The Unfixedness of It

My drawings contemplate the unfixed nature of my experience. I draw from a state of uncertainty about the relationship between self and space, between a moment of experience and the one that follows it. My process involves intuitive mark-making in which instances of perception are indeterminate and discontinuous. I draw from the experience of unhinged moments, from silence and stillness, and from the indefinable, inarticulable, interstitial moments of perception between those that can be concretely described. The immediacy of drawing, the direct engagement with the mark on the surface, is central to my work. Intuitive mark-making is a way of engaging as directly as possible with the indeterminate nature of my experience. As the drawn marks allude to a once-fleeting present, the layers of marks interact to remind me of the non-linear nature of time and the unfixed nature of experience. The making of the mark punctuates a fragment of experience, dividing it into before and after the mark. The esoteric nature of drawing, the variety of marks engaging on and within the surface, the ethereal traces, the engagement with the space implied by the panel, the discontinuities revealed between adjacent drawings on panel, and the implied experience compressed in the seams between the panels address multiple and unresolveable ways of experiencing a moment in a space.

The Sustainability of EU Trade mark law : A research into the degree to which EU Trade mark law is tailored to achieve the EU Sustainable Development Goals

The EU Sustainable Development Goals have long been a resemblance of the urgent call forclimate action and sustainable development. With increasing attention for climate change anda subsequent call for action from states, consumers’ preferences have now also changedtowards opting for sustainable goods and services. The fact that sustainability has becomeincreasingly important to consumers has not gone unnoticed by manufacturers and sellers ofgoods and services. Consequently, trade marks are increasingly used to label goods asenvironmentally sound and to create a sustainable image. With trade marks, certification marksand geographical indications being a valuable source of information, capable ofcommunicating this green reputation, there is also a significant risk of consumer deceptionthrough greenwashing. Nevertheless, trade mark law is used as a means of fosteringsustainable development. Consequently, trade mark law is concerned with sustainability. Thisbegs the question to what degree EU trade mark law is tailored to achieve the EU SustainableDevelopment Goals. To answer this question, a thorough assessment is made of the currentlegal framework of EU trade mark law. Multiple aspects of this system are discussed with afocus on descriptive and deceptive marks, as well as the right to repair, certification marks andgeographical indications. The assessment comprises of a look into the influence on sustainabledevelopment, together with the discerning of shortcomings in the way the respective aspectsof EU trade mark law can add to the achievability of the EU Sustainable Development Goals.After the individual assessments it is argued that there are multiple points of improvement.Further, solutions are introduced to remedy these points of improvement. In specific, aguideline including a non-exhaustive list of terms that should be avoided when registering atrade mark, CJEU recognition of sustainability as a characteristic through which the public canbe deceived and the introduction of sustainable production standards for EU certificationmarks and GIs, possibly through governmentally issued certification marks and GIs, are the keyimprovements of the EU trade mark regulatory system to improve the achievability of the SDGs.It is concluded that EU trade mark law is to a great extent tailored to achieve the EU SustainableDevelopment Goals, but that with the help of the suggested remedies, EU trade mark law canbecome a true catalyst of sustainable development.

The project shows one of the possible solutions, which takes into account keeping part of the archeological findings in this locality and its access to the public. As the building would be located on the banks of the river Bečva, organic materials have been suggested for the building, which would harmonize with the river and the town.

The Enduring Mythological Role of the Anonymous Source Deep Throat

Deep Throat is one of the most famous anonymous newspaper sources in American journalism. He is known for helping Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon's impeachment and resignation in 1974. Deep Throat's identity was a source of curiosity until he was revealed in 2005 as the former number two figure at the FBI, William Mark Felt. This thesis will show that, despite Felt's notoriety, Deep Throat was not an indispensable part of Woodward and Bernstein's Watergate coverage, speaking with Woodward 16 times about Watergate during the reporters' coverage. Deep Throat was important to the Watergate story because he kept it alive. Deep Throat inspired numerous publications, which all served to create his mythic status. Many attempted to guess his true identity, although Woodward and Bernstein refused to confirm most guesses. An enduring Deep Throat legacy is that his nickname has become synonymous with deep background - a source that cannot be quoted or named. There was no clear consensus as to how people felt about Felt's role as Deep Throat. There were many negative and positive reactions when he revealed himself. His family sided with him; Nixon associates were unhappy with him. However, more than 30 years after the Watergate scandal, Deep Throat was still big news. No matter what people thought about him, they paid attention and they knew the story.

Analyses of Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) Translocation Release Methods and Chick Survival in Strawberry Valley, Utah

Manuscript No. 1 Recent research has indicated that low nest success and juvenile survival of Greater Sage-Grouse may be responsible for population declines. Recent technological advances in micro-transmitters have made radio-telemetry studies on Sage-Grouse chicks more common. Radio-telemetry enables monitoring of individual chicks and broods during a critical period of their life history. The exact cause of low chick recruitment in Strawberry Valley has not been well understood. In 2006, a chick mortality study using micro-transmitters was initiated to (1) determine the causes of chick mortality, (2) calculate overall chick survival, (3) compare chick survival in the Strawberry Valley population to published reports, (4) monitor brood movements, and (5) suggest management strategies for mitigation of chick mortality. Survival data on radio-marked chicks were analyzed using a known fate model in program MARK. Chick survival in Strawberry Valley was greater than all reported estimates from other studies. Our study did not identify any unsuspected causes of chick mortality, and the cumulative effect of stressing chicks, hens, and broods was not deemed worth the benefit, especially in a population recovery setting like Strawberry Valley. We do not recommend the use of radio-telemetry on Sage-Grouse chicks in recovering or sensitive populations. Manuscript No. 2 In 2003, we began translocating Greater Sage-Grouse into the Strawberry Valley of central Utah, in an attempt to recover the dwindling population found therein. Prior to 2006 all translocated Sage-Grouse were released within 250 m of the only active lek in Strawberry Valley while males were actively strutting. A prolonged winter in 2006 delayed normal lekking activity in Strawberry Valley. As a result 61 (59%) of the 103 sage-grouse translocated in 2006 were not released near an active lek. We analyzed the influence that release timing, hen age, body mass, and source population had on mortality, flocking, and dispersal distance of translocated hens in 2006. We found that mortality and flocking rates were not influenced by release timing, hen age, body mass, or source population. Dispersal distances for hens released near a lek with actively strutting males were significantly less than distances of hens released near an inactive lek. We believe that releasing translocated Sage-Grouse near a lek with actively strutting males is an essential technique for Greater Sage-Grouse translocations. We recommend that other Sage-Grouse translocation efforts employ this method to increase the likelihood of success.

Location-Allocation Optimization of Supply Chain Distribution Networks: A Case Study

The location of distribution centers is an important strategic decision in supply chain design, particularly as it relates to service quality, productivity, and profitability of the firm. There has been extensive research performed on distribution location models which require the use of complex algorithms and assumptions that make use of these models difficult in practice for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have limited capital and resources. Studies have also failed to capture and quantify potential business results of using more sophisticated methods. In this study, a deterministic and static location-allocation model is designed using a prototype software tool. The tool is a collection of Excel/VBA programs formulated as a mixed integer programming (MIP) model. Research was done in conjunction with a personal care products company that provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the manual methods typically used in SMEs with the results of the software tool and the potential business impact. Both quantitative data, including customer locations and order information, as well as qualitative data were collected from the company. A total of five models were simulated using the prototype software tool, including one model of the current supply chain for use as a base comparison, and four future-state models of potential distribution center (DC) location scenarios. The objective in each of these models was to minimize transportation costs while maintaining the desired service fulfillment levels. The use of the prototype software tool resulted in a more optimal supply chain solution. The optimized DC location resulted in a network design with a 6.5% reduction in transportation costs from the base model, and a 0.8% reduction in transportation costs from a location previously chosen by the company. The results also provided insight into considering weighted shipping volume in location analysis as it can serve as a magnifier of business impact and rapid diminishing returns when shipping product below an average of 10 pounds. The use of an optimization tool was shown to mitigate many issues SMEs encounter in attempting to synthesize multiple variables in the DC location problem.

Characterization Of An Inline Row Impingement Channel For Turbine Blade Cooling Applications

Gas turbines have become an intricate part of today's society. Besides powering practically all 200,000+ passenger aircraft in use today, they are also a predominate form of power generation when coupled with a generator. The fact that they are highly efficient, and capable of large power to weight ratios, makes gas turbines an ideal solution for many power requirement issues faced today. Designers have even been able to develop small, micro-turbines capable of producing efficient portable power. Part of the turbine's success is the fact that their efficiency levels have continuously risen since their introduction in the early 1800's. Along with improvements in our understanding and designs of the aerodynamic components of the turbine, as well as improvements in the areas of material design and combustion control, advances in component cooling techniques have predominantly contributed to this success. This is the result of a simple thermodynamic concept; as the turbine inlet temperature is increased, the overall efficiency of the machine increases as well. Designers have exploited this fact to the extent that modern gas turbines produce rotor inlet temperatures beyond the melting point of the sophisticated materials used within them. This has only been possible through the use of sophisticated cooling techniques, particularly in the 1st stage vanes and blades. Some of the cooling techniques employed today have been internal cooling channels enhanced with various features, film and showerhead cooling, as well as internal impingement cooling scenarios. Impingement cooling has proven to be one of the most capable heat removal processes, and the combination of this cooling feature with that of channel flow, as is done in impingement channel cooling, creates a scenario that has understandably received a great deal of attention in recent years. This study has investigated several of the unpublished characteristics of these impingement channels, including the channel height effects on the performance of the channel side walls, effects of bulk temperature increase on heat transfer coefficients, circumferential heat variation effects, and effects on the uniformity of the heat transfer distribution. The main objectives of this dissertation are to explore the various previously unstudied characteristics of impingement channels, in order to sufficiently predict their performance in a wide range of applications. The potential exists, therefore, for a designer to develop a blade with cooling characteristics specifically tailored to the expected component thermal loads. Temperature sensitive paint (TSP) is one of several non-intrusive optical temperature measurements techniques that have gained a significant amount of popularity in the last decade. By employing the use of TSP, we have the ability to provide very accurate (less than 1 degree Celsius uncertainty), high resolution full-field temperature measurements. This has allowed us to investigate the local heat transfer characteristics of the various channel surfaces under a variety of steady state testing conditions. The comparison of thermal performance and uniformity for each impingement channel configuration then highlights the benefits and disadvantages of various configurations. Through these investigations, it has been shown that the channel side walls provide heat transfer coefficients comparable to those found on the target surface, especially at small impingement heights. Although the side walls suffer from highly non-uniform performance near the start of the channel, the profiles become very uniform as the cross flow develops and becomes a dominating contributor to the heat transfer coefficient. Increases in channel height result in increased non-uniformity in the streamwise direction and decreased heat transfer levels. Bulk temperature increases have also been shown to be an important consideration when investigating surfaces dominated by cross flow heat transfer effects, as enhancements up to 80% in some areas may be computed. Considerations of these bulk temperature changes also allow the determination of the point at which the flow transitions from an impingement dominated regime to one that is dominated by cross flow effects. Finally, circumferential heat variations have proven to have negligible effects on the calculated heat transfer coefficient, with the observed differences in heat transfer coefficient being contributed to the unaccounted variations in channel bulk temperature.

Updating The Classics: An Actor's Approach To Portraying Dickensian Characters In A Modern Script

The focus of this thesis is my performance in the play The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge by Mark Brown. I will research and perform the role of The Ghost of Christmas Past, a role which also plays the parts of Fan and Belle from Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. I shall perform in The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, in Partnership with UCF in December 2008 as a part of their 2008-2009 Signature Series season. The main focus of this thesis is the exploration of how to create a performance of a classical character for a modern audience. I hope to maintain the integrity of Dickens's characters written in 1843, while performing in a contemporary script written by Mark Brown in 2004. My performance and research question is how to successfully communicate Brown's version of the story and still keep the spirit of the Dickensian characters as they were first written. I aim to discover and address the problems that may arise in combining the two versions of the characters. I will begin with my belief that contemporary humor and storytelling balanced with the essence of the classic characters that audiences may remember from the novel or other versions of this story will give the most effective, rich performance. Playwright Mark Brown strives for this balance in his script and my research for the role will focus on finding elements in my performance that satisfy both elements. My research will include deep examination of Fan, Belle, and the Ghost of Christmas Past, as they appear in both Dickens' novel A Christmas Carol and in The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge. I will look at different interpretations of the characters in the many stage and film versions of this story that have been created since the original to investigate how others have attempted to update or recreate the roles for their audiences. My research will also include an interview with the playwright for insight about his process of integrating old with new. My written thesis will include the findings of my research and preparation, a detailed rehearsal and performance journal, and extensive analysis of my discoveries, all of which will hopefully lead to a conclusive and useful approach for portraying contemporary characters derived from classical literature.
