Student persistence among foreign students at a faith-based higher education institution in the Western Cape

Raymond, Romeo Ernest January 2021 (has links)
Magister Educationis (Adult Learning and Global Change) - MEd(AL) / The notion of student persistence is one that remains a topic for lifelong learning. Many scholars pursue an understanding of this phenomenon yet it remains an unsaturated subject for further studies. Furthermore, many countries embrace international students in their universities and colleges for various reasons. South Africa is no different. The intake of international students at this particular institution of interest is mainly faith-based; many of these students are associated with the same faith or have some religious background. Combining the two phenomena (persistence and international studentship) seems an area that could open doors to new knowledge. So I ask the question: “Do foreign students persist more consistently than local students/nationals? And if so, why?” This then formed the basis for my key question in this study: “What are the relationships between social integration and student persistence?”

Idrott som integrationsmetod : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om en svensk kommuns strategiska integrationsarbete / Sports as a method for integration : A qualitative interview study about a Swedish municipality's strategic integration work

Andersson, Marika January 2021 (has links)
As a result of the significant increase of migrants coming to Sweden in 2015, the Swedish government has increased the strategies on integration within agencies and municipalities in the country. Integration through sports is one of these methods. To summarize, previous research on sports as an integration method shows that sports can be viewed as a field for meetings between differentiated ethnic groups. Integration in this matter measures by how well the migrants familiarize and adapt to Swedish society and the cultural norms and values within Sweden. The aim of this upcoming interview-study is to examine how a Swedish municipality explain their method of integration through sports, performed by non-profit sports associations. Municipality workers, viewed through previous sociological research and theories, tend to idealize the image of how they value their work. However this doesn’t necessarily add up with the actually performed work. Because non-profit associations form the integrative sports activities, one could argue that there is in fact a split opinion between what municipalities aims to do themselves, and what is achieved by external resources incorporated in the municipalities guidelines. This is therefor the subject that the upcoming study aims to examine. However, in contrast to previous research on the field, this study examines the question; how is integration through sports designed and what challenges has come with it?, rather than further investigating how well integration is achieved through sports.

Lind, Per January 2013 (has links)
This paper takes up a real scenario where a company has bought another company, and needs to combine its IT environments. We start by going through the theory that is needed in order to plan the transfer of a number of different components. After that the method takes us through how the transfer was made for each sub component. The result from this fusion have been a success from the goals established in the project.

Choosing integration strategy: Trading risk for value : A multiple case study in post-acquisition integration

Dahlberg, Oliver, Tonelid, Teodor January 2022 (has links)
The importance of the post acquisition integration in order to realize the anticipated value from an acquisition has been researched from various angles. Scholars have identified several distinct integration strategies that acquiring firms implement, that differs to what extent the acquired firm is integrated. This paper examines why firms choose a specific integration strategy, and how the strategy is implemented. A multiple case study was conducted with three Swedish companies in different industries, all with technology as a common denominator. Through an inductive approach, the empirical data was coded and analyzed. With the help of existing literature, the analysis showed that the dimension risk aversion can be added to the existing body of literature to explain the choice of integration strategy. The analysis also indicated that an absorbent integration strategy comes with more human resource challenges, however the benefit is a potentially higher value creation.

En mötesplats för integration : En kvalitativ studie kring ett språkcafé och hur det kan hjälpa deltagarna med viktiga delar i deras integration / A Meeting Place for Integration : A Qualitative Study of a Language Café and How It Can Help the Participants With Important Parts of Their Integration

Jonasson, Ida January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to find out which functions of a language café in Karlskrona have for its participants and how it can help them with their integration process. At the language café immigrants and natives meet to talk and socialize together, with the idea that the immigrants should practice the language. The study is based on interviews with the immigrants, and with yhe person in charge og the café, to find answer for the purpose of this study and essay. Two questions have been asked: What functions does the language café fulfill for the participants and why do they participate? And, in what way can the language café contribuate to the participants' integration? Diaz's (1996;1997) integration theory was used as a model to analyze which integration dimensions the language café helps the participants with. The main result of the study shows that 1) the participants primarily participate to practice the language but also meet Swedes and other immigrants, and 2) that it mainly benefits their communicative and social integration.

Through the discourse and metaphor analysis shows differences between the respective blocs, as well as their objectives. Second part deals with US foreign policy in its historical context in relation to other nations within the region, and transformaton of this relationship into current policy of bilateral 4 free trade agreements. Discourse analysis of the key texts and revealed dominance metaphors suggest that the United States uses bilateral free trade agreements to maintain control over the region. Keywords USA, Mexico, Latin America, Western Hemisphere, NAFTA, Mercosur, bilateral free trade agreements, discourse analysis, metaphors, foreign policy, manifest destiny, integration

MODERATERNAS INTEGRATIONSPOLITIK -En studie om Moderaternas integrationspolitiska idéer under tidsperioden 2001–2020

Emma, Gode, Andreas, Halmai January 2020 (has links)
Swedish migration and integration policy have been well debated in recent years. There are disagreements between the parliamentary parties regarding how the policy problems should be solved in the long run. This study will examine how the Moderate party describes their integration ideas in policy documents. The purpose is to investigate whether and how the Moderates’ integration policy has changed during the period 2001-2020. Carl Dahlström has a theory that categorizes immigration policy types, which have been used to clarify the political ideas within the Moderate party. This study shows that the Moderate party has a policy that is responsible for the individual’s freedom and right. Integration policy must create opportunities for people to become a part of the Swedish society. During the last period 2018-2020, however, the party began to make more demands on immigrants, such as language requirements. The focus has shifted from presenting most general measures to more selective ones. With more selective measures, the Moderate party now wants to create a better integration that especially supports immigrants.

Trying to Make it “Feel Like Home”: The Familial Curriculum of (Re)Constructing Identities and Belonging of Immigrant Parents Living in Finland

Chajed, Avanti January 2022 (has links)
With globalization and migration of people and ideas becoming an increasing reality around the world, the needs of immigrant families and students is vital for countries to consider, particularly within their educational systems. This is true especially in the Nordic countries, where the national discourse of equality and egalitarianism are increasingly questioned due to increased awareness of inequality in society as immigration from outside of Europe continues to rise, particularly in Finland. Multiculturalism and integration are thus a relatively new but pressing concepts gaining attention in the Finnish education system. Research in the Nordics that has looked at approaches to integration has typically looked at the institutional practices of integration, particularly in schools, but research on families’ responses to these efforts has often not been nuanced enough to consider their experiences holistically and in depth. Literature from the Nordics has often also taken deficit perspectives on immigrant families and their communities. This study takes an asset-based, narrative approach to understand the knowledge of immigrant parents of their experiences with schools in Finland and their aspirations for the education of their children. Using a sociocultural framework to understand identity as constructed through practice, it combines narrative inquiry with ethnographic approaches to decolonize research on immigrant families in the Nordics. Through the narratives of three racialized immigrant parents, their experiences with belonging and engaging in practices that span across national borders allow for new conceptualizations of integration that move beyond traditional assimilationist and deficit perspectives.

Psykedelisk integration - ett öppet fönster för utveckling : En kartläggande litteraturöversikt om integrationens roll inom psilocybin-assisterad terapi / Psychedelic integration – An open window for development : A scoping review on the role of integration in psilocybin-assisted therapy

Berglund, Marcus, Ajemark, Simon January 2023 (has links)
Nyckelord: psykedelisk terapi, integration, kartläggande litteraturöversikt / In the last two decades, the research and interest in psychedelic therapy has grownin the western world. In a quick overview of the field and the narrative that emerges, the concept of integration is described in the literature as an important component of psychedelic therapy. Descriptions of what integration as an activity is, can or should be, differ in the scientific literature. However to our knowledge no previous compilation has been made of the role and importance of integration in modern clinical research. That such a compilation is made is of particular importance as a basis for possible future treatment. This is thus the purpose of this essay. More specifically, the following questions were intended to be answered: (I) How are interventions following the psychedelic session described? (II) What is the purpose of the subsequent intervention? (III) How do the studies justify their method? The questions were answered via a scoping review and associated methodology. The literature search generated 228 results in which a total of 17 studies were included. The data was analyzed via a basic manifest content analysis. The result showed that integration is minimally described in the included studies and that these have different descriptions of the integration process. Furthermore, the descriptions of the purpose of the integrative conversation differed in the various studies. Finally, an account of the theoretical basis and discussion of integration as part of the treatment was missing. Key words: psychedelic therapy, integration, scoping review
