Nonlinear Isoviscous Behaviour of Compliant Journal BearingsCha, Matthew January 2012 (has links)
Plans to shut down nuclear power plants in some European countries as well as increased electricity production by wind and solar power will increase the work load on hydroelectric power plants in the future. Also, due to the power grid regulations, hydroelectric power plants undergo more frequent start-ups and shut-downs. During such transient periods, a large amplitude shaft motion can occur, especially in the power plants with vertical shafts. Large shaft motion is not desirable because it can lead to a machine failure. Furthermore, performance limitations of conventional white metal or babbitted bearings call for the development of new bearing designs. An outstanding tribological performance can be achieved by introducing compliant polymer liners. At the same time, bearings with compliant liners may alter rotor-bearing system dynamic behaviour compared to the systems with conventional white metal bearings. The research approach of this thesis is to employ nonlinear analysis to provide further understanding of the compliant bearing dynamic response to synchronous shaft excitation. Plain cylindrical journal bearings with different compliant liner thicknesses were analysed using a nonlinear approach. The numerical model was verified with an in-house developed code at steady state conditions. Results obtained by the numerical models showed good agreement. After verification of the numerical model for fixed geometry journal bearings, models for tilting pad journal bearings were developed. Results for the tilting pad journal bearing with three pads with line pivot geometry were compared with published data in dynamic conditions. A good agreement was obtained between the two numerical models. The effect of pad pivot geometry on bearing dynamic response was investigated. Vertical and horizontal shaft configurations were compared in terms of the effect of preload factor, pivot offset, tapers and pad inclination angles. Influence of the viscoelastic properties of compliant liners was also studied. All these factors significantly affect bearing dynamic response. It is shown how these factors should be selected to control the journal orbit sizes. It was also shown that the compliant liner provides lower maximum oil film pressure and thicker minimum oil film thickness in the bearing mid-plane in both static and dynamic operating conditions. / <p>QC 20120319</p> / Swedish Hydropower Centre

Exploring Dialogue Journals as a Context for Connecting with and Supporting the Emotional Lives of Fourth GradersJohnson, Samantha Simone 11 December 2020 (has links)
About 20 percent of school-aged children, 18 years and younger, struggle with mental health issues in America today. Mental health issues lead to greater rates of suicide, depression, loneliness, anxiety, and bullying that takes place in and out of schools. This exploratory multiple case study looks at how 10 fourth graders, five male and five female, use a weekly entry in a dialogue journal letter to their teacher to share their emotional lives. I explore how a dialogue journal can open up a space between students and teachers for emotional aspects of life and learning to be included in schools. This study specifically explores what children say about their lives and feelings in a dialogue journal across a period of a school year. I also inquire into changes in a period of crisis teaching when a worldwide pandemic closes down school and children are forced into distance learning in their homes. We find that 1) students can share feelings, ideas and parts of themselves with me in a dialogue journal that they don't share in class, 2) the journal provides a space for them to elaborate upon and become more aware of their feelings, 3) students seek to have a personal connection with their teacher, 4) students have comments and feedback about what is happening in the classroom, and 5) the student's entries affected my immediate practices as a teacher and added insights and ideas for future practices on how I could have been even more supportive to the students.

Patienter som förts till närakut : en deskriptiv studie / Patients admitted to walk-in centres : a descriptive studySegerblad, Fredrik January 2016 (has links)
In recent years, regional guidelines have implemented to provide patients’ cared for by Emergency Medical Services [EMS] care alternatives to the traditional transport to the closest hospital. The purpose for this is to provide the most appropriate level of care based on the patients’ needs. Since 2013, these guidelines have been tested on a project basis in a region in Sweden. Providing that certain criteria are met, the ambulance specialist nurse, in agreement with the patient, is able to offer the patient an adequate level of care, often with a quicker admittance at four walk-in centers in the region, During 2013, 566 patients have been brought by EMS to these walk-in centers, according to the EMS journal system. The purpose was to describe the patient that has been brought to walk-in centers by the EMS and describe the management process. The study was a retrospective journal review where results were presented by descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate differences among patient demographics concerning gender, as well as differences in priority set by emergency dispatch and severity of the patients’ condition according to the EMS. Furthermore, the EMS was shown to deviate from the criteria that the regulatory guidelines were founded on. The study gives insight to a relatively new patient group, illustrating variations in demographic data as well as reasons contact with the EMS. There were differences concerning equality between genders, both from emergency dispatch as well as the EMS. The cause for these differences requires further research. The guidelines providing the basis for this new approach were not followed to the full extent, motivating further research into the content of these guidelines, as well as attitudes of the EMS personnel.
