Title: Factors Influencing Innovation Capacity of Regional Innovation Hubs Authors: Sanvida Vishani Sawunda Hannadige & Dona Kithmini Chiranthini Weerasinghe Supervisor: Ehsanul Huda Chowdhury Examiner: Maria Fregidou-Malama Date: 28- Jan- 2021   Aim: This study aims to identify the factors influencing innovation capacity of innovation hubs and explore how innovation hubs influence regional innovation process.    Methodology: This is a qualitative study which follows the inductive approach and the strategy of multiple case study. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten respondents in the network of an innovation hub.   Findings: The findings of this study suggest five main factors which positively influence the innovation capacity of an innovation hub. Those are infrastructure, knowledge sharing, culture, marketing strategies and supporting network of the hub. Further through the findings we identified that innovation hub creates a well-balanced socio-economic impact on the region it operates.   Contribution: This study provides a comprehensive knowledge to the existing theories by discovering five theoretical areas which influence innovation capacity. Also it assists the stakeholders of innovation hubs to overcome their deficiencies in order to build a strong innovation capacity. Further, this study encourages innovators, entrepreneurs and investors to work in collaboration with innovation hubs.   Suggestions for Future Research: Qualitative or quantitative methods can be used to explore the outcomes in different perspectives. The newly identified features under marketing strategies can be further studied for their importance in other domains such as ecosystem and stakeholders. The revised framework can be tested in future researches.

政府資助廠商創新政策之附加性研究-台灣製造業之實證分析

本研究的樣本資料來自2006年台灣地區第二次產業創新調查,以及後續追蹤調查所建立的資料庫。主要目的為探討政府資助廠商進行創新活動的政策,對於廠商的附加性程度。 在變數的選擇上,本研究以「在民國97-98年獲得政府資助」作為應變數,而以廠商創新能力、廠商技術來源以及前期(民國93-95年)是否曾獲得政府資助,作為本研究的三構面。本研究的分析分為兩階段,第一階段利用Probit迴歸模型,分析三個構面與政府資助之間的相關性,第二階段則是使用Multi-variate Probit模型,分析廠商在無政府資助情況下,對於其創新活動的因應措施。結合兩階段分析結果,定義出四種典型的情境。 實證結果發現: (1)廠商規模愈大、創新能力愈強、技術來源為自行研發或取得外部知識,具以上特質的廠商,與獲得政府資助具正向關係,且廠商規模對於獲得資助具有顯著正向影響。在無政府資助的情況下,具有以上四種特性的廠商較不會改變其創新活動的行為,因此資助政策之附加性低,屬於情境3:所補非人的情況。 (2)技術來源為購買機器設備則與獲得政府資助具有正向關係,當無政府資助時,會「選擇風險較低的創新活動」。代表政府資助對於此類型廠商具有附加性,屬於情境1:雪中送炭的情況。 (3)委外研發對於獲得政府資助具有顯著負向影響,且當無政府資助時,廠商不會「照原訂計畫進行創新活動」,因此資助政策能為此類廠商帶來較高的附加性,屬於情境4:嗷嗷待「補」的情形。 (4)前期獲得政府資助對於後期獲得政府資助並無顯著正向影響。而廠商在無政府資助時,較可能會改變其創新活動的行為,尤其對「縮小創新活動的資金規模」的選項為顯著正相關,因此政府資助對於此類型廠商存在附加性。 本研究著重於廠商成本面的考量,來詮釋補助政策之附加性,然而若要依此制定政策方向,僅以附加性為依據將顯得不足,為此,本研究最後依據建立的架構與實證模型結果,提出若干後續研究方向的建議。 / The study provides insights into the additionality of government subsidy on firms’ innovation activities. Previous research has focused on the relationship between government funding and private R&D input and output, but no consensus were made. Using a sample of 581 observations in the database of Taiwan Technology Innovation SurveyⅡ, the study contains a two-stage analysis. First, the Probit regression model is used, and the dependent variable is "whether a firm gaining government subsidy in 2008-2009 or not". The explanatory variables include firm size, innovation capacity, technology sources and subsidy history. In the second stage, we used the counterfactual scenario about what could happen if there existed no government-sponsored programs intervention. Firms could choose from four alternatives:1. Abandoning innovative activities. 2. Choosing projects which contain lower risk. 3. Downsizing the scale of capital and 4.Keeping the same project. If firms choose the first one, then the additionality of government subsidy is the highest. If firms choose the second or the third one, then the additionality is in the middle. If firms choose the fourth one, then the additionality is the lowest. In this stage, the Multi-variate Probit model is used. The empirical results show that there is a significant positive correlation between firm size and gaining government subsidy, and a significant negative correlation between outsourcing R&D and gaining government subsidy. In the second stage, we find that subsidy toward the firms which "outsourcing R&D and "purchasing machines" have the highest additionality. Besides, subsidy toward firms which received subsidy in 2004-2006 has median additionality.

Innovationsförmågans påverkan på varumärket : En vindlande resa om redovisningens svårighet att informera om det mest väsentliga / The innovativeness impact on brand value : A winding journey of accounts difficulty to inform about the most essential

Syfte: Att utveckla ett starkt varumärke är ett sätt för företag att utmärka sig från mängden, vilket idag är nödvändigt på grund av den ständigt ökande konkurrenssituationen. Varumärket anses vara ett av företagens mest värdefulla tillgångar men är problematiska att värdera. Problematiken beror bland annat på att värdet på varumärken påverkas av flertalet olika faktorer, däribland företagets innovationsförmåga. Utifrån denna bakgrund har studiens syfte utformats: att undersöka hur värdet på företags varumärken påverkas av deras innovationsförmåga. Metod: Vi har gjort en sekundärdataundersökning, där data tänkts samlas in från databasen Retriever och, eftersom det visade sig att kvalitén i den var bristfällig, från företagens årsredovisningar. P.g.a bristerna i Retrievers databas och otydlig information i årsredovisningar kompletterades studien med tre semi-strukturerade intervjuer. Studien genomfördes på Stockholm Nasdaq OMX om omfattade de största 250 företag som hade minst ett registrerat varumärke. Företag med irrelevant data för studiens syfte eliminerades. Data analyserades genom Pearsons korrelationsanalys och linjär regression. Intervjusvaren analyserades med hjälp av ”well-grundad teori”. Resultat & Slutsats: Studiens resultat visar på att det finns ett positivt samband mellan varumärkesvärdet och FoU. De kompletterande intervjuerna bidrog till att vi uppmärksammandes på skillnaderna mellan praktikers och forskningens syn på väsentligt redovisningsinformation och att bristerna som standarderna har ger företagen möjligheten att kringgå rekommendationerna. Studiens slutsats är att företags varumärken påverkas positivt av företagets innovationsförmåga. Förslag till fortsatt forskning: På grund av begränsade resurser och databasens låga kvalitet har begränsat möjligheten att samla in tillfredsställande data. Därför är ett förslag till fortsatt forskning att genomföra studien på en annan börs än Stockholm Nasdaq OMX. Uppsatsens bidrag: Främst bidrar denna studie till att belysa problemet med att den information som företagen idag redovisar inte är tillräcklig för att ge kunskap om företagens innovations- förmåga och immateriella tillgångar. Ett bidrag är även att det finns ett samband mellan företags varumärken och deras innovationsförmåga hos de företag som undersökts, men på grund av den begränsade datamängden är det svårt att dra några generella slutsatser om detta samband. / Aim: Developing an strong brand is a way for companies to stand out of the crowd, which today is necessary to conquer on the competitive market. The brand value is one of the most important assets in annual reports, but there are difficult to estimate an reliable value. It depends on the fact that the brand value is affected by few different factors, including innovativ-eness. Due to the thesis background the purpose enunciate: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate it there is a correlation between companies brand value and innovation capacity. Method: We have done a secondary data analysis, with help from the database Retriever. The combination of faint information and lack of quality in Retrievers capacity it contributed that we had to use semi-structured interviews as an complement to full follow the purpose. The paper per- form at Stockholm Nasdaq OMX and included de 250 largest companies that at least had one registered brand value. Companies with inapplicable data for the purpose of the study was elimi- nated. As a final the data was analysed by dint of linear regression, Pearsons correlation analysis, and interviews thru ”well-grounded theory”. Result & Conclusion: The result of the study indicated that there are positive relation between brand value and R&D. The complemented interviews contributed that the authors observed diff- erences between practitioners and researchers on the perception of between essential accounting information and the opportunities to provide principles to circumvent the recommendations. The conclusion of the study is that companies brand value are positively affected by the innovativeness. Suggestions for future research: Due to the lack of resources and qualitative database it wasn’t possible to satisfy the purpose of the study. Consequently our suggestion for future research will contain the recommendation to do the study on another stock exchange. Contribute of the thesis: Mainly this study contributes to illuminate the fact of accounting information: companies doesn't inform sufficient information to increase knowledge for there own business innovativeness and immaterial assets. Which can be seen as a problem. Second contribute comprises that there is, hence small or implicit, relation between brand value and their companies innovativeness at the researched companies. Consequently the results gets difficult to draw general conclusion from.

A capacidade de inovação como formadora de valor: análise dos vetores de valor em empresas brasileiras de biotecnologia / The innovation capacity as value constructor: analysis of value drivers in Brazilian biotechnology companies

Trabalhos acadêmicos têm procurado explicar o impacto do uso estratégico da tecnologia no desempenho das empresas e identificar as práticas adotadas pelas empresas para o gerenciamento de sua estratégia tecnológica, bem como a relação desta com a sua competitividade. Porém, o entendimento da inter-relação entre os fatores que geram o processo de inovação e seu impacto econômico sobre as empresas ainda é deficiente. Neste sentido, na busca de elementos que possam contribuir para minimizar esta lacuna, este estudo procurou um melhor entendimento sobre a relação entre a capacidade de inovação e a formação de valor, através da identificação dos vetores de valor da capacidade de inovação capazes de gerar fluxos de caixa que contribuam para a formação de valor da empresa. A capacidade de inovação foi definida como o potencial interno para gerar novas idéias, identificar novas oportunidades no mercado e desenvolver uma inovação comercializável através dos recursos e competências existentes na empresa. Operacionalmente, a capacidade de inovação é um construto formado pela inter-relação sinérgica de sua cultura organizacional, de seus processos internos e de suas relações interorganizacionais. Estudos de casos múltiplos foram realizados em cinco empresas que trabalham com produtos e processos biotecnológicos. Foram observados valores e comportamentos peculiares da cultura organizacional, alguns processos internos característicos das empresas inovadoras e as relações interorganizacionais. Dentre os processos internos, foram analisados a gestão da carteira de projetos, a formulação e implementação da estratégia da empresa e a forma de assegurar uma melhor contribuição dos profissionais de P&D para a empresa. Através do uso de Mapas Cognitivos, foram identificados os traços dos vetores de valor da capacidade de inovação e a forma como estes vetores se inter-relacionam. A análise comparativa dos mapas traçados em cada caso estudado revelou serem o fator humano e a gestão participativa potentes vetores de valor, os quais não foram contemplados nas premissas deste estudo e devem ser estudados com maior profundidade em estudos posteriores. / Academic works have tried to explain the strategic use of technology and its impact in the companies’ performance, and to identify practices adopted by companies for the management of their technological strategy, as well as the relation of these with its competitiveness. However, the understanding of the relationship between factors that generate the innovation process and its economic impact on companies is still deficient. In order to minimize this gap, this study searched for a better agreement on the relationship between innovation capacity and the formation of value by identifying the existing value drivers in the innovation capacity capable to generate cash flows that contribute to the company value capture. Innovation capacity was defined as the internal potential to generate new ideas, identify new opportunities in the market and develop a marketable innovation by leveraging existing resources and competences. Operationally, innovation capacity is a construct formed by the synergistic interrelationships of its organizational culture, its internal processes and networking. Five biotechnology companies were analyzed through multiple case studies. In each case, particular attention was given to values and behaviors of the organizational culture, some characteristic internal processes of the innovative companies and their networking. Among internal processes, project portfolio management, strategy formulation and implementation and the way to assure a better contribution of the R&D personnel were analyzed. Using Cognitive Maps, it was possible to identify the innovation capacity value drivers and the way they interact. The comparison of the cases showed that human factors and participative management are powerful value drivers. Since these two factors have not been contemplated in the premises of this study, they need to be extensively analyzed in future studies.

In this context, innovation is understood as the creation and implementation of new processes, products, services and methods of delivery which result in significant improvements in efficiency, effectiveness and quality of results. This study sought to develop a methodology to support the Regional Electoral Court of Santa Catarina (TRE/SC ), aimed at systematizing and developing their capacity for innovation. Therefore, we sought to initially understand the innovation environment of the organization, and then develop the methodology. The research was characterized as a descriptive case study - evaluative, qualitative study regarding the characteristics and mode of inquiry. It was adopted as tools for collecting data to document research, semi-structured interviews and participant observation. As a result, it was proposed to model the innovation process in order to systematize and strengthen the innovation capacity of the TRE/SC - aiming to promote the improvement of its internal processes as well as encouraging the development of innovations intentional, aligned to strategy TRE/SC and integrated into the management system of the organization. The proposed model includes five stages (initiation, development, implementation, evaluation and adjustments) and addresses the innovation process in a systematic way covering opportunity identification, identification of stakeholders and their expectations; classification of ideas, analysis of feasibility, sustainability and risks, prioritization of innovations; approval, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination adjustments. / Nos últimos anos, embora ainda de forma incipiente, verifica-se no Brasil uma ampliação nos estudos sobre inovação no setor público. Nesse contexto, a inovação é entendida como sendo a criação e a implementação de novos processos, produtos, serviços e métodos de entrega, que resultam em significativas melhorias na eficiência, eficácia ou qualidade dos resultados. O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver uma metodologia de apoio ao Tribunal Regional Eleitoral de Santa Catarina (TRE/SC), voltada à sistematização e ao desenvolvimento de sua capacidade de inovação. Para tanto, procurou-se inicialmente compreender o ambiente de inovação da organização, para então desenvolver a metodologia. A pesquisa caracterizou-se como um estudo de caso descritivo-avaliativo, de abordagem qualitativa. Adotou-se como instrumentos de coleta de dados a pesquisa documental, entrevistas semiestruturadas, bem como a observação participante. Como resultado, propôs-se a modelagem do processo de inovação visando a sistematizar e a intensificar a capacidade de inovação do TRE/SC com intuito de promover o aperfeiçoamento dos seus processos internos, bem como o incentivo ao desenvolvimento de inovações intencionais, alinhadas à estratégia do TRE/SC e integradas ao sistema de gestão da organização. O modelo proposto contempla cinco etapas (iniciação, desenvolvimento, implementação, avaliação e ajustes) e aborda o processo de inovação de forma sistêmica abrangendo a identificação da oportunidade; identificação das partes interessadas e das suas expectativas; classificação das idéias; análise de viabilidade, de sustentabilidade e de riscos; priorização das inovações; aprovação; implementação; avaliação; ajustes e disseminação.

However, the literature reveals that the methods and research manuals for innovation are targeted primarily at businesses and industrial sector, with a lack of studies in public institutions. This study purposed to deepen and better understand the nature of innovation in public organizations and which aspects may influence its ability to generate innovations and, on that basis, to build an analytical model that meets the characteristics of existence and purpose of these organizations. To understand the concept of innovation, a survey was conducted involving several theoretical approaches - from a neoclassical economic perspective to public innovation approach - in which we sought to combine the concepts that were most relevant to the purpose of this study, namely the approaches: Systems of Innovation, Social Innovation, Sociology of Innovation, and Public Innovation. Innovation is understood, based on this research, to be a process that is relational, social and technological, dependent on the multiple capabilities of participants involved (economic, social and political), of co-produce knowledge and which generates outcomes of social, economic, and political benefit. Innovation capabilities in public organizations are understood as the potential of the organization to generate innovations. The determinants for its innovation capacity are the organizational, technical, relational, and finalistic capacities. The survey consisted of a theoretical and bibliographical study, combined with an exploratory study in a public organization in order to better understand the nature and characteristics that influence the development of innovations on these organizations. The case study was conducted at the Technological Incubator of Popular Cooperatives of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in order to apply the analytical model developed. Data analysis was conducted based on primary and secondary data provided during the investigation. The results showed that many innovation capabilities can be improved and developed in order to increase the outcome of the activities with its target group and to improve organizational performance. But for that to happen there is a need of more support and interaction from the state and from stakeholders. There is also a need for more inclusive public policies, financial and technological investments, and above all, the recognition of these activities by the local innovation system. / A inovação no setor público é hoje reconhecida como um meio eficaz de aumento da eficiência e da capacidade das organizações públicas de responderem aos anseios coletivos, possibilitando uma melhor qualidade na entrega de serviços e de atendimento às demandas sociais. Contudo, a literatura revela que os métodos e manuais de pesquisa em inovação são direcionados principalmente para o setor privado, faltando estudos em instituições públicas. Desta maneira, este estudo intencionou aprofundar e entender melhor a natureza das inovações em organizações públicas e quais os aspectos podem influenciar em sua capacidade de gerar inovações e, com base nisso, construir um modelo analítico que atenda às características que estruturam a existência e finalidade dessas organizações. A pesquisa partiu das seguintes indagações: qual a natureza da inovação nas organizações públicas? Quais os aspectos que influenciam em sua capacidade de inovação? Quais categorias devem ser consideradas na análise de sua capacidade para inovação? A compreensão do conceito de inovação passou por um resgate conceitual a diversas abordagens teóricas ¿ desde uma perspectiva econômica neoclássica até uma abordagem pública da inovação ¿ em que se buscou unir as concepções que fossem mais relevantes ao intuito deste estudo, a saber, as abordagens: dos Sistemas de Inovação; da Inovação Social; da Sociologia da Inovação; e da Inovação Pública. Além disso, foi realizado o levantamento das metodologias e manuais hoje disponibilizados para mensuração da inovação no setor público, assim como, a literatura pertinente ao desenvolvimento da capacidade de inovação no âmbito da organização. A inovação é aqui compreendida como um processo relacional, social e tecnológico dependente das múltiplas capacidades dos atores envolvidos (econômicos, sociais e políticos) de coproduzirem conhecimentos e gerar resultados de uso social, econômico e político. As capacidades de inovação em organizações públicas são compreendidas como o potencial que essa organização tem de gerar inovações. Os fatores determinantes para sua capacidade de inovação são suas capacidades organizacionais, técnicas, relacionais, e finalísticas. A pesquisa consistiu num estudo teórico-bibliográfico, combinado ao estudo exploratório numa organização pública, a fim de entender melhor qual a natureza e características que influenciam o desenvolvimento de inovações nessas organizações. O estudo de caso foi realizado na Incubadora Tecnológica de Cooperativas Populares da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro sendo aplicado o modelo de análise desenvolvido. A análise dos dados foi feita a partir de dados primários e secundários reunidos durante o período da investigação. Os resultados mostraram que muitas capacidades de inovação podem ser melhoradas e desenvolvidas a fim de aumentar o impacto das atividades com seu público-alvo e seu desempenho organizacional. Mas para que isso aconteça é preciso que haja um maior apoio e interação estatal e de agentes relevantes. São necessárias políticas públicas mais inclusivas, investimentos financeiros e tecnológicos e, principalmente, o reconhecimento dessas atividades pelo sistema de inovação local

Among internal processes, project portfolio management, strategy formulation and implementation and the way to assure a better contribution of the R&D personnel were analyzed. Using Cognitive Maps, it was possible to identify the innovation capacity value drivers and the way they interact. The comparison of the cases showed that human factors and participative management are powerful value drivers. Since these two factors have not been contemplated in the premises of this study, they need to be extensively analyzed in future studies.

Modelo multidimensional para la construcción y desarrollo de la capacidad de innovación abierta en pymes

[ES] Esta investigación propone un modelo que orienta a las PYMES en sus procesos para incrementar su capacidad innovadora. La metodología utilizada se basó en la caracterización de las prácticas para la construcción y el desarrollo de la capacidad de innovación a partir de revisiones sistemáticas de la literatura científica. Posteriormente, se validó en una muestra de las pymes para los sectores priorizados por el gobierno (Agroindustria, Sistema Moda, Construcción y TIC), el nivel de aplicación de las variables y estadísticamente se definió el modelo que explica la incidencia de las variables en los resultados financieros de las pymes. Por último, se realizó un mapeo riguroso de los actores que componen el Sistema Nacional de Competitividad, Ciencia y Tecnología e Innovación de Colombia, al identificar su geolocalización, objetivo, instrumentos disponibles y roles bajo la teoría de Ecosistemas de Innovación. Como variable dependiente se consideraron los resultados exitosos de las empresas medidos a partir de la rentabilidad igual o superior a la media del sector. Precisamente, se identificaron nueve variables relacionadas con aquellos factores que permiten la construcción y el desarrollo de la capacidad innovadora, las cuales inciden en los resultados financieros de las pymes. Por otra parte, frente al mapeo de actores del ecosistema y de los instrumentos disponibles para promover el desarrollo de estrategias innovadoras en las pymes de los 4 sectores de estudio, se evidenció una alta concentración de geolocalización en las 2 ciudades más grandes de Colombia (Bogotá D.C. y Medellín), y pese a que ofrecen programas con alcance nacional se tiene poco acceso por la falta de recursos. Estas brechas se describen en el CONPES 3866 sobre la adquisición de conocimiento y tecnología, y ponen en desventaja a empresas localizadas en regiones apartadas de ciudades intermedias que no cuentan con actores articuladores y facilitadores. The methodology used was based on the characterization of practices for the construction and development of innovation capacity based on systematic reviews of the scientific literature. Subsequently, the level of application of the variables was validated in a sample of SMEs for the sectors prioritized by the government (Agribusiness, Fashion System, Construction and ICT), and statistically the model that explains the incidence of the variables in the financial results of SMEs. Finally, a rigorous mapping of the actors that make up the National System of Competitiveness, Science and Technology and Innovation of Colombia was carried out, by identifying their geolocation, objective, available instruments and roles under the theory of Innovation Ecosystems. As a dependent variable, the successful results of the companies were considered, measured from profitability equal to or greater than the sector average. Precisely, nine variables were identified related to those factors that allow the construction and development of innovative capacity, which affect the financial results of SMEs. On the other hand, facing the mapping of ecosystem actors and the available instruments to promote the development of innovative strategies in SMEs of the 4 study sectors, a high concentration of geolocation was evidenced in the 2 largest cities of Colombia (Bogotá D.C. and Medellín), and even though they offer programs with a national scope, there is little access due to lack of resources. These gaps are described in CONPES 3866 on the acquisition of knowledge and technology and put at a disadvantage companies located in remote regions of intermediate cities that do not have coordinating and facilitating actors. Etude explicative de l’innovation à partir des connaissances : proposition d’une approche par les capacités / Knowledge based innovation : an explanatory study according to a capability approach

L’objet de cette thèse est l’analyse de l’innovation à partir des connaissances autour de l’approche Knowledge-Based Innovation (KBI) qui décrit l’innovation à travers le prisme de la connaissance. L’innovation s’apparente, foncièrement, à un processus de création, d’application et de diffusion de différents types de connaissances. Cette recherche se focalise sur la phase cognitive de l’innovation dont l’ancrage choisi a été celui d’une approche par les capacités. Nous cherchons alors à identifier les capacités organisationnelles qui sous-tendent l’innovation en amont et à expliquer comment ces capacités s’articulent pour favoriser l’innovation à partir des connaissances. A la lumière des développements théoriques effectués, nous avons élaboré notre modèle conceptuel de recherche qui consacre le rôle médiateur de la capacité d’absorption.La démarche méthodologique appliquée est qualimétrique. Deux études empiriques ont été menées. La première est qualitative, basée sur des entretiens exploratoires. Elle a permis, dans un premier temps, de décrire et d’illustrer les relations étudiées, et dans un second temps, d’affiner nos interrogations et de les enrichir par deux nouvelles propositions de recherche. La deuxième étude est quantitative. Elle s’est basée sur l’administration du questionnaire conçu, à des entreprises françaises œuvrant majoritairement dans le secteur industriel. Cette étude, basée sur la méthode des équations structurelles, a validé globalement le modèle développé en affirmant la médiation partielle de la capacité d’absorption, mais elle a rejeté, toutefois, l’existence de relations entre les investissements en R&D et la capacité d’absorption. / The purpose of this thesis is the analysis of the Knowledge-Based Innovation (KBI) which describes innovation through the prism of knowledge approach. Innovation seems essentially like a process of creation, application and dissemination of different types of knowledge. This research focuses on the cognitive phase of innovation explained according to a capability approach. We seek to identify organizational capabilities that sustain innovation and to explain how these capabilities are linked to promote innovation based on knowledge. We developed then a conceptual model that establishes the mediating role of absorptive capacity.Our methodology is based on two empirical studies. The first is qualitative, based on exploratory interviews. It enabled to illustrate the studied relationships, to refine our questions and to enrich the conceptual model with two new research proposals. The second study is quantitative. It is based on the administration of the questionnaire designed for French companies which operate mainly in the industrial sector. This study, based on a structural equation method, validated the overall developed model. It asserted the partial mediation of the absorption capacity. However the existence of relationships between investment in R&D and absorptive capacity was rejected
