From expatriates' information needs to information management in the expatriation cycle

Andre, M, Barrulas, M J January 2006 (has links)
This study is aimed at to identify and to understand the role of information in what concerns the mobility process of top executives, helping organisations to make the most of their expatriatesâ experiences. The methodological approach chosen was the case study, carried out in an economic group of the Portuguese financial sector with several business operations abroad. Several data collection methods were used, including a questionnaire survey, in-depth interviews and in loco interaction with the expatriates in three different countries. Based on the analysis of expatriatesâ information needs, a typology of information throughout the complete cycle is described and two critical moments are identified. These moments correspond to transitions of expatriatesâ informational spaces: first the moment of arrival to the host country and second, when they return to their home country. The incorporation of expatriatesâ information in the organizational information system, across the various phases of the expatriation cycle, is summarized.

The shifting balance of intellectual trade in information studies

Cronin, Blaise, Meho, Lokman I. 02 1900 (has links)
The authors describe a large-scale, longitudinal citation analysis of intellectual trading between information studies and cognate disciplines. The results of their investigation reveal the extent to which information studies draws on and, in turn, contributes to the ideational substrates of other academic domains. Their data show that the field has become a more successful exporter of ideas as well as less introverted than was previously the case. In the last decade, information studies has begun to contribute significantly to the literatures of such disciplines as computer science and engineering on the one hand and business and management on the other, while also drawing more heavily on those same literatures.

Beyond Aboutness: Classifying Causal Links in the Service of Interdisciplinarity

Gnoli, Claudio, Szostak, Rick January 2009 (has links)
Most scholarship, and almost all interdisciplinary scholarship, involves the investigation of causal relationships among phenomena. Yet existing classification systems in widespread use have not focused on classifying works in terms of causal relationships. In order to allow all users interested in a particular causal link to readily find (only) all relevant works, it is necessary to develop a classification of phenomena such that each phenomenon occurs in only one place, and a classification of the sort of relationships that exist among phenomena. Such a classification would be of huge benefit to interdisciplinary scholars, and would also be useful for disciplinary scholars. In particular it will enhance the rate of discovery of "undiscovered knowledge".

Environment and Planning B as a Journal:The interdisciplinarity of its environment and the citation impact

Leydesdorff, Loet January 2006 (has links)
Environment and Planning B (forthcoming) / To be published in Environment and Planning B (2007; forthcoming). Abstract: The citation impact of Environment and Planning B can be visualized using its citation relations with journals in its environment as the links of a network. The size of the nodes is varied in correspondence to the relative citation impact in this environment. Additionally, one can correct for the effect of within-journal â selfâ -citations. The network can be partitioned and clustered using algorithms from social network analysis. After transposing the matrix in terms of rows and columns, the citing patterns can be mapped analogously. Citing patterns reflect the activity of the community of authors who publish in the journal, while being cited indicates reception. Environment and Planning B is cited across the interface between the social sciences and the natural sciences, but its authors cite almost exclusively from the domain of the Social Science Citation Index.

Η διεπιστημονικότητα ως νέο παράδειγμα πανεπιστημιακών σπουδών : μελέτη περίπτωσης ενός διεπιστημονικού μεταπτυχιακού προγράμματος σπουδών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών / Interdisciplinarity at post-graduate level : an empirical survey of the interdisciplinary post-graduate program "Environmental studies"

Αγγελόπουλος, Γεώργιος 07 January 2009 (has links)
The concept of interdisciplinarity has gained prominence in general and specialized debates. This has been fuelling concerns that the Universities, which are dominated by disciplinary structures and courses, may be on the verge of changing some of their traditional relevance. Greek universities trying to respond to this challenge have adopted interdisciplinary programs at graduate and post-graduate level. Indeed, currently Greek Universities offer almost 150 intedisciplinary post-graduate programs. By investigating the interdisciplinary post-graduate program “Environmental Studies” at University of Patras, the purpose of this study is to describe the function of this program. We investigate it from a neo-institutional theory perspective in terms of the alignment of the cognitive, normative and regulative structures of the University that provide stability to social behavior. The study is based on a qualitative research method relying on semi-structured interviews with academics. The results indicate the difficulties applying the new University “paradigm”. It is important to understand the positive and the negative points of the experimentation, and realize a key point: the distance between the formal structure and informal practice.

TARPDISCIPLINIŠKUMAS ŠIUOLAIKINIAME LIETUVOS MENE: TEKSTILĖS JUNGTIS SU VIDEO / Interrpdisciplinarity in contemporary Lithuanian art: Interrelation of textile and video

Balčaitytė, Milita 05 August 2013 (has links)
The Mediator, the Negotiator, the Arbitrator or the Judge? Translation as Dispute Resolution

Hsieh, Hungpin Pierre 04 February 2014 (has links)
Metaphors have long shaped the way pure translation studies describe and justify the translation phenomenon by discovering and consolidating underlying principles. Ultimately, by means of metaphor, something that dwells on the interaction of two seemingly distinct things, translation theorists have obtained a better understanding of the category of translation. Human beings are gregarious, and disputes are inevitable in every society, ancient or modern, primitive or civilized. In fact, conflict is one iron law of life that mankind has had to improvise ways of resolving, from such formal ones as litigation to private ones such as self-help. We may not be able to eliminate dispute altogether, but we can, however, resolve it through creative and civilized means. Translation can be approached in a similar context, except it concerns a metaphorical dispute between cultures and/or languages—and probably on a more intangible and subtle platform. Disparate cultures, religions and languages in a clash can be brought closer to each other with skillful translation, and hence, translation is a variation of dispute resolution. That never went totally unnoticed. Over the years, countless translation metaphors have been constructed and exploited with very different results, which indicates how interdisciplinary a subject translation studies really is. Yet, apparently, translation is most often metaphorized as mediation and negotiation but rarely as arbitration or litigation, and one cannot but wonder whether this happened out of sheer coincidence or because of some misunderstanding. Thus, much as I appreciate what theorists have accomplished with translation metaphors, in regard to didactics and heuristics, my primitive observation is that translation theorists and practitioners have never made full use of metaphorization in that they might have had an incomplete idea of dispute resolution theory in general. After all, a metaphor is, ideally, meant to facilitate active learning and full integration of new knowledge, but there still remains a missing piece that is part and parcel of our metaphorization of translation. Specifically, translators have always embraced the amicable terms of negotiation and mediation, distancing themselves from non-mainstream ones such as arbitration and litigation. To that end, in my thesis, I will explore and examine translation through slightly renewed lenses, demonstrating how and why our metaphor schema and mapping should originate in dispute resolution, and why litigation, and perhaps even arbitration as dispute resolution mechanisms, would serve as good a metaphor—if not a better one—for translation. It is my resolute belief that the translator is more qualified as a judge, a respectable professional vested with immense judicial power, than as a mediator, who is but a third-party neutral facilitating dialogue between two disputants. Only in this way can metaphors do translation theory a great service by furnishing it with a renewed and objective description of translation.

Interdisziplinäre Spannungen durch Unschärfe – Herausforderungen für das Design

Margolus Zavala , Christian, Hirsch, Sandra 31 May 2018 (has links) (PDF)

Novo, Luciana Florentino January 2017 (has links)
The history of mankind is strongly intertwined to advances in the production of knowledge. In this environment, the 21st century takes place in a scenario, which have challenged the scientific communities; leading them to reflection about the model that drives modern science. In order to overcome such challenges, interdisciplinary perspective, directed at production of innovative knowledge, to feed the articulation of different looks. In this context, the University as a privileged locus of knowledge production has at its front policies that induce on new commitments; among them, joining the interdisciplinarity within the postgraduate, which has the National Plan of Postgraduate - NPOP 2011-2020 strength-inducing. This question involves institutional changes, since it touches on frames of reference which refer to disciplinary knowledge. It is in this context that the organizational culture enters the theme. This thesis aims to understand the central meanings of interdisciplinarity in research, built on the organizational culture of a public University. The focus of analysis privileges on the organizational values and social practices of research by the Graduate Program in Social Memory and Cultural Heritage - GPSMCH. It is a qualitative research, which is based on a case study (YIN, 2001). Thus, when, it was decided to carry out the reading of the organizational culture under three prisms: integration, differentiation and fragmentation (MARTIN, FROST, 2001). Data collection interviews to directors/managers, professor and students. The analysis was conducted in the light of the content analysis (BARDIN, 1979). Several aspects of organizational culture act as inhibitors to interdisciplinarity, the individualism, the dispersed structure, cooperation restricted to groups, the favorites and privileges. As inductors to interdisciplinarity has been recent values and practices. Such as democracy and equality of opportunity, has been materialized in the discussions as the main guidelines of the institution. Internal edicts to overcome the cronyism. Itinerant meetings and event integration have promoted the approach for dialogue. From such analysis, it was possible to see how meanings of interdisciplinarity in research on organizational culture from UFPel: lack of an institutional policy; individual initiatives lead to postgraduate; difficulty of interaction and collective construction, interdisciplinarity impaired by individualism; titration imposing limits; lack of a vision of collective; lack of team spirit and collective construction practices, as well as institutional advances (integration). Common meanings just within specific groups (differentiation): challenge (professors), freedom and responsibility for operationalizing (professors), IDP as (managers) interdisciplinarity hindered by administrative matters (professors), uncertainty conferred by title (students); step posgraduate school discipline (students); researcher "least owner of knowledge" (professors); prejudice (students). And, how shared meanings between individuals temporarily (fragmentation): freedom of membership (managers and professors); Interdisciplinarity needs a deep disciplinarity (professors and students); silencing by the UFPel (managers and professors); cooperation restricted to ghettos (managers and professors); hampered from the time factor (professors and students). With this work was to contribute a gap with regard to studies related to interdisciplinarity by the postgraduate school, in particular, to adopt a reading under the prism of organizational culture - key differentiator of this thesis, which seeks to make up for the lack of studies and research in national and international scope.
