Mlýn na mumie jako postmoderní utopie magické Prahy / Mummy Mill - a Postmodern Utopia of Magical Prague

This very writing is examining the two ultimate books "Mlýn na mumie" from the talented Petr Stančík, and "Sedmikostelí" and "Lord Mord" from the extremely obscure Miloš Urban. The main and most significant purpose of this work is to find and distinguish characteristics of each author, diving deeper into their unique styles, finding possible similarities while trying to learn about one of the very few raw original writing styles. Despite the books being multi-genre, they do try to characterize the exact genres along the way, after a proper introduction of the authors themselves, of course. The genres appearing in these books are clearly shown in individual excerpts below original text. A dominant part of my work is an analysis of the time space and the main character or hero if you prefer - again shown in excerpts as key parts of novels. Towards the end you can find the so-called great myth of the nation as a frequently repeated topic. By the conclusion of this work is a final comparison of previous analyses.

Magistro darbe „Mirties įvaizdis Sauliaus Tomo Kondroto romane „Ir apsiniauks žvelgiantys pro langą“ (1985) analizuojama mirties tema lietuvių prozoje. Remiantis Vakarų kultūrologijoje ir tanatologijoje susiformavusia mirties samprata, yra ginamas teiginys, kad šiame romane sukurtas literatūrinis (estetinis) mirties įvaizdis, kuris gali pristatyti skaitytojui visuminę mirties pajautą ir praplėsti bei pagilinti kultūrologinę (mitologinę, religinę ir filosofinę) mirties fenomeno interpretaciją. XX a. lietuvių prozoje mirtis yra viena svarbiausių jos tematikos krypčių. Darbo objektu pasirinktame S. T. Kondroto romane mirties įvaizdis yra kūrinio siužeto epicentras ir išeities taškas kuriant kitus literatūrinius įvaizdžius, simbolius, metaforas. Romane vartojama magiškojo realizmo poetika, kuri literatūriniam mirties įvaizdžiui romane „Ir apsiniauks žvelgiantys pro langą“ suteikia kasdieniškumo pobūdį, „paprasto stebuklo“ įspūdį. Analizė atskleidžia literatūros kūrinyje atsirandantį meninį mirties įvaizdį ir jo aspektus, kurie praplečia ir pagilina mitinę, religinę ir filosofinę mirties interpretaciją. Darbe aiškinamasi, kodėl mirties įvaizdžio šiame romane analizė leidžia pereiti prie gilesnių laisvės, valdžios, diktatūros ir kitų klausimų tyrinėjimų, be to, padeda suvokti romano meninės raiškos priemones. / The Masters Research presented is based on the impressions of death in the novel ”Ir apsiniauks žvelgiantys pro langą” (The Devouring Gaze of the Window Lookers), published 1985. The research presents an analysis of the theme of death in Lithuanian literature as written by Saulius Tomas Kondrotas. In the XX Century, the theme and analysis of death in Lithuanian literature is a main focus. Western literature, as presented in the book, with its thanatology and perception of death is often conceptionalized with an incomplete impression of thanatology focusing on saving, protecting and keeping alive in its cultural values, philosophy and theology. For the purpose of this study, analysing the novel of S.T. Kondrotas was selected as death is the epicenter of its theme. In the book Magic Realism as an art form is used as a means of expression. In the novel plain, simple, miracles of ordinary daily life are absolutely essential . In the novel, the meaning of death is expanded by the use of myths, religion, and philosophy to extend and broaden its perception. Death’s impression in the analysis of the book deepens the knowledge of government control, dictatorship, and freedom with the questions this poses. Forms of art presented as Magic Realism in the book assist the reader in understanding what the book intends to reveal. "Theatre of the dancing language" : new possibilities in contemporary Australian playwrighting

This study focuses on trends in contemporary Australian playwrighting, discussing recent investigations into the playwrighting process. The study analyses the current state of this country’s playwrighting industry, with a particular focus on programming trends since 1998. It seeks to explore the implications of this current theatrical climate, in particular the types of work most commonly being favoured for production. It argues that Australian plays are under-represented (compared to non-Australian plays) on ‘mainstream’ stages and that audiences might benefit from more challenging modes of writing than the popular three-act realist play models. The thesis argues that ‘New Lyricism’ might fill this position of offering an innovative Australian playwrighting mode. New Lyricism is characterised by a set of common aesthetics, including a non-linear narrative structure, a poetic use of language and magic realism. Several Australian playwrights who have adopted this mode of writing are identified and their works examined. The author’s play Floodlands is presented as a case study and the author’s creative process is examined in light of the published critical discussions about experimental playwriting work.

Problématique de l'autre : écriture et peinture haïtiennes en question / Problematic to the otherness : Haitian writing and painting in question

Les premiers discours sur l’art en Haïti ont été envisagés à partir de la question de l’autre. Il s’agissait de savoir comment la littérature aiderait à définir une identité haïtienne. Ce travail interroge la littérature et la peinture sur la problématique de l’autre, l’autre du dedans, où l’altérité se joue entre les membres d’une même société. Les productions artistiques et culturelles populaires sont analysées à travers le prisme de l’art naïf qui est à la base de la réflexion sur le rapport entre littérature et peinture. Dans un premier temps, les représentations du monde rural par le mouvement indigéniste sont explorées dans les discours littéraires et picturaux, afin de voir si la pratique a su répondre aux objectifs théoriques énoncés par les penseurs du mouvement. Dans un second temps, le dialogue entre la littérature et peinture est traité à partir de plusieurs points de vue : culturel, social, esthétique, en nous appuyant sur les romans suivants, La contrainte de l’inachevé d’Anthony Phelps, L’Énigme du retour de Dany Laferrière et Yanvalou pour Charly de Lyonel Trouillot. Tandis qu’en peinture nos analyses se réfèrent aux toiles de André Normil, Wilson Bigaud, Wilbert Laurent ou Pétion Savain, entre autres. / The first writings on art in Haiti were based on the questioning of otherness - the aim was to know how literature could help define a Haitian identity. This dissertation uses literature and painting to explore this issue of otherness – an otherness inside, in which otherness lies between the members of a same society. The popular artistic and cultural productions are analyzed through the perspective of Naïve Art which gives birth to this reflection on the interaction between literature and painting. The representations of the rural world by the indigenous movement are first explored in literary and pictorial works, in order to see if practice could match the theoretical objectives established by the thinkers of the movement. The dialogue between literature and painting is then explored through several perspectives – cultural, social, esthetic ones, while studying the following novels, La contrainte de l’inachevé by Anthony Phelps, L’Énigme du retour by Dany Laferrière and Yanvalou pour Charly by Lyonel Trouillot. In painting, our analyses notably refer to the works of André Normil, Wilson Bigaud, Wilbert Laurent or Pétion Savain among others.

Além disso, comentamos algumas significações alegóricas em relação ao contexto histórico da narrativa, que remete na realidade ao século XX, época em que Calvino viveu e sobre a alegoria do intelectual Cosme a partir da sua mudança de ponto de vista sobre as árvores, que induzem a reflexão pela necessidade da valorização da educação e pela... / This thesis aims to analyze the novel Il barone rampante, which is part of the trilogy I nostri Antenati (1950-1960), who are also gathered in the novels Il visconte dimezzato and Il cavaliere inesistente by Italo Calvino (1923-1985).We analyze at first, some factors that influenced the writing calviniana, as movements of Resistance in Italy, aimed at fighting against the atrocities of the First and Second World War and fascism, but also some characteristics of the structure of the fable, which can be study identified the novel, from the attitudes of benefactor of Cosme which qualify as a hero, which goes through many hardships and struggles in favor of good all in common. In the second part of the dissertation, we noted some historical references made in the novel, about the French Revolution and the Enlightenment and their points of intersection with the historical context in which Calvino lived, involving wars and movements of great impact and repression as fascism, nazism and socialism; terms of actual areas and historical institutions and references to historical figures as Napoleon, Rousseau, Diderot, and others. At the end of the dissertation, we point out certain features that bring Il barone rampante variety of metaphysical magic realism, for example, the decision of the protagonist, Cosme living on trees, and other events. In addition, we discuss some allegorical meanings in relation to the historical context of the narrative which actually refers to the twentieth century, a period in which Calvin lived and about allegory of the intellectual Cosme from his change of view on the trees, which lead to reflection by need for enhancement of education and the maintenance of hope in human progress and technology to living in a more just and egalitarian society. The language of dreams : a study of transcultural magical realism in four postcolonial texts.

This research provides an analytical reading of four contemporary novels, in a transcultural study of magical realism and dreams. Two of the novels, Ben Okri's The Famished Road and its sequel Songs of Enchantment, examine dreams through magical realism in postcolonial African literature. The third novel, Toni Morrison's Beloved, is used to depict the use of memory within an African-American magical realist novel. And the fourth narrative is Irvine Welsh's Marabou Stork Nightmares, which focuses on the use of hallucination within what can be seen as a magical realist mode. The analysis of these novels examines certain aspects of magical realism, including the use of the subconscious, focusing primarily on dream, memory and hallucination. In examining this topic, I aim to suggest that the use of the subconscious, within this literature, allows the writer to comment on a particular society. As can be seen in previous studies of magical realism, the writer is able to express his or her dissatisfaction with society by destabilising conventionally accepted truths. A writer can therefore convey a sense that the surface of a particular culture or society is a facade, disguising certain hidden truths, which require a more in depth examination, in order to more fully understand the workings behind that society. The subconscious works to reveal these hidden realities, and is therefore a mode of resistance in that it allows the writers an avenue through which to express their dissatisfaction with their particular society. This is achieved through the exploring and deconstruction of certain boundaries within the novels which, along with several other factors, essentially concords the magical realism inherent in these texts. It is additionally enhanced through the use of the device of the subconscious, which allows the writers to transgress borders, and further explore their particular cultures. Through the use of novels from various contemporary societies, I hope to establish the fact that the subconscious, and therefore magical realism, is a transcultural technique, in that it traverses a multitude of cultures, without being specific to any one in particular. The Floating World - An investigation into illustrative and decorative art practices and theory in print media and animation.

Considered under the theme 'The Floating World', the aim of this research project was to create a written exegesis and a series of artworks, primarily in the form of digital animation and illustration, which investigate decorative and illustrative art practices and their historical lineages. Particular emphasis was given to investigating the links between contemporary decorative/illustrative art practice and the aesthetics and psychology of the Edo period in Japan (C17th - C19th), in which the term 'The Floating World' was used to describe the city of Edo (old Tokyo). The writing concerned with The Floating World is comprised of the following chapters: history; concepts; aesthetics; contemporary adaptations of Ukiyo-e; and gothic romance and associated genres. The outcomes of my Masters program represent a sustained exploration of decorative and illustrative art practice and theory, and incorporate experimentation with associated genres such as magic realism, gothic romance, the uncanny, iconography, surrealism and other metaphorical and abstract representational practices. More broadly, my Masters project is an investigation, both theoretical and practical, into the way drawing and illustration have been a process through which to (literally) give shape to hopes and fears, and to describe understandings of self and the world. I am particularly interested in exploring how, through the act of abstraction and the use of metaphor and decoration, a capacity to 'speak the unspeakable' and 'know the unknowable' are somehow enabled. For example, when contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami decorates Edo-inspired screens with a colourful arrangement of morphing cartoon mushrooms, he conjures up a startling and complex poetic space that juxtaposes traditional Japanese aesthetics and philosophy with the hyper-consumerist characters and ethos of Disneyland, as well as disquieting references to the mushroom bombs that dropped down on Hiroshima and Nagasaki from US planes. A similarly complex space is enacted by contemporary US artist Inka Essenhigh: her oversized canvases seem like sublime Japanese-inspired screens but a closer inspection reveals that the decorative motifs are actually dismembered body parts morphed together to create a savage and compelling metaphor for contemporary America that is all the more disarming for being perf ormed in a seemingly innocuous illustrative style. My research will draw on these examples but will endeavour to create a series of artworks that are particular to an Australian context. This interests me particularly in a time when, as a nation, we appear to be confounded about what it means to be Australian: as a contemporary artist I am interested in how we represent ourselves as a nation, and in exploring the motifs and attributes that we consider to be ours.

I would like to present the latest novel by Said Ahmed Mohamed, Babu alipofofuka (\'When Grandfather came to life again\'), published at the end of the last year. The mine will be only a first, preliminary and very inadequate attempt as, I am sure, this work will challenge us for quite a few years. In fact, after five realistic novels the author has adopted a new technique, turning to magic realism as he himself defines his work, but perhaps it is a too limitative definition. He depicts our world in a near future, when Tanzania and other African countries will have already undergone the process of globalization. The results are disastrous: impoverished and dulled masses are governed by a handful of immensely rich, powerful and arrogant persons mostly of foreign origin, deprived of all human qualities, who have thrown away any inhibition and deliberately sunk in all sorts of physical and moral debasement; nothing embarrasses nor frightens them anymore as they feel unpunishable.

The diploma thesis "The Return of the Baroque in Hispano-American Novel of the 20th Century - Asturias, Carpentier, Roa Bastos" examines Baroque motifs and principles in the modern 20th century Hispanic-American novel. It explains how these traits alter in contrast to the historical Baroque, how they are modified or what other functions they acquire. An attempt was made to critically rethink and re-evaluate the literary theories dealing with the reappearance of the Baroque in Hispanic America, as we consider their approach to be generalising and reductive. The interpretative method is based on Josef Vojvodík's Povrch, skrytost a ambivalence and namely how it addresses the manner in which the Baroque, Mannerism and avant-garde relate to one another. A characterisation of the American Baroque as such has been drafted and an attempt to capture the differences between the European Baroque has been made. The essayistic work of Alejo Carpentier is treated with an emphasis on the relationship of the (Neo)Baroque and magic realism. Carpentier wrongly attributes to the continent what he installs through his own optics without realising that such an approach might be itself described as being Baroque.
