Televising Memory: The Tenth Anniversary of 9/11Plumlee, Jennifer 13 April 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the formation of national memory by exploring tenth anniversary television coverage of 9/11. By analyzing themes of nationalism that structure the television specials and create a positive national memory, this thesis argues that the national memory of 9/11 serves current national goals and develops myths of American exceptionalism while it ignores the negative consequences and realities of 9/11.

In Brazil at the nineteenth century, the political emancipation process followed by a construction of a particular national memory process to legitimize the new regime that was established. The stage where these issues will be develop the literature, through Romanticism, would be able to express the main Brazil’s characteristics as a nation. The Indian, associated with the nature, appears as a major literary subjects, as it was seen as an element with conditions of expressing the Brazilian specificity. In this construction process, politics and literature come together, in an inseparable way. Thinking about the internal logic of José de Alencar's work, our goal is to analyze the way in which the author builds his literature concepts and nationality and how these concepts articulate cultural issues and issues of power, based on the representation that the author builds about the Indian in two fictional narrative: the Guarani (1857) and Iracema (1865).

Differences Between National Memory of Communism in Poland and the Czech RepublicBush, Graham January 2014 (has links)
This work aims to demonstrate differences in national memory of Communism in the Czech Republic and Poland. It looks into the principles surrounding the practice of collective memory and then uses this to create a working methodology for the study of it in these two nations. In evaluating memory in these countries it relies upon the "Three Pillars" of past events, cultural output and popular opinion and stresses the interconnected nature of these academic areas. A further emphasis is placed upon the role of belief in shaping personal and group self-identity. The overall conclusions stress that both of the national memory of these countries has been shaped by their history, culture and popular opinion, and that this has created a divide between the Polish and Czech views of events during the Communist period. The divide is seen as characterised by particular "Czech" and "Polish" viewpoints which are the product of discourse on previous aspects of what it means to belong to these respective groups. National memory in essence builds upon itself, and will continue to do so. Future perceptions of what it means to be Czech or Polish will be shaped by this latest chapter in national memory.

Le référent historique dans le contentieux constitutionnel comparé / The historical argument in the constitutional comparative lawLajoinie, Tamara 17 December 2016 (has links)
This research intends to demonstrate that the historical argument has a decisive impact on constitutional decisions as well as on the substance of fundamental rights and freedoms. History, being systematized in comparative law, through the form of a standard legal argument, contributes, via constitutional review, to the establishment as well to the operation of the rule oflaw, today. The immediate legal logic of such historical impregnation will be analysed through the work of the judge in the motivation of its decisions. In the same perspective, the singular meaning of historical events and their positive or negative impact, feeds judicial interpretation, either breaking away from a tragic historical event or consolidating a glorious historicalheritage. The judge, in accordance with his new social function recognized in western democracies, is lead to repare directly or indirectly, the damages resulting from historical events as well as to strenghten or limitate the scope of fundamental rights, which appear today, historically situated
