Uncelebrated Stylists: Wyndham Lewis, Ford Madox Ford, and the Artist as Masochist

Erwin, Chase Morgan 01 August 2010 (has links)
This study presents an attempt to understand the political and aesthetic relationship between two of Modernism’s most enigmatic authors, Wyndham Lewis and Ford Madox Ford by examining their novelistic practice in light of their writings on politics and social criticism. A close look at the use of ironic distance, a hallmark feature in our understanding of modernist fiction, in Tarr (1918) and The Good Soldier (1915) reveals both authors conscious effort to distance themselves from their novel’s subjects, Fredric Tarr and John Dowell respectively. In light of both novels’ satirical element, a scathing attack on bourgeois narcissism caused by the wealthier class’ persistent attempts to identify with hollow and self serving social roles through the sham-aristocratic prestige created by England’s pre-war commodity culture, and the fact that both Fredric Tarr and John Dowell are artist figures that somehow resemble their creators, this project reinterprets Ford and Lewis’ ironic distance as an instance of self-distanciation. From this we can infer that both Ford and Lewis were invested in the modernist idea of impersonality, not just as a artistic or literary technique, but as the artist’s only means of escaping the narcissistic and slothful trap of modern subjectivity, and that, along with the production of modernist art, they saw a continual self-effacement as the price of authenticity, therefore inspiring in them the conviction to live as “uncelebrated stylists.”

Modersmålslärare : klarspråk eller tunghäfta? / Mother tongue teachers : quite clear language or tounge-tied?

Jansen, Marléne January 2011 (has links)
This research is about different perspectives, offered by three mother tongue teachers, one principal and also featuring a representative from Skolverket, on the subject: teacher legitimation for mother tongue teachers, mother tongue teachers opportunity for competence education and the future of mother tongue education in Sweden. The theoretical framework is mother tongue language, globalization, the post-colonial theory, power and social inequality. A qualitative approach was used including five interviews taken place in Stockholm, the results does not however represent the whole country nor the community of Stockholm itself. The result shows that mother tongue teachers thinks the teacher legitimation does not mean anything regarding their already low-status. Even principal and representative from Skolverket express their concern towards the 'non-demand' for mother tongue teachers to get their legitimation and they feel there is a lack of ambition from decisonmakers to include the mother tongue teachers. As per today there is no higher education for mother tongue teachers leading towards an exam. Mother tongue teachers are worried about their future although principal and representant takes a bright outlook.

Eutanazijos politika: Lyginamasis Europos Sąjungos šalių-narių kontekstas / Euthanasia policy: Comparative context of the member states of the European Union

Karengaitė, Asta 04 August 2009 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Public and personal health is one of the priority policies of every state. However, despite the attempt to ensure the protection of human health, every day people in all over the world inevitably come face to face with death. While talking about the incurable patients, who suffer from severe pain or are in coma, some countries raise the question of euthanasia, which is often defined as the intentional taking of a person‘s life for the good of that person by the means as delicate as possible. However, the legitimation of euthanasia is a sensitive issue, always accompanied by the savage debates between its supporters and opponents. The aim of this work is to discuss the aspects of the legitimation of euthanasia and to investigate the attitude of Lithuanian society towards the described phenomenon. The first part of this paper discloses the theoretical description of the model. Using the analysis of scientific literature, the subchapters discuss the theoretical models of public policy formation and interest groups, on which this work is based. The second part reviews the policy of euthanasia. The subchapters discuss the phenomenon of euthanasia, its types and the arguments of interest groups for and against the policy of euthanasia. Moreover, the cases of the legitimation of euthanasia in the Netherlands and Belgium are analyzed and compared. The third chapter is devoted to the practical part of the work. The quantitative empirical study accomplished in Lithuania, which has... [to full text]

Musik i (ut)bildning : gränsdragningar och inramningar i läroplans(kon)texter för gymnasieskolan

Lilliedahl, Jonathan January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is critically to illustrate discursive recontextualization between sociocultural production and reproduction, with respect to both relations within and relations to music education in Swedish upper-secondary school. The starting point for the study is the Swedish upper-secondary school reform, Gy 2011, which has involved a marked reformulation of the agenda for music education in upper-secondary school. The general Artistic Activities disappeared, at the same time as the significance of a specialising education in the field was strengthened. This dissertation is driven by the desire to understand the results of the upper-secondary school reform by explaining the processes and principles involved. But, in a wider perspective, the dissertation deals not only with a single reform, but encompasses a search for the underlying principles that have had, and are having, a regulating effect on the design and positioning of music in publicly regulated education. The results show that structuring of the subject of music takes place primarily through the classification and framing of social relationships in general, and of interactional relationships in particular. The focus of these relationships has shifted from time to time, and varies from context to context, but has always been in relation to something that has been regarded as sacred. In recent times, the framing within music-oriented knowledge practices has become weaker. At the same time, such knowledge practices have shown an increasing need for the drawing of boundaries in relation to other knowledge practices. The latter also has a value in explaining why general music content was removed from the upper-secondary school curriculum, whereas a special and specialising educational programme was able to gain legitimacy.
