The relevance of pastoral counselling in South Africa: with reference to the South African Association for Pastoral WorkNeethling, Ilze 11 1900 (has links)
In South Africa, no occupational or professional councils for pastoral work exist as yet. In order to support pastoral counsellors in their negotiations to obtain professional status in this country, the presumed limitations and ineffectiveness of present mental health systems in South Africa is examined. Pastoral counselling as a possible national health resource is explored with reference to primary health care, freedom of choice, consumer rights, cost-effectiveness, spirituality, social change and reconciliation and multi-cultural application.
Arguments are imbedded in relevant theory and supported by vignettes of suffering, survival, and redemption in spirituality. A postmodern, qualitative approach is used. Participants' narratives indicate that they have experienced healing through utilising their religion and spirituality. However, this study does not claim to provide conclusive proof that pastoral work is relevant in this country - it should be seen as part of a process which aims to develop pastoral counselling as a profession. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Bevordering van selfaktualisering by milieu-geremde leerders binne 'n multikulturele onderwyssisteem / The promotion of selfactualisation of milieu disadvantaged learners with a multi-cultural education systemDe Bruyn, Carina Elizabeth 06 1900 (has links)
Summaries in Afrikaans and English / The promotion of multi-cultural education and the upliftment of milieu disadvantaged
children are closely related to each other, and is presently an important issue in the
South African educational system. Poor knowledge of milieu disadvantaged children
and multi-cultural education result in the loss of valuable learner potential and the
non-fulfilment of the education policy.
In this study, the promotion of self-actualisation of milieu disadvantaged children within a
multi-cultural education system is discussed from a psychological-educational
perspective. Attention is given to the problems and issues that play a defining role in
the implementation of such an educational system. The influence of the environment en
the development and functioning of milieu disadvantaged learners is investigated
further. Qualitative research is done to identify the developmental areas where most
problems occur. Finally, recommendations are made to the government, teachers and
parents that ~an serve as guidelines to promote the selfactualisation of these learners.
leerders binne 'n multikulturele onderwyssisteem vanuit 'n opvoedkundig-sielkundige
perspektief bespreek.
Educational Studies / M. Ed. (met spesialisering in Voorligting)

The validation of a psychological assessment battery for the selection of customer service agents in a South African commercial airline companyDavis, Ryan Jonathan 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the research was to determine whether measures of ability,
personality and behaviour would significantly predict job performance of customer
service agents in a South African commercial airline company. The Verbal
Interpretation Test (VCC1), Numerical Reasoning Test (NP6.1), Basic Checking Test
(CP7.1C), Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32) and a competency
based interview were completed by job applicants. Customer Contact Competency
(CCC) scores and a Person Job Match (PJM) score were derived from the OPQ32
and ability measures to ensure job relevance during selection assessment. Job
performance statistics in the form of training scores and supervisor ratings (from
performance appraisals and criterion questionnaires) were obtained for the sample
as criterion data. Correlations revealed statistically significant small to moderate
correlations between the predictors and the criterion data / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.Com. (Industrial & Organisational Psychology)

Interkulturelle Gemeinde : Gemeindeaufbau und Evangelisation in der zunehmend multikulturellen Bevölkerung deutsher Ballungsräume / The intercultural church : church development and evangelization in an increasing multicultural population in a German urban contextSchönberg, Klaus 22 January 2015 (has links)
Auswirkungen, die ein rein monokultureller Gemeindebau in multikultureller Umgebung hat / The objective of this missiological study is to determine which kind of church needs to be
built in a globalised and increasingly multicultural society, in order for all people to be able to
hear the gospel as good news.
In accordance with the method of contextual theology, the question is raised inductively, in
which kind of world we live today. Subsequently, a further inquiry is made into the Scriptures:
whether they answer fundamental questions about the issue of an increasingly multicultural
society. A reflection on the results of both steps leads to the establishment of key points
for the formation of an intercultural ecclesia. On the basis of the research results, hypotheses
about (mission)theological, evangelistic, socio-cultural and political relevance are developed.
The study presented reveals the significant, distinctive features of mono- and intercultural
church development. It describes the potential of the intercultural church for evangelism and
social transformation and outlines the social effects of purely monocultural church development
in a multi-cultural environment / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Practical Theology)

Die gebruik van kreatiwiteit in spelterapie met seksueel-misbruikte kinders / The utilization of creativity in play therapy with sexually abused childrenVan der Westhuizen, Hedwig Ruth 10 1900 (has links)
Creativity is the central concept of this research. The goal of the research was to explore the value of creativity in play therapy with sexually abused children in the multi-cultural South-African context.
The research was done from a constructivistic epistemological foundation and existential-phenomological paradigms. Extensive theoretical research was supported and substantiated by empirical research.
The theoretical research process focused on the holistic impact of sexual abuse on children in and as part of their specific context (field). It became clear that sexual abuse implies severe trauma for the child, and affects all of their modalities, and their functioning in their field. The impact of severe and ongoing sexual abuse on children, as complex post-traumatic stress disorder, was described to clarify their therapeutic needs.
A synthesis of gestalt-, person-centred- and logotherapy to address the traumatic after-effects of sexually abused children creatively in play therapy, was developed and described and motivated in the research paper. The concept of creativity was defined and extensively explored an applied in the context of therapy with sexually abused children. Creativity as a cognitive process, a problem solving process, and an artistic process is explored and applied in this context. The value of creative activities, the challenges of being a creative therapist, the supportive role of the supervisor and the systems in society, was explored and described.
The empirical research process was done in a participatory way in the form of a multiple case study. Five therapists followed a therapeutic process, according to the guideline, guidance and supervision of the researcher, with a child who had been severely sexually abused. The results from the research confirmed the value and necessity of creativity in dealing with the severe trauma of sexually abused children and bridging gaps in a multi-cultural setting.
The theoretical framework of the researcher and a guideline for creative therapy with sexually abused children was tested in the empirical research process, and could be refined and finalised.
It was concluded that the use of creativity is crucial in play therapy with sexually abused children in a multi-cultural context, such as South Africa. / Social Work / D. Diac. (Spelterapie)

"When voices meet" : Sharon Katz as musical activist during the apartheid era and beyondYudkoff, Ambigay 01 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the work of the performer, composer, educator, music therapist and activist Sharon Katz. Beginning in 1992, Katz made history in apartheid South Africa when she formed a 500-member choir that showcased both multi-cultural and multi- lingual songs in their staged the production, When Voices Meet, which incorporated music, songs and dance, intended to assist in promoting a peaceful transition to democracy in South Africa.
The success of the concerts of When Voices Meet led to Katz securing sponsorships to hire a train, “The Peace Train”, which transported 130 performers from city to city with media crews in tow. The performers’ mission on this journey was to create an environment of trust, of joy, and of sharing through music, across the artificially-imposed barriers of a racially segregated society.
This investigation includes several areas of inquiry: The South African Peace Train; the efforts of the non-profit Friends of the Peace Train; Katz’s work with Pennsylvania prisoners and boys at an American Reform School; the documentary When Voices Meet, and the American Peace Train Tour of July 2016, bringing the message of peace and harmony through song to racially and socio-economically divided Americans on a route that started in New York and culminated with a concert at UNESCO’s Mandela Day celebrations in Washington D. C. These endeavours are examined within the framework of musical activism.
The multi-faceted nature of Katz’s activism lends itself to an in-depth multiple case study. Qualitative case study methodology will be used to understand and theorise musical activism through detailed contextual analyses of five significant sets of related events. These include Katz’s work as a music therapist with prisoners in Pennsylvania and a Boys’ Reform School; as activist with The South African Peace Train of 1993; as humanitarian with Friends of the Peace Train; in making the documentary, When Voices Meet, and as activist with the American Peace Train Tour of 2016.
In documenting the grass-roots musical activism of Sharon Katz, I hope to contribute towards a gap in South African musicological history that would add to a more comprehensive understanding of musical activism and its role in social change. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / D.
