolates the idea of reproduction of the existence conditions; at the same time, that this context denies my probable destiny allows me to postulate the following thesis: “the inadaptation of the primary habitus, combined with strategies and the contact with key elements in the musical field led me as agent to occupy a prominent position in this field”.

The analysis considers football as a field, in terms used by Pierre Bourdieu, a space defined by the competition of a very symbolic capital and specific forms of consecration. Based on the opinions of the fans in sports radio programs and discussions in online forums, as well as the observation of meetings held by the MITT, it was observed that, since its founding, the group has gained prestige and is considered by fans as a model to be followed. This growth in the value of the association, in this social space where the gift, the giving without expecting something in return, the sacrifice in the name of something bigger(the club) and the suppression of individual interests are considered supreme values, has been achieved from two modes of public expression of disinterest: first, for some financial gain, explained by the constant publication in the media of the benefits of account of what is collected from the fans, and finally by renouncing the pursuit of consecration, i.e., by the very specific form of symbolic capital at stake.

The goal of the present work is to understand and discuss the formation and behavior of the small and average production of cachaça in the insides of São Paulo. I pursue for understanding and debating how the productive agent charactize itself becoming remarkable inside the cachaça Market, analyzing it in its social dimension, of great singularities and disparate competitiveness. I focus on the producers that are not inside the law and therefore are called informal. I support the ideia of informality associated to the habitus and the practice of these workers, considering that, according to the Ministration of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of the brazilian goverment, this sector represents 85% of the national production of liquor. The search that was developed is based on the producers profile in the setting of a countrified reconfiguration and transformation of these Markets and the production of cachaça itself. This work’s purpose was for understanding and debating the informality as a way of alternative resistence to the bureaucratic hurdles and normalization of the activities.
