Una Ola Interminable. A Minor Field Study about FEJUVE and it´s Influence on Structural Inequalities in the Bolivian Society

Lundqvist, Martin, Moberger, Kim January 2008 (has links)
We have taken as our point of departure the structural inequalities in Bolivian society, and recognised that these need to be reduced in order to create a better functioning society. We have chosen to conduct an investigation on how these structural inequalities can be reduced. In order to do this we have conducted a field study in Bolivia, where we through interviewsand observations investigated a social organisation situated in El Alto, called FEJUVE. We have focused on how this through it’s work and organisation influence Bolivian society, in positive as well as less positive manners. We have chosen five different aspects of theorganisation which we have studied in closer detail, since we hold that these have a special relevance in the struggle for a structurally more equal society. These aspects deal with questions concerning: democracy; machismo culture; coercion; critical awareness; theFEJUVE’s relation to the ruling political party and it’s current relation to conflict that “shuts down” society. Theories about democracy; structural inequality; marginalised groups’ relation to conflict and social movements are discussed and assessed throughout this thesis. Our conclusion erads that the FEJUVE has good as well as less good qualities, our investigation thus contributes to exhibiting the complexity of civil society, and the impossibility to view this as either simply a positive or a negative force.

Surface properties of cassiterite and their implications for selective separation in froth flotation

Wu, Haosheng 22 April 2024 (has links)
In this thesis, the surface properties of cassiterite due to the changes of two material properties, i.e. crystallographic orientation, and Fe as a minor element in the lattice, and their implication for selective separation are studied. In the study of the crystallographic orientation of cassiterite, the physicochemical behaviors of the surfaces SnO2(110), SnO2(100), as well as SnO2(001) were investigated by using high-resolution direct force spectroscopy. The measurements were conducted between a silica sphere and sample surfaces in 10 mmol/L KCl between pH 3.1 and 6.2 using colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (cp-AFM-hydrophilic). Dissimilar interactions were detected on different-oriented surfaces. The pH values where the force switched from positive to negative can be clearly distinguished and be ordered as SnO2(100) < SnO2(001) ≈ SnO2(110). The most potent attractive force was found to be on the (110) cassiterite surface compared to the (100) and (001) cassiterite surfaces at lower pH. By fitting the force curves in the DLVO theory framework, anisotropic surface potentials were computed between the three sample surfaces following a similar trend as force interaction. This differential surface potential might be due to the difference in Sn cation density and electron affinity. To study the implication of crystallographic orientation to surfactant adsorption, we used Aerosol22 (sulfosuccinamate) as an anionic collector for cassiterite flotation to functionalize the different samples at pH 3. The contact angle measurements, the topography visualizations by AFM, and the force measurement using cp-AFM with hydrophobized spheres (cp-AFM-hydrophobized) have shown that Aerosol22 was adsorbed on the sample surfaces inhomogeneously. The adsorption followed the order of SnO2(110) > SnO2(100) > SnO2(001) in the concentration from 1 × 10−6 mol/L to 1 × 10−4 mol/L. In the study of Fe as a minor element in the lattice of cassiterite, synthetic pure cassiterite, and cassiterite doped with two different Fe contents were successfully recrystallized by means of sintering. Their crystal structure and chemical compositions are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Their floatability was studied by microflotation with a diphosphonic acid surfactant named Lauraphos301 as a collector. Unlike the addition of ferric ions in solution, which strongly depressed the floatability of all the cassiterite samples, a much higher flotation efficiency of the Fe-doped cassiterite samples was found especially at lower collector concentrations. The cassiterite floatability is proportional to the Fe content in the cassiterite at a broad range of pH, and the recovery has the following order: Cassiterite with 1417 ppm Fe > cassiterite with 1165 ppm Fe > pure cassiterite The electrokinetic behavior of the cassiterite samples with and without the collector was studied by electrophoretic measurements and revealed that the chemical interaction dominated the adsorption. With the help of the particle shape analysis, a more angular shape was found for the Fe-doped cassiterite samples. Moreover, without the influence of particle shape, abundant adsorption of Lauraphos301 was found on the Fe-doped cassiterite samples by AFM topography imaging. The minor amount of Fe in the cassiterite lattice and a more angular shape of the Fe-doped cassiterite samples were believed to enhance floatability collectively. The study reveals that the influence of the chemical composition of the minerals on flotation was almost inextricably bound up with particle morphology and emphasizes the importance of considering both factors and investigating them individually for the flotation study.

The political role of women of the Roman elite, with particular attention to the autonomy and influence of the Julio-Claudian women, 44BCE to CE68

Zager, Ilona 06 1900 (has links)
Many accounts, both ancient and modern, have maintained that the Julio- Claudian women had unprecedented influence in their spheres. This dissertation attempts to determine the degree of autonomy and influence that the Julio-Claudian women had and to examine the factors that may have contributed to their exceptional influence. In trying to establish the extent and nature of the influence of the Julio- Claudian women, the ancient sources (literary, documentary and iconographic), in conjunction with modern scholarly views, were critically examined throughout. In attempting to determine the factors that influenced such weight and autonomy as these women had, the dissertation looks at the influences on women of earlier times, in particular the late Roman Republic, from a legal and a socio-historical angle. Whether the Julio-Claudian women could be considered, for example, to have been part of a “super-elite” in comparison with aristocratic women of earlier, and even later, times, was discussed and evaluated. On the surface the Julio-Claudian women did seem to enjoy a wider range of freedoms, power and influence than their counterparts, or the Roman women before or after them. Yet it is clear from the sources that these women also had restrictions laid upon them and that the patriarchal framework still curtailed their influence. When they over-stepped the accepted bounds, they were invariably vilified by the ancient historians, and often came to be negatively portrayed by subsequent generations. Whether these women truly deserved their vilification, or whether it can simply be ascribed to the bias of the ancient writers, was also explored throughout. / Classics & World Languages / M.A. (Classical Studies)

Graph structurings : some algorithmic applications / Structurations des graphes : quelques applications algorithmiques

Kanté, Mamadou Moustapha 03 December 2008 (has links)
Every property definable in onadic second order logic can be checked in polynomial-time on graph classes of bounded clique-width. Clique-width is a graph parameter defined in an algebraical way, i.e., with operations ``concatenating graphs'' and that generalize concatenation of words.Rank-width, defined in a combinatorial way, is equivalent to the clique-width of undirected graphs. We give an algebraic characterization of rank-width and we show that rank-width is linearly bounded in term of tree-width. We also propose a notion of ``rank-width'' of directed graphs and a vertex-minor inclusion for directed graphs. We show that directed graphs of bounded ``rank-width'' are characterized by a finite list of finite directed graphs to exclude as vertex-minor. Many graph classes do not have bounded rank-width, e.g., planar graphs. We are interested in labeling schemes on these graph classes. A labeling scheme for a property P in a graph G consists in assigning a label, as short as possible, to each vertex of G and such that we can verify if G satisfies P by just looking at the labels. We show that every property definable in first order logic admit labeling schemes with labels of logarithmic size on certain graph classes that have bounded local clique-width. Bounded degree graph classes, minor closed classes of graphs that exclude an apex graph as a minor have bounded local clique-width. If x and y are two vertices and X is a subset of the set of vertices and Y is a subset of the set of edges, we let Conn(x,y,X,Y) be the graph property x and y are connected by a path that avoids the vertices in X and the edges in Y. This property is not definable by a first order formula. We show that it admits a labeling scheme with labels of logarithmic size on planar graphs. We also show that Conn(x,y,X,0) admits short labeling schemes with labels of logarithmic size on graph classes that are ``planar gluings'' of graphs of small clique-width and with limited overlaps.

"Very Beautiful and Very American": A Multicultural Analysis of Florence B. Price's Quintet in A Minor for Piano and Strings

Carvajal Harding, Taryn Jane 26 April 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This paper examines the Quintet in A Minor for Piano and Strings by Florence B. Price (1887-1953). One of Price's latest compositions (with final revisions dated January 21, 1952), the Quintet is a masterful example of what is possible when using a multicultural lens to approach the making of American music. This paper exposes the insufficiency of examining (and assessing) multicultural composers and their works only with traditional Western European analytical views, when an expanded approach is needed to explain many of the non-European musical influences and phenomena. While more complex and challenging, this expanded analytical approach sheds added light and understanding on all compositional techniques used within this work. This analysis of the Quintet in A Minor shows that Price often self-quotes from some of her own earlier works; specifically works from her organ, art song, and symphonic oeuvres. The findings also show that Price's understanding of both Western Classical traditions and African-American musical traditions enabled her to intertwine multiple cultures, creating novel forms that are authentic to the American experience she lived. Price created what she referred to as a "very beautiful and very American" sound.

Ecophysiological traits and their responses to drought in species from the Balearic Islands with different growth forms

Galmés Galmés, Jeroni 13 March 2006 (has links)
The objectives of this work were to analyze how biodiversity and adaptation to Mediterranean climate is reflected in a diversity of ecophysiological traits and their responses to drought, and to study whether such diversity was related to growth forms and endemicity. The analysis covered the germination capacity, the effects of drought on seedling growth, the leaf ecophysiological responses to drought, and the adaptation of Rubisco specificity, in 24 Mediterranean species from the Balearic Islands. A wide range of variation has been observed among the species, with about half of this variability associated to different growth forms. However, no differentiation was found between endemic and non-endemic species of the Balearic Islands. The high diversity in the ecophysiological traits and their responses to drought found among Mediterranean species must be considered as a 'resource' to identify target adaptive traits for breeding plans, but also as a genetic bank to improve crop productivity.

The repetition of originality : on the question of association between late antique 'Gnostics' and the medieval Kabbalah : an argument for a revised methodology

Goldstein, Benjamin Gordon Mark January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to provide a critique of the conclusions of Gershom Scholem regarding the potential for ‘Gnostic’-Kabbalistic filiation, and to establish whether, in light of the available evidence, Scholem’s arguments (which have yet, to my mind, to be sufficiently challenged) can be reasonably supported. I strive to offer an arguably clearer definition of the relevant taxonomic terms than is often presented in scholarly analyses of this question, whilst also arguing for the applicability to this debate of certain pertinent methodological approaches drawn from the wider school of comparative mythology. As such, I also attempt to establish a clear methodology for judging the probability of the genetic descent of one ‘system’ from another, viz. that perhaps the most logical method for assessing potential similarities between different ‘systems’ is to assume in the first instance that all correspondences identified are essentially coincidental, dismissing this assumption only if one can identify a high level of exactness in these comparisons (such as would render pure coincidence relatively improbable) and/or establish a secure chain of transmission between two sources, a chain which renders the transmission of ideas not only possible but indeed probable. Applying this methodology to certain potential routes by which second century ‘Gnostic’ thought might have been transmitted to the origin point of the medieval Kabbalah, I attempt both to demonstrate the wider applicability of such a methodology beyond the narrow question of ‘Gnostic’-Kabbalistic relationships, and to illustrate the serious difficulties with advancing any of these potential routes as a reliable source for the transmission of ‘Gnostic’ ideas to the Kabbalah. Rather, I argue that it may be more logically defensible, in the absence of clear source evidence, to ascribe such correspondences as are located purely to coincidence, albeit a coincidence perhaps somewhat tempered by certain observations regarding the relative ubiquity of certain concepts and modes of thought.

An orchestration of the Sonata no. 3 in F-sharp minor, Op. 23 by Alexander Scriabin

De Castro Martins Amaro, Olga Maria 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The work presented herewith is an orchestration of one of the most idiomatic piano pieces composed by Alexander Scriabin: the Sonata no.3 in F‐sharp minor, Op. 23. This particular orchestration involved a process of profound examination and comprehension of the form of the sonata, as well as understanding the role of each instrument of the symphony orchestra, and how they could contribute to an orchestral reconstruction of Scriabin’s work. The re‐creation of the piano part, and the whole experience that supported this challenge, resulted in the individual production in which my particular interpretation of Scriabin’s music reflects the maturity of an absorbed investigation of his style of composition.
