Řeč hudby: Claudio Monteverdi jako průkopník moderní práce s textem / Language of Music: Claudio Monteverdi as an Innovator in the Field of Dealing With Text in Music

Kroupová, Sylvie January 2013 (has links)
TITLE: THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC: Claudio Monteverdi as an innovator in the field of dealing with text in music. SUMMARY: The main topic of this Thesis is Claudio Monteverdi's work and its importance for the development of dealing with text in music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. In Monteverdi's compositions we can follow the evolution of counterpoint techniques reaching from the traditional 16th century vocal polyphony to the purely monodic approach to composition that is typical of Baroque music. The text works as a creative element that affects the author's way of working, leading him from the first experiments with the musical representation of each word in the madrigal to a dramatic expression of the text in the style of opera. In his work Monteverdi uses wordpainting to an unprecedented extent. He invents new musical expression for words that contain a strong emotional charge, like subtle rhythmic figures for joyful words, or sharp dissonances for words conveying pain. He is the first composer to achieve excellence in combining flawless technical skill with the dramatic line of the composition. His work forms an imaginary bridge between music of two periods: in the first period text is perceived as a mere "servant" of music but becomes the "ruler" of it in the later one. The Thesis...

Adolescent Transformation In the Short Stories of Carson McCullers

Woods, Ashley-Ann Dorn 14 May 2010 (has links)
Carson McCullers's neglected short stories "Sucker", "Like That", and "The Haunted Boy" depict stark adolescent crises. Her character analyses dramatize important elements of many theories of adolescent psychology. Each of these stories depicts what happens when something goes horribly wrong in the course of an already difficult stage of life. In "Sucker" two different stages of adolescent development collide. Pete and Sucker go through different psychological adjustments. The two boys discover the difficulties of adolescent romance, hero-worship, peer group formation and exclusion, and power reversal. The narrator in "Like That" struggles with her Peter-Pan complex as she witnesses her sister go through an adolescent romance. She despises - and fears - the changes that adolescence and adulthood bring to her life and her family. "The Haunted Boy" explores the struggles of Hugh as he deals with issues of adult imitation, lack of a strong male role model, peer loyalty, and emotional repression.

Translation of Shakespeare as a tool for the advancement of South African indigenous languages: Romeo and Juliet and Peteni's Kwazidenge

Dyosop, Ntombenkosi January 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation. Johannesburg, 2016 / There are eleven official languages in South Africa. However, only two of these languages – English and Afrikaans – are dominant. It is often argued that this is because the other 9 official languages do not have enough terminology to be used in institutions of higher learning and in technical fields. I argue that the adaptation of literary texts helps in improving the status of African languages. For this purpose this research involves an analysis of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet which has been adapted into an English novel Hill of Fools by Peteni (1976) and later translated into isiXhosa as Kwazidenge (Peteni 1980). The analysis consists of a comparison between extracts from Romeo and Juliet and Kwazidenge via Hill of Fools using Lambert and van Gorp’s (1985) practical model for textual analysis. I argue that as much as Romeo and Juliet can be seen as a difficult text because of Shakespeare’s English, Peteni was successful in adapting the play into isiXhosa. / MT2017

Reconhecimento de movimentos humanos para imitação e controle de um robô humanoide / Recognition of human motions for imitation and control of a humanoid robot

Cavalcante, Fernando Zuher Mohamad Said 24 August 2012 (has links)
Os resultados desses experimentos revelaram um desempenho satisfatório quanto ao sistema desenvolvido / In human-robot interactions there are still many restrictions to overcome regarding the provision of a communication as natural to the human senses. The ability to interact with humans in a natural way in social contexts (the use of speech, gestures, facial expressions, body movements) is a key point to ensure the acceptance of robots in a society of people not specialized in manipulation of robotic devices. Moreover, most existing robots have limited abilities of perception, cognition and behavior in comparison with humans. In this context, this research project investigated the potential of the robotic architecture of the NAO humanoid robot, in terms of ability to perform interactions with humans through imitation of body movements of a person and the robot control. As for sensors, we used a non-intrusive sensor depth-camera built into the device Kinect. As to techniques, some mathematical concepts were discussed for abstraction of the spatial configurations of some joints/members of the human body these configurations were captured through the use of the OpenNI library. The performed experiments were about imitation and the control of the robot through the evaluation of various users. The results of these experiments showed a satisfactory performance for the developed system

Os Concertouvertures de Georg Philipp Telemann: um estudo dos gostos reunidos segundo as preceptivas setecentistas de estilo e gosto / The Concertouvertures of Georg Philipp Telemann: a review of the Mixed Tastes according to the seventeenth-century sense of Style and Taste.

Paoliello, Noara de Oliveira 31 October 2011 (has links)
No séc. / This research is focused on recovering the seventeenth-century sense of the concepts style and taste in music. Based on original works from the eighteenth century, presents the process of association between the ideas of taste and style during the eighteenth century, becoming the basis of terms as mixed tastes and gallant style, often used on descriptions of Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) music. This study analyses the styles and tastes used by Telemann from a historical approach, using the classical rethoric in which the seventeenth-century authors based their writings; treatises about taste from the seventeenth and eighteenth century period; musical poetics from the seventeenth century and Telemann´s autobiographies (from 1718 an 1740). This work proposed the study of both concepts not only from the technical or national perspectives, but recovering its place on the rhetoric context of elocutio tied to the notion of decorum. The use of the previous terms in the works from the seventeenth century relates them to the suitability between different ways of composition for each circumstance and national taste, both ruled by decorum. Hence, these concepts are part of an unique musical notion, that can be better understood from the parallel perspectives of taste and style. In eighteenth century, taste ruled composition forms, generating peculiar styles from certain groups, countries and auctoritas. The two main normative parameters of taste in the period were French and Italian music. Thus, from the study and imitation of foreign styles, the practice known as mixed tastes was shaped - it was mentioned in the seventeenth-century German writings as gemischten Goût, vermischter Geschmack and German taste. From this imitation process, where following something as example was not understood as copying the content, but learning and practising the process of working on materials from various sources with the purpose of building something new, a new genre arises. It\'s called by Telemann and his contemporaries Concert en Ouverture, or Concertouverture.

The present paper offers a bibliographic review of one of the most important and controversial articles in the field of Computer Science, "Computers and Intelligence" (original title: Computing Machinery and Intelligence). The text was written in 1950 by one of the greatest mathematical geniuses who later revolutionized the world, Alan Mathison Turing (1912-1954). Turing’s excellent scientific work contributed significantly to the development of the digital computer and also gave rise to the first steps in the studies on Artificial Intelligence. The paper investigates the reasons that led Turing to write the article, highlights the main contributions of the article to various fields of knowledge, and provides a critical analysis of Turing’s answer to the question "Can a machine think?". My analysis reveals that Turing’s article can be divided into three parts: (i) the game of Imitation and the digital computer; (ii) philosophical objections and finally (iii) learning machines. Inquiries on these questions justified the development of the research in the uniformization and understanding of key issues in the Philosophy of the Mind. These inquiries reflect the opposing interests of AI researchers, as the answers to these questions depend on how "intelligence" or "consciousness" is defined and what exactly are the "machines" under discussion. For a better understanding of the subject, the arguments of Turing, John Searle, and other thinkers will be used.

These authors will allow us to think the contemporary processes of subjectivity, in which appears a specific dynamic between imitation and invention on individual life and that, in turn, go hand in hand with neoliberal capitalism dynamics and its incessant deterritorializations. Today, contemporary individuals quickly mobilize their imitations and inventions, their opinions replicate on a large scale and they are driven by the belief in the possibility of interfering, divert, sculpting, modeling and even reverse the direction of their own lives. Imitation and invention can be seen as tools of social construction. Furthermore, in the case of virality and contagion of ideas through social networking on the Internet or analog networks of consumption and influence, a bestial force of imitation is set up that seeks a global spread, a force whose power is extra-individual and allows us to consider subjects beyond self-contained units. To think this theme, we will establish our research in dialogue with other authors and examples from contemporary art to internet examples and, between chapters of the work, we will propose small textual shortcircuits that break the linearity of reasoning. These short-circuits can, in some cases, challenge the conventions of academic text, but they are mainly an experiment on the relationship between invention and imitation in the creation of my own voice / Neste trabalho, partimos das teorias da imitação do sociólogo francês do século XIX Gabriel Tarde, e da sua revisão, já no século XXI, pelo filósofo italiano Maurizio Lazzarato.

As specific objectives we have: To analyze the effect of cryptography in the context of the great world wars; Understand the political significance / power of cryptography in the twentieth century; Analyze the film: "The game of imitation" taking it as a historical source for understanding the logic of cryptography as a mechanism of power; Historize the development of Enigma machine technology and unveil the power elements behind the use of encryption. The problem would be in what way the encryption starts to influence the structures of power and military actions from the discovery of the cipher of the Enigma machine? We have the following hypotheses: Due to the complexity of international relations, from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, communications between allied nations began to be careful not to be discovered by the spies of rivals. From there begins the effort to develop encryption and coding mechanisms that led to the development of encryption machines until the development of the Enigma machine; The second hypothesis would be that the World Wars speeded up the practices of building cipher machines as a way of defending national secrets; The analysis of the film: "The game of imitation" will show us the role of Mathematics and the action of the University in the process of technological creation to unravel "enigmas".

Suleiman, Wael 18 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Sergot, Bertrand 06 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
