Men and women matching models and its applications

Chan, Po Hsiang Unknown Date (has links)
In recent years, more and more single women and men hope that they can find their Mr. or Mrs. Right through the internet dating platform. This paper considers the operation of an internet dating platform which expects each participant to find the other half of each other. We propose mathematical models of the women and men matching problem by using the mathematical model of the assignment problem and integrating the idea of matching problem as well as the stable roommate problem. We also consider the problems of multiple dating objects, matching with rejection, and classification member. Finally, a simulate study will be performed by using the randomly generating data to simulate the two-way matching degree of each pair of participants. We analyze the different matching results obtained by the different models. We also present the difficulty of different models and the solution times.

Efficient Updating Shortest Path Calculations for Traffic Assignment

Holmgren, Johan January 2004 (has links)
Traffic planning in a modern congested society is an important and time consuming procedure. Finding fast algorithms for solving traffic problems is therefore of great interest for traffic planners allover the world. This thesis concerns solving the fixed demand traffic assignment problem (TAP) on a number of different transportation test networks. TAP is solved using the Frank-Wolfe algorithm and the shortest path problems that arise as subproblems to the Frank-Wolfe algorithm are solved using the network simplex algorithm. We evaluate how a number of existing pricing strategies to the network simplex algorithm performs with TAP. We also construct a new efficient pricing strategy, the Bucket Pricing Strategy, inspired by the heap implementation of Dijkstra's method for shortest path problems. This pricing strategy is, together with the actual use of the network simplex algorithm, the main result of the thesis and the pricing strategy is designed to take advantage of the special structure of TAP. In addition to performing tests on the conventional Frank-Wolfe algorithm, we also test how the different pricing strategies perform on Frank-Wolfe algorithms using conjugate and bi-conjugate search directions. These test results show that the updating shortest path calculations obtained by using the network simplex outperforms the non-updating Frank-Wolfe algorithms. Comparisons with Bar-Gera's OBA show that our implementation, especially together with the bucket pricing strategy, also outperforms this algorithm for relative gaps down to 10E-6.

A Sleep-Scheduling-Based Cross-Layer Design Approach for Application-Specific Wireless Sensor Networks

Ha, Rick Wan Kei January 2006 (has links)
The pervasiveness and operational autonomy of mesh-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) make them an ideal candidate in offering sustained monitoring functions at reasonable cost over a wide area. To extend the functional lifetime of battery-operated sensor nodes, stringent sleep scheduling strategies with communication duty cycles running at sub-1% range are expected to be adopted. Although ultra-low communication duty cycles can cast a detrimental impact on sensing coverage and network connectivity, its effects can be mitigated with adaptive sleep scheduling, node deployment redundancy and multipath routing within the mesh WSN topology. This work proposes a cross-layer organizational approach based on sleep scheduling, called Sense-Sleep Trees (SS-Trees), that aims to harmonize the various engineering issues and provides a method to extend monitoring capabilities and operational lifetime of mesh-based WSNs engaged in wide-area surveillance applications. Various practical considerations such as sensing coverage requirements, duty cycling, transmission range assignment, data messaging, and protocol signalling are incorporated to demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of the proposed design approach.

Didaktiska implikationer i lärares samhällsuppdrag : Uppfattningar om demokrati och biologiskt ämnesstoff hos blivande lärare

Nilsson, Jan January 2007 (has links)
In today’s school in Sweden the assignment of community encompasses mediated values and education of democracy as well of single subject matters. What does it mean then, that teachers have a certain kind of idea of democracy, and what implications may biology have for the assignment of community? In upper secondary school there are quite many courses in biology with a national curriculum, and findings show that students of teaching perceive or think of biology as helping to promote the dual-purpose of teaching. In this study, the author of the paper has interviewed four future teachers of upper secondary school with biology as one of their main subjects. The purpose has been to identify their perceptions of democracy as well as their conceptions of the relationship between biology and democracy in education. The result is that the interviewees perceive of democracy as consistent with representative, participative and deliberative concepts of democracy. They conceive of the relationship between biology and democracy in education as to a great extent consistent with the deliberative concept of democracy. The implications are that the idea of democracy becomes more radical and consistent with the deliberative concept of democracy when subject matters of biology are part of the education. In this manner, subject matters of biology are of educational importance for the teachers´ conceptions of democracy as well for the assignment of community.

Route Assignment for Distributed Leased Lines in Mobile Cellular Network

Huang, Yung-chia 09 July 2007 (has links)
When a large number of base stations fail due to the breakdown of some transmission circuit in a mobile cellular network, base stations located in neighboring areas may take over those malfunctioned base stations and continue to provide the access service of mobile communications for users in surrounding areas, thereby reducing the area in which mobile communications are out of service. Therefore, if leased circuits in base stations could complete the route distribution configuration prior to the onset of malfunction, it could decrease the impact of circuit breakdown and traffic loss. Also, the efficiency would be improved if the circuit assignment personnel could complete the job when the leased lines are less, while avoiding reassignment in the future and enhancing the mobile communications operations. In this study, we use a graph structure to represent the present mobile cellular network and establish the route-selection strategies. We define the "Optimal Route Assignment" for a newly constructed base station, which refers to the route assignment that causes least impact on disconnection area when any circuit in the network is broken. We also propose to use A* algorithm for optimal route assignment. However, the computation for the optimal route is time consuming. Measures such as computation time and least hops are considered in designing other strategies for route assignment. These strategies are parametric and we carried out experiments by adjusting and controlling parameters using real routing data. The experimental results demonstrate that there is no single winner among the proposed strategies. We identify a number of best strategies for different operating regions.

Simultanes Routen- und Verkehrsmittelwahlmodell

Vrtic, Milenko 18 April 2004 (has links) (PDF)

WCDMA系統中配置OVSF碼滿足服務品質之研究 / OVSF Code Assignment Based QoS in WCDMA

Unknown Date (has links)
WCDMA is a wideband Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) system, it uses Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor (OVSF) codes to support diverse data transmission rates. Orthogonal variable spreading factor codes have the ability to provide variable bit rates and QoS to meet different multimedia application requirements. In this research, we group the traffic and use Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor (OVSF) technique to deal with resource allocation problem in order to offer satisfactory quality of service to the users. We propose dynamic group allocation method to provide differentiated services in order to meet the QoS requirement and avoid bandwidth wasting. From all those requested services, we move all those services of the same service priority to the same group. The system will subsequently assign OVSF code to each group. Data transmission of each group is based on time-sharing mechanism. Simulations show that the proposed method can provide diverse data transmission rates, and is able to reduce code blocking rate, increase bandwidth and system utilization, and meet the QoS requirement.

Church tax, church disaffiliation, and voluntary giving

Kühn, Susann 28 September 2015 (has links) (PDF)
A large body of research has investigated the effects of religion on individual behavior and, more recently, the collective performance of societies. Religion is predominantly credited with favorable outcomes, such as pro-social behavior, better health and higher life satisfaction. Religious and non-religious individuals also differ in their values and preferences. Moreover, religious institutions such as churches also have a large direct effect on society by being an employer or a social welfare provider. Against this background, the constant decline in church membership rates in Germany since the late 1960s is an economically relevant phenomenon. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the economic causes and consequences of church disaffiliation, from both a theoretical and an empirical point of view. Based on an extensive literature review of models of religious consumption choices I conclude that most of the previous work does not pay sufficient attention to the institutional framework of church membership and church financing in Europe. I develop a theoretical model in which I analyze an individual’s decisions on church membership and on voluntary giving to religious and secular organizations against the institutional backgrounds of the German church tax system and the Italian tax assignment system. The model predicts that in a church tax system individuals with a higher income and those who have to pay a higher church tax rate are more likely to disaffiliate from the church. In contrast, in a tax assignment system cost-benefit considerations of church membership should not take place. Furthermore, the model shows that church and assignment taxes can crowd out voluntary giving to religious and non-religious purposes. In the empirical part of the dissertation I focus on the case of Germany, testing the hypotheses derived from the theoretical discussion with the help of the German Taxpayer Panel for the years 2001 to 2006. The main research question in the first empirical chapter is whether the institutional framework in the form of the existing church tax regulations has a statistically significant effect on the decision to leave the church. The hypothesis is that ceteris paribus an increase in the price of church membership increases the probability that an individual disaffiliates from the church. The estimation results show that both the price of church membership in the first year of the observation period and the change in price experienced by the individual have a significant positive, but moderate effect on the probability of church disaffiliation. In the second empirical part of the dissertation I ask if church members and non-members differ in their voluntary giving and if the giving behavior changes from before to after disaffiliation. I distinguish between the decision whether to make a contribution at all and the decision how much to give. The results imply that church members are not less, but rather more likely to make a charitable contribution than non-members. However, I do find that the average amount given by church members is below the amount given by non-members. This finding suggests that church taxes and additional voluntary donations might be substitutes at the intensive margin. With respect to church disaffiliation, I find evidence that giving is moderately higher after individuals have left the church than before. However, results are inconsistent in whether the increase is due to a higher inclination to give, a higher amount given by those who make a contribution, or both.
