This dissertation analyzes the structure and spatial characteristics on Mies van der Rohe´s work. The goal is to identify many structural strategies and systems throughout Rohe's work in order to understand their relationship with his spatial conception evolution. Two periods of Rohe's career were adopted as reference for this analysis: the European period, from 1906 to 1938, and the American period, from 1938 to 1968. In these periods, four structural stages were identified according to the structural and spatial systems used. The investigation focused on four of his key works: Barcelona Pavilion (1928), Crown Hall (1950), Seagram Building (1954) and Neuegalerie (1968).Understanding that the poetic element within the architect´s work - that from which structural and spatial concepts articulate - is its tectonic element, it was developed here the analysis of the convergence between the space and structural conceptions and the tectonics of the cited works. The dissertation finds that Mies van der Rohe - after 60 years of attempts, and structural spatial researches - achieved, during the 50s and 60s , the essence of his work: the structure as the spatial organizer of the building.

Nihilism, Art, and TechnologyWallenstein, Sven-Olov January 2010 (has links)
The thesis investigates the role of technology in the formation of the artistic avant-garde, along with various forms of philosophical reflection on this development, with a particular emphasis on Heidegger. Setting out from an analysis of three paradigmatic cases in the interplay between art and technology—the invention of photography, the shift from Futurism to Constructivism, and the interpretation of technology in debates on architectural theory in the 1920s and ’30s—it proceeds to a discussion of three philosophical responses to this development, those found in Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, and Ernst Jünger, all of which share a certain avant-garde sensibility and a notion of art as a response to nihilism. In Heidegger’s postwar writings we see a retreat from the positions of the mid 1930s, and in his reflections on technology a different answer emerges to the question of whether “great art” is still possible: great art is an art that exists precisely by making the founding of a world into something problematic. The fourth part confronts Heidegger’s analysis of technology with the work of an individual artist, the architect Mies van der Rohe, and asks how the “silence”—the withdrawal of language, sense, aesthetic perception, etc.—that is often understood as a precondition for the critical potential of his work should in fact be understood. By examining interpretations that draw on Heidegger via comparisons with other types of critical theory, a different understanding emerges of the relation among nihilism, art, and technology. They form a field of constant modulation, which implies that the concepts that have been the foundation of critical theory, nature, subjectivity, experience, even “being” in Heidegger’s sense, must be subjected to a historical analysis that acknowledges them as ongoing processes of construction, and that also accounts for the capacity of technologies and artistic practices to intervene in the formation of philosophical concepts. / The chapters 5, 6 and 7 in the monograph Essays, Lectures for a part of the Ph.D.thesis.

A sala bem temperada interior moderno e sensibilidade ecléticaPeixoto, Marta Silveira January 2006 (has links)
The interior design is a fundamental dimension of modern architecture that is interested in the disappearing of the barriers between the interior and exterior, in the space continuity, in the transparency, in the reduction of the walls and in the flexibility of the spaces; all that under the regency of a unique and harmonious spirit, led by the architect. This work, then, analyses the designs created for the rooms of some of the well-known houses produced specially between 1930 and 1950, and intends to establish the possible relations of this production among the contemporaries and from them with their historical antecedents. The starting point is the initial understanding that there are different ways of dealing with the presented subject. The insertion of this variable, the interior design, extends the spectrum of the analysis of modern architecture, enabling a more including and complete vision of its production, and also searches and organizes the material related to the subject. The option for the residential theme is a consequence of the importance it takes in the period, establishing itself as a preponderant program and valuable field of experimenting of ideas. The houses are those from the elite, not only economical, but also cultural, willing to sponsor and identify to the architectural avant guard, and the focus of the analysis falls on the social and representative rooms.

[en] MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN GERMANY: BETWEEN 1900 AND 1933 / [pt] ARQUITETURA MODERNA NA ALEMANHA: NO PERÍODO DE 1900 A 1933LUCIANE GONZAGA DE OLIVEIRA 20 May 2005 (has links)
Moderno. O período
estudado neste trabalho abrange os trinta anos iniciais do
século XX, até a chegada
dos Nazistas ao poder na Alemanha, em 1933. A Alemanha
Primeira Guerra
Mundial afetou toda a Europa e, principalmente, a Alemanha
derrotada,
indústria, a família, a vida humana individual e
passou a determinar o
[en] This dissertation aims at studying the German Modern
Architecture, the social,
political and economical conditions in which it was
developed, its theoretical
background and its participations in the Modern Movement.
The period of time
studied in this paper is the first thirty years of the 20th
century up to the moment when
the Nazis got the power over Germany in 1933. For sixty
years, Germany went
through wars and other important political changes. The
country was unified in 1870
and after the First World War it became a Democratic
Republic in 1918. Then, in
1933, it became a Dictatorship with the Nazi government.
The First World War
affected all Europe and mainly the defeated Germany
establishing a boundary in the
architectonic production. Besides the political
considerations, this moment shows
meaningful changes in science and technology which
influenced the economy, the
industry, the work relations, the family, the human life -
individual and collective, the
city, the daily objects - both household objects and also
the house itself. The
professionals of this time had to deal with a set of
conditions which would determine
the world from then on. These years where expressive in
Modern Architecture, not
only for the new ideas, but also for the practical
attitudes in relation to the
contemporary problems.

Müllerova vila verzus vila Tugendhatova - srovnání památkových obnov dvou modernistických objektů / Villa Müller versus Villa Tugendhat - A Comparison of Two Different Restoration Projects of Modernist BuildingsKsandr, Karel January 2014 (has links)
1 English abstract: Villa Müller versus Villa Tugendhat - A Comparison of Two Different Restoration Projects of Modernist Buildings. The work compares two successful restorations of interwar Czechoslovak avant-garde buildings realized between 1995 and 2012. At first, the respective histories of both buildings are compared since their creation through two totalitarian regimes up to their restoration. The fates of builders and architects of both villas are also described. From the point of view of historic preservation the work describes the state of both buildings before the commencement of restoration. The errors committed by the original designers are also described here. The methodology of restoration of both villas stemming from the professional points of view and relevant laws governing heritage protection is also treated in detail. The emphasis is given on preparation works preceding the design phase - the historic-structural survey, which, in both cases, was conceived as above-standard. Due to their span, these surveys have marked a key moment in relation to the modern cultural heritage within the Czech context. In the last part of the work links and comparisons are given to similar modern cultural heritage objects abroad. The work also documents the influence these two restorations have had on...

[fr] L ARCHITECTURE DE L ART: LE PARADOXE DANS LES MUSÉES D ART MODERNE / [pt] A ARQUITETURA DA ARTE: O PARADOXO NOS MUSEUS DE ARTE MODERNAMARIA CRISTINA NASCENTES CABRAL 30 June 2004 (has links)
[pt] O conceito de museu de arte moderna é paradoxal. A
segunda metade do século XX. Inicialmente, são estudados o
Museu do crescimento ilimitado de Le Corbusier, o Museu
York, do Museu Nacional de Arte Moderna, no Centro Georges
Pompidou, e do Museu Guggenheim de Bilbao.
