A comparative discourse analysis of honor-based violence in a Swedish media context

Larsson, Fredrik January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to highlight the complexity of honor-related violence and femicide in Swedish society and how it is represented in media based on who the victim and perpetrator is depending on ethnic and religious backgrounds. The thesis will be based on a comparative discourse analysis of forty Swedish media articles concerning honor killings (hedersmord) and femicide (kvinnomord) in Swedish translated to English. The analysis focuses on what is associated with each of these words concerning the victim and perpetrator and if it is interpreted as an honor killing or a femicide depending on assumptions of ethnic or religious background in majority and minority contexts. The result of the thesis presents the dichotomy of honor killings as something belonging to practices of the “other” or “non-Swedish” while femicide, being presented as something domestic within Swedish culture it is not presented as something structural or collective as honor killings are.

Heder ur ett teoretiskt perspektiv : En systematisk litteraturstudie kring hedern ur ett teoretiskt perspektiv / Honor from a theoretical point of view : A systematic literature study about honor-systems from a theoretical point of view

Al-Shimmari, Abdullah January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to understand and theorize the phenomenon of honor andhonor-systems. Honor-systems has been a widely discussed theme by different outsources.Throughout the last 20 years there has been many cases of murders rooted in the preservationof one’s honor and reputation. To understand the different factors behind honor-system,relevant theories have been carefully selected to fit the theme and direction of this study. Thechoice of method for this paper has been a qualitative literature study where the author hasexamined previous papers, reports, and other relevant studies to get an understanding of thesubject. Then the result was analyzed by two theories, a cultural theory, and a theory ofintersectionality. While researching the subject of honor-system, it has become clear that thefield of honor-systems is a researched field, there are multiple reports on the matter. Insummary the result showed that in honor-systems the biggest victim is often, women as theyare both the victim of violence and control and as the same time perpetrators. In differentcultures there are different expectations on females and males, and in in honor-systems thesystem is run as a patriarchal one. There were some key differences between the two theorieswhen trying to understand honor-systems and especially when trying to understand a culturesimpact on the individual. It has become clear that the systems of honor affect many people insociety.

The role and impact of technology in college and university honor systems

Lesperance, Shirley Dawn January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Counseling and Student Development / Christy D. Craft / An honor system is a governing body within an education system that “includes one or more of the following elements: a written pledge in which students affirm that their work will be or has been done honestly; the majority of the judiciary that hears alleged violations of academic dishonesty is compromised of students, or the chair of this group is a student; unproctored examinations; and a clause that places some degree of obligation on students to report incidents of cheating they learn about or observe” (McCabe, Trevino, & Butterfield, 2001). Institutions from high schools to major universities are establishing such systems as a way to preserve the integrity of their diplomas and degrees. Research has shown that “up to 70% of college students cheat at some point prior to graduation” (Whitley, 1998). What is more alarming is the number of these students are using technology in an attempt to get ahead. In this report, I intend to show how technology affects different aspects of honor systems. First I will briefly discuss the history of honor systems and how the changes in technology have affected them. I will define common terms and ideas associated with today’s honor systems, and then discuss how sanctioning has evolved. Next, I will explore the role changing technology plays in honor pledge/code violations. Specifically, I will address how honor systems are addressing the growing problem of technology being used in cases of academic dishonesty, unfortunate uses of new technology in the classroom, and how on-line learning is impacting the work of honor systems. Lastly, through conversations with people working in honor system offices nationwide, I will highlight the roles and impact that technology is playing on their campuses.

Thumos in Aristotle’s Politics

Morgan, Dorothy Lam 16 August 2010 (has links)
Recent interest and scholarship in the role of emotions in politics provide an opportunity for revisiting the idea of ancient Greek thumos as understood by Aristotle. In Aristotle’s Politics, thumos is a capacity of the soul for affection; it is most clearly seen in anger and righteous indignation; and it is indispensable for understanding the nature of politics. Aristotle shows that thumos motivates political actions that can be beneficial as well as destructive to the city. This ambivalence has an enormous impact on what is possible or desirable in political life and raises important questions about the extent to which thumos should be cultivated in society and in individuals. / text

The Slaves’ Devil: The Parallel between Experiences of Slavery and Christian Conversion

Render, Brandon 03 May 2017 (has links)
An evil spiritual being, often called the devil, is an antagonist in several religious traditions. The religious ideology among enslaved Africans in America allowed for the devil to play an important, and sometimes ambiguous, role in their lives. Through the examination of conversion narratives, this research intends to argue that their conversion experiences are heavily impacted by and mirrored the reality of slavery. Therefore, the enslaved people’s accounts of the devil are influenced by the power and honor attributed to the institution of slavery. The data from gathered from the narratives will be interpreted through a poststructuralist lens of power and honor. Poststructuralist theories of power and honor will reveal the significance of the devil in conversion narratives and unearth an African American understanding of the devil that is created and sustained by the systems of power and honor in American slavery.

Nietzsche on Honor and Empathy

Ganesh, Akshay 06 January 2017 (has links)
Moral philosophers like Martha Nussbaum, Philippa Foot, and Michael Weber argue for what I call the “Neo-Stoic Reading” of Nietzsche, which includes two claims: first, Nietzsche allegedly recommends the relentless pursuit of self-interest at the expense of other persons; second, he denies empathy any major role in the ethical life. I will argue that the Neo-Stoic view misses an important unifying theme in Nietzsche’s ethics and his criticism of morality—his investment in the value of honor—and that Nietzsche’s ethical recommendations involving empathy and even altruism can be better understood by situating them within an historical tradition of honor-based ethics.

Pinedo Coa, Vicente Amador January 2012 (has links)

Gutiérrez Ticse, Luis Gustavo 17 October 2016 (has links)

Shaya, Lana, Muratovic, Alisa January 2012 (has links)
