An assistance programme for the learning disabled child in the secondary school

Gasant, Lémeez 06 1900 (has links)
Learning disabled (hereafter abbreviated as LD) adolescents have a hard time coping with the demands of secondary school and often experience frustration and failure. Educators have received little or no training to provide meaningful support for these learners. Despite sweeping policy changes LD learners' diverse needs are not being met in the classroom. Research indicates that LD learners are best served within the mainstream classroom. In-service training is necessary to help educators equip themselves with skills to cope with this new role. An assistance programme has been developed in this study to provide practical teaching and learning interventions, to help educators support the LD secondary school learner in regular mainstream classrooms. If LD learners are supported in the classroom they will acquire skills to become independent learners. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (with specialisation in Guidane and Counselling)

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this study was to determine the acute toxicity and the antinociceptive action, of the Essential Oil obtained from leaves of Ocimum basilicum L. (LAMIACEAE), PI-197442, manjericão maria bonita . The Ocimum presents various species, used in the folk medicine, like antispasmodic, sedative and carminative, in agriculture as repellent of insects. The acute toxicity was determined by probit method using 5 groups (N=6) of mice, both genders. The LD50 was 0,532g/kg from the animals. The antinociceptive effect was studied by three models of nociception: The abdominal writhes induced by acetic acid 0,6% (i.p.), Hot Plate and the Test of Formalin. The OE increased the nociceptive effect dependent-dose in the concentrations 50, 100 and 200mg/kg in 48,02%, 64,48% and 77,49%, respectively, in the Test of Wrighting. In the Hot Plate, the OE increased the time of staying under the thermal stimulus in the times of 0, 15, 30 and 60 minutes. In the time of 15 min, was obtained the most significant effect. The morphine 10mg/kg was used as antinociception pattern. The antagonist Nalaxone opiod, reverted the effect of OE-50 in all tested times. In the Test of Formalin, the OE presented significant effect just in the second phase. The OE-200, in this phase, reduced the licking times of hind paw in 74,66%. These results showed that the OE of Ocimum basilicum L. presented high toxicity (i.p.) and showed peripherical and central antinociception activities.

Middle school ELL and LD teachers' perceptions of the importance of reading methods

Lee, Pei-Yi January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Secondary Education / Charles E. Heerman / This study is a follow-up to Al-Fadda's (2004) investigation of middle school teacher's perceptions of the importance of reading methods. The primary research question to be addressed in this study was: What are ELL and LD teachers' perceptions of the importance of specific reading strategies for their respective types of students? To address this question the researcher developed a survey with five demographic questions and 44 reading methods based on the framework of the COBRA model developed by Heerman (2002). The researcher administered the survey to public middle and junior high school ELL and LD teachers from Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas and compared the two groups' perceptions of the importance of several reading strategies. Analysis of the results showed that there was a 60% agreement rate between the two teacher groups (no significant differences) for three of the COBRA goals (background knowledge, comprehension, and study and application) and a 40% difference rate between the two teacher groups (significant differences) for two of the COBRA goals (experiential learning and vocabulary). For the 44 survey items, there was an agreement rate of 82.82%, and a difference rate of 17.18%. The researcher concludes that there were more similarities than differences between ELL teachers' and LD teachers' perceptions of the importance of the surveyed reading methods, however, there were also real differences. The researcher found justification for the belief that ELL and LD teachers should be considered specialist teachers when it comes to rating the relative importance of reading methods. ELL teachers appear to be inclined to use reading methods related to language, experience, and vocabulary methods. The results also reveal that LD teachers appear to be inclined to use reading methods related to intervention strategies with conferencing, coaching, compensatory methods, specific skills development and memory processes. In addition, the researcher noted a large number of methods with small mean differences, showing the certain levels of agreement between the two teacher groups. In terms of the five teacher variables, percentage of ELL students, percentage of low-income students and school enrollment proved to be the least active variables but the teacher variables of teachers' education levels and teachers' experience levels were more active.

Accessing the learning lifeworld : transformative student learning experiences in regional academic travel at New York University Abu Dhabi

Beckerman, Jason January 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates the learning experiences of students who participated in short-term study abroad trips (also known as regional academic travel) offered by New York University Abu Dhabi’s Office of Global Education, with the objective of attaining an authentic account of these experiences. This authentic account supports a better understanding of a student’s experience, and leads to a more in-depth understanding of learning, which for this research is called the learning lifeworld. Phenomenography is used to capture the qualitative variation of individual experiences leading to four categories of description placed in logical relationship to one another yielding an outcome space of four conceptions of learning experience. Phenomenography alone, while reflective in nature, has limitations on determining an authentic account of experience. Therefore, it is helpful to draw upon reflective thinking ability, which produces information on each student’s ability to reason through an ill-structured problem, and puts students in a reflective thinking development stage, which is linked to a student’s critical reflection ability. Reflective judgment stages for each student were determined using the standard reflective judgment interview (King & Kitchener, 1994), and then compared against the instances conceptions of learning experience that appeared in each student account. A relationship was identified between instances of conceptions and the level of a student’s reflective thinking ability that could lead to a deeper understanding of the learning lifeworld through the language students used in responses from the phenomenographic interview and the reflective judgment interview. The findings of this research show that there were at least four qualitatively different ways students experienced regional academic travel trips. The categories developed through an analysis of student reflective accounts are: the regional academic travel experience complements and supplements classroom learning; develops academic skills; affects students’ future academic, personal, and professional endeavours; and offers students a chance to reflect on impacts they have made and can make in a community and the world. The results of this research make an original contribution to lifeworld theory, transformative learning, and short-term study abroad research by utilizing a unique combination of research approaches (phenomenography and reflective judgment to inform lifeworld theory and transformative learning) in a novel setting (NYU Abu Dhabi regional academic travel). The design of this research could be used for future studies to examine learning in an in-depth way, whilst assuring that the accounts given could be considered authentic. Finally, the results also led to recommendations for improvement of future regional academic travel trips offered by The Office of Global Education.

A Comparison of Written Composition Assessment Using Standard Format Versus Alternate Format Among College-Bound Students with Learning Disabilities and/or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Morris, Mary Ann 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of using a computer word processing program in the assessment of written expression with college-bound individuals who had been diagnosed with a learning disability (LD) and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Fifty-six (35 eleventh and 21 twelfth) graders, attending a private college-preparatory school for students with LD and/or ADHD, were administered the Spontaneous Writing composite of the Test of Written Expression - Third Edition (TOWL-3). The TOWL-3 has equivalent forms, Form A and Form B. One form was administered in accordance with the test manual, using paper and pencil (standard format). The other form (i.e., alternate format) was administered with word processing access. Paired samples tests (repeated measure) and bivariate correlation designs were computed to explore the relationships between measures. Results of the study revealed significant increases (p<.01) in the subtest and composite scores when participants were administered the test in the alternate format. Other components of the research study did not reveal strong meaningful relationships when cognitive ability, graphomotor speed, and keyboarding rate were compared with the standard and/or alternative formats of the writing composite. A high rate of comorbity was exhibited with the majority of participants (75%) having two or more LD and/or ADHD diagnoses. On an informal questionnaire, the participants endorsed a strong preference for the use of word processors in the majority of their written academic tasks. The study concludes that for students who are accustomed to producing written work on a word processor, restriction from this writing tool can adversely affect the results of their product, leaving a false impression, underestimating their writing skills, ability, creativity, and subject knowledge. In addition, having access to a word processor during high stakes testing is paramount. Inaccurate results can affect future opportunities, such as admission to postsecondary educational settings. In summary, future and more extensive studies are needed to continue to increase the understanding of assessment, diagnosis, instruction, and assistive technology (AT) options for individuals with written language disorders.

Top Gas Blowing Technique to Prevent Slopping in Ladle and Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Process

Harazeen, Abdullah January 2022 (has links)
In the steel industry, slag foaming plays a crucial role in many steel processes, given its positive impact on the thermal efficiency of the furnace and its life span. However, excessive foaming causes an overflow in the converter known as “slopping”. Slopping hinders the effectiveness of the processes, especially with the complex and unpredictable foaming rate. This problem occurs mainly in the BOS-processes and after melt tapping to the ladle furnace. The goal of this study is to test and relate a new foaming control system, by blowing a gas (nitrogen or argon) on the surface of the melt to suppress the foam. Firstly, the foaming index of the provided industrial heats for a general LD converter (21 heats) and Outokumpu’s ladle furnace (31 heats) were calculated to find which heat is most likely to slop. Then, a series of experiments were performed to investigate the new foam controlling system’s reliability using a cold model. The results demonstrated that blowing argon instead of nitrogen from the top nozzle suppresses the foam more effectively, which can be attributed to its higher density. Additionally, the optimal argon flow rate required to suppress the foam in worst-case slopping scenarios in the LD converter and the ladle furnace were 874 and 221 m3/min respectively. The provided data further supports the efficacy of this slopping prevention technique, in theoretical and practical aspects.

Genetic diversity of " brain genes" across worldwide

Gardner, Michelle 25 June 2007 (has links)
The work presented in this thesis is a study of the genetic variation in a set of genes related to neurological function ('Brain genes'). Twenty two genes are examined, all of which are involved in either the Dopaminergic, Serotonergic or the Glutamatergic systems of neurotransmission. The objective of the study has two aspects: on the one hand the analysis of genetic variation in a set of genes which are implicated in human disease, in this case psychiatric disease, across global human populations, towards the end of providing some new insight for gene mapping efforts, and on the other hand the study of genetic variation in this set of genes may reveal traces of the population history events undergone, including possible evidence for selection.

A Study on Vanadium Extraction from Fe-V-P Melts Derived from Primary and Secondary Sources

Lindvall, Mikael January 2017 (has links)
Vanadium extraction methods were developed for iron-vanadium-phosphorus (Fe-V-P) melts derived from processing of V-bearing titanomagnetites and steel slags. Studies on phase relationships of V slags were carried out to provide important understanding of the extraction processes. Phase relationship in vanadiferous slag was investigated experimentally at 1573K, 1673K and 1773K, for the compositional range of 0-6mass% Al2O3, 1-5mass% CaO, 10-17mass% SiO2, with MnO and V2O3 fixed at 5.5mass% and 30mass%, balanced with FeO. The slags were found to be solid-liquid mixtures, of liquid, spinel and in some cases free silica. Alumina was identified as the preferred additive to prohibit precipitation of free silica. A method for V extraction to vanadiferous slag was developed based on Fe-V(2mass%)-P(0.1mass%) melts at 1677K using a semi-industrial scale BOF. Oxidation was carried out with an oxygen enriched air jet and iron ore pellets. The complete dissolution of pellets was achieved by deliberately creating good stirring conditions utilising high momentary decarburisation rates. The P distribution to the slag was low when good stirring conditions was obtained. Phase relationship in Al2O3-CaO(25-35mass%)-SiO2-VOx slag was investigated experimentally at an oxygen partial pressure of 9.37•10-11atm and 1873K. The maximum solubility of V-oxide in the slag was 9-10mass% V2O3. Two solid phases were found, a solid solution of Al2O3 in V2O3 (karelianite) and hibonite with fractionation of V into the crystal structure. V extraction experiments to Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 based slags were carried out in 150kg scale by blowing CO2 gas into the metal bath consisting mainly of 1-10mass% V and 1mass% P. At these conditions, oxidation of V was favoured over Fe. Up to 10-13mass% V2O3 could be dissolved in the slag before a viscous slag saturated in V-oxide was observed. The phosphate capacity in the slag was low and as a result this slag could at once be subjected to a final reduction step for production of ferrovanadium with 40-50mass% V. / Metoder för att utvinna vanadin till högvärdiga vanadinslagger från metallsmältor innehållande främst järn (Fe), vanadin (V) och fosfor (P) utvecklades. / <p>QC 20170912</p>
