"On the mat": an exploration of the impact of new entrant children's classroom and home experiences on their understandings of what counts as reading

Clarke, Michelle Violet January 2007 (has links)
This study explores the ways that the classroom and home experiences of two New Entrant children contributed to their understandings of what counts as reading. Multiple method data collection included continuous recordings of classroom reading activities over a 16-week period and interviews undertaken over a 13-month period. Microanalysis of classroom events provided accounts of the children's engagement with reading tasks during reading instruction, which were then explored in relation to the ways the two children discussed reading during interviews. Findings revealed that children take on multiple roles during classroom activities which impact on their participation in reading tasks. The significance of the social aspects of learning to read is also highlighted. It was revealed that what children actually learned and the types of reading responses they made during class activities were only rarely visible or audible to their teacher. The children's management of their learning environment meant that many reading opportunities were used in different ways from those intended by the teacher, and that learning was often only indirectly related to teaching. The implication for teachers is the need to consider how little of children's learning experiences are audible or visible to them, so that they can develop strategies to provide appropriate reading instruction and adequate reading experiences. The study also revealed the critical role that "homework" (reading at home) plays in ensuring sufficient reading practice for emergent and early readers.

An analysis of rightsourcing in the electricity supply industry / Nerisha Pillay

Pillay, Nerisha January 2011 (has links)
The country is currently experiencing a tight electricity schedule. The demand for greater capacity than the country can supply is a reality. Raising unemployment and poverty levels are a situation we contend with daily. The aim of the study is to create a generic framework for right–sourcing in the electricity supply industry. The various phases of strategy creation were analysed to achieve this target. The process of identifying core business processes was discussed. Strategic alignment is important for the success of the Information Technology strategy; this study discussed how this could be accomplished. The various Information Technology sourcing strategies were examined. The probability of a process being outsourced, stemmed from the simplicity and repetitiveness of a transaction or process, and costs involved. An empirical study was done with both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The study looked at Contract Management, Information Technology Strategy and Benchmarking. A comprehensive right–sourcing framework was developed to assist in making the correct decisions. This framework could guide new entrants to the ESI in helping them shape their strategy and formulate a distinct competitive advantage. It could assist them in meeting the growing capacity demands faster and making a significant positive contribution to the economy. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Wisén, Ann-Charlotte, Stolt Olsson, Helena January 2018 (has links)
Starting a new employment is a challenge filled with emotions such as expectationand joy but also of uncertainty and stress. Depending on the response from managerand colleagues, as well as how the organization works with the introductory process, the possibility of organizational socialization for the new employee is affected. Thepurpose of our study has been to through semi‐structured interviews study how socializationis perceived for new employees in a government organization and in a privatebusiness. Based on previous research about introduction, onboarding processesand organizational socialization, we have used theories from, among others, Mead,Cooley, Bauman and Asplund to understand and interpret the statements of the informants. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of a formal introductoryprogram for the new employee but also the importance of being well treated inorder of to delivering according to expectations and willingness to stay at the newworkplace. In comparisons between the government and the private organization it isstated that the need for security and feeling welcome is independent of whether youwork state or private.

Hansson, Pontus, Backmark, Jonas January 2014 (has links)
The Swedish market for vehicle inspection is re-regulated since June 2010. More than four years after the re-regulation there are eight companies in the market. Two of these companies are a result of the former monopolist's owners divided the business among themselves. The remaining six companies have entered the market through acquisitions or by building up their business from scratch, these are known as new entrants in the study. The competition has developed slowly and the former monopolist still has the highest market share. Industry conditions are to say the least special because the companies and technicians have to have individual licenses in the form of accreditation and certification, which causes high establishment barriers. The study has the aim of contributing to the knowledge of new entrants on the re-regulated vehicle inspection market. In particular, the new entrant’s establishment and their strategic choices are studied to find out how they act to market conditions in order to create competitive advantages. The study is based on four questions: Main Question: How do new entrants create competitive advantages in the vehicle inspection market? Sub query 1: How’s the new entrants view on the competitive situation? Sub query 2: How do the new entrants establish their station-/s? Sub query 3: What strategies do the new entrants use to strengthen its position against competitors? The essay is based on an empirical survey and is designed as a case study with four units of analysis that represent four new inspection companies in the market for vehicle inspection. Data were collected through interviews with people in key positions of the four companies, as well with a person of the authority whose task is to monitor market developments, namely the Transport Agency. Furthermore, also documents issued by the authorities and new entrants were reviewed. The conclusions that the study has come up with is that the new entrants create competitive advantages through a favorable placement of stations, a bit outside the city center. The strict regulation doesn’t allow the new entrants to create competitive advantages through new or modified inspection services. Based on these regulations the new entrants are trying to attract customers through enhanced service and additional services to the inspection. They try to create a total offering to the customer where the obligatory inspection service is included.

Entering renewable electricity production : An actor perspective

Mignon, Ingrid January 2014 (has links)
Although energy transition is considered one of the main challenges of our time, little attention has traditionally been paid to the actors participating in this transition, such as the producers of renewable electricity. Previous energy policy literature and policy- makers have assumed that these producers are incumbent actors of the current energy system, that is to say, large utilities producing both renewable and fossil-fueled electricity. In reality, new types of producers are entering the renewable electricity production market, without much (if any) previous experience in that industry. This Licentiate thesis studies the new entrants of renewable electricity production in order to identify their motives, their responses to policies, and their ways of implementing their projects. This is conducted through the analysis of 37 cases of new entrants in Sweden. A theoretical background, a complete description of the methods, and an overall presentation of the findings are presented in the first part of the thesis, and in the second part of the thesis, four scientific papers studying the new entrants of renewable electricity production from complementary theoretical approaches are presented. Results show that the new entrant group is heterogeneous in several ways. They have different motives, they are affected by different drivers and pressures, and they are faced with different challenges during their entry processes. Despite that, their share of investments represents the majority of those currently being made in renewable electricity production in Sweden. Based on these results, policy implications are drawn and, in particular, the need for policy-makers and energy policy literature to acknowledge the particularities of the new entrants is highlighted.

國營事業新進人員工作滿意對組織承諾影響之探討—以C國營事業為對象 / A Study on the Effect of Job Satisfaction on Organizational Commitment of New Entrants in A State-owned Enterprise: A Case of State-owned Enterprise C

Chen, Yu Chen Unknown Date (has links)
In the 1990s, state-owned enterprises stopped the use of new entrants in cooperation with the privatization policy and only gradually recovered in the 2000s. In recent years, the government has been working hard to improve the manpower structure of state-run enterprises and speed up manpower metabolism by systematically planning to loosen the employment system of state-owned enterprises Employee. The job satisfaction and organizational commitment of new entrants in state-owned enterprises will have a tremendous impact on the future development and operation of the state-owned enterprises to which they belong, and more on the efficiency and competitiveness of the organization. Therefore, this study is satisfied with the work of new personnel in state-owned enterprises, the organization promises to explore the key points, at the same time, it analyzes the individual background changes of variables and job satisfaction, organizational commitment and the job satisfaction of the newly recruited state- The impact of commitment, and to conduct a questionnaire survey data collection. After the analysis of the survey results found: 1.There are significant differences in terms of job satisfaction among the newly recruited state-owned enterprises with different "years of service", "categories of personnel" and "job titles". 2.The new staff of state-owned enterprises with different "age", "seniority", "type of personnel" and "job title" have significant differences in the organizational commitment aspects. 3.Job satisfaction of newly recruited state-owned enterprises has significant correlation with organizational commitment and shows a very high degree of positive correlation. 4.Job Satisfaction of New Staff in State-owned Enterprises Achieve Significant Positive Effect on Various Facets of Organizational Commitment. Based on the results of the relevant research and analysis, suggestions are made for the reference of the competent state-run business administrations, state-owned institutions and newly recruited personnel so as to enhance the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of the newly recruited staff.

L’influence de la surabondance informationnelle sur le non-recours au tutorat méthodologique en première année universitaire / The impact of information overload over the non-use of methodological tutoring in first academic year

Pourcelot, Charlotte 04 December 2015 (has links)
French universities are in crisis because the failure and dropout rates among students have remained high for years. The existing reforms or those being tested are all pursuing the same purpose: achievement. When many assistive devices are now offered to students, this work will be dedicated to the further development of works undertaken on the non-use of methodological tutoring. For this purpose, it will interrogate the variable “information” and will focus on three hypotheses.- Freshmen have limited focusing capacities which do not allow them to make reasonable choices.- Information overload in the first university years does not allow students to use the methodological tutoring. - The “committed” students, who receive clear information about the potential and objectives of this aid scheme and who use it in the best possible manner, succeed. We have used two complementary survey tools to test them.First, twenty-two tutors have been interviewed, as well as the director of studies and university life and three directors of Training and Research Faculty. The results of such qualitative on-site investigations show that methodological tutoring is suffering from lack of information, and efforts must be made in this field. Sources of improvement, in order to inform efficiently the newcomers and increase the attendance rate in tutoring sessions, are thus introduced.Second, 392 freshmen, from the three faculties of the University of Haute-Alsace (UHA), completed questionnaires we gave them. This survey was conducted to determine if undergraduates had been well informed about the potential and objectives of the methodological tutoring and to establish a link between the student using a personalized methodological or educational support and the support mechanism itself in the achievement of the objectives of the plan. The potential of such a tool has been questioned, as well as the characteristics of its users in Ben Abid-Zarrouk’s « modèle d’efficacité individuelle d’un dispositif d’accompagnement méthodologique ou pédagogique » (2013).This research shows that students, who establish optimal achievement strategies, care about information related to the potential of success assistance schemes, find it useful and are then satisfied with it, can make it better than the others, including the tutored ones. So, based upon factor analysis, this cohort can be divided into five classes: “The School-goers”, “The Idle Ones”, The Stragglers”, “The Blameless”, “The Unsuitable Ones”, and eight variables related to tutoring have been characterized.
