INVESTMENT FOR TRADE? IMPACT OF INVESTMENT FROM GULF COOPERATION COUNCIL COUNTRIES ON TRADE

Almodarra, Sattam Faleh 01 January 2017 (has links)
The world has made great progress over the centuries through the massive increase in the interconnectedness of nations around the globe. Today, the world is connected through various ways, including the movement of goods, people, and money. The amount of goods traded across countries borders has drastically increased as the result of technological progress and the removal of barriers to trade. Not only has the world become more interconnected with the physical flows of goods and services, but also countries of the world have become more integrated financially. This study proposes to analyze how increase in financial flows, as measured by Foreign Direct Investment, impact physical flows of goods, as measured by trade. The study focuses on Gulf countries. These countries represent an interesting case study given the structure of their economies, their massive natural resource endowments and heavy reliance on oil and natural gas revenue, and their large sovereign funds. Using panel data for the years 2001-2012 and reliable econometric techniques, the study assesses the impacts of increased investment from Gulf countries on the imports from and exports to partner countries. The results show that both FDI inflows and outflows significantly increase imports to and exports from the Gulf countries. The results are robust to various estimations methods and remain valid for both agricultural and non-agricultural products. The findings of the study provide a better understanding of the trade-investment nexus and shed light on the underlying motives of investment by Gulf countries. Inflows and outflows of investment serve as a strategic option for Gulf countries to both promote their exports while securing their supply in consumer and capital goods.

Nálezy římského původu ve středních Čechách / Findings of roman origin in Central Bohemia

Kovandová, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
This work is focused on roman imports in Central Bohemia from 1st to 4th century A.D. My aim is to pay attention on findings of roman - provincial origin, which are published in a literature, the second aim is to sort these objects on a specific types and determine their inclusion on a timeline of archaeological absolute or relative chronology. This knowledge is very important to say what their importance was and which role they played in our history in Central Bohemia. It is clear that Central Bohemia had different position in some phases of a roman period. The study of imports also produce a knowledge about the importance of imported subjects from roman provinces for our society in roman period and about influences, that had many impacts on this society and her nature. Regulation of International Trade: The Struggle of Multilateralism in the Era of Regionalism

Coňk, Daniel January 2013 (has links)
Daniel Conk 5 January 2012 Thesis Abstract This thesis is an empirical research on the impact that preferential trade agreements have on the welfare of individuals and nation-states. As the number of preferential trade agreements has been growing steadily, the on-going clash between regionalism and multilateralism will be a key topic throughout the research. Fair trade movements have been becoming more popular over the fast few years as some organizations have strived to raise consumers awareness regarding the great disparities among the profit margins of the producers or farmers in developing countries in comparison to those of the merchants and distributors in developed countries. Even though quantitative data will be used in order to portray the growing economic inequalities present in today s world, arguments will also be supported on grounds of ethics and morals relating to social justice.

Borta låg men hemma lägst : Importprisernas roll för inflationen i Sverige / The Importance of Imports : The Role of Import Prices for Inflation in Sweden

Cullberg, Adrian, Olsson, Martin January 2019 (has links)

South Africa's industrialisation strategy and import substitution

Maleka, Francis Malesela January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 50% requirement of the requirements of the degree of Master in Management (in the field of Public and Development Management) June, 2017 / The role of the state and how it drives industrialisation has received renewed attention in the wake of the global economic meltdown. The purpose of this study was to determine if industrial policy implementation in South Africa is geared towards import substitution, with specific focus on the plastics sector. The study was undertaken as a qualitative research with one on one semi structured interviews with policy makers and analysts from Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), independent research body The Centre for Competition Regulation and Economic Development (CCRED), independent consultant and representative of industry from Plastics SA and documentary analysis of strategic documents from CCRED, DTI and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Industrialisation in the plastics sector has in the main been export oriented the study found. Furthermore, the study found that there is a need to target plastics sub sectors with high value to spur the growth of the plastics sector and create much needed jobs. Financial incentives are available to the sector but accessed mainly by fewer big firms. / MT2017

On Carver: Will you please read the silences, please?

Thomas, Victoria Elizabeth Buchanan 02 November 2006 (has links)
MASTERS School of English Student No: 9910994F / Literary criticism on the short fiction of Raymond Carver investigates frequently the narrative omissions whereby Carver renders the plight of middle and lower class America. Neither exclusively formal nor exclusively thematic critiques of Carver’s short stories explicate adequately the purposes and effects of these narrative omissions. This study, which is framed by Wolfgang Iser’s reader-response theories of ‘negation and ‘negativity’, and Michael Fried’s notion of aesthetic ‘absorption’, provides a formal and thematic reading of eight of Carver’s stories. This study argues that the reader’s investments in these omissions generate various indices of sympathetic identification. In tandem with such an inquiry, this study also examines the apparent antagonism between the realist and postmodernist strains discernible across Carver’s narratives. This antagonism is caused by Carver’s omissions, which simultaneously create the illusion of mimetic transparency and negate this transparency. The omissions that operate across Carver’s stories make the reader conscious not only of how he or she interprets the author’s words, but also how he or she interprets the world. Carver’s neo-realism, this study proposes, therefore has a far greater potential for social realism than traditional modes of realist representation.

Charakterizace mechanismů jaderného transportu proteinu 53BP1 / Characterisation of the mechanisms regulating 53BP1 nuclear transport

Liďák, Tomáš January 2016 (has links)
Tumor suppressor p53-binding protein 1 (53BP1) is an integral part of a sophisticated network of cellular pathways termed as the DNA damage response (DDR). These pathways are specialized in the maintenance of genome integrity. Recently, it was reported that nuclear import of 53BP1 depends on importin ß. Here, I used fluorescence microscopy and co-immunoprecipitation experiments to identify its nuclear localization signal (NLS). Clusters of basic amino acids 1667-KRK-1669 and 1681-KRGRK- 1685 were required for 53BP1 interaction with importin ß and for its nuclear localization. Short peptide containing these two clusters was sufficient for interaction with importin ß and targeting EGFP to the nucleus. Additionally, the effect of 53BP1 phosphorylation at S1678 on its nuclear import was examined. Mimicking the phosphorylation in the 53BP1-S1678D mutant decreased the binding to importin ß and resulted in a mild defect in 53BP1 nuclear import. However, 53BP1 entered the nucleus continuously during the cell cycle, suggesting that CDK-dependent phosphorylation of S1678 probably does not significantly contribute to the regulation of 53BP1 nuclear transport. Taken together, 53BP1 NLS meets the attributes of a classical bipartite NLS. Although no cell cycle-dependent regulation of its import was observed, the...

Mutation-function analysis in vivo of the nuclear localization signals of L2 minor capsid proteins of high risk HPV16 and low risk HPV11

Bockstall, Katy Elizabeth January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Junona Moroianu / During the papillomavirus replication cycle, the L2 minor capsid protein enters the nucleus in the initial phase after uncoating of the incoming virions and in the productive phase when L2 together with L1 major capsid protein mediate the encapsidation of the newly replicated viral genome. L2 proteins of both high risk HPV16 L2 and low risk HPV11 L2 have two nuclear localization signals (NLSs): one at the N-terminus (nNLS) and one at the C terminus (cNLS). The purpose of these experiments is to determine the minimal mutations necessary to inhibit the function of the NLSs. In this study, subcellular localization of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) fusions with full length L2 and L2 mutants lacking either the cNLS (EGFP-L2ΔC), nNLS (EGFP-L2ΔN), or both NLSs (EGFP-L2ΔNΔC) was analyzed in HeLa cell transfection assays. Full length HPV16 L2 and HPV11 L2 proteins localize to the nucleus. For both HPV16 and 11 L2, each NLS could independently mediate nuclear import in vivo. EGFP fusions were also made with mutated nNLS (EGFP-L2ΔCSbN) or mutated cNLS (EGFP-L2ΔNSbC). Transfected HeLa cells were examined by fluorescence microscopy and quantitative studies were done. In both HPV16 and 11 L2 proteins, mutation of basic residues in either NLS inhibited its nuclear import ability. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College.
