Structuralism and "The Story of Asdiwal"

McLaren, Darcee L. 09 1900 (has links)

This thesis shows that the criticisms of Levi-Strauss' analysis, entitled "The Story of Asdiwal", arise out of the careless application of structuralist principles on the part of Levi-Strauss. They are not due to problems inherent in structuralism itself. To further this point, the story of Asdiwal is re-analyzed using a rigourous application of structuralism which avoids the mistakes made by Levi-Strauss. That is, it takes all the versions into account, considers the ethnographic material in detail, and uses those ethnographic sources with attention to focus and method of collection. The result is an analysis which shows the theme of the story of Asdiwal to be rivalry while the basic binary opposition is between competition and cooperation and not between the matriline and the patriline as Levi-Strauss supposed.
/ Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Lima, Jarbas Couto e 25 November 1998 (has links)
Tais noções são relidas a partir de alguns pontos da elaboração de Jacques Lacan sobre a linguagem e da noção de estrutura em Edmund Leach / Abstract: The aim of this work is to discuss the hypothesis put forward by Claude Lévi-Strauss that language could be taken as a condition for culture. Our initial assumption is that Lévi-Strauss works allow a double interpretation relatively to such hypothesis. A first interpretation is built upon the examination of that hypothesis under the light of the theoretical principIes set up by Structural Linguistics, as well as by relating them to Lévi-Strauss's intention of giving a strict scientific status to Anthropology. The second interpretation is built upon the examination of the notions of language and culture presented by Lévi-Strauss in some of the works published after L' Anthropologie Structurale, such as La Potiere Jalouse and La Pensée Sauvage. Such notions are revised on the basis of some of the points concerning language as developed by Jacques Lacan as well as of the notion of structure present in Edmund Leach's work / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Interpreting references to the subject in philosophical writings

Nickless, David, M.A. January 2008 (has links)
In this thesis I will develop and test an interpretive framework for the Subject based on the understanding that an entity can be identified as a Subject if it is the necessary referent for an attribution. This understanding provides a template for approaching different Subjects, for considering the validity of their being identified as Subjects, and for reorienting the general discourse of the Subject away from an investigation of particular entities to one concerned with the contexts which support such identifications.

Os anacronautas do teutonismo virtual : uma etnografia do neonazismo na internet / Anachronauts of the virtual teutonicism : an ethnography of the neo-nazism in internet

Neste processo, evidencia-se a elaboração de uma forma específica de identidade: o ¿teutonismo¿ / Abstract: This research attempts to apprehend the symbolic universe of racist, revisionist and neonazi pages in the Internet. The aim of the investigation is to understand what kind of relationship is built between the digital space and the defense of the idea of an "Aryan race" attempted by my 'natives¿. This is done by means of ethnographic observation of practices and discoursive representations posted at sites, forums, communities, chats and discussion lists. I focus on those symbolics aspects that highlight best the interface between digital space and racism, by means of both empirical research and theoretical exercise. From this vantage point, some features of the identitary construction developed by racists for themselves and for others were made visible, namely, the genomic and mythic marks of their discourse, the redefinition of the frontiers between digital world and reality, and the ¿aryan¿ political struggle in the WEB. The main argument resulting from this research is that the neonazism interprets symbolically the contemporary world by articulating myths, narratives e rituals. Along this process, a specific way of identity is manifested: the ¿teutonicism¿ / Mestrado / Antropologia Social / Mestre em Antropologia Social

Both were directly or indirectly representative of the theoretical thoughts and trends which provided a synthesis of the influences for Brazilian Social Sciences along the years: the North-American and the European lineages. The North-American sociologist Samuel Harman Lowrie was hired by the Escola Livre de Sociologia e Política and by the São Paulo City Administration, and developed a study in the area of Sociology and its practical applications, whereas the French ethnologist Dina Lévi-Strauss, with the support and trust from Mário de Andrade, conduced actions in the area of Ethnography, aiming at the possibility of obtaining reconnaissance in her professional life. During a short period, these two scholars allowed the simultaneity of theoretical reflections and practical actions in the universe of public policies, since they believed that Brazil was a favorable place for the development of scientific research / Este trabalho analisa as contribuições de Samuel Harman Lowrie e Dina Lévi-Strauss ao Departamento de Cultura de São Paulo na gestão de Mário de Andrade, entre 1935 e 1938.
