Painleve Analysis, Lie Symmetries and Integrability of Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations

Lu, Yixia January 2005 (has links)
The Painleve analysis plays an important role in investigating local structure of the solutions of differential equations, while Lie symmetries provide powerful tools in global solvability of equations. In this research, the method of Painleve analysis is applied to discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations and to a family of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Lie symmetries are studied together with the Painleve property for second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. In the study of the local singularity of discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations, the Painleve method shows the existence of solution blow up at finite time. It also determines the rate of blow-up. For second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations, the Painleve test is introduced and demonstrated in detail using several examples. These examples are used throughout the research. The Painleve property is shown to be significant for the integrability of a differential equation. After introducing one-parameter groups, a family of differential equations is determined for discussing solvability and for drawing more meaningful conclusions. This is the most general family of differential equations invariant under a given one-parameter group. The first part of this research is the classification of the integrals in the general solutions of differential equations obtained by quadratures. The second part is the application of Riemann surfaces and algebraic curves in the projective complex space to the integrands. The theories of Riemann surfaces and algebraic curves lead us to an effective way to understand the nature of the integral defined on a curve. Our theoretical work then concentrates on the blowing-up of algebraic curves at singular points. The calculation of the genus, which essentially determines the shape of a curve, becomes possible after a sequence of blowing-ups.The research shows that when combining both the Painleve property and Lie symmetries possessed by the differential equations studied in the thesis, the general solutions can be represented by either elementary functions or elliptic integrals.

Simetrias de Lie e modelagem estocástica da regulação da expressão gênica / Lie symmetries and stochastic modeling of gene expression regulation

Ramos, Alexandre Ferreira 16 September 2008 (has links)
O invariante desta álgebra define a meia-vida relativa do regime dinâmico do gene. / In this thesis we show that the stochastic binary model to protein synthesis by na auto-regulated gene is completely solvable. The time-dependent solution is written in terms of the confluent Heun functions. We present an example of probability dynamics to this gene. To get that, we developed a recurrence relation between arbitrary derivatives of the confluent Heun functions. We also show the existence of a Lorentz-like Lie symmetry SO(2, 1). This is an analogous to the angular momentum symmetry but presenting one wrong sign in its preserved form. This invariant defines the relative half-life of the dynamical regime of the gene. The equivalent of the azimuth angular momentum measures indirectly the activity level of the gene. The ladder operators connect distinct stochastic processes of protein synthesis. The fluctuations of these processes are classified in terms of the relation between labeling numbers of a representation of the algebra. In the group theory formalism, the stochastic model to an externally regulated gene is a particular case of the model to an auto-regulated gene. We compare these two gene regulation strategies, and show that the auto-regulated gene can synthesize proteins into the super Poisson, Poisson, and sub Poisson fluctuating regimes. The externally regulated gene only presents the super Poisson and Poisson regimes. Therefore, the auto-regulation is responsible for a more precise control of gene expression. We also show that the dynamics of the auto-regulated genes has a shorter half-life. Thus, the auto-regulation permits faster responses of the system to external perturbation.

Symmetry methods and some nonlinear differential equations : Background and illustrative examples / Symmetrimetoder och några icke-linjära differentialekvationer : Bakgrund och illustrativa exempel

Granström, Frida January 2017 (has links)
Differential equations, in particular the nonlinear ones, are commonly used in formulating most of the fundamental laws of nature as well as many technological problems, among others. This makes the need for methods in finding closed form solutions to such equations all-important. In this thesis we study Lie symmetry methods for some nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE). The study focuses on identifying and using the underlying symmetries of the given first order nonlinear ordinary differential equation. An extension of the method to higher order ODE is also discussed. Several illustrative examples are presented.

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to show how to use Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids to get a better understanding of problems concerning symmetries, invariants and moduli spaces of geometric structures of finite type. In general terms, these structures are objects defined on manifolds which can be characterized by a coframe (on a possibly different manifold). Examples include G-structures of finite type and Cartan geometries. For a given class of such structures whose moduli space (of germs) of elements is finite dimensional, we are able to construct a Lie algebroid A ! X, called the classifying Lie algebroid, which has the following properties: 1. To each point on the base X there corresponds a germ of a geometric structure which belongs to the class. 2. Two such germs are isomorphic if and only if they correspond to the same point in X. 3. The isotropy Lie algebra of A at a point x is the symmetry Lie algebra of the corresponding geometric structure. 4. If two germs of the geometric structure belong to the same connected manifold, then they correspond to points on the same orbit of A in X. Moreover, when the classifying Lie algebroid is integrable, its Lie groupoid can be used to construct explicit models of the geometries in the class being described. These models turn out to be universal in the sense that every other geometric structure in the class is locally isomorphic to one of these models, and globally equivalent up to covering to an open set of one of these models. We describe this throughly when the geometric structure in consideration is a finite type G-structure. One of the consequences of our construction is that the classifying Lie algebroid can be used to obtain invariants of the corresponding geometric structures. We present two examples of invariants that are induced by the cohomology of the Lie algebroid. The method that we use to prove the statements above is to define the notion of a Maurer-Cartan form on a Lie groupoid, as well as a Maurer-Cartan equation for Lie algebroid valued differential one forms. We then prove a universal property for the Maurer-Cartan form of a Lie groupoid. We believe that these results are of independent interest. To conclude this thesis, we give a description of several examples related to torsionfree connections on G-structures. Our main class of examples are the special symplectic connections for which we include a detailed discussion. / Doutorado / Geometria Diferencial / Doutor em Matemática

The Lie Symmetries of a Few Classes of Harmonic Functions

Petersen, Willis L. 23 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In a differential geometry setting, we can analyze the solutions to systems of differential equations in such a way as to allow us to derive entire classes of solutions from any given solution. This process involves calculating the Lie symmetries of a system of equations and looking at the resulting transformations. In this paper we will give a general background of the theory necessary to develop the ideas of working in the jet space of a given system of equations, applying this theory to harmonic functions in the complex plane. We will consider harmonic functions in general, harmonic functions with constant Jacobian, harmonic functions with fixed convexity and a few other subclasses of harmonic functions.
