FTM Trans Theory VS. Trans Narratives : Working Towards an Updated Trans Theory

Nelson, Emily January 2011 (has links)
Theories are tools with which we critically analyze society‟s structure and understand experiences that are not our own. When theories no longer describe the narratives that they claim, we must update them. This thesis proposes to do just that. The trans theories of J. Halberstam and Jay Prosser will be analyzed using ten autobiographies written by self-identified FTM transsexuals and transmen. Prosser and Halberstam are two well-known theorists in the field of trans theory. J. Halberstam approaches FTM transsexuality from the perspective of a lesbian feminist, who has an understanding of transgender butch individuals. Jay Prosser writes from the perspective of being a FTM transsexual himself. I chose publications by these theorists because they had sections that focused specifically on FTM narratives, and they both used at least two of the autobiographies I use and they were published the same year. Therefore, I found them to be two theoretical frameworks that could be compared on several different levels. The publication dates of the ten narratives range from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Applicability of the theories will be measured by comparing them to what the autobiographers say about their lives. The tool of analysis will be five focus areas that are represented, to some degree, in each narrative. They are: Trying to fit into female roll/body/world; Discovering one is Trans/Coming Out; Acquiring Hormones and Sexual Reassignment Surgery; Trying to Establish/Re-establish a Confident Identity; and Romantic/Sexual Relationships.. I will discuss how helpful each theory is in accordance with these narratives. The aim of this thesis is to assess how well each theorist addresses the issue of transsexual identity. The field of transsexual research is still new and developing, there are many interesting parts of these narratives that can be delved into further. I will conclude by proposing a new trans theoretical view point that would better help one to understand the process of female-to-male transition. What one should take away from this thesis is that despite differences in sex and gender formation, these people are, like the rest of the world, trying to create an identity that they not only feel comfortable with as a representation of themselves, but also one that they can be proud of.

Gêmeos monozigóticos discordantes para transexualidade : diferenças neuroanatômicas e psicológicas

Andreazza, Tahiana Signorini January 2012 (has links)
The present work is an exploratory study case that discusses about neuroanatomical, hormonal and neuropsychological factors and their possible associations in one monozygotic male twin pair discordant for transsexualism. Both twins answered semi-structural interviews applied by specialized team from Gender Identity Disorder Program of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Brazil; In addition, they were tested with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) battery that evaluate verbal and non verbal cognitive functions that contribute to general intelligence; and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the volumes of specific cerebral structures. The mother of the twins gave information (father did not want to participate) about the pregnancy, delivery, conditions of birth, childhood, raising environment, unusual medical or life history events. Both neuroimaging and cognitive function testing detected different outcome between the twins. In six different cerebral regions differences have been found in the volume of specific structures, as well as in language, visuo-spatial abilities. It is suggested that epigenetic factors could be related to the phenotypic discordance and the findings of this study

[pt] A CLÍNICA DOS SOFRIMENTOS NARCÍSICO-IDENTITÁRIOS: ALGUMAS IMPLICAÇÕES SOBRE O TRABALHO DO ANALISTA / [en] THE CLINIC OF NARCISSISTIC-IDENTITY DISORDER: SOME IMPLICATIONS OF THE ANALYST S ROLE

NATÁLIA DE OLIVEIRA DE PAULA CIDADE 08 September 2016 (has links)
[en] The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the changes that take place within the analytic setting – and a possible complexification of the analyst s psychic work – when the analysis refers to a narcissistic-identity disorder. These clinical cases confront the analyst with the need to broaden his listening skills to recognize non-verbal communication (body and affect) as messages coming from an ancient time before language acquisition. Considering this form of communication as a specificity of this type of clinical encounter, it is important to highlight the great significance of the object and the quality of his responses in the subject s past history as well as within the analytical relationship to facilitate the development of the symbolization processes and/or to let them resume their course. The analyst plays a more active role within the analytic relationship, being aware of the potential messages originating from other sources – body and affects. The expansion of the analytic method opens the possibility of defining intersubjectivity as a key moment for the construction of the subjectivity. In other words, the process of subjectivation depends on the quality of the relationship established with a fundamental other and it is of utmost importance to recognize its clinical value.

Baril, Alexandre 20 November 2013 (has links)

López Vargas, Valeria Paula 10 April 2021 (has links)
Dissociative identity disorder is one of the most studied and least understood mental disorders by society. Despite its uncertainty, the disorder has been used as a narrative device in films since the silent film era. Symptoms of the disorder represent an opportunity for screenwriters and filmmakers, as depicted in David Fincher's 1996 film Fight Club. However, the representation of a mental disorder in films can be mistaken if the characters are not solid. For this reason, in this paper we analyze how dissociative identity disorder is represented in the construction of the leading character in the film Fight Club, specifically the psychological dimension of the character. Likewise, it seeks to analyze the representation of the dissociative identity disorder through the symptoms of the character, especially, how these symptoms are accurate regarding the mental illness. Therefore, the main contribution of this research consists of providing a greater understanding of the representation of dissociative identity disorder in the character The Narrator from Fight Club.

A hundred different I want to explain a thousand pieces of a life” : A qualitative study describing experiences of daily life of people living with severe dissociation

Henriksson, Linda, Sandberg, Mikaela January 2022 (has links)
