O Ver Poético: Arnaldo Antunes e Eduardo Kac / The Poetic Seeing: Arnaldo Antunes e Eduardo Kac

MARTINS, Patrícia Ferreira da Silva 23 April 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T16:29:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Patricia Ferreira da Silva Martins1.pdf: 8275051 bytes, checksum: 771d7defb137f5b27695b645dcf5f56f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-04-23 / This thesis, developed within the research line Modern Poetics, aims at providing a critical and analytical reading of the experimental poetry by Arnaldo Antunes and Eduardo Kac, focusing on the practices that emphasize, above all, the relations between poetic experimentation, visuality and technology. In this sense, we present a reflection that develops among the border of literature, art and science. The work also presents a general notion of what can be called digital poetry and cyberpoetry, emphasizing the poetic works, within these inter-related practices, that have been produced in Brazil and in the world. This field imposes upon us a theoretical discussion that develops around the way of approaching the computational poetry and, consequently, around the questions related to interface and interactivity and the shifts within the system author-work-reception. In order to do that, our theoretical discussion is articulated around Jorge Luiz Antonio s and Christopher Funkhouser s reflections about the electronic and digital poetry. We also count with the aesthetic proposals of Suzete Venturelli, Anne Cauquelin and Claudia Giannetti. From these readings, we establish an approach to deal with this poetic form. This approach, as an open process of negotiation, emphasizes the link observer-work that aligns with the concepts of interface and interactivity. It is intended to investigate, with this work, elements as the vitality of the experimental technological poetic production of both poets in reveling tensions in our time, exploiting the limits of subjectivity before the new means and collaborating to the humanization of technologies.

"Abstract" homomorphisms of split Kac-Moody groups

Caprace, Pierre-Emmanuel 20 December 2005 (has links)

Charignon, Cyril 02 July 2010 (has links)
This work aims at generalizing Bruhat-Tits theory to Kac-Moody groups over local fields. We thus try to construct a geometric space on wich such a group will act, and wich will look like the Bruhat-Tits building of a reductive group. Actually, the first part stays in the field of Bruhat-Tits theory as it exposes a family of compactification of an ordinary affine building. It is in the second part that we move to Kac-Moody theory, using the first part as a guide. The spaces obtained do not satisfy all the requirement for a building, they will be called (bounded) hovels (”masures” in french).

Eduardo Kac: uma poética da criação / Eduardo Kac: a poetic of creation

Covas, Iara Maia 25 September 2009 (has links)
This dissertation approaches the poetics of the multimedia artist Eduardo Kac, internationally known for his innovative and controversial works and for his performance as a professor, critic and researcher of contemporary artistic modalities that involve the use of new technologies, including some that were developed by himself, such as the holopoetry, the telepresence and biotelematic art and the transgenic art. We consider that the idea of creation in his works, mainly the relationship between this creation and a mystical conception of language, is based on concepts and techniques of the Jewish Kabbalah. By analyzing the transgenic art works that compose the Creation Trilogy: Genesis (1999), GFPBunny (2000) e The Eighth Day (2001), we intend to highlight the references and creative procedures that connect the ancient and traditional structure of knowledge (the Kabbalah) with the analysis of creation and its relationship with language in the kabbalistic tradition and contemporary art.

Hidden symmetries and black holes in supergravity / Symétries cachées et trous noirs en supergravité

Jamsin, Ella 26 May 2010 (has links)
Upon dimensional reduction, certain supergravity theories exhibit symmetries otherwise undetected, called hidden symmetries. Not only do these symmetries teach us about the structure of the corresponding theories but moreover they provide methods to construct black hole solutions.

In this thesis, we study the hidden symmetries of supergravity theories of particular interest and how these help constructing black hole solutions in dimensions D>4. We focus on three representative cases that are the symmetries appearing upon dimensional reduction to three, two and one dimensions. They are respectively described by finite, affine and hyperbolic algebras. In the first two cases, we develop and apply solution generating techniques.

The first part of this thesis introduces the background concepts. We start with an introduction to black holes and other black objects in dimensions D>4. We present their subtleties, the known solutions and the conjectured ones. We insist on stationary axisymmetric solutions of vacuum and to the corresponding solution generating technique.

The next chapter gives an introduction to Kac-Moody algebras. These indeed play a central role in this thesis as the symmetries appearing in three, two and one dimensions are described by three types of Kac-Moody algebras called respectively finite, affine and hyperbolic.

In the second part, we first review the notion of dimensional reductions and how the hidden symmetries can be uncovered. The rest of the thesis contains three applications of these hidden symmetries.

The first two concern five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Upon dimensional reduction to three dimensions, this theory exhibits a symmetry under the exceptional finite Kac-Moody algebra g2. This 14-dimensional algebra is the smallest exceptional finite Kac-Moody algebra. We use this duality to generate solutions while focussing mainly on black strings.

After reduction to two dimensions, the symmetry becomes infinite-dimensional and is described by the affine extension of g2. Moreover, the two-dimensional theory is integrable, which allows us to develop another type of solution generating technique, hitherto applied only to vacuum gravity. In this work we generalize it to a case with matter fields.

Finally, the notion of dimensional reduction to one dimension provides the necessary intuition for the conjecture of an algebraic formulation of M-theory, candidate to the unification of all interactions, based on the hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra e10. In the last chapter of this thesis, we study an aspect of this correspondence, namely the e10 symmetry of massive type IIA supergravity in ten dimensions.

/

Kac-Moody Algebras in M-theory / Kac-Moody algebras in M-theory

De Buyl, Sophie 16 June 2006 (has links)

The behaviours of fluid characterforms in temporal typography

Brownie, Barbara Kay January 2012 (has links)
This thesis identifies and characterises a particular kind of temporal typography in which verbal forms exhibit behaviours that have been identified by Eduardo Kac as ‘fluid’ , and fluctuate between the verbal and pictorial or abstract. A typology will be constructed which identifies the various behaviours by which fluidity is exhibited, and provides terminology for their analysis, accompanied by analysis of how these behaviours address the relationship between the commonly distinct paradigms of verbal and pictorial signs. The work identifies the distinction between fluidity and other forms of kineticism, and explores the various behaviours exhibited in fluid artefacts. When addressing local kineticism, gaps in existing research are filled by employing terms and observations from other fields. For example, Kac offers the term ‘fluid’ in description of his holographic poetry, which exhibits behaviours much like those presented in some examples of screenbased temporal typography. This thesis proposes that Kac’s term, ‘fluid’, may be adopted in order to differentiate significant local change in verbal forms from the various other kinds of kineticism observable in temporal typography. Fluid behaviours are identified in examples including Martin Lambie Nairn and MPC’s Channel 4 idents, the credit sequences of Kyle Cooper, and the typographic animations of practitioners including Komnios Zervos and Dan Waber. This thesis demonstrates that the existing discourse surrounding temporal typography has been held back by a failure to make distinguish between global kineticism (effecting layout) and local kineticism (effecting individual characters). The distinction between the global and the local is considered vital in studies of perceptual organisation, particularly Gestalt psychology. By providing a coherent typology, and consistent terminology, this study has the potential to positively influence understanding and analysis of fluid characterforms.

Identified as a part of biopoetry (the field that describes any work that uses biotechnology as a mean to create poetry as living beings), the biopoem is the interdisciplinary object of this research, which assembles distincts fields such as arts, communication, biology and poetry. Our goal is to investigate how mutation contributes to the organizing thinking of the text, identifying it in biology, in its relation to life, and to poetry, and its constitution in what we name as poetics of deviation. Keeping in touch with a variety of fields of thought, we grapple the text through the approach of extremes as described by Christine Mello. This paper is located within the area of Aesthetics of Communication, on the context of technological poetics, bioarts and transgenic arts. Its theoretical grounds are based on the writings of Arlindo Machado and Priscila Arantes, as well as on the writings of the foreign thinkers Christine Paul and Stephen Wilson. Our reading of the poetics of deviation takes into account the ideas of Brian Massumi, Manfred Eigen and Francis Crick, while also considering the poetry of E.M. Melo de Castro, Roman Jakobson and Haroldo de Campos. The work of Vilém Flusser on poetry and biotechnology is a key figure to produce the encounter between such areas. Through our reading of the texts, while considering the advances in genetics and the manipulation of life in its elementary stage, our paper proposes deviation as a vitality force, enabling a rescue of biology as belonging to poetry. In our lecture, the biopoem is the result of distinct mutations, what we call poetics of deviation. The ideia of Eduardo Kac’s poetry articulates the language deconstruction, and also, a certain liberation of the body as life experience, like he says: “always between the crass and the trash”, therefore, the liberation and scientism / Este trabalho se constitui a partir de uma leitura crítica da obra Gênesis (1999) de Eduardo Kac.
