Profiles of the Forms and Functions of Aggression and Psychosocial Outcomes in Two Distinct Juvenile Offender Populations

Thompson, Kelli R 13 May 2016 (has links)
The current study was designed to explore profiles of reactive and proactive aggression in two distinct juvenile offender populations, in a group of juvenile offenders who have been adjudicated for illegal sexual behavior (n = 138) and in a group of juvenile offenders adjudicated for general delinquent behavior (n = 243). This is the first study of its kind to investigate profiles of aggression in a population of juveniles adjudicated for illegal sexual behavior. Preliminary profile analyses indicated that the two juvenile offender populations had similar profiles of aggression overall. Two step cluster analysis results were generally consistent with previous research (Crapanzano, Frick, & Terranova, 2010; Marsee et al., 2014) with 3 groups emerging for both overt and relational aggression: a combined group high on both reactive and proactive aggression, a group high in reactive aggression alone, and a low overall group. Post hoc comparisons of the clusters revealed that the high combined group consistently demonstrated higher reports of emotional and behavioral dysfunction supporting the hypothesis that the presence of proactive aggression serves more as an indicator of severity rather than as representing a qualitatively distinct group in and of itself. Policy implications regarding sex offender registration and notification laws extended to juveniles are discussed.

Rehabilitation for Gang-Affiliated, Male, African American Juvenile Delinquents

Berger, Batsheva 01 January 2019 (has links)
Many social workers are unaware of their responsibilities related to African American, male, juvenile delinquents who have gang affiliation. Punishment by detention is detrimental to these youth because detention perpetuates criminal careers and does not rehabilitate juvenile offenders. The purpose of this action research study was to determine how social workers understood their role in the rehabilitation of gang-affiliated, African American, male juvenile delinquents. Differential association theory was used as the conceptual framework to understand the detriment of youth being incarcerated without rehabilitation. One focus group of 5 social workers was formed using purposive sampling of social workers who worked with the juvenile delinquent population in different settings. Manual transcription, hand coding, and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. Participants explained why social workers see the population of African American, male, juvenile delinquents with gang involvement as vulnerable, reasons for gang affiliation, barriers to treatment, and how to engage this population. Findings include strategies to promote positivity within urban environments, foster a sense community in these areas, and engage clients. Recommendations were made to advocate for policy change, incorporate the arts into intervention, and to create urban beautification programs. Findings and recommendations from this study might bring about social change by providing insight into how social workers understand their role in the rehabilitation of the population of African American, male, juvenile delinquents with gang involvement and what can be done to enhance the social work involvement.

A Comparison of Scores Made on the MMPI and CTMM by Two Groups of Juvenile Delinquents Apprehended for Auto Theft and a Group of Non-Delinquents

Sypert, Walter Charles 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine if juvenile delinquents who commit auto theft without an accomplice differ significantly in certain characteristics from those who commit such thefts with one of more confederates. The characteristics investigated were: (1) scores made on individual scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and (2) intellectual ability as measured by the California Short-Form Test of Mental Maturity. Furthermore, the same characteristics were examined to determine if a significant difference existed between each of the groups of juvenile delinquents and a group of juveniles who did not have a record of delinquency and attended Sunday School classes regularly.

La spécialisation de la justice des mineurs est-elle toujours effective? / Is specialization of youth justice still effective?

Dubergé, Nicolas 29 November 2018 (has links)
The child is a person at a development stage, vulnerable who must be protected. To complete this objective, the legislator chosen to build with 1945 February 2nd and 1958 December 23th ordinaries, a specialized justice system able to assure the safety of child at risk and educate juvenile delinquent In a law in perpetual movement, the objective of this research is to measure the contemporary influence of the specialized marker irrigating the construction of our juvenile justice system, both on plan of the jurisdictional organization and the procedure followed by all the jurisdictions The recent transformations of the French juvenile law and the evolution of various European systems of justice demonstrate it, the future of this mark is threatened because the wellfare model in which it expresses itself is in crisis. It undergoes the competition of one new paradigm which is trying to give more responsibilities to the child: the managerial justice. Aware of this reality, this one recently began a restoration which is again necessary to complete.

A quantitative study on the culture of violence amongst learners in South African schools

Van der Merwe, Nicola 04 1900 (has links)
The focus of this thesis falls on school violence. The research addresses the possibility that a culture of violence exists amongst some South African school-going youth. The researcher identified the attitudes and behaviour of learners towards violence as indicators of the culture of these learners. The research specifically focused on the pro-violence attitudes and violent behaviour of learners. The definition of ‘culture’ which was employed suggests the link between a person’s attitude, behaviour and culture. Information was gathered through literature and empirical research. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire with closed-ended questions and a well-tested tool, namely the Attitudes towards Violence Scale. The results of the empirical research were analyzed with the SPSS Windows data editor computer program. Conclusions and recommendations regarding school violence were made. In addition, a programme to curb such violence was proposed. Some suggestions for further research into this subject were also advanced. / Criminology and Security Science / M.A. (Criminology)

Critérios judiciais de aplicação das medidas socioeducativas

Cabezas, Beatriz de Souza 28 May 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T20:27:15Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Beatriz de Souza Cabezas.pdf: 803647 bytes, checksum: 85f05d629b166959e8a55f413dbe6496 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-28 / This paper outlines judicial criteria related to social and educational judicial measures and analyses their similarities and differences in relation to criminal penalties. As a consequence, both constitutional rules and legal rules other than those within the Constitution have been studied, ranging from the so-called Ordenações Filipinas up to the Children and Adolescents Act; Brazilian jurisprudence of the past 10 years as well as the way Criminal Law relates to this paper s theme. The results attained demonstrate that (1) there is juvenile criminal liability with specific characteristics and a particular set of principles; (2) non-recognition of such juvenile criminal liability hinders the access and permanence of teenagers in the system of legal guarantees and prevents materialization and onset of public policies; (3) both the under ageoriented judicial way of thinking among Brazilian judges and their inclination towards punishment gives rise to legally arbitrary social and educational measures, based on judges personal views and their particular understanding of the Law, which, in turn, produces judicial decisions without any relation to their main goal, that is to say, teenagers pedagogical needs; (4) lack of infrastructure for the execution of social and educational judicial measures in Brazilian cities is also a contributing factor which leads to non-compliance to legal criteria whenever such measures are adopted; (5) interpretation and effectiveness of the Children and Adolescents Act currently face challenges that need to be overcome, be it through judges changing their mentality, be it through the creation of new structures that enable social and educational measures, in order to establish teenagers as legal subjects in a peculiar state of development / A presente dissertação teve por objetivo estabelecer os critérios judiciais de aplicação das medidas socioeducativas, analisando as peculiaridades e diferenciações destes com relação às penas.
