Analysis of Aquifer and Operational Conditions for Successful Soil Aquifer Treatment of Treated Wastewater via Synthesis of Published Full-Scale and Laboratory-Scale StudiesMurray, Matthew I 01 June 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Soil aquifer treatment (SAT) of treated wastewater performance was evaluated across published full-scale and lab-scale studies developing insights on the aquifer and operational factors that affect SAT efficacy. The goal of this study was to develop a basis for predicting the contaminant removal capabilities of any given aquifer during managed recharge with treated wastewater.
Over 40 published SAT studies were reviewed and systematically compared to determine the influence of five major factors on contaminant removal performance: geologic composition, geochemical conditions, hydrogeological conditions, operational methods, and source water quality. Removal mechanisms for standard contaminants (dissolved and total organic carbon, nitrogen, and pathogens) were considered for each factor. By supplementing the theoretical understanding of contaminant removal in SAT systems with full scale and lab scale results, recommendations were developed for practical and effective SAT feasibility standards.
SAT of standard contaminants was found to be most effective in aquifers with a water table below 20-meters. SAT was also most favorable for source water with 10 to 20-mg/L of bulk organics and less than 10-mg/L of total nitrogen. Moreover, extended residence times in the saturated zone provide little additional bulk organic and nitrogen removal for aquifers with vadose zones that achieve more than 85% of total bulk organic removal. The results of this study should enhance feasibility studies for future soil aquifer treatment projects, thereby facilitating the use of sustainable indirect potable reuse.

Antecedents of Parental Psychological Control: A Test of Bowen's TheoryBradshaw, Spencer D. 20 April 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Parental psychological control has been found to be associated with both internalized and externalized problems for youth and adolescents. Research contributing to an understanding of the possible antecedents of parental psychological control is both limited and of need; specifically regarding parents' psychological attributes. This study sample included 323 two-parent families and an identified target child from each family. Bowen's theory of family systems, [chronic] stress, and differentiation of self and its relation to parental psychological control was examined. Differentiation of self was hypothesized to mediate the relationship between chronic stress and parental psychological control. Differentiation was conceptualized and measured using two subscales assessing emotional reactivity and emotional cutoff. Fathers and mothers were included in the same model to assess for potential partner influences as well possible gender differences. Parental age, parental education, and family income were also included as control variables. Study analyses included bivariate correlations, independent T-tests, and structural path models; all based on study variables constructed in a structural equation measurement model. To test for mediation by differentiation of self, an initial structural model examining the relationship between levels of parental chronic stress and parental psychological control was utilized. Only paternal chronic stress and paternal education predicted child-reported levels of parental psychological control. Parent-reported levels of differentiation of self, when included in a structural path model, did not mediate the relationship between chronic stress and psychological control but did have a significant indirect effect on this relationship. Both maternal and paternal chronic stress significantly predicted individual parental levels of emotional reactivity and emotional cutoff. Systemically, maternal levels of emotional cutoff predicted paternal levels of parental psychological control and paternal levels of emotional reactivity predicted maternal levels of parental psychological control. No control variables other than paternal education had a salient, significant, or interpretable effect on endogenous study variables (differentiation of self and parental psychological control). Paternal and maternal levels of emotional reactivity appeared to partially mediate the relationship between paternal education and maternal psychological control. Interpretation for results, study limitations and future directions, and clinical implications are discussed.

The media is littered with various portrayals of aggression. This aggression has been shown to influence the attitudes, beliefs, and subsequent behaviors of its viewers (Bushman & Anderson, 2001). Relational aggression is a newer concern for researchers and has become more prevalent in recent research. Relational aggression is prevalent in the lives of adolescents. Using social cognitive theory (Bandura 2002), information processing theory (Huesmann, 1988), and the general aggression model (Anderson & Bushman, 2002) to justify how adolescents might be developing these relationally aggressive behaviors, this study seeks to expand the literature by evaluating the portrayals of relational aggression in popular teen movies; a genre primarily watched by adolescents. This thesis is a content analysis of the top 30 grossing teen movies for the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s for a total of 90 movies. The study examines three types of relational aggression—direct, indirect, and nonverbal. The following variables were coded for each act of relational aggression: initiator and victim age, gender, sociometrics, attractiveness, SES, and role, their relationship to each other, the context, humor, and consequence of the act of relational aggression. Analysis revealed that relational aggression is extremely prevalent (94.4%) in teen movies. Direct relational aggression is more prevalent in teen movies than both indirect and nonverbal relational aggression. Results indicate that females are portrayed as the primary initiators of relational aggression in teen films. Initiators and victims of relational aggression are primarily portrayed as characters of average attractiveness, average popularity, and as having middle class incomes. Acts of relational aggression are portrayed as not justified and not humorous. However, acts of relational aggression were portrayed as rewarded. No significant differences across decade were found for amount of relational aggression shown or for what type of relational aggression was portrayed. Results showed there were more male aggressors in the 1980s than expected and more female aggressors in the 2000s than expected.

Reading and Listening to Music Increase Resting Energy Expenditure During Indirect Calorimetry in Healthy AdultsSnell, Blaire 01 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has developed an evidence analysis library (EAL) for Nutrition and Dietetics professionals. The EAL is updated by members through workgroups consisting of experts in their fields, most often in response to unanswered questions. One such question is: what kinds of activities can be done during the rest period of an indirect calorimetry test in a healthy population? The objective of our study was to determine if listening to self-selected relaxing music or reading on an electronic device or a magazine effects resting energy expenditure (REE) as measured by an indirect calorimetry test in a healthy population. Answering this question would help indirect calorimetry test administrators know if these simple activities can be done during an indirect calorimetry test without significantly affecting REE but helping subjects remain awake. It would also help standardize the current protocol for indirect calorimetry administration. A randomized trial was conducted during an indirect calorimetry test, under three different conditions (resting, reading, listening to music). Six-five subjects (36 females and 29 males) were used in final data analysis. Inclusion criteria included healthy subjects between the ages of 18-50 years with a stable weight. Exclusion criteria included pregnant or lactating women or individuals who were taking medications known to affect metabolism. Reading, either a magazine or electronic device, resulted in a significant increase of 102.7 kcal/day when compared to resting (p<0.0001). There was no difference in REE when subjects read a magazine or on an electronic device. Listening to self-selected relaxing music increased REE by 27.6 kcal/day compared to rest (p=0.0072). Based on our results, we recommend subjects refrain from reading a magazine or electronic device during a test. Whether or not the smaller difference found while listening to music is practically significant would be a decision for the indirect calorimetry test administrators. Further research could be done to determine the effects other activities have on REE during an indirect calorimetry test. Such activities could include; watching television, texting, or playing passive game.

<p> The NMDS-II detector, located at an underground laboratory within the Pyhasälmi<br>
complex metal mine in central Finland, collated data for 6504 ± 1 hours at 583 m.w.e.<br>
and for 1440 ± 1 hours at 1166 m.w.e.. The detector system consists of a 30 cm cube<br>
Pb-target surrounded by 60 He-3 proportional tubes and a two layer Geiger Counter muon<br>
detection system. The lead target is used to interact with potential dark matter particles, and<br>
neutron numbers are measured with He-3 tubes. The neutron event multiplicity production is<br>
compared to Geant4 simulations, starting with the well measured absolute muon momentum<br>
and angular distribution flux rate at sea level, then propagating the muon flux through rock<br>
while preserving the momentum-angular correlation to a depth 4m above the the detector at<br>
the two depth locations. The muon flux modeling is compared to the uncorrelated Miyake<br>
model at each depth as verification of the muon propagation simulation. Finally, the Geant4<br>
fully simulates the passage of the muon and its induced showers through a model universe<br>
10000 m^2 x 12 m depth, and the simulated response of the detector to the calculated muon<br>
flux, is compared with the data. <br>

<p> The Geant4 prediction and the observed data neutron event multiplicity distributions<br>
have matching power law shapes, k × n^(-p), and do not have exponential shapes. For the<br>
data collected at 583 m.w.e., p=2.36±0.10 with χ2/DoF = 0.76 and for the simulation<br>

Study of high flash point ethyl alcohol-based secondary fluids applied in Ground Source Heat Pumps systemsCarrion Domenech, Luis Enrique January 2019 (has links)
Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) as secondary fluids is very popular as heat transfer fluid for indirect refrigeration system with ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) in several countries such as Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Finland and other European countries. There have been several researches about the future ofthe refrigeration sector, refrigerants and refrigeration systems. Moreover, strict regulations such as F-gasregulation and Kigali Amendment forcing a phase down of many current widely used high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants, i.e. R134a or R410A. Therefore, secondary refrigeration systems and their working fluids are expected to play a key role in order to minimize the refrigerant charge in the systems, reduce the indirect refrigerant leakages as well as increase the safety during operation. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effect different additives to increase the flame point together with ethanol-based secondary fluids and validate their thermophysical properties by comparing them with reference values for pure ethanol water solutions. The study aims to design a new commercial ethyl alcohol-based product for GSHP system that could replace existing ones in the Swedish market and could workwith natural or flammable low GWP refrigerants. Different high flash point additives were tested such as 1-propyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, glycerol andpropylene carbonate. Thermophysical properties were investigated and a GSHP model in Excel was created in order to assess the energy performance of the resulted blends. After screening different blends and assessing the energy performance, glycerol as additive in low concentration seems to be the future for the ethyl alcohol-based secondary fluids because of its high flashpoint (160ºC) that will reduce the flammability risk associated to ethyl alcohol blends, the low viscosity (by 12% lower compared to pure ethyl alcohol blends) that help reduce pumping power by 4.5% compared topure ethyl alcohol blends. Moreover, ethyl alcohol and glycerol blend showed the lost in heat transfer coefficient by 4% lower compared to pure ethyl alcohol blends due to lower thermal conductivity compared to pure ethyl alcohol blends. Finally, it is a rather cheap and natural product which has no problem related to corrosion since ethyl alcohol and glycerol are less corrosive than water. Although, flash point test was not conducted so there is no data regarding the flash point, it is expected the flash point is increased due to the high flash point of glycerol compared to ethyl alcohol or other possible additives. Therefore, it is expected that the flammability risk associated to ethyl alcohol-based secondary fluids is reduced. / Etylalkohol (etanol) som köldbärare är mycket populärt som värmeöverföringsvätska för indirekt kylsystemmed bergvärmepumpsystem (BVP) i Sverige, Norge, Schweiz, Finland och andra europeiska länder. Fleraundersökningar har gjorts om kylsektorns framtid, köldmedier och kylsystem. Dessutom strängaförordningar som F-gas förordning och Kigali- förordning tvingar en utfasning av många nuvarande allmäntanvända köldmedier med den höga globala uppvärmningspotentialen (GWP), dvs. R134a eller R410A. Därför förväntas det att kylsystem och deras köldbärare spela en nyckelroll för att minimera köldmediumsmängd i systemen, minska de indirekta köldmedieläckage och öka säkerheten under drift. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka effekten av olika tillsatser för att öka flammanpunkten tillsammans med etanolbaserade köldbärare och validera deras termofysikaliska egenskaper genom att jämföra dem med referensvärden för rena etanolvattenlösningar. Studien syftar till att utforma en nykommersiell etylalkoholbaserad produkt för BVP-system som skulle kunna ersätta befintliga produkter på den svenska marknaden och kan arbeta med naturliga eller brandfarliga köldmedier med låg GWP. Olika tillsatser med hög flampunkt testades såsom 1-propylalkohol, n-butylalkohol, glycerol och propylenkarbonat. Termofysikaliska egenskaper undersöktes och en BVP-modell i Excel skapades för att bedöma energiprestanda för olika blandningarna. De erhållna resultaten för olika blandningar visar att glycerol i en låg koncentration som tillsats kan vara framtidens additiv för de etylalkoholbaserade köldbärare på grund av dess höga flampunkt (160 ºC) som förmodligen kan minska brandrisken för etylalkoholblandningar. Dessutom hade glycerol och etanolblandningar den lägsta viskositeten (c.a.12% lägre jämfört med ren etylalkoholblandningar) som bidrar tillen minskning av pumpeffekten med c.a. 4,5% jämfört med rena etylalkoholblandningar. Däremot visade etylalkohol och glycerol blandningen c.a. 4% lägre värmeöverövergångstal jämfört med de rena etylalkoholblandningar på grund av lägre värmeledningsförmåga jämfört med ren etylalkoholblandningar. Slutligen är glycerol en ganska billig och naturlig produkt som inte har några korrosionsproblem eftersom etylalkohol och glycerol är mindre frätande än vatten. Även om flampunkttest inte genomfördes i projektet, förväntas det att flampunkten ökas lite på grund av den höga flampunkten av glycerol jämfört med etylalkohol och andra tillsatser. Därför förväntas det att brännbarhetsrisken förknippad med etylalkoholbaserade köldbärare reduceras.

Mitigation Of Motion Sickness Symptoms In 360 Degree Indirect Vision SystemsQuinn, Stephanie 01 January 2013 (has links)
The present research attempted to use display design as a means to mitigate the occurrence and severity of symptoms of motion sickness and increase performance due to reduced “general effects” in an uncoupled motion environment. Specifically, several visual display manipulations of a 360° indirect vision system were implemented during a target detection task while participants were concurrently immersed in a motion simulator that mimicked off-road terrain which was completely separate from the target detection route. Results of a multiple regression analysis determined that the Dual Banners display incorporating an artificial horizon (i.e., AH Dual Banners) and perceived attentional control significantly contributed to the outcome of total severity of motion sickness, as measured by the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ). Altogether, 33.6% (adjusted) of the variability in Total Severity was predicted by the variables used in the model. Objective measures were assessed prior to, during and after uncoupled motion. These tests involved performance while immersed in the environment (i.e., target detection and situation awareness), as well as postural stability and cognitive and visual assessment tests (i.e., Grammatical Reasoning and Manikin) both before and after immersion. Response time to Grammatical Reasoning actually decreased after uncoupled motion. However, this was the only significant difference of all the performance measures. Assessment of subjective workload (as measured by NASA-TLX) determined that participants in Dual Banners display conditions had a significantly lower level of perceived physical demand than those with Completely Separated display designs. Further, perceived iv temporal demand was lower for participants exposed to conditions incorporating an artificial horizon. Subjective sickness (SSQ Total Severity, Nausea, Oculomotor and Disorientation) was evaluated using non-parametric tests and confirmed that the AH Dual Banners display had significantly lower Total Severity scores than the Completely Separated display with no artificial horizon (i.e., NoAH Completely Separated). Oculomotor scores were also significantly different for these two conditions, with lower scores associated with AH Dual Banners. The NoAH Completely Separated condition also had marginally higher oculomotor scores when compared to the Completely Separated display incorporating the artificial horizon (AH Completely Separated). There were no significant differences of sickness symptoms or severity (measured by self-assessment, postural stability, and cognitive and visual tests) between display designs 30- and 60-minutes post-exposure. Further, 30- and 60- minute post measures were not significantly different from baseline scores, suggesting that aftereffects were not present up to 60 minutes post-exposure. It was concluded that incorporating an artificial horizon onto the Dual Banners display will be beneficial in mitigating symptoms of motion sickness in manned ground vehicles using 360° indirect vision systems. Screening for perceived attentional control will also be advantageous in situations where selection is possible. However, caution must be made in generalizing these results to missions under terrain or vehicle speed different than what is used for this study, as well as those that include a longer immersion time.
