Varying rumen available carbohydrate and rumen available protein in diets of lactating cattle

Garrett, Jennifer L. 06 June 2008 (has links)
Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of varying dietary sources of rumen available carbohydrate (RAC) and rumen available protein (RAP) on milk yield and milk composition, nutrient flow to the duodenum, ruminal and total tract nutrient digestibilities, and ruminal pH, ammonia-N, and VFA concentrations in lactating cows. The first study was a response surface design utilizing nine dietary combinations of RAC and RAP. The response surfaces of all milk variables were saddle-shaped. Because of the saddle-shaped surfaces, an optimum combination of RAP and RAC for milk production variables was not obvious from the limited range of RAC and RAP used in this study. Ridge analysis of the saddle surfaces predicted maximum milk yield when dietary RAC was below 69 % of the DM and RAP below 60% of CP in alfalfa-corn silage based diets. In the second study, four cannulated (ruminal and duodenal) cows were utilized in a 4x4 Latin square design. Four of the nine original diets were selected to provide the largest range of RAC and RAP. Nutrient flow, digestiblities and ruminal parameters were evaluated. Although the in situ incubations indicated that rates of DM, CP, and NDF degradabilities differed among diets, no effects on overall ruminal pH and total VFA concentrations were detected. Additionally, DM, OM, NDF, ADF, and N flows to the duodenum were not affected by dietary treatment. Nonmicrobial N flow was greater for the barley-based diet, yet microbial flow was not different. The differences in rates of availability determined by in situ methods were not large enough to illicit a measurable difference in nutrient digestion and utilization. Additionally, the data implied that none of the diets were limiting in RAC and RAP for vigorous microbial activity. Fat-corrected (3.5%) milk production was greatest (P<.05) when alfalfa-corn silage based diets contained supplements providing intermediate (69 % RAe) carbohydrate availability (corn and barley) and low (60 % RAP) ruminal protein availability (BM and SBM). The increase in fat-corrected milk was consistent with the predicted milk production response in the previous study when RAP exceeded 62% of CP. However, the ruminal parameters, nutrient flow, and nutrient digestibility measurements did not adequately explain the increased milk production when diets contained increased concentrations of BM. / Ph. Partitioning of nitrogen by lactating cows fed diets varying in nonfibrous carbohydrate and rumen undegradable protein

Fisher, Russ James 04 October 2006 (has links)
Four multiparous Holstein cows, averaging 44 days in milk and previously fitted with rumina1 and duodenal cannulae, were utilized in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to evaluate effects of dietary nonfibrous carbohydrate (NFC) and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) on metabolic and lactational parameters. Diets were isonitrogenous (17.4% CP) and structured in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with levels of NFC at 41 or 47% of dietary OM and RUP at 27 or 41% of dietary CP with inclusion of corn gluten meal, fish meal, and feather meal to increase dietary RUP. When cows were fed diets containing 47% NFC, intake of DM, OM, NFC, and N increased (P ± .05) while those containing 41 % NFC increased (P±.01) intake of NDF and ADF. Ruminal digestibility coefficients were not affected leading to greater quantities of NFC digested resulting in suppressed pH (P ±.01) and acetate (P ±.05) and increased propionate (P ± .05), Diets containing 27% RUP increased (P ±.01) ruminal ammonia and plasma urea nitrogen (N) with 41 % NFC eliciting higher ammonia N concentrations at each RUP level. Bacterial yields (averaging 220 g/d) were slightly higher when 41% NFC diets were consumed with no dietary effects on efficiency. Flow of ammonia N to the small intestine (SI) increased (P ± .01) with 27% RUP. When compared to 41% NFC, diets containing 47% NFC increased (P ± .05) flow of methionine (38.6 vs. 32.5 g/d). Fifty percent of the essential amino acids entering the SI were of bacterial origin. Diets containing 41% RUP elicited lower total tract digestion of N while enhancing that of hemicellulose. Total tract digestion of NFC and ADF was greater when 41% NFC diets were consumed. Yields of milk (38.7 vs. 37.7 kg/d) and lactose (1.94 vs 1.88 kg/d) increased with 27% RUP. Efficiency of production was increased by both 41% NFC and 27% RUP. Total and whey N in milk increased (P 5 ±.05) while milk urea N decreased (P ± .01) with higher (41%) dietary RUP. Increased (P ± .05) absorption of N (490.4 vs. 461.6 g/d) at the SI occurred with the 47 vs. 41 % NFC diets, respectively, with no effects observed on that retained or excreted in the urine or milk. Although supply of methionine to and the absorption of N from the S1 was greater with the 47% NFC diets, no positive effects were observed on nitrogen balance or milk production. Rather, dietary RUP provided greater promise in that lower dietary RUP increased milk production and efficiency while increased RUP enhanced milk N content. Therefore, economics regarding feed costs as well as price for milk and milk components may largely dictate preferential dietary RUP content. Abbreviation key: ADC = apparent digestion coefficient, CGM corn gluten meal, CRN = carbon hydrogen nitrogen, CHO = carbohydrate, CNCPS = Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System, MUN = milk urea nitrogen, N = nitrogen, NAN = nonammonia N, NANMN = nonammonia nonmicrobial N, NFC = nonfibrous carbohydrate, NPN = nonprotein N, PUN = plasma urea N, RDP = rumen degradable protein, RUP = rumen undegradable protein, SI = small intestine, TDC = true digestion coefficient, 41:27 = 41% NFC and 27% RlUP, 47:27 = 47% NFC and 27% RUP, 41:41 = 41% NFC and 31% RUP, 47:41 = 47% NFC and 41% RUP. / Ph. / This study aimed to evaluate the substitution of dried citrus pulp and conventional urea to fine ground corn and slow release urea added to the concentrate of lactating dairy cows receiving sugarcane silage. Two Trials were carried out at the Animal Sciences Department, ESALQ/USP. In Trial 1, 24 lactating cows (8 Holstein cows and 16 Holstein/Jersey cows) with average production of 16 kg milk.day-1 were used. The animals were assigned to four paddocks with 6 cows each. Four iso-proteic rations with approximately 60% sugarcane silage and 40% concentrate were evaluated. Treatments differed in relation to concentrate NPN and energy source: a) corn-urea (MU), b) cornslow release urea (MO), c) citrus pulp-urea (PU), d) citrus pulp-slow release urea (PO). Experimental concentrates were formulated with soybean meal, mineral premix, citrus pulp or ground corn and urea or slow release urea. On treatments MO and PO, urea was partially replaced (80%) by slow release urea (SRU). Total mixed rations (TMR) were prepared on a scaled mix wagon and offered to the animals twice a day. Statistical design was a 4x4 Latin Square, with a 2x2 factorial arrangement. Paddocks were the experimental units and variables were analyzed using Proc GLM (SAS, 1999). DMI was higher in rations prepared with citric pulp (p<0.05) without changing milk production and milk composition, when compared to corn rations. The slow release urea source did not affect the DMI (p>0.05), the milk production and milk composition, but it increased the weight gain in cows (p<0.05). In Trial 2, four non-lactating, non-pregnant Holstein cows with rumen canullas were used. Animals were kept in sheltered individual concreted floor pens. Treatments and statistical design were the same used in Trial 1. DMI, blood parameters and total tract nutrients digestibility data were analyzed using Proc GLM (SAS, 1999). In situ degradability of sugarcane silage DM, OM and NDF, ruminal parameters (pH, SCFA, NH3-N) data were analyzed using PROC MIXED (SAS, 2003), because these parameters were repeated along the experiment period. Citric pulp reduced the concentration of NH3-N (p<0.05), increased the DMI (p<0.05), and the total DM digestibility. Sugarcane silage NDF degraded inside the rumen was higher when mixed with corn than with citric pulp. Slow release urea did not change the rumen fermentation parameters and the in situ degradation (p>0.05) in comparison to the conventional urea.

AVALIAÇÃO DE PASTOS COM CAPIM ELEFANTE SOB OS SISTEMAS DE PRODUÇÃO ORGÂNICO E CONVENCIONAL / EVALUATION WITH ELEPHANT GRASS PASTURES UNDER THE ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Bratz, Vinicius Felipe 18 February 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this research was to evaluate the forage production, stocking rate and nutritive value of elephant grass in organic and conventional systems. In the organic system, were combined species with complementary growth periods; the elephant grass was planted in rows 3 m apart from each other; between rows of elephant grass, the annual ryegrass was seeding in the cool season and the development of spontaneous growing species in the warm season. In the conventional production two pastures were studied, one with the same strategy of organic production but with mineral fertilization, and the other elephant grass was cultivated alone. It was applied 120 kg of N ha-1 with mineral and organic fertilizer (manure of cattle and pig slurry) in the conventional and organic systems, respectively. Lactating Holstein cows were used in the evaluation. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments (grazing systems), three replicates (paddocks) with repeated measures (grazing cycles). The pre and post forage mass parameters, botanical and structural composition, forage production and stocking rate were evaluated. Forage samples were collected by the hand-plucking method to determine the organic matter, mineral matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, in situ organic matter digestibility. During the experimental period (370 days), nine grazing cycles were performed in organic and conventional systems (elephant grass in association of other plants) and eight grazing cycles in the conventional system (elephant grass alone). Forage production, stocking rate and crude protein of elephant grass were 31.9; 32.6; 24.2 t of dry matter ha-1; 3.4; 2.1; 4.6 animal units ha-1 and 16.6; 14.9; 13.6 %, respectively for the grazing systems. Considering the herbage yield, better performance were foud on mixture pastures. Higher values of crude protein were observed in the organic system.

Eighty two animals, 20 heifers and 62 cows, ½ Holstein/Zebu crossbred to Holstein P.O., were distributed in a completely random design experiment, with four treatments, as follows: T1 - control treatment (5 heifers and 16 cows), received 2.5 mL of physiological solution (SF), intramuscularly (i.m.), at the artificial insemination time (A.I.; d 0); T2 - (5 heifers and 15 cows), received 10 μg of BA (i.m.) at the artificial insemination time (d 0), T3 - (5 heifers and 16 cows), received 10 μg of BA (i.m.) 13 days after A.I. (d 0) and, T4 (=T2 + T3) (5 heifers and 15 cows), received 10 μg of AB (i.m.) on days 0 and 13 da AI. The injection of SF and BA were performed after blood collection. The animals were housed in free-stall with visual heat detection three times a day, each for 15 minutes. Heifers with body weight greater than 300 kg and cows considered able for reproduction, 45 days postpartum, were inseminated at the end of estrus by just one technician, with a semen pool from three differents sires, of proved fertility. Heifers were fed with grounded Pennisetum sp., hay grass, corn silage, orange peel and multiples mixtures and cows with total ration mixture (TMR) with variable quality according to the production. The serum urea concentration, total cholesterol and the plasma progesterone level (P4), and estimated the body condition score (ECC), days open (DPP), index of temperature and humidity (THI), minimum temperature (TMin) e maximum (TMax). The buserelin acetate (AB) did not affected the pregnancy rate of heifers or cows showing values of 100.00 and 37.52 (T1); 20.00 and 33.34 (T2); 100.00 and 31.25 (T3); and 40.00 and 40.00% (T4), respectively. In the heifers the injection of buserelin acetate at the IA time (T2) increased the cholesterol and decreased the P4 concentration when compared to the control heifers, and decreased the cholesterol and P4 concentration in the cows from T2, T3 and T4. The injection of buserelin to heifers and cows on the 13th (T3 and T4) reduced the urea concentration. (d 0).

Exigências nutricionais de vacas Nelore em lactação e de bezerros, do nascimento à desmama / Nutritional requirements of Nelore cows and calves, from birth to weaning

Fonseca, Mozart Alves 29 July 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-26T13:54:58Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 1273158 bytes, checksum: 5010e6427deded4bf97c5470c477af80 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-07-29 / The experiment was conducted to determine the nutritional requirements (energy, protein, macro minerals) of Nellore cows and their calves from birth to six months of age. A total of 40 Nellore, 20 cows and 20 calves, with average initial weight of 362 ± 25 and 30 ± 3 kg, respectively, were used. The calves were fed individually for periods of 90 to 180 days after calving cows. The cows were divided into maintenance (4) and performance (12) up to 90 days and also from 90 to 180 days postpartum. The calves were divided into 90 and 180 days, without food restriction. Eight animals were used as reference (four cows and four calves) The diet consisted of corn silage (CS) and concentrated with forage to concentrate ratio of 70:30 for the cows, and the CS provided ad libitum together with 0, 5 kg / day of concentrate to calves. The intake of dry matter and nutrients were calculated weekly from the laboratory analysis of food provided and leftovers were computed and discounted. Milk production was determined weekly by the method of weigh-suckle-weigh . Digestibility trials were carried out every 28 days (cattle) and another two for the calves. Fecal excretion was determined using the neutral detergent fiber indigestible (iNDF) as an indicator. Animals weights were taken every 28 days. Milking was performed every 28 days to measure the levels of fat, protein and lactoses in milk. The energy concentration, expressed in TDN was calculated from the nutrients disgestibilities. The diet energy concentration was obtained by the equation DE (Mcal / kg) = 5.65 x CPD + 9.39 x EED + 4.15 NDFD + 4.15 x DNFC. The content of protein, energy and minerals were estimated by the equation Y = a. Xb, where X is the empty body weight (EBW) and, a and b are the parameters of the allometric equation. Relations were obtained for average 0.894 (EBW / BW) and 0.936 (EBW / BWG) for cows and 0.9622 (EBW / BW) and 0.958 (EBW / BWG) for calves, respectively. The net energy for maintenance of cows (NEm) were 97.84 kcal/EBW0, 75 and the metabolizable energy for maintenance (EMm) were 140.17 kcal/EBW0, 75. The efficiencies of energy uses for xi maintenance and weight gain were respectively 0.70 and 0.44. The content of protein and minerals, except calcium, decreased with the increase in BW while the energy increased. The milk of cows had average contents of 3.71, 3.88 and 4.74%, respectively, for crude protein, fat and lactoses. We conclude that the requirements for NEm lactation of cows are 97.84 kcal/PCVZ0,75, while MEm are 140.17 kcal/PCVZ0, 75, the metabolizable protein requirements are 52, 8 g / kg of milk and to produce 1 kg of milk with 4% fat, nursing Nellore cows needs of 0.300 kg of TDN. For calves, the net requirements of protein and energy increased with increasing body weight, while the calcium decreased. The metabolizable protein requirements for gain of 1 kg BW were 216.96 and 261.98 g for calves with100 and 200 kg respectively. It is recommended to use the following equations to estimate the body content of Nelore infants: Protein (g / day) = 0.135 x PCVZ1, 0351; Energy (Mcal / day) = 1.1798 x PCVZ1, 1805; Ca (g / day ) = 0.091 x PCVZ0, 6019, P (g / day) = 0.00894 x PCVZ0, 9629; Na (g / day) = 0.00126 x PCVZ0, 9791, Mg (g / day) = 0.000405 x PCVZ0 , 9827; K (g / day) = 0.00165 x PCVZ0, 9364.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this research was to evaluate three grazing systems with Coastcross-1 (CC) + 100 kg N/ha/year + common vetch; CC + 100 kg N/ha/year + arrowleaf clover; and CC + 200 kg N/ha/year. Lactating Holstein cows were used in the evaluation. The grazing method was the rotative stocking, with one to two days of occupation. Thirteen grazing cycles were performed during the experimental period (354 days). The actual mean value of forage on offer was 5.3% of body weight. The forage mass, botanical composition, leaf/stem ratio; daily accumulation rate, production and forage intake; grazing efficiency, stocking rate and nutritive value were evaluated. Experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments (grazing systems), three replicates (paddocks) in completely split-plot time (grazing/seasons). The average of forage production and stocking rate were 21.0, 20.3 and 24.3 t/ha/year; 7.0, 6.5 e 7.7 animal units/ha/day, respectively. Crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and in situ digestibility of dry matter average values were 18.1, 16.7 and 17.6%; 57.8, 58.9 and 58.7%; 79.6, 78.9 and 80.6%, for the respective systems. High productivity were found on Coastcross-1 mixed with common vetch + 100 kg N/ha/year and Coastcross-1 alone + 200 kg N/ha/year. Better results to nutritive value were found on winter, especially on Coastcross-1 mixed with common vetch.

Produção de forragem e valor nutritivo de pastos de capim elefante sob manejo convencional e orgânico / Forage yield and nutritive value of elephantgrass on conventional and organic systems

Simonetti, Gabriela Descovi 15 February 2017 (has links)
The objective of this research was to evaluate the forage yield and nutritive value of elephantgrass on conventional and organic systems. In the organic system, species with complementary growth periods were combined; elephantgrass was planted in lines 3m apart from each other; between the rows of elephantgrass, during the winter period, ryegrass was sown and in the summer period the development of species of spontaneous growth was allowed. In the conventional production, two pastures were studied, one with the same strategy of organic production, but with chemical fertilization and another with elephantgrass cultivated alone. 100 kg of N ha-1 were applied with mineral and organic fertilization (bovine manure and pig slurry) in conventional and organic systems, respectively. Holstein cows receiving 0.9% of body weight complementary concentrate feed were used in the evaluation. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments (forage systems), three repetitions (paddocks) and with repeated measures in time (seasons). Forage mass parameters of pre and post grazing, botanical composition, forage production and nutritive value were evaluated. Forage samples were collected by hand-plucking technique for the determination of organic matter, crude protein and in situ digestibility of organic matter. During the experimental period (337 days) seven grazing cycles were performed. Forage production and stocking rate were 12548; 10270; 19168 kg ha-1 and 3.3; 2.1; 4.5 AU ha-1 dia-1, respectively, for the forage systems. Pastures mixed, on conventional and organic production, present best forage distribution throughout the seasons. Higher value of forage production was observed in elephantgrass cultivated alone, on conventional system. Better value of nutritional value parameters were observed in organic pasture.

Due the metabolic profile studies have focused on specialized pure breeds in this research was aimed to assess the metabolic profile of protein in two genetic groups of Holstein x Gir cows, from the second lactation order, in two periods of lactation, during the dry season. This work was carried out at the Fazenda Santa Luzia, belonging to the Grupo Cabo Verde, Passos - MG. Data were collected between May and August 2009, from ½ HG cows (37) and ¾ HG cows (35). Two periods of lactation were studied: from 28 to 60 and from 110 to 130 days. The feeding of the herd was conducted in accordance with milk production. From each animal, fasting, 10 mL of blood without anticoagulant, and 4.5 mL, with EDTA anticoagulant were collected. Milk yield and body condition score were evaluated and serum levels of urea, albumin, total protein and hemoglobin determined using a manual spectrophotometer, based on specific procedures for each component. Results showed that milk production was higher in animals ¾ HG in both periods of lactation and body condition score higher in the animals of the second period of lactation, but similar when comparing genetic groups. Although had occurred differences among lactation periods to the genetic groups for urea, albumin and total protein, results for these variables were similar as well as for hemoglobin into genetic groups. However genetic groups presented different results from those obtained for purebreds, demonstrating the need particularly to reconsider the nutritional management of these groups, when related to the purebreds. So, it s suggested that others research could be done in these conditions in order to elucidate this uncertain and to enable to construct tables with specific reference values for these genetic groups / A atividade leiteira é praticada em todo o território nacional e aproximadamente 70% da produção de leite do Brasil provem de animais derivados de cruzamentos de raças européias especializadas para produção de leite com raças zebuínas de excelente adaptação às condições tropicais.
