Metamaterial Lens Design

Shepard III, Ralph Hamilton January 2009 (has links)
Developments in nanotechnology and material science have produced optical materials with astonishing properties. Theory and experimentation have demonstrated that, among other properties, the law of refraction is reversed at an interface between a naturally occurring material and these so-called metamaterials. As the technology advances metamaterials have the potential to vastly impact the field of optical science. In this study we provide a foundation for future work in the area of geometric optics and lens design with metamaterials. The concept of negative refraction is extended to derive a comprehensive set of first-order imaging principles as well as an exhaustive aberration theory to 4th order. Results demonstrate congruence with the classical theory; however, negative refraction introduces a host of novel properties. In terms of aberration theory, metamaterials present the lens designer with increased flexibility. A singlet can be bent to produce either positive or negative spherical aberration (regardless of its focal length), its contribution to coma can become independent of its conjugate factor, and its field curvature takes on the opposite sign of its focal power. This is shown to be advantageous in some designs such as a finite conjugate relay lens; however, in a wider field of view landscape lens we demonstrate a metamaterial's aberration properties may be detrimental. This study presents the first comprehensive investigation of metamaterial lenses using industry standard lens design software. A formal design study evaluates the performance of doublet and triplet lenses operating at F/5 with a 100 mm focal length, a 20° half field of view, and specific geometric constraints. Computer aided optimization and performance evaluation provide experimental controls to remove designer-induced bias from the results. Positive-index lenses provide benchmarks for comparison to metamaterial systems subjected to identical design constraints. We find that idiosyncrasies in a metamaterial lens' aberration content can be exploited to produce imaging systems that are superior to their conventional counterparts. However, in some circumstances the reduced low-order aberration content in a metamaterial lens reduces the effectiveness of aberration balancing and stop shifting. Through a series of design experiments the relative advantages and challenges of using metamaterials in lens design are revealed.

Mechanismus dopadů záporných úrokových sazeb na čistou úrokovou marži bank / Mechanism of Negative Interest Rate's Influence on Bank Net Interest Margin

Fan, Yingxuan January 2021 (has links)
Net interest margin (NIM) is an important indicator of a bank's operational efficiency. Based on the balance sheet data of 189 major listed banks in Europe from 2010 to 2019, this thesis studies the bank's NIM mechanism in a negative interest rate environment. This thesis focuses on the system GMM method and the results show that the policy interest rate is positively related to NIM in the long run and negatively related in the short run, but the relationship between the two is not significant in the short run. Moreover, in a negative interest rate environment, bank NIM's sensitivity to policy interest rates has greatly increased, especially the policy of interest rate cuts. In addition, the sensitivity of NIMs of different banks to policy interest rates also differs significantly. Generally, the NIMs of banks with a high degree of internationalization and larger size are less sensitive to changes in policy interest rates, while the NIMs of banks with a higher share of retail business in their total business are more sensitive to changes in policy interest rates. Finally, through the value-at-risk analysis and stress test, this thesis concludes that the policy interest rate, net loan-to-asset ratio, non-performing loan ratio and inflation rate are sensitive factors of NIM. When NIM is subject to a...

A ARITMÉTICA DO JOGO DO NIM NO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL / THE ARITHMETIC OF NIM GAME FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Welter, Jocemar Rodrigo 26 August 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / With intention to revive the interest in mathematics in a group of elementary school students is that this work was conceived. We had the wish to teach the fundamentals of arithmetic with the clear purpose of reviewing the four basic operations, without the students realized they would be doing repetitive and tedious processes. We would also like to extend mathematical knowledge beyond textbooks and, instigate them to do historical researches and asking for resolutions of related problems. The initial strategy was teach the Nim game, a traditional didactic game that has several versions, all with unique instructional purposes, understand and apply in various ways the division algorithm. We took advantage of this initial stimulus to introduce for thirteen classes, various ingredients and formulas that are often obtained via recurrence, divisibility criteria and even historically famous conjectures. In this work we make an account of all these activities, making reflections on the theory and pedagogical practice and giving opinions on the receptivity of the students of the sixth year of E.M.E.F. Doutor Ulisses Rodrigues, at each step, and present several other Nim game versions for possible applications in practical classes on basic arithmetic.

[en] BINARY NUMBERS: A TEACHING PROPOSAL FOR THE BASIC EDUCATION LEVEL / [pt] NÚMEROS BINÁRIOS: UMA PROPOSTA DE ENSINO PARA A EDUCAÇÃO BÁSICA

ANA CAROLINA VARGAS FREDERICO 09 September 2020 (has links)
[en] This work presents a proposal for teaching binary numbers in the basic education level through playful and motivating activities based on: a trick to perform a (magic) of guessing, a secret message that needs to be unveiled and a game called Nim, which has a winning strategy developed and demonstrated by the mathematician Charles L. Bouton. We begin with a conceptual approach on the positional numeral system and the base 10, and then we will talk about the binary numeral system and its relevant aspects. We introduce the theory that underlies the binary magic cards and analyze Boutons winning strategy for Nim, including a fresh view on that strategy. Subsequently, we describe the three proposed activities that can be applied in classes of Elementary II and High School. We conclude presenting the methodology and considerations about the application of these activities in the ninth grade classes at a public school in the municipality of Guapimirim, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The objectives of the present study were: i) to evaluate the efficiency of pyroligneous extract (PE) at four concentrations: 0; 0.01; 0.02; 0.04 (PE/water, relationship v/v) on control of Meloidogyne incognita race 1 in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cv. Santa Cruz Kada Gigante and Rotylenchulus reniformis in melon (Cucumis melo) cv. Amarelo Ouro, under greenhouse, and ii) to determine acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) and neen (Azadirachta indica) oil effect on hatching, penetration and reproduction of M. incognita race 1 in melon and sugarcane (Saccharum sp.). In the study with pyroligneous treatments were arranged in a factorial 2 (nematode infested and no infested soil) × 4 (pyroligneous extract concentrations), in completely radomized design with six replications, consisting each experimental unit in a plant per vase. Soilinfestation with 5,000 eggs of R. reniformis or M. incognita per vase was carried out 10 and 15 days after melon and tomato germination, respectively, being applied in soil 50 mL of pyroligneous extract at studied concentration 24 hours after the infestation. Two complementary pulverizations with pyroligneous extract were applied 15 and 30 days after the first one. Evaluations were carried out 55 (melon) and 65 (tomato) days after planting. For both parasites, there were not significant interactions between soil infestation and pyroligneous extract concentrations in relation to plant development and nematode reproduction. Plants cultivated in unimfested soil presented higher (P≤0,05) shoot biomass than those cultivated in infested soil, however, the extract did not suppress R. reniformis and M. incognita reproduction. In the study with ASM and neenoil, it was carried out five experiments, one in laboratory conditions and four under greenhouse. In the laboratory experiment, hatching of M. incognita was evaluated 48 and 168 hours after eggs exposure to ASM (0.05 g/L and 0.50 g/L), neen oil (1 and 2%) and water (control). In the greenhouse experiments, penetration in melon cv. Amarelo Ouro roots of second stage juveniles (J2) hatched under ASM, neen oil and water was evaluated seven days after inoculation. In another experiment, eggs of the parasite, exposed for 172 hours to products and concentrations used earlier, were inoculated in melon and 45 days after it was evaluated reproduction. Other experiments were carried out in sugarcane var. RB 92-759 and SP 813250, being investigated relation between products application and inoculation time, and interactions among products, nematode and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The results pointed out direct effect of neenoil on M. incognita hatching. Exposuring J2 to ASM decreased nematode penetration in root, but eggs exposure to this compound did not affect nematode reproduction. In contrast, The ASM application in sugarcane decreased nematode reproduction, but it did not affect plant development. AMF suppressed M. incognita reproducton and improved plant development. Neem oil did not affect plant development and nematode reproduction.

Combinatorial Games on Graphs

Williams, Trevor K. 01 May 2017 (has links)
Combinatorial games are intriguing and have a tendency to engross students and lead them into a serious study of mathematics. The engaging nature of games is the basis for this thesis. Two combinatorial games along with some educational tools were developed in the pursuit of the solution of these games. The game of Nim is at least centuries old, possibly originating in China, but noted in the 16th century in European countries. It consists of several stacks of tokens, and two players alternate taking one or more tokens from one of the stacks, and the player who cannot make a move loses. The formal and intense study of Nim culminated in the celebrated Sprague-Grundy Theorem, which is now one of the centerpieces in the theory of impartial combinatorial games. We study a variation on Nim, played on a graph. Graph Nim, for which the theory of Sprague-Grundy does not provide a clear strategy, was originally developed at the University of Colorado Denver. Graph Nim was first played on graphs of three vertices. The winning strategy, and losing position, of three vertex Graph Nim has been discovered, but we will expand the game to four vertices and develop the winning strategies for four vertex Graph Nim. Graph Theory is a markedly visual field of mathematics. It is extremely useful for graph theorists and students to visualize the graphs they are studying. There exists software to visualize and analyze graphs, such as SAGE, but it is often extremely difficult to learn how use such programs. The tools in GeoGebra make pretty graphs, but there is no automated way to make a graph or analyze a graph that has been built. Fortunately GeoGebra allows the use of JavaScript in the creation of buttons which allow us to build useful Graph Theory tools in GeoGebra. We will discuss two applets we have created that can be used to help students learn some of the basics of Graph Theory. The game of thrones is a two-player impartial combinatorial game played on an oriented complete graph (or tournament) named after the popular fantasy book and TV series. The game of thrones relies on a special type of vertex called a king. A king is a vertex, k, in a tournament, T, which for all x in T either k beats x or there exists a vertex y such that k beats y and y beats x. Players take turns removing vertices from a given tournament until there is only one king left in the resulting tournament. The winning player is the one which makes the final move. We develop a winning position and classify those tournaments that are optimal for the first or second-moving player.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of oral administration of Neem oil on the reproductive function and metabolic profile of crossbred Santa Inês sheep. Thirty animals were divided into four groups (G): GI - control, oral administration of 20 mL of water per animal; GII, GIII and GIV – oral administration of 1, 2 and 3 mL of neem oil/kg body weight (BW), respectively, for seven days. Testis size was estimated and semen was collected twice a week for 93 days to evaluate physical and morphological aspects. Blood samples were collected on days D1, D4, D8, D30, D60 and D90 for determination of plasma testosterone and plasma metabolic profile of the animals. At the end of the experimental period, the animals were slaughtered, and the testes were collected, weighed and sampled for histological evaluations. There was a linear decrease (P˂0.05) for weight gain. A linear decrease (P˂0.05) was observed for semen volume, sperm vigor, turmoil, progressive motility, and sperm concentration. A linear increase (P<0.05) was observed for major defects, and a linear decrease (P<0.05), for minor defects. There was no difference (P>0.05) for total defects. Scrotal circumference and testicular consistency decreased linearly (P<0.05). For the morphometric data of the testes, a difference was observed (P<0.05) for Leydig cell volume, volume of tissue and volume of intertubular space. However, there was no difference (P>0.05) for testis weight, gonadosomatic index, volumetric basal lamina, lumen, germinal epithelium, connective tissue, seminiferous tubule, intertubular space, volume of blood and lymph vessels, seminiferous tubule volume, total length of the seminiferous tubules, total length of seminiferous tubules per testicular gram, leydigosomatic index and tubulosomatic index. In the metabolic profile, a quadratic decrease (P<0.05) was observed for LDL and a quadratic increase (P<0.05), for plasma VLDL and triglycerides. There was no difference (P>0.05) for plasma concentration of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, urea and testosterone. Oral administration of Neem oil at concentrations of up to 3 mL/kg body weight for 7 days produced damage to the reproductive function of crossbred Santa Inês sheep. It was shown to be dose dependent and poisoned the animals at the highest concentration.

Juss.: Meliaceae) is a plant species originating in India introduced to Brazil mainly due to its insecticidal properties. However, the effect of such insecticidal properties on floral visitors, wild or reared, is not known. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of this plant species to Apis mellifera and its importance as a source of pollen and nectar for beekeeping. Experiments on the neem floral biology, floral visitors, A. mellifera colony development in areas with and without neem in the caatnga a coastal vegetations and larval and adult survivalship when fed with pollen or nectar of neem in controlled environment were carried out in the bee labs of the Universidade Federal do Ceará - UFC, Universidade Estadual Vale do Acaraú - UVA and private properties in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Results showed that all neem individuals studied bore bissexual flowers, with anthesis occurring around 16:00h and most flower buds presenting receptive stigmas and releasing pollen, though still unviable, 24h before anthesis. The highest pollen viability was observed at anthesis. Flowers of A. indica produced nectar in diminute amounts that did not allow sampling with capilars. Apis mellifera workers were the only floral visitors registered showing higher frequency early in the morning, when searching for pollen and nectar, and pollinating neem flowers. The wind played no role in neem pollination. Results also showed that honeybee colonies placed in the area with neem produced significantly (p<0.05) larger brood area than those palcedwhere neem was absent, both in caatinga and coastal vegetations. This difference was significanlty (p<0.05) greater in caatinga, where there were less natural resources during the dry season than in the coastal vegetation. Regarding brood mortality, that in caatinga with neem was higher (p<0.05) than thaof coastal vegetation with neem, and when compared within the same biome, brood mortality in colonies placed in areas with neem was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in colonies of areas without neem. Despite brood mortality be higher in areas with neem, such mortality percentual was less than 10%, and within normal mortality parameters for honeybee brood. Under controlled environment, adult A. mellifera fed exclusively on neem were the ones with the shortest lifespan, but as neem was progressively replaced in the diet for other food sources, the worker lifespan increased. Flower odor per si did not produce repelence nor affect bee lifespan. Honeybee brood reared in artificial cups in the lab receiving larval food + neem pollen presented 100% mortality, significantly (p<0.05) higher than the other treatments (larval food, larval food + 100% pollen from other sources, larval food + 50% pollen from other sources + 50% neem pollen). It was concluded that the use of neem in association with other sources of pollen and nectar seems to estimulate colony growth due to the augment in food availability compensating, in populational terms, the increase in brood mortality. This effect seems to be inversally proportional to the scarcity of other floral resources, being as higher as shorter becomes the availability of other sources of pollen and nectar. However, both neem pollen and neem nectar are toxic for adults and larvas of A. mellifera, and it is not advisable its use as exclusive food source to these bees. Regarding other floral vistors of caatinga and coastal vegetation fauna, apparently neem does not constitute any threat or food resource, because no native species was observed exploiting this plant species. There is a need for further studies to determine safety levels for use of neem in beekeeping, to learn about other possible effects on A. mellifera individuals and colony and to investigate better the relationship of this plant species with native floral visitors.
