Racionalidade do entendimento: um estudo sobre a pragmática kantiana de Jürgen Habermas / Understanding´s racionality: a study about \"Kantian formal pragmatics\" of Jürgen Habermas

Antonio Ianni Segatto 27 July 2006 (has links)
The aim of this work is to examine the systematic and the historical constitution of Habermas\'s theory of language. By following his own suggestions, according to which it constitutes itself as a \"formal pragmatics tied to Kant\", a \"Kantian formal pragmatics\" or a \"linguistic Kantianism\", we analyze at the first moment how it promotes the convergence of two apparently incompatible philosophical lineages: the Kantian philosophy and the linguistic turn. More specifically, we analyze how it up dates the motive of the \"pragmatic transformation of Kantian philosophy\", fundamental for the second lineage. Later on, we comment on the presentation of the theory of language in the 1970s, when it assumes the form of a theory of communicative competence, associated to a consensus theory of truth. Finally, we comment on the modifications that Habermas proposes to his theory mainly in the 1980s, showing how he tries to respond to the criticism to which he had been exposed.

Many ideas of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) about psychology are still understood, generally, in a very incomplete way or with distortions and misinterpretations in the specialized secondary literature, but mainly in textbooks about history of psychology. A major problem encountered is that there is no consideration or just a superficial examination of the relationship between empirical psychology and pragmatic anthropology. Because of this, there are still many interpretative problems that remain without a proper solution. One of them is the lack of clarity regarding a statement made by Kant in his work of 1781, concerning the relationship between empirical psychology and anthropology. This study aims to better understand this statement and, moreover, through the detailed examination of the relationship between these two fields, to present more fully Kant’s conceptions about psychology. The general thesis defended is that this relationship needs to be considered and examined in depth for the adequate understanding of what Kant really meant in his work of 1781 and the range of his conceptions concerning psychology.

[en] DISINTERESTED THOUGHT: THE QUESTION FOR AESTHETICS AT THE END OF METAHPHYSICS / [pt] PENSAMENTO DESINTERESSADO: A PERGUNTA PELA ESTÉTICA NO FIM DA METAFÍSICA

PEDRO DUARTE DE ANDRADE 27 September 2005 (has links)
[en] The objective in this dissertation is to characterize thought from the requirement of a consideration of aesthetic, that is, of the sensible world, in the context of exhaustion of the Metaphysical understanding that opposed it to the non-sensible. In other words, it intends to formulate the question of the access of thought to reality without resorting to traditional transcendental parameters that, while providing orientation, also subjugated the sensible world to previous rules alien to it. In the context of modern thought, this possibility took form, perhaps for the first time, in the reflections of Kant on beauty. In it, the aesthetic experience was freeed from the cognitives or moral interests that submitted it to conceptual or rational constraints. This meant opening the way for a disinterested approach to thinking, in which one does not ask the truth about a thing, but the truth of the thing. Instead of subordinating the particular to a previous universal rule, disinterested thought seeks to find the universality of that particular in its own singularity. It needs to find the truth that dwells within the thing, and does not stand outside of it. Against the background of this question, this dissertation details the interpretation of disinterestedness, that not only led to the examination of its position in the thought of Kant, but also in that of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, in addition to the references, explicit and implicit, to contemporary authors, especially Martin Heidegger, Walter Benjamin and Hannah Arendt.

Kant on Human Dignity: A Conversation among Scholars

Enslin, John Victor January 2014 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Ronald K. Tacelli / This dissertation aims to examine the notion of 'human dignity' in Kant by means of a conversation with three Kantian scholars. One cannot understand Kant's notion of human dignity without placing it in the context of his moral thought. For this reason we look in Chapter One at the philosopher Roger Sullivan. His major work Immanuel Kant's moral theory includes a highly detailed treatment of human dignity. I shall present an analysis of his understanding within the context of his methodology and his general approach to Kant's moral philosophy. We look in Chapter Two at Susan Shell and her 'Kant on Human Dignity.' In addition to this, we consider Shell's methodology and some of her work on the early Kant where we find the roots of Kant's conception of dignity. Chapter Three addresses Oliver Sensen and his novel interpretation of Kant's use of the term 'dignity.' Utilizing the tools of Analytical Philosophy, he enters into dialogue with Kantian interpreters, suggesting that their understanding of dignity in Kant harbours elements at odds with Kant's thought and that they thus fail to grasp the radical nature of Kant's notion. In the final and Fourth Chapter, I try to bring these scholars into a conversation with each other. First, I show the strengths of each position and then, using insights of Sullivan, Shell and Sensen, I venture to ask whether one could not develop the notion of a phenomenology of dignity. I also consider whether in both Shell's and Sensen's account there is not an implicit dynamic at work, which suggests the necessity of transcendence and the Good. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College. Da restrição da autonomia da pessoa em prol da dignidade: ilustrado por estudo de casos da mídia televisiva / The restriction of the autonomy of the person in behald of dignity (ilustrated by study of cases of television media)

Nascimento, Sandra 08 May 2014 (has links)
This paper aims at doing a reflection about the legitimacy of the restriction of the person\'s autonomy for protecting his/her dignity, emphasizing the cases involving his/her exposition on TV media. Based on the modern concept of human dignity, that confers to man an intrinsic and absolute value, that makes him different of things, due to his capacity of doing his own laws, having, thus, as purposed by Immanuel Kant, an autonomy, the intention is to do an analysis if some treatments given to people that voluntarily participate in some kind of TV programs do represent a violation to their own dignity, and, for this reason, if it\'s justifiable to forbid people to take part in such programs. In the development of this paper will be made a study about the elaboration of the modern concept of human dignity and it\'s relation to autonomy, which allows a person to form his/her convictions according to his/her own values, what is recognized as his/her right in a modern democratic State. It\'ll be done a study to understand if human dignity is indeed an absolute principle or value according to objective criteria that authorizes the limitation of the autonomy of the person to protect him/her without making it represent an improper interference of the State in his/her individual freedom.

Freedom as Self-Legislation: An Examination of Rosseau and Kant

Cross, Roger L. 12 July 1994 (has links)
Rousseau and Kant were philosophers of freedom. Both believed freedom was the essence of humanity, and both believed that "freedom is self-legislation." This thesis examines what they understood to be self-legislation. According to Rousseau natural freedom was lost with the establishment of society. Society is an "unnatural" order and the true basis of society is simply convention. Man is free only if he is subject to laws of his own making, or at least to those laws to which he has consented. The ideal state, according to Rousseau, is the republic based on laws that have been created and adopted by each members of the community. It is in this sense of freedom, for Rousseau, is self-legislation. Kant believed the important issue was demonstrating the metaphysical possibility of freedom, not the reconstruction of society. Kant argued that freedom could be demonstrated, and morality reaffirmed, by focusing on the 11 ought" of reason. The 11 ought 11 transcends the physical world and was a pure law of reason. It is not subject to the physical laws of causality. Man has the ability to act according to this law of reason. Man is transcending the physical realm, and the physical laws of nature, whenever he makes a moral decision based on what he 11 ought 11 to do, or whenever he puts duty before his physical desire. This, Kant argues, is self-legislation, and only here may man hope to be free.

V co smíme doufat? Filosofie náboženství Immanuela Kanta / What may we hope for? Immanuel Kant's Philosophy of Religion

Dudek, Petr January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis named What may we hope for? Immanuel Kant's Philosophy of Religion has the goal to explore Kant's philosophy of religion to answer the question what a reasonable human being may hope for according to I. Kant. To reach the above mentioned goal we are going to deal with Kant's ethics of duty in the first chapter trying to find the answer to the question how the reasonable human being shall live to be able to hope at least. In the second chapter we focus on Kant's critique of proof of God's existence which precedes Kant's fundamental study about postulates of pure practical reason. From the third chapter we begin to map Kant's philosophy of religion chronologically. We enter Kant's prior to critical period and we try to interpret Kant's letter in which we can find the first important statements of our philosopher towards Christianity. Along with the fourth chapter we step into Kant's critical period and we process already mentioned study about postulates of pure practical reason. The last two chapters draw from I. Kant's post-critical document. In the chapter named About Human Nature we meet with Kant's concept of human nature, further we also compare where this concept corresponds with or perhaps differs from the previous philosophical periods of our philosopher. In the last...
