L’époque hellénistique est le moment où les villes d’Ionie et de Carie changent peu à peu d’aspect. Dans chaque ville ou presque, quantité de monuments publics nouveaux façonnent progressivement un paysage urbain inédit qui se présente comme un miroir de la cité qui l’a créé. C’est cette transformation sans précédent des centres urbains durant l’époque hellénistique que cette thèse se propose d’étudier, en portant attention aux villes d’Ionie et de Carie dans toute leur diversité. Elle cherche à dégager le sens des changements dans deux régions à l’hellénisation ancienne et fortement urbanisées, caractérisées par des interactions entre cités et rois hellénistiques. Cette étude propose des pistes pour mieux comprendre les sociétés civiques au travers d’un lieu de vie : la ville. L’approche privilégie ce que la ville a de plus remarquable, ses édifices publics. Dans une première partie consacrée aux fortifications urbaines, aux lieux qui abritent les activités politiques, et aux espaces de la vie culturelle au sens large, les monuments publics sont évoqués en tant qu’espaces de la vie civique, et l’on s’interroge sur les raisons de la construction de tant de bâtiments nouveaux. Dans un second temps, une étude plus transversale de l’espace urbain décrit comment se met en place à cette époque un cadre de vie véritablement urbain, avec un paysage, des aménagements et une organisation de l’espace bien spécifique. La troisième partie consacrée aux thématiques économiques montre comment la prospérité des cités se traduit dans la pierre : la construction de bâtiments pour abriter les activités économiques témoigne autant du souci des cités de développer et d’encadrer ces activités que de la richesse de la vie économique des poleis. Ce dynamisme contribue aussi à expliquer une activité de construction soutenue, rendue possible par l’existence de ressources abondantes et variées à la disposition des cités. La réflexion porte pour finir sur la dimension politique et sociale des transformations de l’espace urbain. Cette dernière partie se place dans une perspective historique plus large, celle de l’évolution de la cité hellénistique. / The Hellenistic period is the time when the aspect of the cities of Ionia and Caria is changing gradually. In almost each city, an amount of new public buildings progressively shaping a new urban landscape that looks like a mirror of the city that created it. It is this unprecedented transformation of urban centers during the Hellenistic period that this thesis studies, with attention to the cities of Ionia and Caria in all their diversity. We aim at making sense of the changes in these two regions, which experienced hellenisation and urbanisation early ; they are also characterized by interactions between cities and Hellenistic kings. This study suggests ways of understanding civic societies through the city. We are looking at t the most remarkable features of the city : its public buildings . In the first part devoted to urban fortifications, buildings housing political activities , and areas of cultural life , public monuments are mentioned as spaces of civic life , and we search for the reason why many new buildings were built. Then, the study describes how urban space becomes a place of truly urban life, with a landscape, facilities and a specific spatial organization. In a third section, we show how the cities’ economic prosperity is reflected in stone buildings – some of them housing economic activities – reflects the will of cities to develop and oversee economic activities and the wealth of the poleis. This also helps explain a sustained construction activity made possible by the existence of abundant and varied resources available to cities. Finally, the reflection deals with political and social aspects of the evolution of urban space. This last part is placed in a broader historical perspective, that of the evolution of the Hellenistic city.

Some reflections on ancient Greek attitudes to children as revealed in selected literature of the pre-Christian era

This study examines the ancient Greeks’ attitudes to children during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The investigation is limited to literary sources in selected pre-Christian texts. Problems which might bias interpretation have been noted. Parent-child relationships, as revealed in literary examples of parental love and concern, are of particular interest. Hazards affecting survival in early childhood, and factors which influenced attitudes regarding the fetus, abortion, exposure and infanticide are considered. Legal, political and socio-economic factors are amongst motivating forces. Childhood experiences such as education, sport, pederasty, step-families, slaves and slavery, preparation for marriage, and deprivation due to war and environmental factors are also examined. Ancient attitudes to children are compared with modern attitudes to children in similar situations prevailing in Western culture in the 21st century. The findings reveal that basic human behaviour has changed little over the millennia; however, factors influencing attitudes have undergone some change as society evolved.

The development of Jewish ideas of angels : Egyptian and Hellenistic connections, ca. 600 BCE to ca. 200 CE

Thesis (PhD (Ancient Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This dissertation sets out to test the hypothesis that Egyptian and Hellenistic connections to Jewish beliefs about the functioning of angels facilitated the reception of Christianity. The method of investigation involved a close reading, combined with a History of Religions methodology, of certain texts with marked angelological content. The presence of certain motifs, especially “throne” and “sun/fire”, which were identified as characteristic of angelic functioning, were compared across the entire spectrum of texts. In this way the diachronic development of major angelological motifs became apparent, and the synchronic connections between the respective cultural contexts became noticeable. The course the research followed is reflected in the list of Contents. Ancient Egyptian myth and ritual associated with solar worship, together with Divine Council imagery, provides a pattern of mediation between heaven and earth via two crucial religious concepts which underly Jewish beliefs about the functioning of angels: 1) the concept of a supreme God as the king of the Gods as reflected in Divine Council imagery, and 2) the unique Egyptian institution of the king as the divine son of god (also related to the supremacy of the sun god). The blending of these two concepts can be seen in Ezekiel 1 and 10, where the throne of God is the source of angelic mediation between heaven and earth. An important stimulus to change was the vexed issue of theodicy, which in the traumatic history of the Israelites / Jews, forced new ways of thinking about angels, who in some contexts were implicated in evil and suffering on earth. In the hellenistic period, attainment to the throne of God in heaven becomes the goal of heavenly ascent, reflected in various ways in all three cultural contexts, and specifically by means of merkabah mysticism in the Jewish context; the basic concern is deification of human beings. It was this seminal cultural mixture which mediated Christianity as an outcome of Jewish angelology. The characteristic ambiguity of Jewish descriptions of angelic appearances, as reflected in the Hebrew Bible and in the Book of Revelation, functioned purposefully in this regard. Analysis of the distribution of angelological motifs amongst the Christian texts reflects Jewish angelological traditions, both in terms of merkabah mysticism in the Letter to the Hebrews, and in angelomorphic appearances of Jesus in the Book of Revelation.

Theology and identity of the Egyptian Jewish diaspora in Septuagint of Isaiah

The Old Greek version of the Book of Isaiah (hereafter LXX-Is) should be studied not only as a translation but also as an interpretation reflecting the theology of the translator or translator’s community in Egypt. ‘Free’ translation in LXX-Is usually appears not to originate from any misunderstanding of the probable Hebrew Vorlage or from a different Vorlage, but deliberately and consciously. Also it is important that these Greek renderings should be dealt with in a broader context, not merely verse by verse; because the Septuagint seems to have been regarded as a religious text in itself, circulating among Jews in Egypt. The most conspicuous theme in Septuagint Isaiah is a bold declaration concerning their identity. According to this, the Jewish diaspora in Egypt is the true remnant, and their residence in Egypt should be regarded as due to God’s initiative, thus “Eisodos” instead of “Exodus” is emphasized. Such ideas may be understood as displaying an apologetic concern of the Jewish diaspora to defend their continued residence in Egypt, whereas the Bible states firmly that Jews are not to go down there. Judgments against Egypt appear more strongly than MT, and this is another expression of their identity. LXX-Is supplies a bold translation in 19:18: a temple in Egypt, called the ‘city of righteousness’. The writings of Josephus testify to the existence of the Temple of Onias in Heliopolis under the reign of Ptolemy Philometor who apparently showed great favour towards the Jews. The temple’s significance should be considered as more than a temporary shrine for local Jewish mercenaries. Rather, it aimed to be a new Jerusalem under a lawful Zadokite priest. In addition to this, LXX-Is shares some interesting and distinctive ideas with Hellenistic Jewish literature, including views on priests and sacrifice, and an attitude towards foreign kings shared by Hellenistic Jewish literature of the period. To conclude, through comparing with MT and investigating LXX-Is as it stands, this work shows that LXX-Is is not just a translation but a Hellenistic Jewish document reflecting a particular theology of at least some Jews in Egypt. LXX-Is is shown to have its place within Jewish Hellenistic literature.
