This dissertation aims the sociolinguistic dimension of the enslaved Africans' experience brought to Brazilian Empire by the illegal slave trade, that Joaquim Nabuco called the "Trilogy of hell," staged in "Africa", "the ocean" and "plantations" in southeastern Brazil. My goal was to investigate how Africans' linguistic repertoire helped to build the South Atlantic "strophes and prosodies" and address the issue of communication in each stage of the illegal slave trade to seek understand how the formation of new languages and the subsequent cultural exchanges were mobilized by enslaved Africans in daily struggle against massive illegal enslavement in the Brazilian Empire between 1831 and c.1850. Given the importance of the Atlantic routes that connected southeastern Brazil to Congo region and Angola, this research has focused its attention on Central Africans and their language skills, that is, how they learned and handled Portuguese language, negotiated speech communities from their mother tongues and exchange its cultural baggage. Thus, it becomes possible understand how the "language question" was linked with economic and power relations during Brazilian contraband and illegal enslavement amidst the process of State building in Brazilian Empire / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

A critical examination of translation and evaluation norms in Russian Bible translation

Wehrmeyer, Jennifer Ella 01 January 2003 (has links)
This research aimed to determine whether the rejection by Russian Orthodox Church leaders of recent translations of the Bible into Russian could be ascribed to a conflict of Russian and Western translation norms. Using Lefevere's (1992) notion of systems, the study compared the norms of Russian Bible translations, Western Bible translation and Russian literary translation, as well as those of a segment of the target audience, to determine the extent of their compatibility with each other and with the translations in question. The results showed that the recent translations did reflect the norms of Western Bible translation, but that these were not atypical of norms for previous Russian and Slavonic translations, nor for the norms of Russian literary translation. However, the results also showed that in practice target audience norms mirrored those of the Russian Orthodox Church, resulting in a similar rejection of the newer translations. / Linguistics / M.A. (Linguistics)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Almir Grigorio dos Santos.pdf: 24089573 bytes, checksum: 6645820e31162ea71a414f0ced2ec214 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-08-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis is within the research approach History of Linguistic Ideas, of the Program of Postgraduate Studies within Portuguese Language of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. It has as analyzes’ object the letters of Anchieta, drafted between 1554 and 1594. The principal goal of this research is to verify within the letters how Anchieta priest saw the education. The objectives are: a) to exhibit the structure of Anchieta's letters and b) to analyse in Anchieta's correspondence the contributions to Brazilian education of the sixteenth century. The formal education in Brazil was initiated by the priests of the Jesus’ company in 1553. Its members were men who lived not only for the teaching, such as it was primary, secondary and superior, but also of indoctrination. They traveled the world propagating the faith, instituting a place of teaching where they arrived and implanting the European’s culture. For the good achievement of the mission, the Jesuits wrote letters addressed to superiors. The paper is based on theorists of the History of Linguistic Ideas, the Annales and the Cultural History, such as Auroux, Burke, Chartier, Fávero & Molina. Through the collection and analysis of the letters written by Anchieta during the period in which he was in the Jesus’ company in Brazil, the correspondence structure and the education thematic are verified. As thesis’ conclusion we affirm that Anchieta, with his ideas, innovated the teaching within Brazil when he was understood that learning the Tupi it would be easier to teach the European’s language to the Indians / Esta tese situa-se na linha de pesquisa História das Ideias Linguísticas, do Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua Portuguesa da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo.
