Nancy Newhall and Environmentalism: Art, Activism, and Land Preservation

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: During the politically charged period between the 1950s and 1970s in the United States, Nancy Newhall emerged as an important advocate for open space. She began traveling to the West which encouraged her dedication to land preservation and invigorated her enthusiasm for photography. Newhall was already a respected curator and author addressing the communicative roles of photographs. After spearheading groundbreaking museum retrospectives of contemporary photographers she expanded her artistic vison to include conservation activism. The notable photographers, scholars, writers, and politicians with whom she collaborated often overshadowed her contributions, and they have been under celebrated until recently. My project studies her efforts on a quintessential Sierra Club publication from 1960. While considering her book titled This Is The American Earth I was led to insightful explorations of her unique approach to contextualizing photographs. My investigations revealed the impact that the work of Nancy Newhall had on land preservation, alongside her prolonged influence on the acceptance of photography as fine art and a resilient device of communication. In This Is The American Earth her calculated, inspired approach, attaching text to photos conveyed stirring messages to readers and forwarded an innovative use of a genre that the Sierra Club willingly embraced. Working with its president and Ansel Adams, she edited, wrote, and published several popular illustrated volumes which brought an interpretation of open space into American living rooms. Her efforts produced iconic picture books that remain memorable examples of the mid-20th century conservation movement. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Art History 2016

This thesis aims to study the novel Lignes de faille (2006), by Nancy Huston, Anglophone writer who adopts French as her writing language from the moment she moves and settles permanently in France. The search for identity and the questioning of the stories recorded in History, foundation themes for the construction of the book, to which is proposed a post-modern reading, are intended to be studied from the author's own critical views, stated in her essay books A espécie fabuladora (2010) and Nord perdu (1999). Besides the view of History and identity as fiction, presented by her in A espécie fabuladora, just as well as the inseparable linguistic issue that pervades every identity discussion, introduced in Nord perdu, it is proposed a deepening of the reflections with the concepts of historical metafiction (HUTCHEON, 1991), to look at the concept of History used in the novel; the application of the concept of the postmodern subject (HALL, 1999) to rethink the identity issues and, in general, the problematization of the concept of in-betweenness disclosed by Bhabha (BHABHA, 1999).

Reconhecimento como Teoria Critica? : a formulação de Axel Honneth / Recognition as Critical theory? : The formulation of Axel Honneth

The theme of this dissertation is the reconstruction of the Critical Theory of Society through the formulation of a model of theory of recognition by the German philosopher and sociologist Axel Honneth. For that, it was made an investigation of his work grounded in the heritage Honneth received from that tradition, as founded in the 1930s by Max Horkheimer and his colleagues of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, and also in the revisions and critics to Critical Theory in subsequent decades, mainly those of Jürgen Habermas. Thus, it was possible to find the relations of rupture and continuity between the theoretical model developed by Honneth and the theoretical tradition to which he claims affiliation. Later, the model of Honneth itself was the subject of the investigation, with particular emphasis on its reconstruction of the typology developed by Hegel to the idea of recognition. This movement, central to the theory of recognition, leads to the typologies of recognition (love, rights and solidarity) and disrespect (violence, denial of rights and denigration or insult), which represent, according to the author, social relations guided by normative expectations of the subjects involved. When these are disrespected, comes to field a struggle for recognition. Finally, after examining the construction of Honneth's model, this also was confronted with some of the criticisms and objections that their ideas brought to social debates, through the study of his discussion with Nancy Fraser and her theory of redistribution in order to open a debate about the present forms of reconstructing Critical Theory / Mestrado / Teoria Sociológica / Mestre em Sociologia

A tradução original / The original translation

The produced and spread discourse in the contemporary theoretical context of language studies - and particularly of translation studies - seems to more and more grant in favor of the precariousness of the absolute distinctions. Being classified as systematic, traditional, classical, and conventional, distinctions such as theory and practice, body and spirit, original and translation would mark what would require a redeeming approach. Designed fundamentally from the models of continental philosophy, such discourses ascribe to the 20th century the overcoming of the aforementioned distinctions, and the erasing of the boundaries which, accordingly, would threaten the success of the sacred democratic project. However, once boundaries are renounced and distinctions are revoked, an ambiguous, transterritorial space founded on the primordial coincidence of legitimate identities arises - in a sense, the space occupied by Applied Linguistics and intended by Translation Studies. Consequently, most of the time what is produced is a totalitarian discourse that emphasizes what it supposedly abandons, i.e., highlights the prohibition mechanism and repeats (reproduces) the presumably disowned logic of symbolization. Acknowledging such context, and taking into account the experience of Canadian writer Nancy Huston, this study considers the status of self-translation as a practice that (1) interdicts the totalitarian discourses of both language and translation studies contemporarily produced, and (2) arises as performative practice that exposes the theoretical limits of any models in which ethics appears as an institutionalized space of both sacralization of difference and celebration of exception / Mestrado / Teoria, Pratica e Ensino da Tradução / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

L'agence André au temps de Jacques et Michel (Nancy, 1929-1973) : architecture, réseaux et filiations / The André agency in the time of Jacques and Michel (Nancy, 1929-1973) : architecture, networks and filiations

Bauer, Caroline 27 November 2015 (has links)
Our study focuses on the André agency between 1929 and 1973, period of activity of thebrothers Jacques and Michel André, architect and engineer. We question their production inits spatial and historical context, in the light of the notions of filiation and networks. Comingfrom a large dynasty of architects in Lorraine, they benefit from both material and intellectuallegacy. This rooting, supported by the teeming École de Nancy in the early century, promotes close networks as well as international cultural exchanges. The André brothersextend this critical dynamic by getting involved in the Comité Nancy-Paris, the Union desartistes modernes (UAM) and the L'Architecture d'aujourd'hui magazine. During the Interwarperiod, they were the first architects to work sustainably with Jean Prouvé, before associatingClaude, the son of the later, to the agency in the 1960s. Close to local building contractors, the two brothers question the constructive value of architecture: they focus on reaching ontechnical perfection and experimentation on materials. This research goes through theirproduction, since their first major achievement, the Institute of Zoology, inspired by FrankLloyd Wright’s processes, to the museum of iron history, symbol of the region's industrialglory. While the 1930s are a period of creativity, the agency develops postwar the toolsneeded to face intense order, in particular postal, and shifts toward a quest for productivity. The André agency thus constitutes a privileged witness to the upheavals of architecturalproduction during the 20th century.

Primary Compositional Characteristics in the Instrumental Music of Paul Lansky as Demonstrated in Hop (1993)

Willie, Eric Jason 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation provides insight into the compositional characteristics of Paul Lansky's instrumental works as demonstrated in Hop (1993). As well, this document intends to make Hop more approachable to performers through a structural, harmonic, and rhythmic analysis. This dissertation presents a brief overview of Lansky's biographical information, discusses background information about Marimolin (the ensemble that premiered the piece), and provides an analysis of Hop. Hop is analyzed with regard to form, harmony, and rhythm. The analysis was conducted through a tonal approach, and harmonies are identified with a lead sheet analysis. Personal interviews with Paul Lansky and marimbist Nancy Zeltsman provided significant insight into Lansky's influences, musical characteristics, as well as other elements pertaining to Hop.

The status of love in philosophy : an examination of the role of love (eros) in the work (or works) of selected French thinkers

Kourie, Mark 16 November 2012 (has links)
This dissertation exposes the status of eros in the works of Levinas, Irigaray, and, Nancy. I begin by evaluating Levinas’s phenomenological analyses of eros in Time and the Other and Totality and Infinity. In order to fully appreciate this, however, I must necessarily also provide a summary overview of the central theme which guides Levinas’s work: ‘the Other.’ This leads Levinas to develop ethics as first philosophy, which in turn implies that the reduction of the Other to the same is the unethical gesture par excellence. Levinas formulates eros as the ‘equivocal par excellence’; a profane relation with the radical alterity of the feminine. Eros, for Levinas, inevitably lapses back to the economy of the same, and hence he looks to paternal fecundity to understand a relation with alterity untainted by erotic sensuality. Moreover, I identify the themes in Levinas’s work which guide this dissertation: the plurality of being, the tactility of erotic caressing, transcendence in eros, sexual difference, the affair between love and death, revisiting Plato’s Symposium, and, the erotic relationship with alterity. Having exposed these themes, and pre-empting a feminist critique of Levinas, I move on to the work of Luce Irigaray. After contextualising Irigaray’s feminist project, I expose and evaluate her critical reading of Levinas, particularly in her essay “The Fecundity of the Caress.” For Irigaray, Levinas mistakenly assumes a universal masculine subject, which in turn denies the feminine (and thus empirical women) a chance to be subjects. The fact that Levinas considers eros profane suggests, for Irigaray, that Levinas’s phenomenology of eros is haunted by a patriarchal bias evinced in the way he turns to paternity to salvage eros from a damnable carnality. Irigaray, in contrast, asserts eros as a relationship between the two real poles of sexual alterity. Eros thus holds potential as a just relation between the sexes. However, I find that Irigaray’s insistence on the biological markers of sexual difference becomes somewhat too idealistic. When compared with one another, Irigaray and Levinas arrive at an impasse which is solved by turning to the work of Jean-Luc Nancy. Nancy insists that love (including eros) cannot be thought as anything but an indefinite multiplicity. Nancy’s thought on love reflects his formulation of ‘being-singular-plural,’ an ontology which asserts ‘being-with’ is axiomatic in all philosophical investigations. In Shattered Love, Nancy deconstructs dialectics in order to show that love does not operate in a dialectical fashion. Both Levinas’s and Irigaray’s accounts of eros are exposed as dialectical. Nancy, in contrast, formulates love and sex/gender as the exposure of a subject to the relation with the other. Moreover, by examining Nancy’s thought on the body, eros can be derived as subtending all relations between sexed bodies. Thus Nancy figures eros as neither ideal nor profane, nor does he restrict eros to an ideal relation between the masculine and the feminine. However, Nancy’s opaque philosophy is not without fault. Although Nancy offers an interesting way in which to think eros, certain avenues of thought remain unexplored. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Philosophy / unrestricted

Subsistence Practices at Nancy Patterson Village

Whisenhunt, Elizabeth C. M. 09 April 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to gain an insight into the macrobotanical subsistence practices of Nancy Patterson Village and see how those practices fit in with the practices of the general Mesa Verde region by analyzing the burnt macrobotanical remains found in processed flotation samples. Previous work done at Nancy Patterson Village showed a shift in the faunal subsistence practices to a greater reliance on domesticated turkey during the Pueblo III period. However, the macro botanical analysis showed a higher richness of wild plant taxa in the Pueblo III period when compared to Pueblo II. The change to a higher richness of plant taxa in the later period is attributed to the changes in social and environmental climates causing difficulties in sustaining the population. These difficulties pushed the inhabitants to expand their selection of plant types used for food. Despite the higher richness of plant taxa in Pueblo III, other sites from the Central Mesa Verde region had higher richness. However, Nancy Patterson Village used the smaller number of wild plants types more intensely than the other sites from the region. No explanation was found to explain this difference.

Trottier, André 12 April 2018 (has links)
At the crossroads of novel writing and translation, Nancy Huston's novels Plainsong and Cantique des plaines bring up simultaneously the issues of language and gender, but perhaps, even more so, the problem of literarity. This study will tend to demonstrate that Nancy Huston's self-translation cannot be reduced to a simple discontinuous process concept (discontinuous chronologically through the very making of the novel - discontinuous through the author's use of different languages), but rather points to a quite singular and continuous process, which is the expression of a most personnal and original style.
