The implementation of Outdoor Education in Luxembourgish primary schools : How do Luxembourgish primary school teachers implement Outdoor Education and which factors influence their implementation of Outdoor Education?

Lipperts, Julie January 2022 (has links)
The present study adopted a quantitative method to explore Luxembourgish primary school teachers' practices of Outdoor Education, as well as their knowledge and opinions on this pedagogical concept. Additionally, the influence of diverse environmental and personal factors on the teachers' implementation of Outdoor Education was investigated. In this regard, an online questionnaire with 19 questions related to Outdoor Education was administrated and published. 238 primary school teachers from Luxembourg took part in this online survey and answered questions about Outdoor Education practices, previous experiences in this field, nature relatedness, attitudes towards Outdoor Education, resources to teach outside, willingness as well as self-perceived competence to practice Outdoor Education and possible measures to foster Outdoor Education practices in Luxembourg. Findings revealed that, even though Luxembourgish primary school teachers seem to acknowledge the numerous benefits related to Outdoor Education, their Outdoor Education practices are relatively limited. In Luxembourg, Outdoor Education mostly takes place in schoolyards or nearby forests and is usually oriented towards natural sciences or physical education. Regarding the influence of personal and environmental factors, the teachers' previous experiences in the field of Outdoor Education, their attitude towards this pedagogical method and the available resources to teach outside seem to influence the frequency of Outdoor Education practices. Consequently, teachers with positive attitudes towards Outdoor Education, previous experiences in this field and material and infrastructures suitable for this purpose show tendencies to resort to teaching in an outdoor environment more frequently. The findings from the present study might be of advantage in order to prepare teachers more effectively to teach in outdoor environments and consequently foster the implementation of Outdoor Education in Luxembourg. / /

Lieux de prostitution : une analyse sociologique de la prostitution de rue à Luxembourg / Places of prostitution : a sociological analysis of street prostitution in the city of Luxembourg

Mayer, Sibylla 26 January 2012 (has links)
Based on a research about the places of street prostitution in Luxembourg City, this thesis offers an ethnography of its various situations without reducing prostitution to a mere sexual and monetary exchange. Through paying attention to the situations and interactions, to the constraints and resources with which people who prostitute themselves have to deal with, this work examines the places of prostitution under their human, social, material, spatio-temporal, regulatory and meaningful dimensions.Yet, to understand the place of prostitution in the city and in the society, it is necessary to call on a socio-historical perspective so as to reveal by what means the local populations, as early as the 1990s, contributed to the formation of a “prostitution problem” that required the intervention of the authorities, and primarily of the local governments. Its resolution by the authorities involved explanatory theories and moral judgments, and gave rise to diverse forms of public action. Finally, it is shown how imposing, on behalf of public order, a distinction between forbidden or authorized places for prostituting, and the entire balance of power passing through them, lead the people who prostitute themselves in the public space to continually renegotiate a local social order. Across the board, this thesis studies the social tensions that crystallize around the articulation between sexuality and money, on the one hand, and their social visibility, on the other hand.

Carpentier, Samuel 14 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Life in Immigration Detention Centers : An exploration of health of immigrant detainees in Sweden and three other EU member states

Puthoopparambil, Soorej Jose January 2016 (has links)
Governments around the world use immigration detention to detain and deport irregular immigrants, which negatively affects their health. The aim of this thesis was to explore, describe and identify factors that could mitigate the effect of immigration detention on the health of detainees. This was a mixed method study using qualitative methods (Papers I and II), quantitative methods (Paper III) and descriptive case comparison (Paper IV) comparing the Swedish system to the system in the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg). The study design was strengthened by triangulation of methods and data sources. Detainees experienced lack of control over their own lives due to lack of information in a language they can understand, inadequate responses from detention staff and restrictions within detention centers further limiting their liberty. Duration of detention was negatively associated with satisfaction of services provided in detention and the detainees’ Quality of Life (QOL). Detainees had low QOL domain scores with the psychological domain having the lowest score (41.9/100). The most significant factor positively associated with the QOL of detainees was the support received from detention staff. A sense of fear was present among detainees and staff. Detainees’ fear was due to their inadequate interaction with authorities, perceiving it as threatening, and due to their worry of facing repercussions of being involved in incidents caused by others. The potential for physical threat from detainees created a sense of fear among the staff. The detention staff expressed the need for more support to manage their emotional dilemma and role conflict of being a civil servant, simultaneously enabling the deportation process while providing humane care to detainees as fellow human beings. Detention centers in the Benelux countries had more categories of staff providing different services to detainees. Compared to the Benelux countries, healthcare services at the Swedish detention centers were limited. Detainees were offered no medical screening on arrival and no regular access to mental healthcare professionals. Detaining authorities have the obligation to safeguard the health of detainees. Challenges faced by the detention staff and detainees must be addressed to create a supportive environment and fulfill that obligation.

Epstein, David 26 June 2013 (has links) (PDF)
