Journalistik i ett nytt medium : En studie av hur journaliststudenter på två universitet i Sverige använder Twitter / Journalism in a new medium

Durefelt, Filip, Skarhall, Tobias January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study was to find out how journalism students at two universities in Sweden, Gothenburg University and Linnaeus University in Kalmar, use the social networking service Twitter. We were primarily interested in whether the students are using Twitter as a journalistic tool, which includes gathering, production and distribution of material. The study focused on journalism students because they soon will enter the working life and therefore can provide an indication of whether Twitter is a part of the future of journalism. We have used theories of mass communication to describe the development in the area and explore how journalism has adapted to this change. The study was conducted in the form of a survey in which the students answered questions about how they use Twitter and what they think about the social networking service. The results show that a large percentage of the journalism students use Twitter as a journalistic tool, but not in a particularly high degree. We noticed, however, that their usage differ from their thoughts and that many see Twitter as a useful tool in journalism.

Creative People and Industries for Growth and Development : A case study of the municipality of Kalmar

Mello, Michelle January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the relationship between place and creative people and industries. The shift from industrial economies to knowledge-driven economies has ushered in what some scholars refer to as the Creative Economy. At the heart of this new economy are the Creative Industries, which consist of people, creativity, skill and talent. These industries, which are creating more jobs and adding increased value to products and services, represent one of the largest and fastest growing sectors. In Sweden, the Creative Industries are increasingly being recognized as an important asset for global competitiveness and research reveals that 35% of Sweden’s employed are considered part of the so-called ‘Creative Class’: artists, researchers, managers and other related professionals. The research also reveals, however, that there is an uneven distribution of this talent pool throughout the country. As regional growth is of continual concern in Sweden, there has been an increased focus on the potential of the Creative Industries to stimulate development on the local and regional level. The municipality of Kalmar recognizes that its strong cultural institutions are among its greatest assets and they are working to integrate culture and cultural values into the city planning process in order to create an attractive environment. In addition, their recent establishment as a university town is considered to be of the utmost significance in their struggle to attract creative people and industries, and Linnaeus University is recognized as an important motor for regional development as well as a seedbed for innovation, research and new companies.

An interview study of media ethics in a new medium

Ericsson, Elin, Svensson, Emil January 2013 (has links)
The aim of our study was to examine Swedish crime reporters’ approach to the social medium Flashback. Our main focus was the crime reporters’ use of the medium Flashback, and attitude towards their own use of media ethics in relation to the medium Flashback. Flashback as a medium is not obliged to any media ethics and lacks a legally accountable publisher. In the search for information about committed crimes people tends to visit Flashback for the information that the traditional media cannot offer. In that sense Flashback challenges the foundation of media ethics today. That is why we found it interesting to study crime reporters in particular. The study used a qualitative approach and was conducted through interviews with eight crime reporters. We have used theories about media ethics, social media and participatory journalism to explore the development in the area and how journalists have adapted to this change. The result shows that there are journalists who use Flashback as a journalistic tool to find information, to save time and as a mean to keep up-to-date. And moreover, the study gives examples on how an online forum with anonymous sources can be used – like any other source, as long as you are source-critical.

Age and Growth of the Brown Trout Salmo trutta fario Linnaeus in Logan River, Utah

Sigler, William 01 May 1951 (has links)
The Logan River flowing southwesterly through the mountains of Cache County, Utah is comparatively cold to the mouth of Logan Canyon. The stream is characterized by steep gradient, a high velocity and relatively few pools. A total of 1053 brown trout were examined during the course of this study; 286 were retained for age and growth determinations. The body scale relationship is L : 40.46 mm. + 0.4l85R + 0.01908R^2 where L equals standard length in millimeters and R equals scale radius times 80.

Linnean Observations – An Architectural Exposé on Landscape in Time

Stockselius, Johan January 2020 (has links)
This thesis project explores landscape and the transformations that occur to it over time. Using architectural interventions the project sets out to find a way of narrating and emphasising the transformation processes that take place in the landscape, striving to challenge and deepen the understanding of both man’s and nature’s impact on the environment we inhabit. With the backdrop of the city of Uppsala and the well documented findings of Carl Linnaeus’ field studies along his herbal excursion trails called the Herbationes Upsaliensis, this project takes a closer look on one of the trails, the Ultuna trail.  From investigating the trail, a selection of stories representing different types of landscape transformations that have taken place along the trail, has been made. By introducing an alternative trail parallel to the Ultuna trail, lined with architectural interventions, the objective has been to present the Ultuna trail from new perspectives, creating a new way of experiencing of our surroundings.

The Linnaeus Trails of Uppsala – Evaluating the Future Threats Against the Linnaeus Botanical Heritage. A Case Study.

Lundgren, Marie, Gustin Norberg, Ylva January 2024 (has links)
This case study aimed to assess the potential threats to the Linnaeus botanical heritage in Uppsala Municipality, focusing on the Linnaeus Trails and their surroundings. These trails are part of Uppsala's green infrastructure, providing cultural and supporting ecosystem services that enhance urban resilience.  The study investigated potential threats to the Linnaeus trails from different angles, including management and governance, urban expansion, habitat fragmentation, wear and tear, UNESCO World Heritage plans, genetic contamination, and invasive species. Data was collected through reviews of scientific literature and municipal governance documents, with informants providing additional insights, clarifications, and primary data. The authors also compared historical and current maps to identify changes over time and conducted study visits to verify the information. The findings revealed that the Linnaeus botanical heritage is threatened in all examined areas, with urban expansion, landownership issues, habitat fragmentation, and genetic contamination identified as the primary threats. Additionally, shifting baselines and landownership were highlighted as significant concerns. The findings also showed that the botanical heritage and the Linnaeus Trails are most protected within designated nature reserves. However, the management of the Linnaeus heritage involves numerous stakeholders, which might lead to instability in preservation strategies.  To address these challenges, the authors propose that the municipality should establish a biological rescue plan for the Linnaeus botanical heritage, complementing Uppsala’s Green Plan. This plan should guide stakeholders in avoiding genetic contamination and utilise expertise from SLU and Uppsala University to protect Linnaean species. A centralised governing body should be responsible for the long-term management. Allocating more resources for communication and advocacy around the Linnaeus Trails will help garner public and political support. Awareness of shifting baselines in urban planning is essential for protecting this heritage. In conclusion, this case study underscores the need for coordinated and proactive measures to protect the Linnaeus botanical heritage from environmental and anthropogenic threats.

The relationships maintained by the population that inhabits the Suape Bay for generations is a complexity composed by relevant elements as historical, economic, social, cultural or environmental which are analyzed in this study. Through a quantitative and qualitative perspective, we seek to analyze the mode of production and reproduction of theirs lives, which are strongly attached with elements of the local nature, as well the marine territory category and with their cultural manifestations. They are facing the growing social changes resulted by the pressures coming from the enterprises and the development promises of the most emblematic economic policy megaproject of Pernambuco State, the Suape Port and Industrial Complex. We can say that the contemporary scenario showed to the Suape population, who are rooted into a rustic culture and traditional modal of life based on their small scale fishing practice, is a turning point, once some of them realize they are living one social and environmental conflict against the economic development machine, in the same time that others see each other in an uprooting process with their own territory. So there are some of the Sea Urchin Festival expressions that now just belong to the social and folk memory sphere, as well other ones get the drift, getting an uncertain way.

The torment of Egypt and the missfortune of the traveller : The torment of Egypt and the missfortune of the traveller - a comparative study on the travel writings of Petrus Forsskål and Fredric Hasselquist

Waldmann Bergvall, Carl January 2019 (has links)
In the 1700’s, natural history played an essential part in constructing the western view of the east and its inhabitants. Based on this assumtion, the primary aim of this study has been to examine how two of Carl Linaeus’ apostles (Petrus Forsskål and Fredric Hasselquist) wrote about their specific cultural encounters while travelling.   In its essence, the results of the study has been that Mary Louise Pratts  previous writings are applicable also on the travel writings of Forsskål och Hasselquist. Altough with a few significant deviations. For example it seems that the apostles considered the native history more relevant than what Pratts theory would give them credit for.

Platsens blick : Vetenskapsakademien och den naturalhistoriska resan 1790-1840 / The place's glance : The Royal Academy of Science and Scientific Travel, 1790-1840

Eliasson, Pär January 1999 (has links)
The purpose of the present dissertation is to study the relationship between travel as a form of knowledge and the natural history pursued at the Royal Academy of Science during the period 1790-1840. Primarily, this dissertation deals with the perception of travel as a form of knowledge which existed at the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, though a number of selected journeys are used to illustrate the era's shifting perceptions on travel. Chapter One compares two variants of scientific travel, Linnean and Humboldtian. While the Linnean saw single objects, the Humboldtian saw "the whole" in the form of places. Places became the new study objects and the conditions reigning there were assumed to explain the special characteristics of the objects. This is what is implied by the "place's glance". Chapter Two provides an historical background to the subsequent debate about the theory and practice of scientific travel by scrutinizing works from the apodemic handbook genre. The purpose of apodemics was to make travel a method for the disciplined, systematic gathering of knowledge, which was achieved by organizing all aspects into categories.. In Chapter Three, the natural history of the day is understood as a multiplicity of research traditions with a common object of study - the specimens found in the three kingdoms of nature. A number of models of scientific collection which were applied by the Academy around 1800 are analyzed. The correspondent model using local amateur collectors is contrasted with the model of the travelling professional scientist. The greatest problem of the travel model was the "route problematic", engendering a haphazardness in the collection of facts and specimens. In Chapter Four, the relationship between travel and the theories of natural history of the age is investigated through a case study of Göran Wahlenberg's travels in 1800-1810. As a result of the insights Wahlenberg achieved during his travels in the mountain regions of the land, the new botanical sub- discipline of plant geography was established. This demanded travel, since it was based on observations of the plants' spatial relationships to one another and measurements of other specific spatial phenomena, such as climate. Wahlenberg saw complex, multifacetted aggregates of plants and vegetation, where the Linnean only discerned separate species. Herein lies the meaning of the "place's glance". Chapter Five analyzes the botanical journeys undertaken by the Academy between 1820 (when a travel grant was instituted) and 1840. Patriotic and utilitarian arguments for domestic travel combined with their results lent scientific travel a new status at the Academy. Chapter Six deals with zoological travel during the same period. The main figures are the curators of the Swedish Museum of Natural History, J. W. Dalman and B. F. Fries, who formulated the zoological travel policy of the Academy. The needs of the museum dictated that the travellers focus on Sweden and Scandinavia, primarily the "Western seaboard", which included Bohuslän and the Norwegian Atlantic coast, and Norrland. The specific needs of marine biology forced Fries to develop new travel practices. Fries' establishment of a provisional research station for year-round zoological research was an important historical breakthrough. His idea of outfitting sea-going vessels as mobile research stations also prefigures the future development of polar travel later in the century. / digitalisering@umu

Den lokala profilen : Person, plats och kulturarv / The Local Profile : Persons, Places and Cultural Heritage

Linder, Johan January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine the use of famous historical or fictional persons in place branding. It seeks to analyze the images of places that are produced, and the representations of persons that are used in branding practices. Largely this use is located within a tourist discourse, begging the question how tourists take part in the shaping of these cities. In sum, the study aims to examine constructions of the past and the present, as well as representations of gender. The main question is which parts of the history of a city are described and which sites are highlighted. Four cases studies are presented. First, the uses of the heritage connected with author Selma Lagerlöf in and around Sunne are examined, in particular her former residence, Mårbacka, now musealized. Second, Uppsala's and Småland's uses of the Carl Linnaeus heritage are surveyed. Third, the uses of inventor Johan Petter Johansson in Enköping are studied, and fourth the tourist and heritage practices around fictional police detective Kurt Wallander in Ystad are examined. Taken at face value, these examples differ from each other in many ways. The aim of the dissertation is to track these differences, but also the likenesses in practices, meaning production and visualizations. In sum, the aim of this dissertation is to examine how the productions of meaning are influenced through the use of these individuals. How do visitors influence the production on these heritage sites? Is there room for change in descriptions of persons and places? How are ideas of authenticity produced when places are viewed through one individual? What ideas of gender and masculinity are produced?
