Maskulinitet : en kvalitativ studie om hur maskulinitet kan konstrueras bland unga män, som är aktiva inom lagidrotten fotboll, analyserat ur ett genusperspektiv

This is a qualitative study about how young men in the age of 16-18 years can construct their masculinity. How do these young men describe a “real man”? What are their thoughts about themselves as adults? The purpose of this study includes a gender perspective in surroundings that cope with the sport football. To answer this study, six young men in the age of 16-18 years, whom are active football players in different levels, have been interviewed. The findings showed that the young men seemed to construct their masculinity in cooperation with the surroundings and the nearest family members seemed to have a very strong influence of the boy’s development to become a man. The results even indicated that the young men construct their masculinity by distancing themselves from what seems not to be masculine, for example male homosexuals.

"We Don't Want the Loonies Taking Over": Examining Masculine Performatives by Private Security in a Hospital Setting

After sixteen intensive months, I quit my employed position as a security guard at a local hospital. By drawing on my autoethnographic experiences in the form of “ethnographic fiction writing”, as well as eight interviews with my former male colleagues, I explore how the guards’ constructions of masculinity intersect with their security assessment and subsequent application of force, chemical incarceration, and other coercive security tactics on involuntarily-committed mental health patients. The narratives are framed by the available literature on gender and masculinity within the security, police, prison and military institutions, as well as the theoretical notions of gendered institutions (Acker), hegemonic masculinity (Connell & Messerschmidt), doing gender (West & Zimmerman), and Dave Holmes’s application of Foucauldian biopolitical power to forensic healthcare settings. These concepts are used in tandem with a creative methodological tool to reveal the “messy”, “bloody” and “gendered” ways in which hospital life unfolds between the guard, the nurse, and the patient prisoner. By escaping more traditional forms of academic writing, I am able to weave raw, sensitive and reflexive thoughts and emotions into the research design and analysis. The analysis is divided into two narratives: “Us” and “Them”. “Us” emphasizes the gendered ways in which the hospital guard learns, reproduces, resists, lives up, or fails to live up to the masculine codes of the profession. Here, the guard must confront cultural demands to demonstrate physical prowess, authority and heroism during a patient battle. “Them” explores how hegemonic masculinity shapes the hierarchical and coercive relations between the guard, the nurse, and the patient, and reinforces psychiatrized discourses that promote punishment, pain, bureaucracy and control. Overall, these findings call for the abolition of physical restraint, chemical incarceration and other coercive security measures within our healthcare institutions, and encourage future research to give voice to the lived experiences of women guards and security management teams.

By the late 1990s, a democratisation project has come to the agenda in Turkey in relation to a possible membership to the European Union. This thesis analyses this democratisation project with special reference to the reports published by T&Uuml / SiAD accordingly. Within the scope of the thesis, as well as the theoretical bases of the reports, the motives behind T&Uuml / SiAD&amp / #8217 / s support for this project will also be dealt with. It will be argued that, in order to grasp the specificity of both the democratisation project and T&Uuml / SiAD&amp / #8217 / s support for it, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the historical process that these take place in / and, some key developments at the national and international contexts will be investigated in this direction. For this investigation, a relational approach based upon Nicos Poulantzas&amp / #8217 / s state theory and Bob Jessop&amp / #8217 / s conceptualisation of hegemonic project will be made use of. The implications that the subject matters have for the form of state, form of regime, and class relations will be elaborated on.

Yet, when autobiography becomes social and is used to engage political communities of color, political transformation is possible. This project, through the collaborative visualization of Asian American social biography using pedagogical and relational methods as a means for engagement, seeks to destabilize dominant notions of time and space, and provide a mechanism for the retention of and documentation of institutional, and social histories using the Asian American Student Union at Scripps College as the site for political praxis.

En kvalitativ metod har använts och sex intervjuer har utförts. De teoretiska utgångspunkterna är genus, maskulinitet och det hegemoniska perspektivet. Resultatet framhäver att respondenterna är medvetna om de föreställningar som finns i samhället. Detta är något som de måste förhålla sig till i mötet med de utsatta männen. The results demonstrate that the respondents are aware of the conceptions that exist in society. This is something that they must relate to in the meeting with exposed men. The conceptions about men, who become a victim of domestic violence in close relationships is also something that can affect men, for example shame can occur when men seek professional help. We have also chosen to look at how social workers work and what it is that primarily govern their work. This study claims that there has been realized an obvious transformation in the way in which the Cyprus question is perceived and handled in Turkey, both in official state policy and popular opinion, during 2000s. It is aimed in this study to depict this transformation with its different dimensions and analyze this transformation with a historical perspective in terms of the actors and dynamics involved. The social and political dynamics which brought about such a transformation are investigated and the positions and attitudes of certain social actors, with special reference to big capital and its representative T&Uuml / SiAD, are disclosed within the scope of this study. It is maintained in this study that in order to understand and analyze the transformation in the Cyprus policy of Turkey and the public opinion, it is necessary to relate this process with general political atmosphere of the country as well as the hegemonic visions/projects/opinions of the period. In this case, it is actually impossible to understand and analyze the transformation of the official policy and public opinion on Cyprus separate from the EU membership project specifically in 2000s. This study analyzes this transformation as a dimension of a general process that is the construction of EU membership objective as a hegemonic project. Antonio Gramsci&rsquo / s theory of hegemony and Bob Jessop&rsquo / s conceptualization of hegemonic project have been utilized in this analysis.

Hegemony now! : an examination of the Tea Party's hegemonic project / Examination of the Tea Party's hegemonic project

The Tea Party’s influence in the recent 2010 elections suggests that the group is making an impact within American politics. This project seeks to identify the cultural forces at work and ground them within Antonio Gramsci’s framework of hegemony. Taking a cue from Michael Bérubé’s recent book The Left at War, I perform a close analysis of the Tea Party’s project for hegemony. I focus on the media discourses of the Tea Party movement, performing a close reading of two key Tea Party websites and unpacking two important televised moments relating to the Tea Party’s rise as a grassroots movement. I argue that the Tea Party uses the practice of articulation to persuade the American public that Tea Party members are the rightful heirs to the project of “America” that the Founding Fathers began centuries ago by using the theories of Bérubé, Stuart Hall, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe as reference points. Finally, I use my analysis of the Tea Party’s articulatory practices to begin exploring a way forward for the American Left, building on the groundbreaking cultural work of Bérubé, Hall, and Laclau and Mouffe. / text

Societies are surrounded by unaware attitudes and views about what is masculine and what is feminine and this can contribute to people being raced differently. Boys and girls are shaped to think and act in different ways from an early age because of their gender. According to the curriculum in the Swedish school system, the school has an important task to prevent such perceptions young people have about sex and gender. Reading books are still a central source where students gather information in the Swedish school. Therefore, I find it interesting to examine how gender is produced in three Swedish reading books from three different periods (1950s, 1970s and 2000s) to see what similarities and differences there are between the texts and the study has been based on three questions: How are men/boys and women/girls described in the reading books based on their characteristics, interests and pursuits? How much space in the texts are represented by men/boys and by women/girls? What masculinities and femininities can be found in the texts and which ones are the most desirable? I have used a text analysis in my research to analyse the three reading books and based my theory on that gender is a social construction. My results show that the three reading books produce male and female structures based on the fact that men and women, boys and girls are opposites and are kept apart by qualities, pursuits and interests. Notions of what is masculine and feminine are also reflected in the texts by constructions of hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity. Further constructions concerning gender in the reading books are that men and boys have more space than women and girls and also that the personalities of men and boys grow at the expense of women and girls.

L’augmentation grandissante de l’attention portée dans les études sur la masculinité tant à la littérature féminine qu’à ses auteurs incite les chercheurs à se pencher de nouveau sur l’icône qu’est le gentilhomme, sur la réponse qu’offre la littérature du XVIIIe siècle face à cette idéalisation de la masculinité, et comment ces standards ont contribué à façonner nos propres perceptions des différenciations des rôles sexuels. Ce mémoire présente une analyse des personnages masculins des romans de Jane Austen, Emma, Persuasion et Mansfield Park, à travers le concept de « masculinité hégémonique » de R.W. Connell, concept qui a eu un impact certain dans les recherches retraçant comment l’histoire et l’hégémonie ont fabriqué les attentes sociales et nationales envers l’homme anglais. Les livres expliquant la conduite à avoir pour être un gentilhomme viril ont sans aucun doute perpétué ces idéaux. À travers l’étude de la politesse, de la sincérité et de l’héroïsme, perpétuellement renouvelés afin de correspondre aux nouveaux idéaux de la masculinité, cette thèse étudie les livres éducatifs influents, notamment de Locke, Knox et Secker, afin de comprendre de quelle façon la masculinité hégémonique est devenue une partie intégrante du discours et de l’éducation à l’époque de la Régence anglaise. This thesis analyses male characters in Jane Austen’s Emma, Persuasion and Mansfield Park under the scope of R.W. Connell’s concept of “Hegemonic Masculinity,” a concept that has been influential in the study of how history and hegemony influence social and national expectations of English masculine character. Conduct books that instructed genteel men how to be a manly gentleman perpetuated these ideals. Through the study of how politeness, sincerity, and heroism were continuously transformed to incorporate new ideals of manhood, this thesis examines influential conduct books by Locke, Knox, and Secker in order to understand how hegemonic masculinity became an essential part of Regency masculine education and discourse. Austen’s works highlight the vulnerability of hegemony by reminding the reader about the importance of human experience and growth regardless of gender. Nevertheless, her novels respond to appropriate education that instructs on principle, self-governance, industry, and sincerity, all of which, as the history addressed in this thesis demonstrates, also belonged to ideals of English nationalism and masculinity.

The school curriculum of the middleclass school is marked by hegemonic ideology, that tries to hide the class struggle under the aegis of scientific neutrality. Thus, this research puts itself in opposition to the movement called "Escola sem Partido". The question that guides this research refers to the recognition of the existence of the working classes own ideology and tries to understand their aspects and features, as well as the legitimation of such ideology through the counter-hegemonic curriculum to be implemented in public and popular schools. The study assumes that there is a popular ideology built on the everyday experiences of exploitation and oppression of the lower classes, revolts generators. However, when establishing the common sense, that ideology, in itself, is not able to generate a class consciousness. For this reason, it is emphasized the importance of its questioning in the popular and public school curriculum. In this context, the central objective of this research is to contribute to the development of a transformative curriculum. Considering the above, it was tried to conduct a literature review from the theoretical contributions of Antonio Gramsci and Paulo Freire, on the themes popular ideology and school curriculum, using as a basis for this debate the ideas of the French Marxist Alain Badiou. The research counted, too, with a field research in which there have been four semi-open interviews with renowned Brazilian intellectuals: Gaudêncio Frigotto, José Eustáquio Romão, Luiz Antonio Cunha and Claudio de Oliveira Ribeiro. The study made it possible to confirm the hypothesis presented here and infer, therefore, that a public and popular school can not be made possible following the same curriculum and values of middleclass school / O tema desta pesquisa, de cunho qualitativo, centra-se na política educacional, de modo especial, sobre a pertinência do desenvolvimento de uma ideologia a ser desencadeadora de um currículo específico, voltado à educação pública e popular. O currículo escolar da escola burguesa é marcado pela ideologia hegemônica, que procura esconder a luta de classes sob a égide da neutralidade científica. Assim, esta pesquisa coloca-se em contraposição ao movimento denominado de “Escola sem Partido”. O problema que norteia a presente investigação refere-se ao reconhecimento da existência de uma ideologia própria das classes populares e busca compreender suas marcas e características, bem como a legimitação de tal ideologia por meio dos currículos contra-hegemônicos a serem implementados nas escolas públicas e populares. O estudo parte do pressuposto de que existe uma ideologia popular construída nas experiências cotidianas de exploração e opressão das classes subalternas, geradoras de revoltas. Em face do exposto, buscou-se realizar uma revisão bibliográfica a partir das contribuições teóricas de Antonio Gramsci e Paulo Freire, sobre as temáticas ideologia popular e currículo escolar, utilizando como fundamento para esse debate as concepções do marxista francês Alain Badiou. A investigação contou, também, com uma pesquisa de campo, na qual foram realizadas quatro entrevistas semiabertas com renomados intelectuais brasileiros: Gaudêncio Frigotto, José Eustáquio Romão, Luiz Antonio Cunha e Claudio de Oliveira Ribeiro. O estudo possibilitou confirmar a hipótese ora apresentada e inferir, portanto, que uma escola pública e popular não pode ser viabilizada seguindo o mesmo currículo e valores da escola burguesa.
