An explorative study on the potential to establish a local value chain in the Swedish home textile industryMayinger, Lisa, Darkovska, Adrijana, Lin Yuen, Suet January 2018 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this research paper is to examine the potential of the Swedish textile industry to achieve more sustainability in the home textile segment, through establishing a local value chain for local consumption. The aim is to explore the potential of both the supply and demand side of the local market. For the supply, or the industry perspective, the goal is to show companies the relevant aspects to consider when choosing to establish a local value chain in Sweden, with a focus on the home textile segment. For the demand, or the consumer perspective, the objective is to find out how they perceive locally produced sustainable products and whether there is interest for purchasing such products. Methodology: Existing literature and relevant results from researches have been collected and used as secondary sources, for forming and backing up the industry perspective of the thesis work. Face to face interviews have been conducted and analyzed, for getting primary information for the consumer perspective for the paper. This work is an explorative study, combining information for both the supply and demand sides of the home textiles segment in Sweden. Findings: After combining the findings from the literature review and the results from the analysis from the interviews, it can be concluded that there is a potential to establish a local value chain in Sweden. The situation is not ideal though, also potential risks and drawbacks related to the locality of the value chain of the home textiles segment that are presented have to be considered. The paper explores both the advantages and the disadvantages for producing locally in Sweden, to estimate the existing potential.

Detta är något som i sin tur bidrar till landsbygdsutveckling och en stärktsjälvförsörjningsgrad / Sweden’s degree of self-sufficiency in food has decreased from 75 percent in the 90s to today’s 50 percent, at the same time the country’s arable land is decreasing and agricultural companies are closing down. The summer of 2018 was one of the hottest summer periods on record, a year in which a large part of Sweden was affected by drought. The consequences of the extreme weather events affect are and will continue to affect the Swedish food supply. An increased production of food can increase both work opportunities and lead to more informed choices for consumers. The Swedish food strategy aims to create work opportunities, growth and reduce vulnerability within the food chain, in order to increase the country’s degree of self-sufficiency. Gävleborg has created its own plan of action to achieve goals such as sustainable food production and competitiveness. Through this thesis, the authors want to present the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that producers in Gävleborg experience. How food production can lead to the development of the country and give examples of how resilient agriculture can be made possible. Food producers were therefore given the opportunity to present their experiences of being a local producer in Gävleborg through a questionnaire linked to the topic. The authors then performed a SWOT analysis based on the responses. The price of commodities has increased since 2021, which has affected agriculturethrough increased costs of among other things, fertilizer, feed, and electricity, but producers state that they do not dare to increase their commodity prices due to an already reduced purchasing power. This means that food producers’ margins become low, and the economic situations becomes strained. However, the producers and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) felt that local food have strengths such as quality and resilience, something that can contribute to increasing Gävleborg’s self-sufficiency rate from 38 percent to higher proportions of locally produced food compared to the year 2021. This is something that can potentially be made possible through resilient and regenerative agriculture where natural nutrient sources, stored water and renewable energy are used. Rural development is a prerequisite for growth and reduced unemployment within Gävleborg, and agriculture plays an important role in creating work through food production. This is something that in turn contributes to rural development and a strengthened degree of self-sufficiency

Norra Tornen: Making exclusive living inclusiveWilner, Oscar January 2020 (has links)
Today our city cores are being transformed. Not only have they been transformed from a place of production to a place of consumption, but more recently also the city core as a place of work are being challenged by increasing land prices and the desire to live centrally and urban. An urban lifestyle has in some ways become an exclusive benefit for the most wealthy, and the tall residential towers symbolizes this new urban, transnational elite, that wants the qualities of a living city center but prefers to live high up in the sky. Though this elite sometimes never lives there, since they only see the apartments as investments, as a “money deposit”. These buildings increase gentrification and segregation since they push up the housing prices of the city cores and provide no public functions, we get excluding cities rather than including. In my thesis project I speculate how we can prevent our city centers from becoming an excluding and exclusive gated community, and I develop a general redesign strategy for the exclusive residential tower typology. I have searched for a collective rather than individualistic approach, that considers both environmental and social sustainability.

Självförsörjning i Norrbotten : En Analys av Nuvarande Situation och Utmaningar för en Hållbar Framtid / Self-Sufficiency in Norrbotten : An Analysis of the Current Situation and Challenges for a Sustainable FutureAhlstrand, Viktor January 2024 (has links)
This thesis analyzes challenges and opportunities connected to logistics to increase self-sufficiency in food production in Norrbotten, Sweden. The northern location and extreme climate contribute to different challenges and difficulties for transportation and production. The aim of this study was to propose actions to improve logistics and self-sufficiency in the region. By a literature review and data collection from the workshop “Arctic Food Arena,” the analysis of the degree of self-sufficiency was made. The results showed challenges in profitability for local producers, and a decrease in primary production was a major issue for sustainability. A continuous decrease in dairy cows and milk production is to be reckoned with in the future, which can affect the regional economy. Another challenge is that due to the cold climate, some food can't be produced locally. Greenhouse farming has proved to be a good alternative in this matter. The grain cultivation has seen a large reduction, which has increased the dependence on imported goods. In logistics and distribution, greenhouse gas emissions from milk production are a big concern, but locally produced food is not necessarily the most effective way to reduce emissions. Packaging, storage, order processing, and finance are other areas where challenges occur. Most producers choose to maintain control by themselves instead of outsourcing these tasks to a third party, even though they are time-consuming and not performed very well. Economic incentives are crucial for both farmers and consumers, as their choices impact competition within the regional agriculture sector. To effectively manage seasonal products and reduce losses, optimizing storage capacity through investments in refrigeration facilities and the utilization of external logistics solutions is proposed. Increased self-sufficiency is part of the equation, but it alone is insufficient to reduce climate impact. A more climate-friendly production process is necessary, involving a strongly climate-conscious strategy and investments to decrease emissions and optimize resource utilization in the long term.

The Skåne Sofa / SkånesoffanSalonen Ripa, Beata January 2024 (has links)
As a counterpoint to globalisation, I wanted to see how locally a sofa can be produced and investi- gate how outsourcing affects Swedish production. The project is set in the Swedish region Skåne and shaped around three themes: locality, the consumer’s relationship to the product and ”design for disassembly”. The result is a deconstructable sofa made of Skåne wool, pine from the local lumber- man and linen from the last active weavery in Skåne. In this thesis I elaborate on the friction between profit-making, sustainability and consumerism and try to find answers to what production should look like in the future.
