Acquisition of English Relative Clause by Taiwan EFL College Students

Chou, Yi-huei 13 February 2006 (has links)
This study set out to examine the Taiwan college students¡¦ underlying knowledge of English relative clauses in attempt to see what the factor(s) is/are that constrain(s) the learners¡¦ language acquisition process, whether it is the universal factor, the native language, or human general problem solving skill. Three predictor hypotheses were used in this investigation: NAPH, PDH, and SOHH, which are motivated by different theoretical backgrounds. The NPAH is based on the typological markedness, the PDH is based on the notion of human limited capacity of short term memory, and SOHH the combination of NPAH and PDH, and the structural difficulty of relative clause. The data from 84 non-English major college students of NSYSU were elicited using three kinds of tasks: sentence combination test, Chinese-English translation test, and grammaticality judgment test. 12 types of English relative clauses were analyzed in this study, namely SS, SO, SIO, SOPREP, SGEN, SOCOMP, OS, OO,OIO, OOPREP,OGEN, OOCOMP. In addition, the learners¡¦ avoidance strategies were extensively analyzed to see what was actually avoided as they were engaged in the formation of English relative clauses. Implicationally, the results suggest that Universal Grammar may be still operative in the minds of the adult FL language learners. Overall, we have the following findings: 1.The learners¡¦ acquisition of relative clauses is largely constrained by the universal markedness by NPAH, except GEN, and the order between IO and OPREP. 2.The retention of pronoun is largely constrained by the linguistic universals of NPAH, but Chinese also has certain influence on the learners¡¦ choice of supplying resumptive pronoun. 3.The learners largely did experience more difficulty in center-embedded relative clauses, which matches PDH. 4.Largely, SOHH is a valid prediction of the learners¡¦ acquisition of relative clauses. 5.The learners tended to avoid relativization on the positions low on the NPAH, except GEN. 6.The learners did frequently avoid OCOMP relatives and center-embedded relative clauses.

Expertise reversal effect in explanatory notes for readers of Shakespearean text

Oksa, Annishka, Education, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
In recent decades, research into human cognition has unveiled in-depth insights into the structures and processes involved in the encoding, storage and retrieval of information. As human working memory is limited in both duration and capacity, cognitive load theory (Sweller, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994; Sweller & Chandler 1994; Chandler & Sweller 1991; 1996) asserts that information should be designed in a way that does not mentally overload learners. However, instructional designs rarely take into account cognitive processes when structuring teaching materials. In fact, many traditional forms of instruction were devised prior to fundamental research into cognitive load effects. As a result, learners are often subjected to cognitive overload when required to engage in extraneous tasks that are not directly related to meaningful learning. This is a particular problem for intrinsically complex Shakespearean works, renowned to be some of the most difficult texts students may ever encounter. Acknowledging that Shakespearean texts were written for performance, they are not always studied as such. Frequently, the texts are read around the class, whereby the focus is not dramatic but literary. Therefore, under the current system of study it is necessary to investigate instruction for reading comprehension of Shakespearean texts. Reading Shakespeare's plays will often overwhelm working memory resources and cause comprehension problems due to the many interactive elements of information readers are required to process simultaneously. This is a significant issue as Shakespeare's works hold a great deal of literary, dramatic, and linguistic significance and their study forms a compulsory part of school curriculum and assessment that affects all students from English speaking nations. By tradition conventional modes of instruction for Shakespearean texts require readers to consult disparate sources of information such as footnotes and endnotes that may contain either inadequate or unnecessary detail. Having to search for relevant information and mentally integrate separate sources of text results in a split attention effect and causes high levels of unnecessary cognitive load. As a result, Shakespeare's texts continue to be such a struggle for many students that some educational faculties have started to initiate the removal of Shakespeare from curriculum instead of developing more effective instructional methods for this domain. This study applies cognitive load theory as a means of investigating the comprehension of Shakespeare by testing the effects of explanatory notes integrated line by line with original Shakespearean verse. Previous studies in cognitive load theory have indicated that restructuring material in accordance with cognitive principles can optimise learning. However, the majority of these studies have focused on technical areas.

Novel methods for constructing, combining and comparing co-expression networks: Towards uncovering the molecular basis of human cognition

Morselli Gysi, Deisy 11 April 2019 (has links)
Network analyses, such as gene co-expression networks are an important approach for the systems-level study of biological data. For example, understanding patterns of \linebreak co-regulation in mental disorders can contribute to the development of new therapies and treatments. In a gene regulatory process a particular TF or ncRNA can up- or down-regulate other genes, therefore it is important to explicitly consider both positive and negative interactions. Although exists a variety of software and libraries for constructing and investigating such networks, none considers the sign of interaction. It is also required that the represented networks have high accuracy, where the interactions found have to be relevant and not found by chance or background noise. Another issue derived from building co-expression networks is the reproducibility of those. When constructing independent networks for the same phenotype, though, using different expression datasets, the output network can be remarkably distinct due to biological or technical noise in the data. However, most of the times the interest is not only to characterise a network but to compare its features to others. A series of questions arise from understanding phenotypes using co-expression networks: i) how to construct highly accurate networks; ii) how to combine multiple networks derived from different platforms; iii) how to compare multiple networks. For answering those questions, i) I improved the wTO method to construct highly accurate networks, where now each interaction in a network receives a probability. This method showed to be much more efficient in finding correct interactions than other well-known methods; ii) I developed a method that is able to combine multiple networks into one building a CN. This method enables the correction for background noise; iii) I developed a completely novel method for the comparison of multiple co-expression networks, CoDiNA. This method identifies genes specific to at least one network. It is natural that after associating genes to phenotypes, an inference whether those genes are enriched for a particular disorder is needed. I also present here a tool, RichR, that enables enrichment analysis and background correction. I applied the methods proposed here in two important studies. In the first one, the aim was to understand the neurogenesis process and how certain genes would affect it. The combination of the methods shown here pointed one particular TF, ZN787, as playing an important role in this process. Moreover, the application of this toolset to networks derived from brain samples of individuals with cognitive disorders identified genes and network connections that are specific to certain disorders, but also found an overlap between neurodegenerative disorders and brain development and between evolutionary changes and psychological disorders. CoDiNA also pointed out that there are genes involved in those disorders that are not only human-specific.

Contribuições do Desing Thinking para concepção de interfaces de ambientes virtuais de aprendizagem centradas no ser humano / Design Thinking contributions for the conceptions of human centered virtual learning environment interfaces

Cavalcanti, Carolina Magalhães Costa 18 August 2015 (has links)
This research aims to present Design Thinking contributions for the design and development of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) interfaces focused on users needs and expectations. Literature suggests that Design Thinking uses the sensitivity and methods of designers for catalyzing collaboration, creativity and the search for innovative solutions through empathic observation, rapid prototyping and analysis on different realities. This study was based on the premise that the adoption of Design Thinking could contribute to the design and development of VLE interfaces centered on human factors, and would also meet the educational needs of those involved in teaching and learning at the undergraduate Teaching Science program (Curso de Licenciatura em Ciências - CLC), offered by the University of São Paulo / Virtual University of São Paulo. The research adopted a qualitative approach, and was carried out with 21 students, two teachers and 16 tutors who took part in focal groups and interviews to discuss, propose solutions and improvements to the programs VLE interfaces. Understanding the participants needs led to the creation of a prototype consisting of alternative interfaces for VLE. The research participants were presented to the prototype and offered suggestions to improve it. Such suggestions supported the development of a second prototype, whose interfaces were considered innovative and feasible for implementation by the experts interviewed. This studys results have shown that the adoption of Design Thinking presented outstanding contributions to the design and development of VLE interfaces, given that the approachs process, mindsets, methods and tools led to the creation of interfaces that meet the needs and expectations of people involved in the educational process at the CLC program in regards to the interfaces usage proposal, graphic design, content organization, educational, interaction/communication and management tools.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Waldir Antonio Alves.pdf: 2208459 bytes, checksum: f0275aaa8eb968f7b312bbc4fff95e46 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-10-06 / This work aims to explore the conceptual boundaries and the different meanings of collective action, in its history, current prospects of whom is, involving a process of establishment of the senses of propositions on the ideas of sharing / collaborating with human cognition. The field of collective intelligence in the network is relevant to this work because it is a genuine expression of an affluent intelligence. The various forms of virtual communities, the P2P strategy, mobile communities, the virtual libraries, the explosion of blogs and wikis and the Orkut fever are proof that cyberspace is a crucial factor in enhancing the social and cultural capital available and it deserves a detailed study. The hability to converge to share thoughts to an affluent action of a collective intelligence may be questionable as intelligence, whether we do not take into account the ethical issue of its intent. The collective intelligence may be a new form of planning of the power, tool that can be used for actions that not always smarts or ethical. These issues were discussed assuming the ideas developed by Castells, Lévy and Rheingold, among other authors. Being the computer a media that allows the creation and simulation, in addition to opening new connections, it structure with a new way of thought and a new genre of knowing, as they were worked in this research / Este trabalho visa explorar os limites conceituais e os diversos significados da ação coletiva, em sua história, e as perspectivas atuais das quais se reveste, envolvendo um processo de estabelecimento dos sentidos das proposições nas ideias de compartilhar/colaborar com as cognições humanas.

This study research, an ethnographic case study, aims at investigating the relation of the teaching of a teacher educator of the subject course Metodologia de Ensino de Língua Estrangeira - Inglês to the teaching of a student-teacher in the classes of methodology and practicum of a Curso de Letras of a federal university of the interior of the state of Minas Gerais, based on the principles of a sociocultural perspective of second language teacher education, supported by Vygotsky (1978, 1988, 1987, 1986, 1981, 1992, 1990), and by Johnson and Golombek (2016, 2013, 2011, 2011a, 2011b, 2002, 2003), Johnson (2015, 2009) and Golombek (2011, 2015). Therefore, theoretical-practical activities developed during the second semester of 2014 and the first semester of 2015 were observed and monitored. The data were collected from diaries, drawings, audio recordings, interviews, questionnaires, and also from documents (lesson plans) produced by the participant of this research. The analysis of the data, oriented by the concepts of a sociocultural perspective, contributed to the identification and selection in different moments of theoretical-practical observations, the construction, coconstruction, and reconstruction of academic and everyday concepts in the action of the student-teacher in preservice education in relation to the teaching of the teacher educator. These concepts, named academic and everyday concepts (JOHNSON; GOLOMBEK, 2016), are necessary to the student-teacher’s dialogical development, as they are part of a unique process of construction of knowledge (VYGOTSKY, 1978).
