Fotografia: Entre Fato e Farsa (URSS - Itália, 1928-1934) / -

Clara de Freitas Figueiredo 06 April 2018 (has links)
The present research emerged from the perception of intersections in the language field between the Exhibition of Fascist Revolution (Rome, 1932-1934) and the Soviet Pavilion at the International Press Exhibition (Cologne, 1928). These intersections - strengthened and substantiated by concrete interactions between Fascist and Stalinist hierarchs - lead also to a research, based in selected visual material, about common problems for both regimes such as a catch-up industrialization, production expansion and the cult of the leader´s personality. In this sense, Antonio Gramsci\'s reflections on the notion of \"passive revolution\" and Walter Benjamin\'s on the \"aestheticization of politics\" emerged as fundamental critical-theoretical contributions. In short, the aim of this doctoral research was to analyse and reflect about the protagonism of photography as an instrument for symbolic reproduction and domination, both in the Fascist Italy and in the Stalinist URSS.

Space In-Between: Masumura Yasuzo, Japanese New Wave, and Mass Culture Cinema / Masumura Yasuzo, Japanese New Wave, and Mass Culture Cinema

Terry, Patrick Alan, 1984- 06 1900 (has links)
viii, 111 p. : ill. (some col.) / During the early stage of Japan's High Economic Growth Period (1955-1970), a group of directors and films, labeled the Japanese New Wave, emerged to strong critical acclaim and scholarly pursuit. Over time, Japanese New Wave Cinema has come to occupy a central position within the narrative history of Japanese film studies. This position has helped introduce many significant films while inadvertently ostracizing or ignoring the much broader landscape of film at this time. This thesis seeks to complexify the New Wave's central position through the career of Daiei Studios' director, Masumura Yasuzo. Masumura signifies a "space in-between" the cultural elite represented by the New Wave and the box office focus of mass culture cinema. Utilizing available English language and rare Japanese sources, this thesis will re-examine Masumura's position on the periphery of film studies while highlighting the larger film environment of this dynamic period. / Committee in charge: Prof. Steven Brown, Chair; Dr. Daisuke Miyao, Advisor

Judging contemporary art in the mass media. The assessment criteria in the newcast and on the Internet between 2007 and 2011

Legrand, Thomas 12 December 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to identify criteria to understand how contemporary artworks make sense in public space. When conflict of opinions happen, protagonists are led to rise in generality to justify their point of view, which allows the researcher to access at values giving a meaning to the object. However, the influence of the promotional discourse from the contemporary art world and the constraints that transformed art criticism in a journalism disengaged and consensual make problematic the legitimacy of a negative critique in the public space. First, the research focused on the subjects covered by newscast about contemporary art in order to understand criteria raised by this communication journalism that tries to satisfy the variety of accepted values by society. Then, disputes on the social network YouTube were analyzed. These give access to a speech freed from the constraints of the art world and journalism where the expression of a negative critique is possible. Thanks to sociology of values and a discourse analysis, it was possible to typify the receivable arguments in the public sphere. This patterning allows to state the hypothesis that the political meaning given to art defuses, paradoxically, the possibility of controversy. This politicization of art promotes evaluation criteria of artworks whose consistency appears considering the ‘‘insolite’’ as a new aesthetic category common to different cultural practices.

Mixórdia no picadeiro: circo, circo-teatro e circularidade cultural na São Paulo das décadas de 1930 a 1970 / Mixing cultures in the circus - Circus-theater and cultural circularity in São Paulo (1930-1970)

Walter de Sousa Junior 13 March 2009 (has links)
The circus-theater, that could be seen at São Paulos urban landscape throughout twentieth century, constituted itself in a form of popular per-formance based in the cultural hybridization, with elements from learned culture and mass culture. In turn, both of these cultures assimilated the cir-cus discourse, in an unequivocal process of cultural circularity.

De Horgwarts a Paraisópolis: discurso e recepção da obra Harry Potter em um contexto de capitalismo periférico / From Hogwarts to Paraisópolis: discourse and reception of the Harry Potter literary work in a context of peripheral capitalism

Marco Polo Ribeiro Henriques 24 September 2015 (has links)
The present study aimed to understand how the Harry Potter literary work (Brazilian edition), taking its context of production/dissemination and discourse into account, speaks to Brazilian readers, especially young residents of the Paraisópolis community in São Paulo. It has reconstituted the path taken by the work to reach Paraisópolis community\'s readers, with primary and secondary data collection from both the international and the Brazilian publishing markets. The basis for the theoretical discussion was supported on Communication Studies, historiographical studies, and Reading Sociology, which enable understanding the multiple factors involved in the practice of reading in contemporaneity, nurturing the interdisciplinary dialogue among those areas. For the constitution of the corpus, we analyzed the Brazilian edition of Harry Potter books focusing on elements of reality and ideological models that integrate the narrative, with the support of Bakhtin\'s theories, in an attempt to identify the relations involving the construction of meaning that are established between the speech in the Harry Potter series and contemporary teenage readers. This discursive corpus was used in a survey of the reception of qualitative approach carried out in Paraisópolis community with ten adolescents, spontaneous readers of the referred literary work. Two discussion groups were delimited by demographics such as gender and age, with which we carried out reading and writing sessions, group discussions, group dynamics (plays and games), exhibition of movie clips, and the application of a questionnaire consisting of open- and closed-ended questions about their socioeconomic profile and cultural habits. An in-depth interview was also conducted, with a view to collecting data and speeches that made up material for the analysis of the reception of the referred literary work. Supported by reflections concerning the areas of Communication Studies, Studies of Language, Cultural Studies, especially those dedicated to the Reception Studies, the set of procedures allowed the identification of indicators of uniqueness and cultural diversity of Paraisópolis community\'s readers, in response to hegemonic forms of communication and culture, with ambivalent aspects that challenge the dichotomous opposition inclusion/exclusion. The emergence and the analysis, from Mikhail Bakhtin\'s perspective, of unknown discursive correlations between the Harry Potter literary work and the universe of local experiences of the participants showed their positioning as enunciators, situated at a particular time in a given space, and aware of their responsible participation in the communicative process that goes beyond the limits of cultural reception and defines their particular place in the world.

The aim of this paper is to understand the worldviews of young people from urban peripheries by analyzing part of their poetic-musical productions. This project also aimed to understand and analyze their strategies of production and dissemination of their works, focusing, among other factors, the popularization of internet, apps and electronic devices, that may contribute to an artistic production, to some extent disconnected from record companies and distributors of popular music. We work here with the following hypotheses: in the set of poetic-musical production of young periphery there is a significant range in relation to musical styles and favorite subjects or more found; new digital technologies have opened new spaces to disseminate the artwork of young people who normally have no access to record companies and the so-called mainstream press; the artistic references of the young people from urban peripheries are found mainly in popular music, on TV, in movies and are accessed mostly on the Internet.

[en] RACHELS BLUNDERBUSS: MARIA MOURA, TELEVISION AND POWER / [pt] O BACAMARTE DE RACHEL: MARIA MOURA, TELEVISÃO E PODER

PATRICIA COELHO MORETZSOHN 21 September 2005 (has links)
[en] Throughout the times, women and mass culture have always been related to each other. Andreas Huyssen brought them together by showing the way they both threatened XIXth century`s masculine and bourgeois world. In this commented screenplay, based on the book Tantos Anos, by Maria Luíza de Queiroz and Rachel de Queiroz, the novel Memorial de Maria Moura, by Rachel de Queiroz, and its homonymous miniseries, adapted from the novel and aired by TV Globo in 24 episodes in the year of 1994, we can witness - in the form of a television show - the way how the writer Rachel de Queiroz, a woman who lived very long, and always among the powerful and intellectual people of her time, ended up being inspired by her own trajectory to create that who would become her last heroine: Maria Moura. Taken to television screen, the miniseries Memorial de Maria Moura, even when it was (which is a typical trait for this medium) the result of a process in which authorship is shattered, brings a heroine who didn`t lose the characteristic that approaches her the most to her creator: the attraction to power.

APROPRIAÇÃO E REUTILIZAÇÃO DE RESÍDUOS CULTURAIS: PRÁTICAS SERIALIZANTES EM AMAZONA, DE SÉRGIO SANT ANNA / APPROPRIATION AND REUSE OF CULTURAL WASTE: SERIALIZATED PRACTICES IN AMAZONA, BY SÉRGIO SANT ANNA

Franke, Carine Daniele 09 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aimed to analyze in the work Amazona, by the brazilian writer Sérgio Sant'Anna, how new forms of contemporary literature are taking advantage of serialized procedures representation, typical of speeches and/or vehicles from the scope of mass culture. The first chapter seeks to situate the literary writing of Amazona within a cultural background in process of depletion, which operates the weakening of the illustrated models of representation and enables the emergence of new literary forms, which stand for the appropriation, the deviation, the rewriting, the secondary status, the simulation. In the second chapter, which deals with the discursive procedures of hybridization present in Amazona, the aim is to highlight the influence, in the narrative fabrication of the novel, of images and compositional procedures typically feuilletonistic, mapping the ways in which the narrative resembles and conforms to address this serialized discourse of this entertainment literature. From this considerations, it becomes possible, then, already in the last chapter, to determine how the narrative appropriates these discourses in order to recycle then and reframes them, as they are removed from their home environment and inserted into a new context of production. For another perspective, if it is notorious in Amazona to set up a novel that behaves and in many ways simulates the typical narratives of feuilletonistic matrix, it is also possible to observe the incorporation into the fictional universe discursive instances from the cinematographic scope. The Seventh Art works on Amazona in order to influence much of the narrative organization, marking the construction of the narrator, characters, time and space and opening to the formation of a scripture that tends, in many aspects, to the filmic realization.

A study on videogames and reviews from a gender perspective

Söderberg, André January 2013 (has links)
This study is about how videogamecompanies and Swedish newspapers represent masculinity and femininity in the covers of the games Assassins Creed 3, Grand Theft Auto 5, Bayonetta and Tomb Raider along with the reviews being done in conjunction with the game. The reviews has been published in the following newspapers: Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen and Göteborgsposten. The image that is formed in our society about how a man and a woman should be and behave will be the basics of this study. The covers of the games often represent what the game itself is about and what it contains and the reviews also conveys what the consumer who buys the game gets. The video game industry has grown in recent years to become one of the largest entertainmentindustries, but despite this, there has not been many studies on how this media represents masculinity and femininity. This is why this topic is both relevant and interesting to study. The method that will be used for this essay is a content analysis with semiotics studies as a basis, along with the terms denotation, connotation and stereotypes as tools for the above mentioned method. A couple of gender-related theories have also been used since the essay’s basic idea is to study how the video game industry and the swedish press presents the traditional gender roles and gender issues. The theories that have been chosen are: gender, power, interpreting bodies, gender perspectives in media and mass culture, massmedia and journalism and finally the theory of the media market. The purpose of this study can be summarized into how the gaming industry and the related reviews in the Swedish press present masculinity and femininity. The result of the analysis shows that the video game industry presents masculinity and femininity according to the traditional and stereotypical ideals that exist in today's society. The analysis of the reviews in Swedish press shows that in most cases feminist struggle is not discussed and gender issues are in general not addressed.
