Mixing memory and desire: recollecting the self in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand

Waugh, Kirsty January 2009 (has links)
Just as memory pervades our everyday lives, it pervades the lives of the characters and readers of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Acts of recall or recollection occur in almost every chapter as the characters in these novels devote much of the present to keeping in touch with some aspect of the past. Memory is integral to Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, highlighting the following problematic questions: Who are we and how do we relate to the past? How is what we wish for the future grounded in the past and the present? Memory is at the core of constructivism, the active construction of reality by the individual through the use of mental activity. In this thesis I maintain that the central protagonists in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, Harry Potter and Lyra Belacqua, actively construct their "selves" from memories and narratives – their own and those of others – just as the novels' readers negotiate their own identities in the world outside of the novels. The constant recalling of the past to confirm and amply one's present creates a complex web of remembering and forgetting, assimilating and discarding, which we attempt to explicate through the use of culturally appropriate metaphors. The thesis comprises three chapters that correlate memory with genre, narrative, and technology respectively. I commence the thesis by exploring the idea of genre as collective memory. I position Harry Potter and His Dark Materials within the genre of heroic fantasy and examine how the monomyth provides readers with the memory triggers they require to decode the structure of these texts. The novels conform to and yet manipulate the preconceived patterns present in the heroic or "high" fantasy genre, where narrative, memory and identity are all linked by the desires of the stories' participants. Chapter Two applies Freud's concept of Nachtraglichkeit, which supposes the process of memory is one of incessant reconsideration or "retranslation", the reworking of memory traces in the light of later knowledge and experience. This conceptualisation of memory is compared to the common, but less productive, tendency to describe memory through objectifying metaphors, such as the idea that memory works analogously to a photograph. Chapter Three addresses how knowledge and experience in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials are furnished by prosthetic memory devices, such as photographs, the Pensieve, the alethiometer and the Amber Spyglass, “that permit us to transcend "raw" biological limits – for example, the limits on memory capacity or limits on our auditory range” (Bruner, Acts of Meaning 34). The novel's protagonists are then armed with these devices in trying to make sense of the landscapes they inhabit. Ultimately, we are all story-tellers (for better or for worse), weaving our self-narratives from material gleaned from the collective memories and prosthetic memory devices of the society we belong to, our own experiences, and the tales of others, trying to achieve the uniformity of consciousness and an awareness of the connection between the actions and events of the past, and the experience of the present, which are fundamental to a sense of individual identity.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2287735 bytes, checksum: 3b6ec7489ea1e266aede7e26c096d133 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Information Science and Museology show openness to dialogue discipline. Both areas interested in the museum exhibitions (LOUREIRO, LOUREIRO, SILVA, 2008; MORAES, 2008) included as the main vehicle for creating social significance of the museum. This thesis aims to analyze the narrative exposition of the Casa of José Américo Museum (CJA) from the characterization of the formation and operation of its expository structures, while information practices, characterized as a descriptive analysis of character too, exploratory approach outlined as a field study (Gil, 2006). It addresses the following themes: information; dialogical relation of Information Science, Museology and Semiotics, Memory and Collective Identity, Culture Heritage Material; Typologies Museum, emphasizing the Houses-Museum, museum exhibitions and Informational Practices in museological context. The research is the permanent exhibition at the Casa of José Américo Museum, located in the city of João Pessoa - PB, whose collection represents the life and work of writer and politician José Américo. It is used as a research method to Semiotic Analysis. To collect data we used the technique of direct observation and qualitative non - participatory and non-directed and informal interviews with museologist who planned and assembled the exhibition of the Museum CJA. It is concluded that exposure can be studied as a museum and field research object, understanding it as a space for dissemination of information, representing the social and cultural role of the museum. Understanding how memory representation (DIEHL, 2002) one can see that Semiotics, both as theory and as a research method, is the theory that underlies this representational process, since it is given both in the context of materiality - sign object, sign vehicle - as in the immateriality - interpretant sign. Therefore, the analysis of informational phenomena, focusing on the collective cultural memory, pervades the relationship with the semiotic analysis, through which you can build methodological models for the study of information as memory support. Understand the museums as producers of information and construction of representations from fragments of reality represented there in the material culture expressed in the exhibits is to see the museum as a place of production of meaning.

Způsoby vzniku a reprodukce historického vědomí na příkladu spolku Radecký Praha / The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha

Petrnoušková, Anna January 2016 (has links)
The master thesis "The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha" deals with the historical consciousness, its creation and reproduction. The theoretical part defines not only historical consciousness but also pays attention to the related issues, such as collective memory, historical memory, sites of memory, or national identity, due to the fact that the boundaries between collective memory and historical consciousness are often at least unclear. Theoretical part is primarily based on the works of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Miroslav Hroch and Pierre Nora. The empirical part of this study concludes the research of the association Radetzky Prague, which seeks to return the monument of Marshal Radetzky on the Malostranské náměstí. The research tries to describe and understand the ways of creation and reproduction of historical consciousness of its members throughout the analysis of qualitative interviews. Mentioned authors already provide a certain methodological background research. Conclusion contains a summary and a comparison of research results with theses of authors that are dealing with similar themes. This work is not a purely historical or sociological one; it is trying to stay somewhere between historical and sociological...

Paměť starého Jihu: Pozůstatky občanské války optikou amerických reenactors / The Old South Memory: Remnants of the Civil War through the perspective of American reenactors

Volfová, Anna January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the role of the American Civil War memory in the American society today. It examines this phenomenon through the perception of American Civil War reenactors. The thesis analyses their opinions on the current issues that are linked to the history of this conflict - the omnipresence of the Confederate monuments and the Confederate battle flag in the American public space. It also explores the subject of the Southern identity, the role of the Confederacy in its formation and whether the ideas of the Confederacy are still present in the South today. It is necessary to understand the Southern mentality and how it is perceived by the rest of the United States, because the individual characteristics of the Southern identity are reflected in the current debates on the Confederate heritage. An idea that interconnects the individual chapters of the thesis is that the American Civil War memory is strongly influenced by the Lost Cause ideology and the overall mythologization of the conflict. While the Civil War reenactors' main motivation is to educate society about the conflict, their opinions are also mostly supportive of the romantic perception of the Confederacy.

O centauro e a pena : Luiz Carlos Barbosa Lessa (1929-2002) e a invenção das tradições gaúchas

Zalla, Jocelito January 2010 (has links)
This work aims to construct an intellectual biography of the folclorist, tradicionalist movement‟s activist and writer Luiz Carlos Barbosa Lessa (1929-2002). It is our objective to analyze his trajectory and his written production to access the process of construction of the social representations about the brazilian gaucho and the collective projects of regional identity and “invention of traditions” in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) during the second half of the twentieth century. First of all, I introduce some theoretical considerations about: a) the social construction of reality through the concept of “representation”, according to Pierre Bourdieu and Roger Chartier; b) the role of symbols and rituals in this process through Eric Hobsbawm‟s notion of “invention of tradition”; c) the connection between life and literature, trajectory and theory, politics and identity provide by Gilberto Velho‟s concept of “project”. The findings show Barbosa Lessa‟s answers to the contests in regionalist literature during the 1940‟s harmonize romantic and realistic positions to fabricate a new pattern of “gaucho on horseback”. His perspective enables the use of this myth to reclaim State social support to the “rio-grandense” peasant. To the other side, it allows the popular appeal in the construction of symbols and rituals for the gaucho traditionalist movement. In his intervention in the regional identity debate, Barbosa Lessa adds, in his narrative about the social formation of Rio Grande do Sul, another subjects and groups symbolically marginalized, like African element, women (invented as “prenda”) and immigrants. Whether the gaucho continues in the center of attention of Lessa, his new model is set of cultural elements with diverse social, and including ethnic, origin. In the late 1970‟s, a tension starts, in the guidelines of the Rio Grande do Sul‟s State Secretary of Culture, under his direction, and, later, in his writings, between this open perspective, inspired in folklore, and another more traditional, inspired in historiography. The resolution in favor of the first pole of the tension just happens when Barbosa Lessa intermediates the internal dispute in traditionalist movement and defends the “gauchismo”, in general, criticized by a new generation of university intellectuals, in the 1980‟s. So, I intend to show the specificities of the memorials‟ discourse that enable emotional enunciations in the reconcilement of traditionalist activists and the dissidence “nativista” and, either, in his controversy with academic professors. Thus, the image of “Rio Grande do Sul” changes from a Portuguese and Brazilian State turned gaucho by the characteristics of the environment to another absolutely gaucho because of his cultural variety and transformation condition.
