Discursive assessment practices in a special school for girls identified with a disability in one Arabic-speaking Gulf-Arabian country

Larry, Farida January 2019 (has links)
This study examines discursive assessment practices in a special school for girls identified with a disability in an Arabian-Gulf country. The study is driven by a notable absence of research on girls with disability in the Arab world, and the need for analysing practices that shape their identities and future trajectories. To disclose the mechanisms, processes, and tools influencing the coconstruction of girls' identities by members of a multidisciplinary team, I developed an analytic framework that draws on three theories: systemic functional linguistics, critical genre analysis and sociocultural theory of discourse and identity production. The main data source is the audio-record of conversations that took place at case-conference meetings (CCMs). To describe the genre of a CCM and to disclose what went on, who was involved, and what outcomes were achieved, I constructed three narratives: 'The most relevant thing about us', 'Much ado about everything', and 'Not so great expectations'. These narratives revealed the object, goals, and the outcomes of talk. With respect to the object of talk, or the knowledge underpinning assessment practices, there was much focus on girls' diagnostic histories and scores in IQ tests; they were given a high priority and perceived as key to understanding the girls. Analysis also revealed a resistance to move beyond dichotomous thinking (i.e. girls are either trainable or educable). The goals of talk were to pass on information, to share assessment results, and to list objectives for intervention, each practitioner within her domain of expertise. This mode of passing on - rather than - discussing information and assessment results limited the prospect to benefit from the distributed knowledge of practitioners. The outcomes of talk were mediated by the two preceding discursive actions. A preoccupation with girls' medical diagnosis, and a focus on passing on rather than discussing assessment reinforced deficit thinking. Further, categories assigned to girls stood as self-fulfilling prophesies, and as predictors of girls' future performance. The space to create more positive identities was evident, however, where practitioners knew little about girls' genetic or developmental disabilities. The implications of these objectifying practices are serious with respect to Gulf-Arabian countries and to similar Muslim sociocultural contexts. Perceiving diagnosis as the absolute truth feeds fatalistic beliefs further and results in inactivity and invisibility. Implications are offered for policy and practice and for future research.

Health promoting work environment in the operating room–from the perspective of the operating room nurses. : A qualitative study

Sandersen, Vivi-Ann January 2010 (has links)
Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to gain deeper knowledge of what operating room nurses consider positive in their work environment, thereby promoting employee health and making them stay working in the operating theatre. Method: A modified grounded theory was used to analyze ten open interviews. Result: Analysisof the interviews yielded a core category: inter-professional teamwork that focuses on patient safety. It also identified three subcategories that generate positive teamwork (employee validation, increased opportunities for continuing education, work predictability) and three subcategories that show the consequences of positive teamwork (effective work patterns, experiencing work as meaningful and positive relationships with colleagues). The core category illustrates teamwork that is based on support, mutual respect, trust, clear communication, and coordination. Such teamwork demands the possibility of participating in the decision-making process, focusing on professional work, and making work highly predictable. The consequences of such teamwork include increased jobsatisfaction, an effective and meaningful work experience, and supportive relationships with colleges. Conclusion: From the perspective of operating room nurses interviewed during this study, positive inter-professional teamwork can create a work environment that promotes health, enhances jobsatisfaction, exerts control over work demands, and increases patient safety. The conditions mentioned in this study can be implemented immediately in the workplace. Future research should focus on the different aspects of the inter-professional team /
ISBN 987-91-85721-99-3

The value of working together : A qualitative study on coordination and collaboration from an employee and managerial perspective

Halleröd, Mikaela January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate how different occupational categories within adult education in Swedish for immigrants (SFI) interact within the framework of their common business. As a method for carrying out the study, I have used qualitative interviews. The data material presents opportunities and difficulties that appear around working together. The empirical material has been processed through thematic analysis. The theoretical starting point for the study is a model of different degrees of vertical and horizontal integration for understanding collaboration. The result shows that there are a variety of temporary collaborations. Through interviews the study give examples of professional categories that meet in everyday work. In addition, work takes place between different professional categories in a more coordinated form through teams. Furthermore, the respondents' experiences of the value of collaborating, such as strengthened relationships and a better working environment, are made visible. Another highlight that is mentioned is the increased possibility for staff to identify the need for support from the students, which leads to better adaptations of teaching. The result also shows how the business is coordinated through teams, and the potential for collaboration. Cooperation between professional categories is not fully achieved today within sfi. The conclusions show that there is a consensus among managers and other occupational categories considering which mechanisms make it difficult or possible to cooperate. There are no routines for collaboration today. What employees also demand is someone who leads the work, makes decisions and bears the responsibility of planning, implementing and following up the collaboration.

Who is actually in charge? : A qualitative interview study about the relations of power in collaboration between social services and forensic psychiatry

Rydberg, Erik, Macrì, Micaela January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine social workers and health care counsellors experiences of cooperation between forensic psychiatry and social services during discharge of forensic psychiatric clients, seen from a power perspective. The study's empiricism is based on eight semi-structured interviews, four with each professional group, which were analyzed using a thematic analysis. The study's conclusions show that collaboration between social services and forensic psychiatry is affected by organizational, financial and inter personal factors that are difficult to affect. The study confirms previous collaboration research that shows difficulties in collaboration when actors have different conditions, assignments and goals. The conclusions of this study lead us to understand that the interviewees experiences of collaboration between forensic psychiatry and social services can be understood through: the value of compromise, the understanding of each other's conditions and needs, the experience of a lack of mandate, powerlessness and role confusion.
