We start from a point of view which dialogues with musicology and connects the techniques of composition and improvisation of the bard. We aim to discuss the relationship of these techniques of composition in performance with the text that we have nowadays. Pointing traces of its construction, of its form and its style, we try to understand these interactions in poetic-musical formation of the poems.

Contra Timarco de Ésquines: tradução e estudo introdutório / \"Aeschines Against Timarchos: translation and introduction\"

Luiz Guilherme Couto Pereira 30 March 2016 (has links)
Translation and study of the speech \"Against Timarchos\", by Aeschines. The analysis focus on the trifold condition of the text, as a juridical speech, a portrait of the male sexual behavior in Classic Athens and an example of early reception of Homer\'s poetry, in a condition that differs from festivals and symposiums.

A Ilíada de Homero e a arqueologia / The Iliad of Homer and archaeology.

Camila Aline Zanon 06 March 2009 (has links)
The Iliad of Homer is generally seen as a poem about the Trojan War, which took place more than 500 years before the composition of such poem, and transmitted by oral tradition down to the moment it was written for the first time. It was hoped, therefore, that the facts narrated by its poet matched the archaeological finds for the Mycenaean Period; instead what is found in the Iliad is an ensemble of the elements of the Mycenaean society and the one contemporary to Homer, which is considered to be the eighth century B.C. The study of the relation between the Mycenaean, Proto-Geometrical, and Geometrical archaeological finds, dating from 1550 to the end of the eighth century B.C., and the Iliad of Homer is based on two different categories of sources, namely the archaeological and the literary ones, the last one being the result of an oral tradition which had preceded it. The present dissertation focuses on showing the information that can be derived from the Iliad of Homer that somehow has contributed to the archaeological interpretation and whether controversies were raised between those two kinds of sources from such a comparison, leading to a reflection about the question of either continuity or rupture of the cultural elements proper to the Mycenaean Civilization and that, in a certain way, are reflected on the later periods concerned.

Zobrazení Homérovy Odysseie v antickém výtvarném umění / Iconography of Homer's Odyssey in Greek, Etruscan and Roman Art

Kohoutová, Aneta January 2017 (has links)
This thesis discusses depictions of stories from Homer's Odyssey to ancient art. The thesis is divided into ten chapters. The first chapter is devoted to Homer and the Odyssey, where closely acquainted with Homer's perception of the person and his iconography, as well as a focus on the importance and value of his literary work. In the second chapter I try bringing different perspectives of researchers on locations of Odysseus's journey, which also briefly introduces Odysseu's stops in connection with the story. The following chapters focus on individual stories and becoming familiar with their iconography in connection with the literary pattern. I realize the extent to which individual scenes were shown from the perspective of chronological and geographical, eventually on what types of artistic monuments (vase painting, reliefs and sculpture, murals, mosaics, etc.). Together I am trying to explain the reasons for eventual higher frequency of certain themes. Keywords Homer, Odysseus, iconography, Greek Art, Etruscan Art, Roman Art

Two Movements from the Delphic Suite: A Composition for Orchestra

Walczyk, Kevin, 1964- 12 1900 (has links)
Delphic Suite is a composition for orchestra that depicts specific events narrated in Homer's epic tale, Odyssey. For the purpose of this thesis the second movement, Raid on Ismarus, has been omitted so as to focus on the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic structures of the first movement, Lament from Troy, and the third movement, Ruler of the Winds. Each of these musical parameters will be analyzed in order to illustrate the Suite's imitation of compositional techniques exemplified in the music of Homer's era, and the musical results obtained by juxtaposing those parameters upon a twentieth-century tonal scheme that provides the Suite with an eclectic ambience.

Programmatic use of rare Homeric words in the Epigrams of Callimachus

Moss, Brian William 25 January 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the programmatic use of rare Homeric words in the epigrams of Callimachus. Particular interest is taken in hupar.r Iegwnena, words that occur only once in the Homeric corpus. The initial task of the thesis is to establish context for the epigrams by placing Callimachus in his historical and cultural milieu. Then a detailed study of five key epigrams, 1, 2, 3, 34 and 54 Gow-Page (AP 12.102, 12.43. 12.1.50, 7.80 and 7.89), is undertaken. In each of these poems. Callimachus uses allusion to Homer in order to express his literary aesthetic. Callimachus explores ideas such as the tension between his role as both a scholar and a love poet. the concept of immortality through poetry, and the importance of originality and concision in the creation of poetry. These ideas are more than just themes in Callimachus' poetry: they also serve as programmatic statements for his epigrams.

L’ordre des mots chez Homère : structure informationnelle, localisation et progression du récit / Word order in Homer : information structure, localization and narrative progression

Bertrand, Nicolas 25 November 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, I study the principles of word order in Homeric Greek. As it is the case in classical prose, the fundamental principle consists in aligning constituents according to the information structure (IS) of the utterance, i.e. the expression of topic and focus relations. Topic expressions differ in their ratification status. As for focus, two constructions may be identified : a narrow focus construction, where the only element in the focus is placed immediately before the verb, and a broad focus construction, where the verb, optionally followed by other focal elements, builds up a focus domain ; the construal of this domain may be broad or narrow on its last element. Having described the expression of IS in the clause and the various contexts in which the different constructions occur, I explore the margins of the clause (pre- and postclausal positions), and I show that questions embed propositions with their own IS. In the demonstration, I make use of the prosodic partitioning of the utterance, as indicated by the position of postpositives and ratified topic expressions. Then, after studying hyperbaton in Classical and Homeric Greek, I show that tmesis, in Homer, is a kind of pseudo noun incorporation. Finally, building on this linguistic study, I reevaluate Homeric enjambment and try to identify a trope of Homeric poetry (narrative σῆμα), whereby a word (like kalós or stê/éstē) is placed in initial position in the line in order to mark the progression of the narrative.

Hybrid Renewable Energy Analysis via Homer Pro and ETAP: A case study in Venezuela

Teran Rivero, Carlos Eduardo 01 December 2020 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OFCarlos Eduardo Teran Rivero, for the Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, presented on October 15, 2020, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: HYBRID RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS ANALYSIS VIA HOMER PRO AND ETAP: A CASE STUDY IN VENEZUELA MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Arash Asrari The main objective of this project is to design a realistic hybrid renewable energy system as a micro-grid in order to supply required power to the villages of Coche Island located in Venezuela. Due to the deterioration of Venezuela’s power system, the native people inhabiting in the island frequently find themselves without electricity when there exists a shortage in supply. Considering “Margarita” as an example, the priority of the supply is always considered for the larger communities where there is any relevant issue which will leave the small communities of the Coche Island without any power. The motivation of this thesis is to propose a hybrid micro-grid located in some of the larger villages in the Coche Island using renewable energy resources (RERs) such as photovoltaic and wind turbines such that the community of the corresponding villages can locally generate power in order to cover their basic needs in normal and emergency situations. Toward this end, this thesis presents a hybrid configuration integrated with RERs to address the aforementioned challenges. The suggested frameworks are developed via two different software including ETAP (electrical transient analyzer program) and HOMER (hybrid optimization model for electric renewables), and a comprehensive comparison between the obtained results is provided to validate the effectiveness of the both software in the field of designing hybrid energy systems.

Calasiris the Pseudo-Greek Hero: Odyssean Allusions in Heliodorus' Aethiopica

Bartley, Christina Marie 24 March 2021 (has links)
This thesis seeks to analyze the Homeric allusions in the Aethiopica with an inclusive definition to explore Heliodorus’ authorial motives. To approach this project, I use textual analysis to avoid arguments rooted in assumptions of the historical context of the novel, about which we know almost nothing. I explore how links to Homer’s Odyssey are visible within the structural organization of the text and the content of the text. I also explore how the content of the novel reproduces actions and compatible settings of Odyssean characters, which therefore qualifies Heliodorus’ characters in a metaliterary commentary with Homer’s archaic epic poem. The division of Odyssean actions and traits depicted in Heliodorus’ characters introduce a new addition to the heroic legacy established by Homer and distances the hero from Greek identity. I conclude that Heliodorus’ adherences to epic conventions and departures thereof inform the subtextual commentaries conveyed in the Aethiopica.
