Lowering levels of heritage crime via novel chemical procedures

Wilson, Richard S. January 2017 (has links)
The work reported here focused on developing innovative ways of addressing heritage crime, and by doing so, protecting and preserving the historical assets found nationwide. The interdisciplinary focus, linking chemistry and criminology was imperative, and this connection is a novel way in which the issue of heritage crime can be addressed. A survey was completed noting the key issues faced, and helped develop and report an understanding of the general attitudes towards heritage sites across the country. The results obtained here facilitated the chemistry research from this point, channelling the investigations in the appropriate pathway, as well as justifying the work done from that point onwards. A large focus during the course of the research was that of metal theft. With this in mind, there were subsequent attempts to develop a novel and non-invasive technique, which could help lower levels of such crime at heritage sites. Early work concentrated on detecting trace levels of metals commonly found at heritage sites such as copper and lead, and their interaction with the surface of the skin. The metals were shown to form characteristically coloured complexes when reacting with components of the skin itself, thus confirming an individuals recent contact with the relevant metal. This work progressed further via analysis of the metal itself post contact with a human finger. Again, remaining non-invasive was imperative, and a technique focusing on the development of fingerprints from the surface of copper and its alloys, via utilization of gelatine lifters, was studied extensively. Optimizing this technique via a study on the effects of the environment a piece of metal was stored in prior to development via rubeanic acid solution further developed the understanding of this method. Desiccation and the resultant reduction in humidity proved to be effective in enhancing the quality of fingerprint produced. This also had potential impact outside of the heritage crime focus, with fingerprint development from surfaces such as bullet casings being a particularly noteworthy example. Studies relating to why a change in environment enhanced the quality of fingerprint developed were conducted, with several fingermark constituents being shown to react with rubeanate solution. 2 Because of high theft levels highlighted within the survey, efforts were made to produce information regarding stone samples found in a range of different environments. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used as a method of non-invasively analysing loose material from several gravestones removed via the gelatine lifters. As well as producing information unique to each piece of stone analysed, this also highlighted a novel use of the analytical equipment itself.

Catalonia Is a Country: World Heritage and Regional Nationalism / World Heritage and Regional Nationalism

Landers, Matthew Worth, 1984- 03 1900 (has links)

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Since 1975, the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia has been renegotiating its political and cultural place within Spain. The designation and promotion of places within Catalonia as World Heritage Sites-a matter over which regional authorities have competency-provides insights into the national and territorial ideas that have emerged in recent decades. This study of the selection and portrayal of World Heritage sites by Turisme de Cata1unya shows that the sites reflect a view of the region as 1) home to a distinct cultural group, 2) a place with an ancient past, and 3) a place with a history of territorial autonomy. These characteristics suggest that even though many Catalan regionalists seek a novel territorial status that is neither independent of nor subservient to the Spanish state, the dominant territorial norms of the modem state system continue to be at the heart of the Catalan nation-building project. / Committee in Charge: Dr. Alexander B. Yukon Heritage Conservation Districts: Case Studies and Strategies for Success

Jansen, Rebecca June, 1980- 12 1900 (has links)
xii, 190 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The success of heritage conservation districts as a more holistic approach to heritage resource management has been documented around the country. Yukon, Canada has expressed a desire to move beyond traditional approaches to establish district designations. Through detailed examinations of the evolution of districts and of the progression of historic sites management in Canada and the Yukon, best practices will be established and measured against the unique challenges faced in the Territory. Further, an examination of the potential benefits and challenges are discussed and measured against three case studies: downtown Dawson City, Takhini North in Whitehorse and Carcross, Yukon. The case studies provide tangible evidence for the successful implementation of heritage conservation districts as a way to preserve and enhance the Yukon's historic sites. / Committee in Charge: Dr. Michael Hibbard, Chair; Barbara Hogan

Heritage Tourism and Return Journeys: Place and Identity Construction in Korean Adoptees

Miller, Patrick 03 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the role that heritage tourism and "return journeys" play in Korean adoptee consideration of place and identity. Specifically, my research centers on the link between returns and the conceptualization of place and transnational identity. I employ mixed qualitative methodologies consisting of textual analysis and participant interviews to study the influence that scripted journeys have on adoptee perception of places of origin in relation to the adoptive countries. I analyze tour literature, brochures and media to explain the role that evocative imagery and language have on adoptee expectation of the formation of place and identity. Semi-structured interviews with journey participants and other returnees offer insight into how these tours have impacted them and inquire how they might have changed the adoptee's perspective of place, identity and belonging. This research contributes to thought in humanistic geography on the intersection of place, identity and the past in this unique diaspora.

We describe the settlement of northeastern Brazil and discuss the meaning of hinterland, as well as characterize the municipality of Bodocó and reported briefly your history inextricably linked to the fairs. We report the presence and contributions of historical cultural heritage left by the ancestors of African descent and African lands bodocoenses through the techniques of production of flour, items made of clay, leather and fibers caroá. For this we use the techniques and methods of oral history that took us along with the bibliography to realize the black presence in local history and civilization as a factor of fundamental importance to the teaching of history was also a topic of discussion in this paper where we perceive strong brand Eurocentrism over what is Brazilian, African, African descent. We propose that the heritage bequeathed to our generation by African ancestors in the city of Bodocó and present in weekly markets is subject of local history classes fulfilling what determines the Law 10.639/03 and education leading to a fair and equitable way where we can valuing cultural diversity and include the diversity of students that schools receive for bringing the classroom to their ancestry, historicity and cultural identity.

A sociolinguistic profile of the Gallo speech community

Chrimes, Adrian Paul January 2016 (has links)
This study investigates the role of the speech community in maintaining obsolescent languages in general, and Gallo in particular. A questionnaire was designed to elicit information from the Gallo speech community in three key areas: speakers’ beliefs regarding their own use of language, speakers’ attitudes towards Gallo and its status, and speaker’s own proficiency in Gallo. The sample for this study was obtained through Gallo social networks which were identified and contacted thanks to the support of Gallo organisations based in Rennes. The questionnaire was administered to a mixture of older native speakers, employed semi-speakers and student-aged learners of Gallo. The results show that level of education remains the main factor affecting speaker attitudes and language use. Speakers with higher levels of education tend to be the ones engaged in revitalisation efforts while speakers with less education maintain a distance from such activities as well as a strong allegiance to the national language. The study also highlighted the division within the speech community concerning orthographic convention. Although a highly distinct written form is viewed by some as essential to distancing Gallo from French, it would seem that the majority of the speech community prefers accessibility over distanciation. This study provides insight into the impact which a speech community can have on the vitality or obsolescence of a variety. In the case of Gallo, it shows how a group of determined individuals can be influential in maintaining an obsolescent variety despite strong and continued pressure from official institutions.

Tradição Xambá, da quase extinção a espaço de referência: um estudo antropológico sobre o Museu Severina Paraíso da Silva / Xambá tradition, from near extintion to a space of reference: an anthropological study on the Severina Paraíso da Silva Museum

Leticia Loreto Querette 02 December 2014 (has links)
The present work steamed from an anthropological study on the Severina Paraíso da Silva Museum, which is dedicated to the history and traditions of the candomblé group of Xamba Nation. It is remarkable that it is located within an african-brasilian worship house, the Terreiro de Santa Bárbara Ylê Axé Oyá Meguê, in Olinda, state of Pernambuco, Brasil. This is an example of a museum that represents the memory of a minority social group, created by its members in order to preserve their ethnic cultural heritage, and used as a political category for obtaining recognition by the current society. The study analysed the interrelations surrounding the museum, observing aspects such as its creation by its members; collection and usage of the objects; target audience; physical space and objects, especially those that have not lost their symbolic power, despite being exhibited in the museum; and the messages that were transmitted to society. Such aspects are an important thread to the understanding of the attitudes of the group members towards society and the formation of their individual and collective self-awareness, i.e., how they develop and interpret their identity as a group through the museum; as well as, to the understanding of the importance of the Museum in the construction of memory and the preservation of the ethnic identity of the Xamba group and of the black culture in Pernambuco. The main issue, however, was to determine whether the memorial and the museum, as spaces of preservation, produce in their members a sense of belonging. The research material included literature, documents and Museums publications, in-site observation at the Terreiro, videos, blueprints, formal and informal interviews with the creators of the Museum and with other group members, but mainly participant observation during visits to the Museum and during ceremonies (toques). The research revealed a section of the group that stands out due to a search for visibility as a strategy of demand for social rights. In order to legitimate their tradition, such effort makes use of categories such as authenticity and purity, benefits from the presence of researchers and celebrities, and asserts the importance of the Museum for the construction of the black cultural heritage in the State of Pernambuco. A substantial milestone in that search for visibility was the concession of the title of Urban Quilombo, a few years after the creation of the Museum, suggesting that it contributed to the recognition as the place as a space of preservation of cultural practices of African descent in Brazil. There are other elements that represent victories in the struggle for recognition, i.e., an empowerment for the group, such as the naming of the passengers terminal which was built near the perimeter of the Terreiro and within the Quilombo as Xambá. Besides the visibility for the group, the Museum brought along other gains: it creates cohesion among its members who begin to see themselves as a group, as a nation.

A critical analysis of the continued use of Georgian buildings : a case study of Darley Abbey Mills, Derbyshire

Deakin, Emmie Lousie January 2016 (has links)
This thesis undertakes a critical assessment of the impact of Statutory Legislation and UNESCO World Heritage Designation upon the sustainability and continued use of historic industrial buildings, utilising the late 18th Century Georgian Industrial Buildings of Darley Abbey Mills, Derby, as a case study. This thesis provides an indepth and longitudinal analysis of the morphology and evolution of Darley Abbey Mills between 2006-2015, during this time the assessment of whether the mills would find a sustainable and continued contemporary use has shifted from a concern that the site was slowly disintegrating with the danger of an important historical artefact being lost for ever or becoming irrevocably damaged through lack of maintenance and repair to a position where the future of the mills is looking promising. What makes Darley Abbey Mills so unusual or unique is that it possesses the highest possible levels of statutory protection, but that is also under private ownership. The initial findings in an analysis of policy documents and planning applications between 2006- 2010 was that there was limited engagement with the external heritage and conservations stakeholders or the Local Authority, an ‘umbrella of statutory protection’ was not providing barriers or protecting the site, there was just a lack of action by all parties. This changed during the period 2010-13 when the site came under new unified ownership, the new owners started to make small adaptations and repairs to the site that enabled them to encourage new tenants from the creative and artisan communities to the site, however all of this work was not authorised, nor was planning permission sought. Although there was still a lack of enforcement of what can be seen as ‘aspirational urbanism’, a dialogue was started between the owners and the wider stakeholder community. Between 2013-2015, the relationship between all of the stakeholders became more formalised and an unofficial partnership was formed between the owners and the monitoring bodies that resulted in the successful planning application to adapt the West Mills and Long Mill, which moved some of the way towards ensuring the sustainable and continued use of Darley Abbey Mills.

Entre mudanças e permanências: o uso de indicadores na avaliação de transformações arquitetônicas / Between changes and permanences: the use of indicators in the evaluation of architectural transformations

Elisa Vaz Ribeiro Moreira 11 April 2014 (has links)
In the broad field of research that a framework for relations between change and permanence in architecture can offer, this dissertation will address this question through the analysis of architectural specimens that, in an attempt to adapt to new demands of society, had modified its original configuration. More specifically, the case study of this dissertation consists in the analysis of ancient residences of Recife whose spatial configuration has been changed in order to adapt them to a new role. The analysis of such specimens aims to develop systematic methods wich will allow to objectively establish \"degrees of transformation\" regarding the spatial configurations of the old residences. The overall objective of this research is to show how the use of numerical indicators can assist in examining the changes in architectural objects and therefore can be presented as a useful instrument for checking and monitoring the integrity of these buildings.
