Mariante Neto, Flávio Py January 2016 (has links)
O programa escolhido foi o The Ultimate Fighter. / This work aims to understand symbolic aspects involved in the mixed martial arts fields. Out of a personal experience in the world of fighting, I have identify discourses about violence that pervade the concepts about the sport. Hence, I have constructed a log about the mixed martial arts and its relations within the society. Thereupon, I have chosen three basic elements from the context, for instance the gyms, the events and the media. In order to add a theoretical view to this phenomenon, I have used the Civilizing Process Theory from Norbert Elias. From this rationale, and the identification of the mixed martial arts discourses, has come up the research question which has the intention to better understand how a sport’s category, with such a strong discourse of violence, can established itself socially. To answer the question, the theoretical and methodological presuppositions were based on an Elisian configurational view. An ethnographic observation has been conducted in MMA practice studios in Porto Alegre, in the country side of Rio Grande do Sul and in other parts of Brazil. On top of that, observation was carried out based on the TUF Brasil programme in order to analyse the media. The data collected has resulted in three chapters of findings. The first chapter shows the training routine of the MMA fighters, the technics used, the different kinds of training modality and the symbolic elements such as “training brother” and “family”. In this topic, is also shown the meaning of violence in that context and which control mechanisms are in place to build up a fighter The second chapter discuss the process of big performances and shows related to MMA. Beginning with the process of losing weight in the gym, going forward on the day of stepping up on the scale, the relation with the sponsors, with the promoters of those big events and the relation with the opponent. In this chapter are presented the structures that form a mixed martial art’s event such as the announcer, the preliminary card, the main card and the reaction of the audience during the fights. Again, the violence is argue as an observational data. The control mechanisms such as the bleeding control of the athlete and the ban of elbow nudges in some events are examples of promoters’ strategies to refrain from the idea of pure violence but to enforce the concept of sport. In the last chapter, similar strategies are discuss when showing the results of the data. The chosen programme was ‘The Ultimate Fighter’. The first part of the topic attempt to present the training routine of each team, the relation of each fight modality and the relation with the coaches. Following the rationale, I then present all the ‘drama’ broadcasted by the TV programme in a process named by me as ‘humanise the fighter’. I then present the family relationship, the drama of the injuries and the relation with the professional environment of the MMA. Thus, to conclude, MMA is pervaded by control mechanisms that are materialised on the gyms, during the events and by the media. Hence, the sport maintain itself from the tensions and redirections in the sense of generating a pleasant tension and excitement in all individuals.

Ett företag i det socialt oacceptabla / A company in the socially unacceptable

NIMANI, GEZIM, PERSSON, JOAKIM January 2011 (has links)

The body in pain and pleasure : an ethnography of mixed martial arts

Stenius, Magnus January 2015 (has links)
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a sport on the rise within the field of martial arts in which competitors fight in a cage and utilize full-contact movements using their fists, elbows, and knees as well as kicks, other strikes, and submission techniques to defeat their opponents. MMA has become a modern social movement in combat sports that has become globalized in a short time and is the fastest growing sport in the world. MMA encompasses disciplines from various martial arts and Olympic sports such as boxing, kickboxing, karate, kempo, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, tae kwon do, wrestling, sambo, judo, etc. The rounds are five minutes in length and there are typically three rounds in a contest, unless it is a championship fight in which case the contest lasts five rounds. The aim of this study is to analyze the bodily constructions and productions within the MMA culture and especially the constructed human violence associated with the sport. Based on autoethnographic participation in three Swedish MMA clubs, as well as shorter fieldwork case studies conducted in Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Brazil, and the US, this thesis investigates the interrelationship between MMA, excitement, sensationalism, and the spectacular physical violence that stains the participants’ bodies. Concepts taken from performance ethnography are applied to an analysis of what is reconstructed bodily. This is followed by an analysis that attempts to outline what body-violence means and how this understanding of the informants’ bodies, as well as of the researcher’s body-knowledge, reconstructs the definitions of MMA. A phenomenological approach to the concept of fighting is also included in relation to the MMA landscape. Thus, I present how the body learns the cultural enactments in fighting and how these forces shape the fighters’ gender, habitus, and way of resisting the discourse of critical opinions on MMA practice. Moreover, in trying to grasp the inner sense of MMA, I argue that the physical phenomenon of MMA is dependent on an intersubjective engagement and on the control of one’s inner coordination, which teaches a fighter how to deal with power, pain, suffering, aggression, and adrenaline flows.   Keywords: abject, adrenaline, anthropology, athletes, autoethnography, body, combat arts, culture, desire, embodied, enculturation, ethnology, fieldwork, field-making, flow, fighting, full-contact, gender, harm, homosociality, intercultural, interobject, intersubjectivity, martial arts, materiality, masculinity, MMA, method, pain, personal, performance, performativity, phenomenology, pleasure, posthuman, postmodern, power, ritual, risk-taking, rush, self-reflexive, sportive, sport, stained, struggle, suffering, thrill, UFC, violence.

EPIGENETIC REMODELING DURING ARSENICAL-INDUCED MALIGNANT TRANSFORMATION

Jensen, Taylor Jacob January 2008 (has links)
Humans are exposed to arsenicals through many routes with the most common being drinking water. Exposure to arsenic has been associated with an increased incidence of skin, lung, liver, prostate, and bladder cancer. Although the relationship between arsenic exposure and carcinogenesis is well documented, the mechanisms by which arsenic participates in tumorigenesis are not fully elucidated. We evaluated the potential epigenetic component of arsenical action by assessing the histone acetylation and DNA methylation state of 13,000 human gene promoters in a cell line model of arsenical-mediated malignant transformation. We show changes in histone H3 acetylation and DNA methylation occur during arsenical-induced malignant transformation, each of which is linked to the expression state of the associated gene. These epigenetic changes occurred non-randomly and targeted common promoters whether the selection was performed with arsenite [As(III)] or with the As(III) metabolite monomethylarsonous acid [MMA(III)]. The epigenetic alterations of these promoters and associated malignant phenotypes were stable after the removal of the transforming arsenical. One of the affected regions was the promoter of WNT5A. This gene is transcriptionally activated during arsenical induced malignant transformation and its promoter region exhibited alterations in each of the four histone modifications examined which were linked to its transcriptional activation. Experimental reduction of WNT5A transcript levels resulted in abrogated anchorage independent growth, suggesting a participative role for the epigenetic remodeling of this promoter region in arsenical-induced malignant transformation. Taken together, these data suggest that arsenicals may participate in tumorigenesis by stably altering the DNA methylation and histone modifications associated with targeted genes, uncovering a likely set of participative genes and representing a mechanism to potentially explain the latency associated with arsenic-induced malignancy.

Catalytic chain transfer polymerisation in C02-expanded monomers

Zwolak, Grzegorz, Chemical Sciences & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
Experimental data on the solubility of CO2 in methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl methacrylate (BMA) are reported at temperatures from 308 to 333 K and pressures in the range of 1 to 10 MPa. The corresponding measurements of the volumetric expansion of the liquid phase are also presented. The solubility data are correlated with the Peng-Robinson equation of state using two interaction parameters. Solubilities of CO2 as high as 80 mol% can be attained in both monomers in the range of pressure considered. A near-linear relationship is observed between pressure and liquid-phase composition. The Peng-Robinson equation of state provides a satisfactory correlation of the solubility data. The average absolute relative deviations with respect to the calculated values of pressure are less than 2%. For a given monomer, the expansion isotherms coincide when plotted as a function of the liquid - phase composition. Catalytic chain transfer (CCT) polymerisation of CO2-expanded MMA, BMA and styrene is then described. Experimental values of the chain transfer constant are determined at 323 K and 333 K and in the range of pressure from 0.1 to 6 MPa. A cobaloxime complex is used as the chain transfer catalyst. The effect of small quantities of polymer on the volumetric expansion of the corresponding monomer is considered. The chain transfer constants for the expanded monomers are significantly higher than those obtained in the bulk monomers. It is demonstrated that a linear relationship exists between the chain transfer rate coefficient and the inverse of liquid-phase viscosity. These results provide significant evidence that the rate-determining step in the CCT process is diffusion-controlled. Finally, molecular weight evolution in CCT polymerization of CO2-expanded MMA is reported. Experimental molecular weight and polydispersity index data are presented at 323 K in the range of conversion from 1 to 25%, and at pressures of 5 and 6 MPa. Both molecular weight and polydispersity increase with conversion at conditions below the homogeneous expansion limit. Predici simulations suggest that either irreversible catalyst deactivation or cobalt-carbon bond formation is the most likely mechanism for the increase in molecular weight with conversion.
