Avaliação de novos tratamentos preventivos da erosão e abrasão do esmalte e da dentina / Evaluation of new preventive treatments for erosion and abrasion of enamel and dentinCintia Maria de Souza e Silva 26 July 2013 (has links)
This study, conducted in the form of two subprojects, evaluated: 1) the preventive potential of hydroxyapatite-based (calcium phosphate nanoparticles) pastes on erosion and abrasion of bovine enamel and dentin in vitro e in situ and 2) the effect of rinsing with a solution of calcium lactate before brushing with fluoride toothpaste on erosion associated or not with abrasion of bovine enamel and dentin in vitro e in situ. In the in vitro phase of the 1st subproject, bovine enamel and dentin blocks were submitted to erosion (coca-cola, pH 2.6, 4x/day, 90s each) + abrasion (electric toothbrush + fluoride-free toothpaste slurry, 10s each, 2x/day) for 5 days. Treatments were performed after abrasion, by applying the following pastes on the blocks (3 min, 2x/day): 10% HAP, 10% HAP + 0.2% NaF, 20% HAP, 20% HAP + 0.2% NaF, 20% HAP + 2% NaF, placebo, 0.2% NaF, 2% NaF, MI paste, MI paste plus and control. In the in situ phase (4 phases, 5 days each), 12 volunteers used intraoral palatal appliance containing four blocks of dentin and four blocks enamel divided into conditions erosion and erosion+abrasion. In each phase, treatment was done with one of the following pastes: 10% HAP, 10% HAP + 0.2% NaF, MI paste plus or Placebo. The erosive and abrasive protocol was similar to the in vitro phase. In the 2nd subproject, the in vitro phase was similar to subproject 1, but presented both conditions erosion and erosion + abrasion. The study included the following treatments: BCa + DF, BCa + DP, BP + DF e BP + DP. After erosion, the blocks were immersed in deionized water (BP) or calcium lactate solution 150 mM (BCa; 1 min, stirring). For the condition erosion only, the slurry of fluoride (DF) or placebo (DP) dentifrice was pipetted on the samples. The in situ phase was similar to the in vitro experiment, but 15 volunteers were included and brushing was conducted for 15 s. The response variable for the two subprojects was wear, evaluated by profilometry (μm). For the in situ phase of the 1st subproject, SEM-EDS was also performed. Data were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey, Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn or two-way ANOVA/Bonferroni tests (p <0.05). In vitro , for enamel, 10 and 20% hydroxyapatitebased pastes, regardless the presence of F, were effective in preventing erosion associated with abrasion. For dentin, the protective effect was found only for Fcontaining paste and the effect was higher for those with higher F concentration. In situ, only pastes containing 10% HAP were effective in reducing enamel erosion as compared to the placebo paste. For the other tested conditions, none of the pastes used significantly differed from placebo. For the second subproject, the BCa + DF had a protective effect only for enamel and dentin erosion in vitro . For erosion associated with abrasion in vitro , as well as for the in situ study, no significant differences were detected among the treatments.

An experimental study on the alterability of basalts from Três Irmãos Hydroelectric Dam foundation was performed by means of alteration test, and \"Los Angeles\" abrasion tests carried out after the samples have been submitted to alteration test. L.A. test was adopted as a mechanical parameter in order to quantify the disaggregation. Grain size analyses were also used as a complementary quantification form. Additionally, some physico-mechanical standard tests and petrographical analyses were done for the technological characterization of the various samples. The distribution of values of mass loss due to alteration and abrasion, with the time (cicles), and the grain size distribution presented, after those tests, allowed the evaluation of disaggregation of the studied samples. Several criteria of calculations, as suggested by different authors, were used to define alterability indexes. The indexes adopted allowed to evaluate properly the alterability of the studied basaltic rocks. The results here obtained provided conditions to stablish a proposition of a standard procedure to evaluate rock alterability through experimental tests.

Engineering nanomaterials (ENM) like metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, etc. possess various innovative properties and their industrial use creates new opportunities. However, they also present new risks and uncertainties. There is an ever growing production and use of the products containing these ENM, like nanocomposites or nanocoatings, which result in an increasing number of workers and consumers exposed to ENM upon their emission (in the form of aerosols) from the products containing them. One of the most favored approaches, to minimize this emission, would be a preventive one which would focus on altering the product’s material properties during its design phase itself without compromising with any of its added benefits. This thesis advocates this approach. It attempts to understand the ENM emission phenomenon and its yielding mechanisms on the basis of combined experimental and theoretical approaches. The experimental set-up, developed during this thesis, is equipped with the necessary elements which can (i) seek to reproduce the real life activities on a laboratory scale (ii) identify the emission mechanism (iii) carry out both qualitative as well as quantitative*analysis of the emitted ENM simultaneously. Whilst the mean chosen for applying the mechanical solicitation or stress is an abrasion process, for the environmental weathering, it is an accelerated UV exposure process in the presence of humidity and heat. The results suggest that depending upon 18 material and process properties/parameters, the microscopic entities present on the surface of a product, called asperities, undergo mainly 4 types of removal mechanisms during abrasion. It is these mechanisms that decide the shape, size and the number of the aerosol particles emitted. Moreover, for the given test samples and experimental conditions studied during the thesis, application of the mechanical stresses alone was found to generate the emitted ENM aerosols in which ENM is always embedded inside the product matrix, thus, a representative product element. In such a case, the emitted aerosols comprise of both nanoparticles as well as microparticles. But if the mechanical stresses are coupled with the environmental weathering, then the eventual deterioration of the product, after a certain weathering duration, may lead to the emission of the free ENM aerosols too. All these experimental findings, pertaining to the effect of the mechanical stresses alone, have also been put into the perspective with classical material and mechanics state laws using a predictive analytical model. A close agreement** of the estimated results of this model with the experimentally measured ones has validated its functioning. This model was used to perform a sensitivity analysis on the aforementioned 18 parameters to rank the influence of a25% variation in each of their values on the particle emission for the given conditions. Thus, during the present thesis, both experimental and theoretical approaches have been developed to study the emission. Despite the fact that these approaches are perfectible, they can still be used during product design phase for the product to be “nanosafe by design”.

Análise das propriedades mecânicas de uma resina composta à base de silorano / Analysis of the mechanical properties of a silorane based compositeEloá de Aguiar Gazola 04 June 2014 (has links)
This study investigated the mechanical properties of the silorane based composite in two chapter. Chapter A Aim: evaluated the bond strength between the dental structure and a silorane-based composite (SC), after bleaching treatment. Method: Sixty bovine incisors were randomly distributed into six groups (n=10) according to the storage period between the bleaching treatment and the SC restoration. The bleaching treatment followed a protocol of 10% carbamide peroxide with one application during four hours per day during two weeks. After the period of storage, cavities were made and filled with SC. Results: After the periods of bleaching treatment, no significant difference was observed in the results of push out bond strength between the SC and the bleached substrate (p>0.05). Conclusion: the bond strength between the SC and the dental substrate was not affected by the bleaching treatment with 10% carbamide peroxide. Chapter B Aim: evaluated the bond strength between incremental layers of methacrylate and silorane composites and the micro hardness Knoop (KHN) after erosion and abrasion cycles. Method: for the bond strength, twenty samples were made with each composite, methacrylate (MC) and silorane (SC) (n=10). The samples were divided into four groups according composite type and quantity of increments. The microtensile test was performed 24 h after the samples were made. For the KHN test, after erosion/abrasion process, forty samples of each composite tested (MC and SC) were made. The samples were distributed into eight groups (n=10) according composite type and beverage type involved in the erosion process (control, orange juice, Smirnoff Ice and Gatorade) and abrasion with high abrasivity detifrice. Results: no differences were observed in the bond strength between increment layers when the same composite was analyzed (p>0.05). The results of KHN in the MC groups showed smaller value for the Smirnoff Ice (p<0.05), however for the SC groups no differences were found (p>0.05). Conclusion: the bond strength between incremental layers of SC was not affected by the oxygen; the others beverages, jointly with the abrasion, have no capacity to interfere in the KHN of the composites tested.

Saponin Removal from Quinoa by Abrasion ProcessingLundberg, Luke 01 June 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Quinoa is coated with a thin layer of saponins, glycosylated triterpenoids, that produce a bitter flavor when consumed. The average saponin content in commercial varietals from Bolivia average around 2.7% saponins and organoleptic testing shows the threshold for noticing a bitter flavor is below 0.12% (Medina-Meza et al., 2016). Current industrial processing methods use a combination of abrasion and turbulent water flow to remove saponin. This study will address the following research question: How will grain-to-grain and grain-to-surface abrasion affect the processing time to remove saponin from quinoa? In particular, can effective saponin removal be achieved in less than 10 minutes without washing with water?
Three different laboratory scale systems for generating grain-to-grain abrasion alone and in combination with grain-to-surface abrasion were constructed. Preliminary studies using mass balance and visual observation found the tubular system removed 4.45% of the quinoa mass in saponin containing fractions compared to the conical system (1.33%) and fluidized bed (0.62%).
After preliminary studies, a saponin estimation method was adapted and the conditions of the tubular system were determined. A randomized experiment was carried out in triplicate at three levels of time (5, 10, and 15 minutes) and mass (200, 300, and 400 grams). The effect of surface roughness in the tubular system was also evaluated. The samples were collected and saponin content in each sample was quantified using the adapted method. The saponin levels were compared to commercially processed quinoa in the market.
The processing conditions of 15 minutes at an input mass of 300 grams yielded the lowest saponin level of 0.19%. The four processing conditions of (10 minutes/200 grams, 10 minutes/400 grams, 15 minutes/200 grams and 15 minutes/300 grams) were statistically different (p
The tubular system showed promise for reducing process time and saponin content in commercially processed quinoa without washing. However, further experimentation is needed for industrial implementation. The system would provide the industry with a sustainable process with better saponin removal capacity.

Many factors affect oral health, including diet. Resistência de união à dentina erodida e erodido-abrasionada em função da aplicação de clorexidina para controle do desgaste / Bond strength to eroded and eroded-abraded dentin depending on the application of chlorhexidine for the control of tooth wearLiberatti, Giovanni Aguirra 04 February 2019 (has links)
The establishment of adhesive interfaces on artificially eroded dentin substrate, conceptually poor in minerals, coated with an exposed organic matrix, is little promising. For the time being, only diamond bur surface roughening and deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite, when universal adhesives are used, make it similar to the obtained for normal/sound dentin. Maintaining the layer of collagen fibrils, using protease inhibitors, perhaps even when compressed by abrasion, may, however, be convenient, since it plays an important role in the demineralization and remineralization processes, including the erosive and erosive-abrasive wear progression, and in establishing a hybrid layer itself. The aim of this study was to evaluate, immediately, bond strength (BS) of an etch-and-rinse adhesive system plus a composite to dentin, considering the condition of its substrate in three levels (N: normal; E: eroded; EA: eroded-abraded), and the application of a gel for the prevention/control of the erosive wear in three levels (C: control / without application, P: placebo / without an active principle, and CHX: 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate). To determine the normal substrate, occlusal dentin from third molars was subjected solely to the action of a SiC sandpaper (# 600; 1 min; N); to determine the eroded and eroded-abraded, it was sequentially, and readily, subjected to an initial erosive challenge (Coca-Cola®, 5 min). One of the gels were applied, or not (control / without application), on it: placebo / without active principle; or containing 0.12% CHX. The initial demineralized one was still submitted to a pH cycling (Coca-Cola®, immersions of 5 min, 3x /day, 5 days), determining the eroded substrate (E), or to the pH cycling associated to brushing (electric toothbrush/fluoride toothpaste diluted in water, 2.5 N, 30 s, 2x/day, after 1st and last acid challenges), determining the eroded-abraded substrate (EA). After acid-etching (37% H3PO4, 15 sec, 30 sec washing, drying with absorbent paper), Adper(TM) Single Bond 2® adhesive was applied to all specimens and resin composite buildups constructed with Filtek(TM)Z350®. After 24 h (distilled water / 37?C), specimens were sectioned in beams and tested (?TBS, 0.5 mm/min). BS values obtained were organized considering each tooth as an experimental unit and a twoway ANOVA and Tukey test, applied (?=0.05). An extra tooth for each group was treated exactly like the others, but rhodamine B fluorescent dye was previously added (0.16 mg / mL) to the adhesive system to allow qualitative evaluation of the adhesive interface by means of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy. Differently from the variable application of gels for prevention/control of erosive wear (p=0.359), the condition of the dentin substrate had a significant influence on the results (p<0.001). In addition, there was no interaction between them (p=0.856). Immediate BS values to eroded and eroded-abraded substrates, equivalent to each other, were always lower than that to the sound substrate, regardless of the application, or not, of the CHX or the placebo gel for prevention/control of erosive wear. Concerning the fracture pattern of the tested beams, adhesive and mixed failures were predominant in relation to the cohesive, regardless of whether in dentin or in resin composite. As for the qualitative analysis, it is noticed that resinous tags are manifested in greater number and length in the substrates submitted to erosive initial challenge, that is, eroded and erodedabraded substrates, regardless of the application of any strategy to control progression of wear. Among them, for the eroded substrate, there is an identifiable dark layer underlying that of the adhesive itself, among the resin tags, representing the lowest concentration of material marked by rhodamine B. For the eroded-abraded substrate, hybrid layer is duly expressed by a red blur underlying the layer of adhesive, more and less thick than that established in the normal and eroded substrates, respectively. Therefore, it is concluded that the CHX gel was not able to determine, while preserving/controlling the erosive or erosive-abrasive wear, a substrate as favorable to bonding with resinous materials as a sound one, even if it has not impaired it even more.
