El habla de la comunidad cubana en Montreal

Ce travail contient une première caractérisation générale du discours de la communauté cubaine à Montréal, avec une attention particulière sur deux aspects: le comportement de certains traits qui caractérisent l'espagnol de Cuba chez les locuteurs migrants, et les possibles variations produites par le contact linguistique. Pour ce faire, nous utilisons les données d'un corpus élaboré par la chercheuse à partir de conversations semi-dirigées enregistrées (registre colloquial) avec 19 Cubains: dix hommes et neuf femmes vivant à Montréal. L'analyse des données nous permet de vérifier que les traits caractéristiques étudiés se sont conservés dans le discours des Cubains résidants dans la ville, mais quelques variations se sont produites, provoquées par le contact avec les langues dominantes (français-espagnol, et moins en anglais-espagnol) et d'autres variétés de l'espagnol, ainsi qu’avec une réalité socio-économique, politique et culturelle très différente de celle d’origine. Les variations morphosyntaxiques ont été détectées principalement dans les mots invariables (prépositions). Au niveau lexico-sémantique, nous avons trouvé essentiellement des emprunts lexicaux. Il existe également des prêts sémantiques, des calques et des changements de fréquence de certains mots. Concernant le niveau pragmatique, nous avons remarqué un ralentissement du rythme dans les conversations de l'échantillon qui pourrait être dû à la situation du bilinguisme fonctionnel. En résumé, le discours des Cubains participants dans cette étude montre quelques-uns des traits caractéristiques à toute situation de contact de langues, mais aussi des particularités relatives aux caractéristiques de la communauté étudiée (les attitudes linguistiques, par exemple), à la distance typologique entre les langues impliquées (espagnol et français) et au contraste entre les sociétés d’origine et d’accueil, entre autres. / This paper presents a first general characterization of the speech of the Cuban community in Montreal, with special attention to two aspects: the behavior of some of the characterizing features of Cuban Spanish in migrant speakers, and the possible contact-induced variations. To do this, we use data from a corpus collected by the researcher through recorded conversations (colloquial speech) with 19 Cubans: ten men and nine women currently living in Montreal. After analyzing the data, we have found that the characterizing features are preserved in the speech of Cuban residents in the city. The data also show some variations induced by the contact with the dominant languages (French-Spanish and, to a lesser extent, English-Spanish) band other varieties of Spanish, as well as with a new reality that is socio-economically, politically and culturally very different from the Cuban one. The detected variations at the morphosyntactic level are mainly in invariable words (prepositions).At the lexical-semantic level, we have found predominantly loanwords. There are also semantic loans, calques and frequency changes of some words. Concerning the pragmatic level, a slower rhythm of speech, possibly due to the condition of functional bilingualism, has been observed. In sum, the speech of the Cuban participants in this study shows some of the characteristic features of any language contact situation, but also has peculiarities relating to the characteristics of the community under study (language attitudes, for example), the typological distance between the languages involved (Spanish-French) and the contrast between the societies, among other factors. / El presente trabajo contiene una primera caracterización general del habla de la comunidad cubana en Montreal, atendiendo especialmente a dos aspectos fundamentales: el comportamiento de algunos de los rasgos tipificantes del español de Cuba en hablantes migrantes, y las posibles variaciones sufridas producto del contacto lingüístico (francés-español, y en menor medida inglés-español). Para ello, empleamos los datos de un corpus confeccionado por la propia investigadora gracias a las conversaciones semidirigidas grabadas (habla coloquial) con 19 cubanos: diez hombres y nueve mujeres residentes en Montreal. El análisis de los datos nos permite comprobar que los rasgos tipificantes objeto de estudio se conservan en el habla de los cubanos residentes en la ciudad, pero esta ha sufrido algunos cambios provocados por el contacto con las lenguas dominantes y con otras variedades del español, así como con una realidad muy diferente a la de origen desde el punto de vista socioeconómico, político y cultural. Las variaciones se han detectado tanto en el nivel morfosintáctico, principalmente en las palabras invariables (preposiciones), como en el nivel léxico-semántico. En este último, predominan los préstamos léxicos. También se observan préstamos semánticos, calcos y cambios de frecuencia de algunas palabras. Desde el punto de vista pragmático, es posible observar una mayor lentitud en el ritmo de habla de los informantes, que podría deberse a la condición de bilingüismo funcional. Con todo, el habla de los cubanos participantes en este estudio presenta algunos de los rasgos característicos de cualquier situación de contacto lingüístico, pero posee también peculiaridades debidas a las características propias de la comunidad objeto de estudio (actitudes lingüísticas, por ejemplo), a la distancia tipológica de las lenguas implicadas (español-francés) y al contraste entre las sociedades de origen y de acogida, entre otros factores.

Esta tese consiste em um estudo descritivo da morfofonologia e da morfossintaxe da língua Arara, pertencente à família linguística Karib. O objetivo principal consiste em compreender como as categorias gramaticais de Tempo, Aspecto e Modo (TAM) interagem com as categorias de pessoa e número no predicado verbal. Certos morfemas de pessoa, assim como de número são selecionados por determinadas propriedades de TAM da sentença. Para dar conta do entendimento completo da interação entre essas categorias, as análises da presente tese incluíram propriedades gerais das interfaces morfofonológica e morfossintática que atuam nas formas e distribuição dos morfemas. Além disso, foram descritas algumas propriedades semântico-pragmáticas. Os morfemas estão sujeitos aos processos alomórficos comuns à língua como assimilação da sonoridade e da nasalidade, além de ablaut. Alomorfes supletivos também foram identificados, bem como morfemas portmanteau. Foram apresentados morfemas de tempo (passados - imediato, médio, distante - e futuro), aspecto (imperfectivo, iterativo, imperfectivo passado e resuntivo) e modo (imperativo, hortativo, vetativo, permissivo, admonitivo, interrogativo, intencional, frustrativo). As flexões de pessoa nos tempos e aspectos mencionados interagem com hierarquia de pessoa em verbos transitivos e com duas classes de verbos intransitivos. Verbos transitivos são afixados por duas séries de prefixos pessoais, A e O, enquanto cada classe de verbo intransitivo é afixada por apenas uma das séries de morfemas morfologicamente semelhantes aos morfemas encontrados em verbos transitivos, SA ou SO. Já os prefixos pessoais que ocorrem com as flexões de modo apresentam paradigmas menores, dos quais fazem parte um restrito conjunto de pessoas. As flexões de número, por sua vez, consistem em morfemas distintos que ocorrem com determinadas flexões de TAM. Apenas na terceira pessoa do passado distante e na terceira do passado médio são selecionados morfemas específicos. Deste modo, o plural é marcado por diferentes morfemas no mesmo paradigma. Também foram abordadas as construções não verbais, nas quais a categoria de TAM é expressa por partículas e morfemas de tempo nominal quando a cópula está ausente e por meio dos morfemas anteriormente investigados quando a cópula verbal itxi está presente. A metodologia empregada consistiu em realizar análises coerentes com a estrutura interna da língua, a partir do embasamento de conceitos analíticos provenientes da literatura de viés tipológico funcionalista e histórico-comparativo. Foram utilizados dados atuais, provenientes de trabalho de campo, que consistem em textos e sentenças. The main goal of the study is to understand how the grammatical categories of Tense, Aspect and Mood (TAM) interact with the marking of person and number on the predicate. Some person morphemes as well as number morphemes are selected by certain TAM properties of the sentence. To account for the full understanding of the interactions, the analyses include general morphophological processes and morphosyntactic aspects to which these morphemes are subject. In addition, some semantic-pragmatic properties are described. Morphemes are subject to processes of assimilation of sonority and nasality, as well as ablaut. There are also some suppletive allomorphs and portamanteau morphemes. TAM suffixes mark tense: three degrees of past (immediate, medial, distant) and future; aspects - imperative, iterative, imperfect used only in the distant past, resumptive; and mood - imperative, hortative, vetitive (prohibitive), permissive, admonitive, interrogative, intentional and frustrative. When inflected for these tense and aspect categories, the person prefixes of the verbs interact with a person hierarchy in transitive verbs and with two classes of intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs can be inflected with two sets of different personal prefixes, A and O, while each class of intransitive verbs can be inflected by one of the personal prefixes that are similar to the ones found with the transitive verbs, either the SA or SO series of prefixes. Personal prefixes of verbs inflected for all the mentioned moods form smaller paradigms, which are composed by a restricted number of person markers. Regarding the number category, there are distinct morphemes that occur with certain TAM inflections. Specific number morphemes occur only with the third person of the distant past and the third person of the medial past. In this way, the plural is marked by different suffixes in the same paradigm. Non-verbal constructions are also addressed. In these constructions, the TAM category is expressed by particles and morphemes of nominal tense when the copula is absent or by TAM morphemes if the verbal copula itxi is in the predication. The methodology employed is to perform analyses consistent with the internal structures of the language. These analyses are based on analytical concepts from typological funcionalist and historical-comparative literature. We used data from fieldwork, which consists of texts and sentences.

Treatment for Morphosyntactic Deficits: From Specific Strategies to a Holistic Approach

Clinicians have a wide-variety of therapy materials, activities, techniques, and procedures available for treatment of children with morphosyntax deficits. This clinically-focused article describes strategies that highlight the critical features of morphosyntactic targets, reviews, techniques, and procedures available to clinicians for their mindful use, and advocates for the addition of distributed learning in daily contexts by involving caregivers in language facilitation. It concludes with a proposal for a holistic approach that encompasses three levels of language intervention. At the first level, the clinician overtly primes the child's system; at the second level, the clinician sets up multiple opportunities to use the target in context; at the third level, the clinician engages caregivers as agents of intervention for distributed learning and sends the child out into a language-facilitating environment.

The Intersection of Speech-Language Pathologists’ Beliefs, Perceptions, and Practices and the Language Acquisition and Development of Emerging Aided Communicators

This dissertation discusses the convergence of aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, the language acquisition and development of young children who are minimally verbal or nonverbal who acquire their native language while simultaneously learning to use an aided AAC system, and explicit and implicit elements that influence language outcomes. Factors investigated include those related to language acquisition universals, the AAC system, the young aided AAC user, and practices, philosophies, and beliefs of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Further examined were: (a) language acquisition parallels in atypical populations who do not possess the full range of senses who have been shown to develop language, and (b) analogies between the linguistic structures of pidgins, interlanguages, and the syntax of young aided AAC users. This dissertation employed a survey methodology to capture the practices and beliefs of SLPs as a means of identifying potential contributing factors to the reduced linguistic outcomes of these children. Quantitative findings revealed statistically significant differences in SLPs’ perceptions of confidence and qualification with the two populations of children with language impairments who use an oral modality and young aided AAC users. Descriptive trends across all constructs measured suggested differences in SLPs’ practices, belifes, and perspectives in their work with these two populations. The analysis of the syntactic structures of the language of young aided AAC users revealed definitive parallels with the construct of interlanguages.

Topics in Sinhala Syntax

This study is a detailed investigation of a number of issues in colloquial Sinhala morphosyntax. These issues primarily concern grammatical relations, argument structure, phrase structure and focus constructions. The theoretical framework of this study is Lexical Functional Grammar.¶Chapter 1 introduces the issues to be discussed, followed by a brief introduction of some essential aspects of colloquial Sinhala as background for the discussion in the following chapters. In Chapter 2 we present basic concepts of the theoretical framework of Lexical Functional Grammar.¶ The next three chapters mainly concern grammatical relations, argument structure and clause structure in colloquial Sinhala. Chapter 3 examines grammatical relations. The main focus lies in establishing the subject grammatical relation in terms of various subjecthood diagnostics. We show that only a very small number of diagnostics are reliable, and that the evidence for subject is weaker than assumed previously. All the subjecthood diagnostics that were examined select the most prominent argument in the argument structure as the subject, i.e. 'logical subject'. However, there appear to be no processes in the language that are sensitive to the subject in the grammatical relations structure, i.e. 'gr-subject'. Further, there is no evidence for other grammatical relations like objects. In Chapter 4 we discuss the agentless construction and related valency alternation phenomena. It was previously assumed that the agentless construction, valency alternation phenomena and the involitive construction are all related. We argue that the agentless construction should be treated as a different construction from the involitive construction. We also show that the agentless construction and the involitive construction have contrasting characteristics, and that treatment of them as separate constructions can account for some phenomena which did not receive an explanation previously. The valency alternation phenomena are related to the agentless construction, therefore there is no valency alternation in involitive constructions. It will be shown that verbs undergoing the valency alternation can be distinguished from the other verbs in terms of the lexical semantic properties of individual verbs. Chapter 5 examines the structure of non-verbal sentences in terms of a number of morphosyntactic phenomena. It was previously argued that verbal sentences and non-verbal sentences in colloquial Sinhala differ in terms of clause structure. However, the present study shows evidence to the contrary.¶ The next two chapters deal with modelling contrastive focus and the phrase structure of the language. Chapter 6 is a detailed analysis of the contrastive focus (cleft) construction in various clause types in the language, and proposes a unified syntactic treatment of contrastive focus. Contrastive focus is in some constructions morphologically encoded, while in others it involves both morphological and configurational assignment of focus. The complex interaction between focus markers and verb morphology in various focus constructions is accounted for by general well-formedness conditions applying to the f-structure, and the principles of Functional Uncertainty and Morphological Blocking. In Chapter 7, we discuss the phrase structure of the language, in particular such issues as its non-configurational nature and the lack of evidence for VP. We propose non-configurational S and some functional projections to account for word order freedom under S and to explain certain morphosyntactic phenomena, such as configurational focus assignment. Finally, Chapter 8 summarises the conclusions made in previous chapters.

Developmental patterns of Spanish grammatical morphemes and mean length of utterance in bilingual children

The purpose of this analysis was to define norms for grammatical morpheme development in Spanish for Spanish-English bilingual children ages 4;0-7;6. This study uses secondary data analysis based on two existing datasets. Participants included 334 Spanish-English bilingual children that were recruited from school districts in Texas, Utah, and Pennsylvania. Grammatical morpheme accuracy was determined by performance on the BESA (Bilingual English Spanish Assessment) (Peña, Gutiérrez-Clellen et al., in preparation). Mean length of utterance in words (MLUw) data was collected from language samples. The average percent accuracy of grammatical morphemes was calculated and analyzed as a function of MLUw in Spanish. Results show that the percentage of accurately produced morphemes has a general upward trend as MLUw increases. Clinical and research implications are discussed. / text

Neste trabalho, defende-se a idéia de que o Kaiowá é uma língua Ativa/Inativa (Cisão Intransitiva), e que a. marcação de caso intra-clausal apresenta cisões motivadas por operações morfossintáticas e pela pragmática, o que resulta em diferentes configurações da marcação de caso na língua: nominativo/acusativo, ergativo/absolutivo ou ergativo/acusativo. Quanto à voz inversa, pode-se concluir que a análise sobre inversão proposta por Payne (1994) para as línguas Tupi-Guarani, aplica-se ao Kaiowá, e, pelo que se observa pelas análises, essa é uma língua de inversão semântica motivada pela hierarquia de pessoa. / Abstract: In this dissertation a description and an analysis of fundamental aspects of Kaiowá (Guarani) morphosyntax are presented. It results in a plausible knowledge of the grammar of this language. First, considerations on Kaiowá people and its language are made. It is also presented a discussion on the methodology adopted in the fieldwork of linguistic research. Second, the description is presented followed by grammatical analysis of Kaiowá that projected the research to a first analysis of case marking and inverse voice. In this dissertation, the idea of Kaiowá as an Active/lnactive (Split-S) is claimed. Splits motivated by morphosyntatic operation and by pragmatics are presented in intra-clausal case marking. It results in different configurations of case marking in the language: nominative/accusative, ergative/absolutive or ergative/accusative. Conceming the voice inverse its is possible to conclude that Payne's (1994) analysis of inversion on Tupi Guaraní languages is to Kaiowá. Esses Temas Contextuais fazem parte da matriz de formação básica do referido curso e têm como meta trabalhar com os alunos noções básicas sobre fones, fonemas, alofones, processos fonológicos, variáveis fonológicas, morfemas, alomorfes e formação e classes de palavras das línguas indígenas dos alunos e da língua portuguesa. O Tapirapé, língua cujo estudo da fonética, da fonologia e a da morfossintaxe no referido curso será examinado neste trabalho, pertence ao Subgrupo IV da Família Tupi-Guarani, do Tronco Tupi, segundo a classificação de Rodrigues (1986). A maioria da população Tapirapé reside na Terra Indígena Urubu-Branco, próximo ao município de Confresa–MT, e conta hoje com aproximadamente 948 indígenas.

Grammaire du khroskyabs de Wobzi / A Grammar of Wobzi Khroskyabs

Le khroskyabs de Wobzi (rgyalronguique, sino-tibétain), avec environ 350 locuteurs, est parlé au canton de Wobzi, comté de Chuchen, préfecture tibétaine et qiang de Rngaba, au Sichuan, en Chine. Notre thèse, une description linguistique du khroskyabs de Wobzi, est la première grammaire de référence du khroskyabs basée sur un corpus de textes recueillis au cours de neuf terrains depuis 2010. Elle comporte cinq parties principales.D’abord, un chapitre introductif, le chapitre 1, présente la situation sociolinguistique du khroskyabs, et le chapitre 2 la phonétique et la phonologique. Parmi toutes les langues de la famille sino-tibétaine décrites jusqu’à maintenant, le khroskyabs est celle qui a le plus grand nombre de groupes de consonnes initiaux, avec 715 groupes distincts ; par ailleurs, c’est également une langue à deux tons (haut et descendant), qui ne s’assigne qu’à l’une des syllabes dans une unité prosodique. Au chapitre 3, une introduction aux différentes parties de discours en khroskyabs de Wobzi est proposée, suivie de trois chapitres sur la morphologie nominale (le chapitre 4), les adverbes (le chapitre 5) et les autres parties de discours fermées (le chapitre 6).Ensuite, nous consacrons sept chapitres, du chapitre 7 au chapitre 13, aux constructions verbales, qui forment la partie centrale de la langue khroskyabs. Manifestant une morphologie verbale gabaritique, le wobzi est principalement préfixant, avec 11 positions préfixales et 2 positions suffixales. De plus, les affixes, surtout le préfixe causatif s-, subissent des processus morphophonologiques complexes : assimilation, dissimilation et métathèse, etc. Les propriétés de TAME se réalisent avec des opérations morphologiques, des auxiliaires ou des constructions phrastiques spécifiques.Ensuite, nous présentons les constructions phrastiques à travers quatre chapitres, du chapitre 14 au chapitre 17 : les phrases simples, la complémentation propositionnelle, la relativisation et les constructions comparatives, respectivement. Ces constructions présentent des propriétés distinctes des langues rgyalrong, en faisant usage des enclitiques nominalisateurs pour les complétives et les relatives, et possédant une formation du discours semi-direct unique et innovée, impliquant des changements de point de vue spécifiques. Enfin, dans l’annexe de la thèse, nous fournissons deux textes glosés, un index du vocabulaire et un dictionnaire. / Wobzi Khroskyabs (Rgyalrongic, Sino-tibetan), with around 350 speakers, is spoken in the Commune of Wobzi, Chuchen County, Rgnaba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. This dissertation, a linguistic description of Wobzi Khroskyabs, is the first reference grammar of the Khroskyabs language, based on text corpora collected from nine fieldworks since 2010. It consists of five major parts.Firstly, an introductive chapter (Chapter 1) presents the socio-linguistic situation of Khroskyabs, and secondly, in Chapter 2, the phonetics and the phonology are treated. Khroskyabs is so far the language exhibiting the largest number of initial consonant clusters amongst all Sino-Tibetan languages, with 715 distinctive clusters ; it is also a two-tone language (high and falling) that assigns one single tone to each prosodic unit.In the third place, Chapter 3 is an introduction to different parts of speech in Wobzi khroskyabs, followed by three chapters on nominal morphology (Chapter 4), adverbs (Chapter 5) and other closed parts of speech (Chapter 6).Then, seven chapters, from Chapter 7 to Chapter 13, are dedicated to verbal constructions, forming the main part of the dissertation. Exhibiting a templatic morphology, Wobzi is mainly prefixing, with 11 prefix slots and 2 suffix slots. Moreover, the affixes, especially the causative prefix -s, undergoes complex morphophonological processes: assimilation, dissimilation, metathesis, etc. Wobzi also presents TAME phenomena related to morphological operations, auxiliaries and specific sentential constructions.The chapters on verbs are followed by four chapters on sentential constructions, from Chapter 14 to Chapter 17, in which we will discuss simple sentences, complementation, relativisation and comparative constructions. These constructions present different properties compared to Rgyalrong languages, on the one hand, making use of nominalising enclitics for complementation and relativisation, and on the other, exhibiting a unique and innovated formation of semi-direct speech, with specific point of view changes.In the end, in the appendices, two glossed texts, a vocabulary index and a dictionary are provided.

À la recherche d'un temps perdu : la forme en -re dans la littérature juridique hispanique. Étude des hypothèses en si comportant la forme en -re, et de ses alternatives / In Search of a Lost Tense : the -re form in Spanish legal literature. A study of si-clauses containing the -re form or its alternatives

La forme en -re, dite « futur du subjonctif » (cantare), tombée en désuétude dans la langue standard espagnole, s’observe toujours dans le discours juridique. Dans cette étude, nous faisons l’hypothèse que la forme en -re survit car elle a une utilité pour la communauté des sujets parlants juristes. Adhérant à la linguistique du signifiant, dans la tradition guillaumienne, nous posons que cette utilité découle du signifié de la forme en -re. Notre corpus est composé de plusieurs documents juridiques qui représentent les cinq étapes du système modal définies par Gilles Luquet (1988). Nous choisissons les hypothèses en si car les experts ne s’accordent pas sur les alternatives légitimes de la forme en -re dans les protases de ces hypothèses. Les exemples collectés de ces documents, analysés au regard de la linguistique du signifiant, nous permettent de faire quatre conclusions : 1) l’alternance entre la forme en –se et la forme en -re dans les protases existe depuis le Moyen Âge ; 2) la forme en -re et ses alternatives ont des fonctions pragmatiques : elles contribuent à la cohérence du texte et elles permettent au juriste de faire progresser ourégresser l’argument du texte (fonction déictique) ; 3) la morphologie verbale des apodoses semble fortement liée au sous-genre juridique ; 4) cette étude de la forme en -re et ses alternances dans les hypothèses en si, jette la lumière sur la particularité du morphème si : étant élément du système espagnol d’affirmation, si ramène le perspectif de l’énoncé au présent, permettant au juriste de regarder la situation depuis le non-révolu (forme en -re) ou le révolu (la forme en -se) sans perdre la cohérence de son texte. / The -re form, or “future subjunctive” (cantare), is obsolete in Modern Standard Spanish, yet is still observed in legal literature. In this dissertation, we made the hypothesis that the -re form has survived because it is useful for the community of speakers who interact with legal literature. Using the theory of the linguistique du signifiant, we postulated that the different uses of the -re form are linked its signifier. To test ourhypothesis, we composed a corpus of several legal documents. They represent of each of the five epochs of the Spanish mode system defined by Gilles Luquet (1988). We chose to examine the role of this verb form in the protases of si-clauses because experts do not agree on the legitimate alternative verb forms in this syntax. After the observation and analysis of the examples collected, we made four conclusions. Firstly, the alteration between the -se form and the -re form in protases of si-clauses dates from the Middle Ages. Secondly, the -re form and its alternatives have pragmatic uses: they contribute to textual organization and allow the jurist to move backwards and forwards in the construction of his or herarguments (deictic function). Thirdly, the verbal morphology of the apodoses seems strongly linked with the legal subgenre of the documents. Fourth and finally, our study of the -re form and its alternatives sheds light on the specificities of the morpheme si: because it is part of the Spanish affirmation system, the morpheme si always brings the speaker’s perspective back to the present, allowing the jurist to observe the event unfold from a point in the non-past (-re form) or the past (-se form) without disrupting the text’scoherence.
