The Vigorous Local: Culture Industry, Hip-hop And The Politics Of Resistance In The Age Of GlobalizationMert, Ceren 01 September 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how music has become a significant means of communication in the process of globalization, and how it integrates the &lsquo / global&rsquo / and the &lsquo / local&rsquo / while enabling the aggrieved populations to speak through and to express their antagonistic stances. In addition to the discussions of globalization, this study analyzes the medium of music along the areas of media and identity politics. In this respect, it deliberates on the global and local features of hip-hop. Although born in the ghettos of Bronx, New York, this global youth culture has been adopted by other minority youths in order to voice their anger and frustration towards the exclusionist practices of the state, as well as racism and discrimination they face in their host countries. Accordingly, the second and third generation Turkish youths in Germany and South Asian youths in Britain have revealed their rage through the subversive lyrics they employed. Therefore, these lyrics can also be regarded as narratives that indicate these immigrant youths as representatives of resistance and defiance. Despite the fact that the musical works of these minority youths may be considered a product of the &lsquo / culture industry&rsquo / , this does not eliminate their resistive and subversive characteristics.

Losing the plot : architecture and narrativity in fin-de siècle media culturesZimm, Malin January 2005 (has links)

This thesis investigates the role of the term plot in mediating relations between architecture and narrativity. Examining organisational strategies in the creation of real and virtual spaces, it identifies literary works by novelists who have resisted, or subverted, plot conventions in fiction (Joris-Karl Huysmans, Edmond de Goncourt, Xavier de Maistre and Neal Stephenson), and introduces architectural spaces such as Thomas Edison’s film-studio Black Maria, and the plotless productions of early cinematography, to juxtapose concepts of plot and spatiality in a study of the production and consumption of pre-digital virtual spaces. Plot here relates therefore both to narrative sequentiality and spatial organisation – from "storyline" to "ground plan". The "plotless" narrative structure of Huysmans, Goncourt and de Maistre focuses on the interaction between man – the "writerin- residence" – and his domestic interior, functioning as an excitant or stimulant for the production of both material and imagined spaces. The media culture of late 19th century society saw the first significant attempts at moving image technology and its related spatialities – the Black Maria, the kinetoscope, the kinetograph, and the films produced by these, which had yet to find a narrative form. The architecture of the plotless novels and the proto-cinematic experiments of the late 19th century modulate between physical reality and fiction. They are ripe in their descriptive narrativity, expanding in the imagination of the consumer. Stephenson’s imaginative transposition of book media into a "Primer" – a new form of narrative media that develops its narrative content directly from the environmental context of its reader – concludes the discussion of the thesis, highlighting interrelations between fictive and real space, influencing both writer and reader. The refusal of narrative plot deprives the reader of causality, but emphasises the fictitious spatial creation in which the reader becomes immersed. These spaces, by virtue of their disengagement from plot, allow us to revisit the possibilities of virtual space without common preconceptions concerning the creation or experience of digital mediating technology.

Rachel, the circulation of the image, and the death of tragedyBethel, Marnie Elizabeth 25 February 2013 (has links)
Although it is frequently suggested that the idea of celebrity, as opposed to fame, is a construct of twentieth-century popular culture, many of the originating mechanisms and characteristics of modern celebrity have their roots in the more distant past. In France, the Industrial Revolution and the resulting mechanization of the media in the early to mid-nineteenth century fostered the processes of publicity. The invention of photography, the explosion in circulation of newspapers, and the emergence of cultural criticism gave rise to a new sense of both the importance and the relatability of people in the public eye.
Elisa Rachel Félix (1821-1858), known professionally as “Rachel,” was the undisputed star of the French state theater, the Comédie-Française, from 1838 until shortly before her death. She was in many ways the first exemplar of the tropes of celebrity in French popular culture. Not only was she greatly admired for her talent in performance, especially in the classical tragic repertoire of the Golden Age of French playwriting, but she was also a pioneer in what Tom Mole has called “the hermeneutic of intimacy,” the perception on the part of the public that the accessibility of images of the performer creates a sense of connection and sympathy between artist and audience.
This dissertation will explore the varieties of media through which Rachel’s career and life were publicized and the competing currents of her celebrity identity: the extent to which the star was understood as an exceptional woman versus her identification with her public. Depictions of Rachel in traditional arts, such as sculpture and painting, competed with her portrayal in such modern media as photographs, newspaper columns and caricatures, either enhancing her closeness to her fans or emphasizing her fundamental difference.
The image of celebrity which Rachel helped to create endured after her premature death and contributed mightily to a foundational shift in the emphasis of media culture in France. Coinciding as it did with the heyday of Romanticism and the rise of realism in the arts, the cult of celebrity contributed strongly to the death of the tragic genre. / text

O uso do vídeo na educação / The use of vídeo in educationArlene Lélis Fernandes de Souza 22 February 2004 (has links)
Research on its aproach in classroom instruction, o how cinema as a form of art present in educational environments contribute to the construction of knowledge, and to what extent video education might be made effective in DE, aiming at the building of such knowledge, has been used as a starting point, for which Saussure`s language concepts and Vigotsky`s social interaction issue were considered. Parallel to this, through the view of Iser and Eco, the proficiency of the reader in the construction of knowledge was presented. The investigation of the use of IT (information technology) in the educational environment was based on Lévy and Morin, as well as on Nóvoa, indicating how prepared teachers are and, in case this preparation does not exist, how they incorporate the new learning paradigm, which is pervaded by the mass media culture; the conclusion is that video education has not yet became a strategic resource to be used in educational milieu, neither in daily interactions in society

As transformações da escuta a partir da utilização das mídias portáteis / Changings of the listening process by the use of portable mediaOtavio Luis Silva Santos 08 August 2014 (has links)
In the beginning of the 20th century, the man - machine- listening relation achieved a new level. During the first decades of the 21th century, the ubiquity of portable media (defined in this work as iPods, tablets and smartphones) promotes new alterations in the listening habits, therefore social and musical impacts. Beginning from the Walkman, one of last century\'s most acclaimed icons of portability, this work analyses the sequence of the following main devices and formats - each one with its particular cultural impacts - until reaching the 2010s, a decade dominated by MP3 and based on a unique musical listening experience. This work intends to reflect, through extensive research and bibliographical discussion, the main musical and social reorganization originated by the massive use of these devices as the urban leading musical listening vehicle, increasing the visibility and the relevance of more detailed researches in this area.

The Reality of Fear: Preaching in a Frightened WorldRoser, Traugott 28 November 2019 (has links)
Fear is a recurrent theme in today’s popular culture. Film director Steven Spielberg’s lifelong work presents the full range from awe and fear to terror, heading towards a deeply humanist approach of overcoming fear. This article puts homiletics into the context of current sociocultural discourse by applying the concept of ‘paradigm scenario’ (Ronald de Sousa) to fear in media culture and preaching. Preaching, like film, works with emotions such as fear and anxiety, initiating strong physical and mental reaction. To preach within a fearful world demands that one be aware of the psychology of fear. As much as preachers are ready to face their personal fears, they abstain from frightening others. At best, preaching is the art of supporting people to live life liberated by the gospel, speaking up against those who create an atmosphere of fear. The gospel provides numerous paradigm scenarios of courage and vision.

This research seeks to discuss an uncommon reflection about spirituality. The background for this reflection mostly takes place within the cosmopolitan urban context. The main goal of this research is to provide a dialogue between a representation of reality, from the urban context, through the analysis of a spirituality manifested in the sitcom Friends, and through the eyes of Leonardo Boff and his perspective on spirituality. Thus, if it is possible to sketch a vision of this, imagine someone in front of the TV, watching episodes of Friends with the indicated texts Boff in his hands. Better yet, imagine someone sitting next to Boff, both watching the hit series and sharing their perceptions in a friendly dialogue, both devoted to recognizing points of correlation between what the theologian thinks, says, and writes, and what composes the series in audio, image, and movement. This specific approach to Boffs work, Virtues: For Another Possible World, aims to create these unusual dynamics. There is dialogue, however, with several authors from different traditions, in addition to research on media/television culture and spirituality. This research sheds the assumption that you can find possibilities to understand television in its everyday representation. Similarly, it approaches the allusion that contemporary theological thinking seeks answers over a spirituality experienced in an urban and cosmopolitan environment. To represent this cosmopolitan environment, the research elects the sitcom Friends as a timely manifestation and representation of this reality that is ever so relevant to our way of life. At the other end, but with the expectation of a point of correlation, the research lists perspectives of the work and the thoughts of Leonardo in regards to spirituality. To do so, the research starts with general definitions of spirituality, and then a definition relevant for this research. It continues by providing a definition of what a sitcom is beyond the sitcom Friends. From this point on, proposals about spirituality are agreed on, namely implicit spirituality (traces/remnants of faith that survives not dependent on or committed to a tradition), explicit spirituality (religious formalities and legacies tied to ambiguous traditions of faith), and spirituality manifested (friendship/fellowship in elements such as hospitality, conviviality, and commensality present themselves to start and maintain themselves). In this last characterization of spirituality (manifested), the research seeks to understand and analyze, in the sitcom Friends, issues such as hospitality, conviviality, and commensality; and, following, a highlight of when these issues lead to another level of communion: marriage. Finally, a the research engages in a discussion and proposed (re)reading of the conduit, positioning and relationship of our faith communities in urban and cosmopolitan contexts.
