La femme et la satire : étude sur le corps féminin et les femmes dans la caricature de mœurs à Madrid (1864-1894) / Women and satire : study about feminine body and women in moral caricature in Madrid (1864-1894)

La caricature de mœurs fait définitivement son apparition à Madrid dans Gil Blas. Elle s'empare d'abord de la question féminine en se penchant sur la différence des corps. Les caricaturistes dénoncent les apparences fallacieuses du corps de la bourgeoise dans un déshabillage qui met en perspective un discours masculin sur les dépenses associées aux toilettes et livre un discours en creux sur la condition masculine à travers la critique du mariage. Le corps des femmes des classes populaires est marqué par le travail, la précarité, la vulnérabilité, la solitude. Autant de circonstances qui font planer le danger de l'entrée dans la prostitution, signifiée aussi par la ritualisation du corps empruntée à la silhouette de la cocotte. La caricature de mœurs s'oriente vers le terrain de l'érotico-festif en multipliant les figures de cocottes boulevardières. Celles-ci manifestent le nouveau statut de l'image commerciale de la femme. L'épaisseur sociale du corps féminin disparaît. Aux scènes de séduction où le caricaturiste déjoue le jeu hypocrite du marché de la chair, succède une représentation de la séduction de l'image. La prééminence de la cocotte manifeste l'avènement des nouveaux usages de la consommation. Dans la pluralité des images de la femme qui circulent dans la deuxième moitié du siècle, les caricatures diffusées massivement occupent une place décisive. / Moral caricature definitely appears in Madrid in Gil Blas. It first focuses on the question of woman, scrutinising bodily differences. Caricaturists denounce the deceptive appearances of the bourgeois female body and uncover the male discourse about the spending on garments. Thus they indirectly offer a discourse on the male condition, through criticising marriage. The body of lower-class women is affected by work, precariousness, vulnerability and loneliness –circumstances meaning that the danger of prostitution is ever present. Prostitution is also indicated by the ritualisation visible in the body of the cocotte. Moral caricature becomes both erotic and humorous while showing more and more streetwalkers, who embody the status of the commercial image of woman. The social dimension of the female body disappears. Seduction scenes in which the caricaturist unveils the hypocrite game of the commerce of flesh are replaced by images which seduce. The predominance of the cocotte ushers in new habits of consumption. Among the many diverse images of woman that circulate in the second half of the 19th century, massively diffused caricatures play a decisive role.

Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar a revista Semana Illustrada, dirigida pelo prussiano Henrique Fleiuss, com especial atenção para as representações do negro e do tema da escravidão. O periódico circulou no Rio de Janeiro entre 1860 e 1876 e é pioneiro no que se refere ao uso de imagens na imprensa. As novas tecnologias, associadas à demanda por imagens, incitaram o surgimento e posterior consolidação da imprensa ilustrada. A invenção e a popularização da fotografia evidenciavam uma sociedade ávida por imagens e que estava em pleno processo de transformação e elaboração de uma educação visual. Nesta pesquisa, a reflexão sobre as imagens presentes no periódico Semana Illustrada que se referem ao negro e ao escravo tem como objetivo entender a visão que este veículo de comunicação tinha sobre o assunto, como parte das questões cotidianas da sociedade oitocentista do Rio de Janeiro na segunda metade do século XIX. O contexto brasileiro se revela peculiar, uma vez que se tratava de uma sociedade que se pretendia moderna, mas que convivia ainda com grande contingente de mão de obra escrava. Ao estudar essas imagens, descortina-se a cultura visual de um tempo emblemático para o Brasil. / This research aims to analyse the magazine Semana Illustrada, managed by the prussian Henrique Fleiuss, focusing on the representation of black people and slavery. The magazine circulated in Rio de Janeiro between 1860 and 1876 and plays a pioneer role concerning the use of images in the press. The new technologies associated to the demand for images incited the appearing and consolidation of illustrated press. The invention and popularization of photography evinced a society avid for images and in process of transformation and elaboration of a visual education. This research intends to reflect upon the images found in Semana Illustrada that refers to the black people and the slave in order to understand the vision of this vehicle of communication about the subject as part of social life in Rio de Janeiro by the second half of nineteenth century. The brazilian context is peculiar once there was a society pretending to be modern, that nevertheless cohabited with a big contingent of slave work force. Study this images is to discover the visual culture of an emblematic time for Brazil.

Un rendez-vous manqué : journaux illustrés et films comiques dans la France d’avant 1915 / A Missed Opportunity : illustrated Press and Comic Films in Pre-1915 France

Les liens qu’entretient le cinéma avec les journaux illustrés ont été perçus très tôt par les observateurs. Or, si les historiens semblent s’accorder sur une « influence » de la presse illustrée sur la production comique du cinéma français, les journaux humoristiques s’intéressent peu au cinéma de manière générale et ignorent complètement, ou presque, les films comiques. Comment expliquer ce phénomène ? Cette thèse propose de développer trois pistes de réflexion. En premier lieu nous tentons d’appréhender la manière dont la presse illustrée a perçu l’émergence et l’essor du spectacle cinématographique au tournant du XIXe siècle jusqu’au milieu des années 1910. Pour la plupart des chroniqueurs le spectacle cinématographique apparaît comme un intrus parmi les spectacles scéniques parisiens, déportant en quelque sorte la rivalité entre théâtre et cinéma dans la presse illustrée. Puis, en nous intéressant aux proximités entre films et journaux, il apparaît que le cinéma emprunte aux journaux autant qu’il recycle leurs histoires comiques, les modernise. Cela nous conduit enfin à envisager les deux médias sous l’angle de leurs divergences, à la fois idéologiques et politiques, empêchant une rencontre qui semblait pourtant à première vue inévitable. / The links between the cinema and the illustrated press were perceived very early by the observers. Now, if historians seem to agree on an "influence" of the illustrated press on the comic production of French cinema, humorous newspapers are not very interested in cinema in general and completely, or almost completely, ignore comic films. How to explain this phenomenon ? This thesis proposes to develop three lines of thought. First, we try to understand the way in which the illustrated press saw the emergence and growth of the film show at the turn of the 19th century until the mid-1910s. For most chroniclers the cinema appears as an intruder among the Parisian stage shows, deporting in a way the rivalry between theater and cinema in the illustrated press. Then, by looking at the proximity between films and newspapers, it appears that cinema borrows from newspapers as much as it recycles their comic stories, modernizes them. This leads us finally to consider the two media from the angle of their differences, both ideological and political, preventing a meeting that seemed at first sight inevitable.

Le sujet de la présente thèse est le portrait photographique post-mortem à Buenos Aires et, spécialement, son développement dans le cadre de l'insertion de la photographie dans la presse de masse du début du XXe siècle. En ce sens, l'objectif principal de ce travail est de contribuer à la connaissance des rapports entre mort et représentation visuelle dans le début de la culture de masse. L'analyse d'un corpus hétérogène - des photographies, des peintures, des photogravures, des caricatures, des images aussi journalistiques que publicitaires - essayera donc de rendre compte de quelques problèmes fondamentaux de la présence de l'image et le portrait dans les rites funéraires et les pratiques de deuil modernes. On a aussi le propos de mettre en relief le rôle des pratiques mortuaires dans le processus argentin de modernisation et ses liens avec le développement de la culture visuelle de masse. / The subject of this thesis is the postmortem photographic portrait in Buenos Aires and, especially, its development in the context of the insertion of the photography in the early twentieth century massmedia. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of the relationship between death and visual representation in the beginning of the mass culture. The analysis of a heterogeneous corpus - the photographs, paintings, photo-engravings, cartoons, journalistic images and advertisings - therefore tries to study some fundamental problems of the presence of the image and the portrait in modern funerary rites and mourning practices. Its intention is also to highlight the role of mortuary practices in the Argentine modernization process and its links with the development of visual mass culture. / El sujeto de la tesis presente es el retrato fotográfico post-mortem a Buenos Aires y, especialmente, su desarrollo en el marco de la inserción de la fotografía en la prensa de masa de principios del siglo XX. En este sentido, el objetivo principal de este trabajo es contribuir al conocimiento de los relaciones entre muerto y representación visual en el principio de la cultura de masa. El análisis de un corpus heterogéneo - fotografías, pinturas, fotograbados, caricaturas, imágenes tan periodísticas como publicitarias - tratará pues de dar cuenta de algunos problemas fundamentales de la presencia de la imagen y el retrato en los ritos funerarios y las prácticas modernas de duelo. Tenemos también la intención de poner de relieve el papel de las prácticas mortuorias en el proceso argentino de modernización y sus lazos con desarrollo de la cultura visual de masa.

Les gravures du journal illustré montréalais L’Opinion publique(1870-1883) : une représentation populaire de l’ailleurs

Ce mémoire de maitrise porte sur la représentation de l’ailleurs véhiculée aux lecteurs d’images, au Québec, par les gravures du journal illustré L’Opinion publique. Effectivement, si l’Histoire commence avec les premières traces écrites, elle pose le problème de l’étude historique de ceux qui n’ont pas laissé de tels témoignages, les personnes qui ne sont pas ou peu alphabétisées. Nous proposons d’étudier ces personnes par le biais de l’image, médium auquel elles ont pu avoir accès. Nous avons ainsi cherché à savoir quelle connaissance de l’ailleurs a pu être véhiculée aux lecteurs d’images à travers les gravures du journal. Nous considérons que les gravures sont comprises par tous. Celles-ci représentent la moitié des pages du périodique, nous pensons que ce journal a pu être accessible à chacun, à ceux que nous appelons les lecteurs d’images. Nos conclusions montrent que ces illustrations ont pu étendre la connaissance de l’espace des Québécois, à travers la représentation de l’actualité. Il est à noter que ces gravures proviennent en partie de journaux français et montrent la France et ses colonies. La population montréalaise se trouve donc au contact d’une certaine influence française, dont les élites se font les vecteurs. Une comparaison avec le Canadian Illustrated News révèle de profondes différences. Ainsi, ce journal du même propriétaire indique un intérêt marqué pour l’Empire britannique. Ce journal qui vise un public plus cultivé que celui de son homologue francophone donne à voir un espace plus large à ses lecteurs. Ainsi, chaque ligne éditoriale se fait l’écho de représentations différentes, transmises à ses lecteurs, populaires ou moins, francophones ou anglophones. / This master’s thesis focuses on the representation of the idea of “elsewhere” as conveyed by the illustrated newspaper L’Opinion publique’s engravings to the pictures’readers in Quebec. Indeed, if history did commence with the written word alone, challenges would arise with regards to the historical study of those who did not leave behind such accounts, namely the illiterate or barely literate. We propose to study this audience by means of the printed picture. Thus, we explored how “elsewhere” was portrayed to the newspaper’s readers through the medium of the picture. We believe that the pictures were understood by everyone. Considering half of the newspaper consisted of illustrations, we assume L’Opinion publique would have been accessible to everyone. Our conclusions show that these illustrations could have expanded knowledge of space of the Quebecers, through the representation of the news. We notice a part of these engravings come from French newspapers and depict France and her colonies. Through the elite, Montreal population is in contact with a degree of French influence. A comparison with the Canadian Illustrated News reveals significant differences. This newspaper, owned by the same person, indicates a marked interest in the British Empire. The Canadian Illustrated News aims at a public more cultured than the French-speaking counterpart, indicated by the broader array of topics covered. Thus both papers explored different points-of-views, which were transmitted to its readers, working class or not, French or English speaking.

René Burri est un photoreporter, membre de l’Agence Magnum Photos depuis 1955. Certaines de ses photographies sont aujourd’hui considérées comme des icônes de l’histoire de la photographie. L’analyse du système de diffusion de son travail, à travers la presse illustrée, tentera de répondre à la question de la fabrique de ces images en tant que symboles. Cette dense production est traitée en quatre chapitres. Le premier introduit le contexte photographique et éditorial dans lequel arrive René Burri, en 1955. Le deuxième suit l’ordre des publications liées à une prise de vue photojournalistique, événement après événement. Le troisième accompagne, thématiquement, les sujets développés par le photoreporter, quand le troisième replace la photographie au moment de sa reconnaissance institutionnelle. Le travail de René Burri subit dès lors, par la presse illustrée, une sélection par l’icône.Quelle est la relation entre l’œuvre de René Burri et la presse illustrée ? L’analyse des politiques éditoriales des plus grands titres de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle soutient le discours et atteste de la place de la photographie de René Burri dans la presse illustrée. Cette recherche, au corpus inédit, permet de montrer l’œuvre du photographe sous une approche singulière et, au- delà, permet de voir en quoi la presse illustrée participe à un mode de diffusion exclusif de certaines photographies. En effet, certains clichés, qui avait été sujets à de nombreuses publications sont aujourd’hui oubliés, alors que d’autres, qui n’avaient pas été publiées au moment de leur réalisation, sont aujourd’hui, avec quelques unes qui résonnent toujours, représentatives du parcours du photoreporter. / René Burri, member of Magnum Photos agency since the middle of the fifties, is a famous photographer. Thanks to an exhaustive inventory of all of his published production, the study will bring it out. Through the analysis of the way the work of this swiss photographer has been edited, we could understand how, today, some pictures are kind of iconic. Four chapters analyse this dense production. The first one introduces the photographic and editorial context in which René Burri begins working in 1955. The second, following the order of the publications, event after event, deals with a photojournalistic photography. The third one handles the investigation photography of René Burri, trough a thematic construction. The last section is about the institutional recognition of the photography as an Art, so as some of the photographs are published like pieces of a photographic heritage. René Burri’s work is then broadcasted undergoing an iconic selection. What is the relationship between the work of René Burri and periodicals? The analysis of some greatest titles of the second half of twentieth century’s editorials politics attests of the importance of photography; and furthermore, of René Burri’s pictures. Through an unpublished corpus, the purpose of this study is to show the work of the photograph through an original approach; and, beyond, to see how the press can give a selective vision of this work. Indeed, some of photographs often published by the past are now unknown, although others, which did not appear in periodicals at the moment they were taken, are now very famous. Today, those ones, among vintages ones that still echoe, are representatives of René Burri’s work.

A Vida Paulista semanário ilustrado de humorismo, crítica e arte foi publicada na cidade de São Paulo entre 1903 e 1905. Naquela época, a indústria gráfica estava em expansão e o jornalismo se convertia em empreendimento lucrativo, acompanhando o desenvolvimento urbano e comercial das principais cidades do país. Na capital paulista, desde a última década do século XIX, a imprensa periódica proliferava e assumia funções diversas. A Vida Paulista delimitou o seu escopo pelo trinômio humorismo, crítica e arte, mas abordou assuntos vários e defendeu um programa fundado no bom-senso dos comentários e na independência da opinião. Os diretores do semanário pretendiam fazer dele um caleidoscópio do viver multiforme e cosmopolita da capital artística do Brasil. No alvorecer do século XX, o estado de São Paulo e sua capital passavam por grandes transformações e foram palcos de tramas diversas, das quais a Vida Paulista foi testemunha e agente. No presente trabalho, pretendemos apresentar o semanário ilustrado fundado por Arlindo Leal e Peregrino de Castro, disponibilizá-lo em versão digital para futuras pesquisas e oferecer caminhos sem qualquer ambição de esgotar as infinitas possibilidades de leitura da Vida Paulista como fonte de conhecimento sobre o passado. Nosso objetivo é nutrir a revista de alguns pressupostos necessários à sua utilização como documento histórico, restituindo-lhe parte da inteligibilidade que o tempo e o esquecimento removeram. / Vida Paulista illustrated weekly magazine of humor, criticism and art was published in São Paulo (city) between 1903 and 1905. By that time, graphic industry was expanding and journalism was converting into a profitable enterprise, following the urban and commercial development of the main cities of Brazil. At São Paulos capital, since the last decade of nineteenth century, the periodical press proliferated and assumed various functions. Vida Paulista delimited its own scope by the trinomial humor, criticism and art, even though it addressed several issues and defended a program based on a good judgment of their reviews and independence of opinion. The heads of the magazine intended to make it a kaleidoscope of the multiform and cosmopolitan way of living of Brazils artistic capital. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the state of São Paulo and its capital went through major transformations and worked as stage for several plots, of which Vida Paulista was witness and agent. In this work, we seek to present the illustrated weekly magazine founded by Arlindo Leal and Peregrino de Castro, make it available in digital form for future researches and offer ways with no ambition to deplete the unlimited possibilities to read Vida Paulista as a source of knowledge about the past. Our goal is to foster the magazine with some assumptions that are needed for its utilization as historical document, restoring part of the intelligibility that time and oblivion has removed from it.

Cette thèse retrace les parcours croisés de deux éditeurs de presse : Lucien Vogel (1886-1954) et de Michel de Brunhoff (1892-1958). Après La Gazette du bon ton en 1912, les deux beaux-frères lancent Vogue français et le Jardin des modes en 1920. Ces revues, qui accordent une place majeure à l'illustration, contribuent à moderniser radicalement la presse féminine. Le parcours éditorial de Vogel et de Brunhoff, centré autour de la presse féminine. La presse d'art (Feuillets d'Art, Arts et métiers graphiques) et la mode, est semblable jusqu'à la fin des années 1920 avant de diverger en 1928 lorsque Vogel fonde le magazine photographique Vu. À partir de cette période, alors que Brunhoff reste attaché à la réalisation de magazines de mode, Vogel s'engage sur la voie de la politique, défendant avec Le Petit Journal, Marianne et Messidor, des idées de gauche et un antifascisme prononcé. Afin d'appréhender l'itinéraire général de Lucien Vogel et de Michel de Brunhoff tout en en saisissant les singularités - leur rôle dans le renouvellement de la presse féminine, leur intérêt pour les questions techniques liées à l'illustration ainsi que les choix opérés par Vogel en 1930 -, c'est une étude chronologique et comparée que cette thèse a entreprise. En grande partie biographique, afin de mettre en lumière la personnalité et le parcours de Vogel et de Brunhoff de leurs débuts professionnels à leur fin de carrière, cette réflexion se veut aussi une contribution plus générale à l’histoire culturelle, à l'histoire de la presse illustrée, et celle de la presse féminine du début du XXe siècle dans laquelle ces éditeurs ont laissé l'image d'innovateurs de presse et d'éditeurs esthètes. / This thesis recounts the crossed career paths of two publishers : Lucien Vogel (1886-1954) and Michel de Brunhoff (1892-1958). After La Gazette du bon ton launched in 1912, the two brothers-in-law published French Vogue and Le Jardin des modes in 1920. These three journals, which give a major role to the illustration, contribute to radically modernize women's magazines. The editorial career of Vogel and de Brunhoff, centered around women's magazines, art press (Feuillets d'Art, Arts et métiers graphiques) and fashion is similar to the late 1920s before diverging in 1928 when Vogel founded the photography magazine Vu. From this period, while Brunhoff remains committed to achieving fashion magazines, Vogel is committed towards politics, defending with Le Petit Journal, Marianne and Messidor, leftist ideas and a pronounced anti-fascism. To understand the general career of Lucien Vogel and Michel de Brunhoff while understanding its singularities - their role in the renewal of women's magazines, their interest in technical issues related to the illustration and the choices made by Vogel in 1930 - this thesis study is based on a chronological and compared work. Largely biographical, to highlight the personality and career of Vogel and de Brunhoff from their profession al beginnings to the end of their career, this reflection has also to be taken as a more general contribution to cultural history, to illustrated press history, and to the history of women's magazines of beginning of the twentieth century in which both publishers have left an image of groundbreaking and aesthetes publishers.

Os diretores do semanário pretendiam fazer dele um caleidoscópio do viver multiforme e cosmopolita da capital artística do Brasil. No alvorecer do século XX, o estado de São Paulo e sua capital passavam por grandes transformações e foram palcos de tramas diversas, das quais a Vida Paulista foi testemunha e agente. No presente trabalho, pretendemos apresentar o semanário ilustrado fundado por Arlindo Leal e Peregrino de Castro, disponibilizá-lo em versão digital para futuras pesquisas e oferecer caminhos sem qualquer ambição de esgotar as infinitas possibilidades de leitura da Vida Paulista como fonte de conhecimento sobre o passado. Nosso objetivo é nutrir a revista de alguns pressupostos necessários à sua utilização como documento histórico, restituindo-lhe parte da inteligibilidade que o tempo e o esquecimento removeram. / Vida Paulista illustrated weekly magazine of humor, criticism and art was published in São Paulo (city) between 1903 and 1905. By that time, graphic industry was expanding and journalism was converting into a profitable enterprise, following the urban and commercial development of the main cities of Brazil. At São Paulos capital, since the last decade of nineteenth century, the periodical press proliferated and assumed various functions. Vida Paulista delimited its own scope by the trinomial humor, criticism and art, even though it addressed several issues and defended a program based on a good judgment of their reviews and independence of opinion. The heads of the magazine intended to make it a kaleidoscope of the multiform and cosmopolitan way of living of Brazils artistic capital. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the state of São Paulo and its capital went through major transformations and worked as stage for several plots, of which Vida Paulista was witness and agent. In this work, we seek to present the illustrated weekly magazine founded by Arlindo Leal and Peregrino de Castro, make it available in digital form for future researches and offer ways with no ambition to deplete the unlimited possibilities to read Vida Paulista as a source of knowledge about the past. Our goal is to foster the magazine with some assumptions that are needed for its utilization as historical document, restoring part of the intelligibility that time and oblivion has removed from it.
