Intentional Learning Orientation According To Gender, Age, Rurality, and Program TypeAnderson, Sarah, Glenn, Loyd Lee 12 April 2019 (has links)
Several studies have found that learning styles differ based on gender, but others found no differences. There are no previous studies on gender differences in intentional learning styles. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to evaluate intentional learning style differences based on gender, demographics, and psychological characteristics.
The participants were junior level nursing students in a research course in two different semesters. The Learning Orientation Questionnaire of Martinez (2006) was administered in February of 2018 and 2019 to participants (n=198) and analyzed using ANOVA.
The LOQ score was significantly different between males and females (p= 0.013). Males had a mean of 2.76 + .89 SD (N=26) but females had an LOQ score of 2.40 + .52 SD (N=169). The LOQ score was not significantly different for students seeking different degrees (p= 0.16). 2nd Degree-seeking students had a mean of 2.43 + 0.37 SD (N=25), LPN-BSN students had a mean of 2.63 + 0.35 SD (N=2), Main BSN students had a mean of 2.44 + 0.62 SD (N=163), RN-BSN students had a mean of 2.5 + 0.70 SD (N=6). Other types of degrees had a mean of 3.5 + 0.35 SD (N=2). The LOQ score was not significantly different for distances that students had to travel to the nearest hospital (p=.54) Students with a distance of 15-30 minutes from their house had a mean of 2.5 + 0.67 SD (N=75). A distance of 30-45 minutes had a mean of 2.62 + 0.63 SD (N=15). A distance of 5-15 minutes had a mean of 2.42 + 0.54 SD (N=86) A distance of less than 5 minutes had a mean of 2.31 + 0.55 SD (N=12). A distance of greater than 45 minutes away had a mean of 2.29 + 0.45 SD (N=9). The LOQ score for the age of responders was not significantly different (p=0.71). Students who were 23 or less had a mean of 2.45+ 0.66 SD (N=103), students who are between 24-29 had a mean of 2.35 + 0.34 SD (N=15), students who are between the ages 30-39 had a mean of 2.63 + 0.38 SD (N=6), students who are older than 40 had a mean of 2.13 + 0.37 SD (N=4), students who preferred not the answer had a mean of 3.0 + SD not available (N=1).
The conclusion is that males and females have varied intentional learning styles. This supports previous studies that found differences in learning style in medicals students and practicing nurses.

Evaluation of 3D dynamic effects induced by high-speed trains on double-track slab bridgesThomas, Jossian, Arañó Barenys, Assís January 2016 (has links)
In addition to a static design, a dynamic analysis has to be performed for bridges for which the maximum permissible train speed exceeds 200 km/h. This analysis requires a lot of computing time, for this reason Svedholm and Andersson (2016) have developed a simple tool describing the relationship between the first eigenfrequency of the bridge, the span length and the minimum mass to fulfill the regulation specified in EN-1990. However, these diagrams are based on 2D beam models in which the 3D dynamic effects are not considered. An evaluation of the torsional modes has been performed by analyzing parametrized 3D bridge models, in order to obtain design diagrams including these effects. To do so, a frequency domain analysis has been implemented, based on a steadystate step previously performed in a FEM software. This approach provides a fast way to solve the equation of motion due to the Fourier transform properties, and allows applying several load configurations which are convenient for a parametric study. From this analysis it can be concluded that the thickness to fulfill the demands is larger for 3D models than for 2D. On one hand, contribution of torsional modes of vibration is more significant for the shortest span length, and on the other hand shear-lag effects lead to a reduction of the total resisting bending section.

Feedback control of resistive wall modes in the reversed field pinchYadikin, Dimitry January 2004 (has links)
A wide range of unstable current driven MHD modes is present in the re- versed τeld pinch (RFP) conτguration. An ideally conducting wall facing the plasma can stabilize the ideal MHD modes. In the presence of a resistive wall characterized by the wall time τw, fast mode rotation with the frequency exceeding the inverse wall time gives stabilization for resistive MHD modes. The ideal MHD modes in the RFP are non-rotating modes and can not be stabilized by the resistive wall. Instead they are converted into resistive wall modes (RWM) growing with a growth rate proportional to the inverse of the wall time τw. EXTRAP T2R is an RFP device equipped with a thin resistive wall having the wall time shorter than the plasma pulse duration τw < τp. This feature allows the study of non-resonant non-rotating resistive wall modes. Resistive wall modes dynamics has been studied in EXTRAP T2R . RWM growth rates has been measured and compared with linear MHD stability calculations. Quantitative agreement is observed. In the case τw < τp the RWM can cause discharge degradation and should be stabilized. Active feedback is the way to stabilize the RWM in the RFP. An intelligent shell scheme is one possible feedback scenario. An active feed- back system including a set of sensors and discrete active coils is installed in EXTRAP T2R. The intelligent shell tries to keep the magnetic flux zero at the positions of the sensor. The analog PID controller for the intelligent shell feedback scheme has been studied. A model of the active control system was developed and comparison with the experimental results showed good agree- ment. Encouraging experimental results on the active feedback stabilization of multiple RWMs in the RFP plasmas were obtained.

In motion –a traffic program for Nacka is the result of a survey of the traffic system and transportation situation in Nacka and suggests possible development opportunities. A new traffic strategy will be developed in the municipality of Nacka the coming years, which is the reason for this study: to map the current situation, identify strengths and weaknesses, needs and opportunities. This program suggests possible development opportunities and gives an historical overview of the transportation system, the current situation and an analysis of different transportation modes. A mapping of other municipalities’ traffic strategies or programs have been done and included into the program as well as a prognosis for the coming years in the municipality. The work has identified goals and contains a suggestion for an action plan. The suggestions can serve as a basis for further development to fulfill the set goals in the comprehensive plan, and also more specific in the transportation plan, to get a better interlinked and efficient transportation system in Nacka.

As an under-researched form of coordination and control, little is known of how collegiality is practiced, especially in for-profit firms. Our thesis has sought to address this research gap by interviewing professionals from two fields which are recognized as collegial, namely lawyers and architects. Our aim was to depict how for-profit firms coordinate and control using collegiality in relation to the traditional modes of governance of bureaucracy and management. We do this by utilizing the concept of institutional logics which focuses on field-level meaning systems and how actors use these systems of values, beliefs and expectations to make sense of their institutional environment. We could observe a clear coexistence of all three modes of governance. Our respondents indicated an awareness of the different logics and demonstrated an understanding of which governance mode was called for in which situation. This interplay was highly contextual and contingent on each situation's institutional demands and expectations. Collegial values were keenly advocated, yet work tasks that were legalized were also bureaucratized. The coexistence of fundamentally contradictory governance modes did not however appear to meet much internal resistance and seemed to rather function peacefully with wide employee acceptance.

Nevertheless, the studies were frequently combined with radio-frequency, microwave, THz, Raman and structural measurements provided by our colleagues, as well as by magnetic and elastic investigations, where we participated. Our main aim was the complex study of quantum-paraelectric antiferromagnet EuTiO3 in the form of crystals, ceramics and thin films. Near 300 K we have discovered an antiferrodistorive phase transition from cubic mPm3 to tetragonal I4/mcm structure in bulk EuTiO3 and explained its low-frequency dielectric properties by anomalous polar phonon behavior. Large and anisotropic magnetodielectric effect, which we found in EuTiO3, was successfully explained and experimentally confirmed by observation of tuning of phonon frequency with magnetic field. Our IR studies of tensile strained EuTiO3 thin films revealed a displacive ferroelectric phase transition near 250 K. In this thesis, data clustering techniques are applied to a competence database from the company Combitech. The goal of the clustering is to connect co-workers with similar competencies and competence areas in order to enable more skill sharing. This is accomplished by implementing and evaluating three clustering algorithms, k-modes, DBSCAN, and ROCK. The clustering algorithms are fine-tuned with the use of three internal validity indices, the Dunn, Silhouette, and Davies-Bouldin score. Finally, a form regarding the clustering of the three algorithms is sent out to the co-workers, which the clustering is based on, in order to obtain external validation by calculating the clustering accuracy. The results from the internal validity indices show that ROCK and DBSCAN create the most separated and dense clusters. The results from the form show that ROCK is the most accurate of the three algorithms, with an accuracy of 94%, followed by k-modes at 58% and DBSCAN at 40% accuracy. However, the visualization of the clusters shows that both ROCK and DBSCAN create one very big cluster, which is not desirable. This was not the case for k-modes, where the clusters are more evenly sized while still being fairly well-separated. In general, the results show that it is possible to use data clustering techniques to connect people with similar competencies and that the predicted clusters agree fairly well with the gold-standard data from the co-workers. However, the results are very dependent on the choice of algorithm and parametric values, and thus have to be chosen carefully.

Application of the Herschel-Quincke Tube Concept to Higher-Order Acoustic Modes in Two-Dimensional DuctsBrady, Lori Ann 22 March 2002 (has links)
The application of the Hershcel-Quincke (HQ) tube as a noise reduction device for one-dimensional plane-wave sound fields has been studied in great detail in previous years. In this thesis, an analytical technique is developed to investigate the potential of the HQ tube concept to control higher-order duct modes. This analytical method involves modeling the tube-duct interfaces as finite piston sources, which couple the acoustic field inside the main duct with the acoustic field within the HQ tube(s). The acoustic field within the HQ tube is modeled as plane-waves and the acoustic field within the main duct is modeled by expanding the sound field in terms of the higher-order modes. This model is then used to investigate the noise reduction mechanisms behind the attenuation of higher-order modes. These mechanisms involve both the reflection of the incident wave as well as the reconstruction and recombination of the modal content of the incident disturbance into other modes. The effects of the modal content of the disturbance along with the HQ tube geometric parameters, such as tube axial position, length, distance between interfaces, and cross-sectional area, are studied with respect to the frequencies of attenuation and the reduction obtained. These results show the potential of the Herschel-Quincke tube concept to reduce higher-order modes in ducts. / Master of Science
