Achieving equivalence in literary translation from Afrikaans to English : Kaburu by Deon Opperman / Susan Elizabeth NelNel, Susan Elizabeth January 2014 (has links)
Drama translation is an area in the discipline of Translation Studies that has been neglected
compared with the translation of other literary texts, especially in the South African context.
This dissertation contributes to this neglected area by exploring to what extent and how the
principles associated with foreignisation, dynamic equivalence and shift theory can aid in the
process of translating a literary text, specifically a dramatic text, from Afrikaans into English.
This dissertation also discusses translation challenges specific to the translation of the
source text, Deon Opperman’s Kaburu, from Afrikaans into English.
The source text, Kaburu, was selected because of the playwright’s interesting use of the
Afrikaans language and the numerous culture-specific references in the text. In addition, it
was theorised that a larger global audience would be able to relate to the international
themes of identity and migration while being exposed to themes pertaining to socio-political
issues that are prevalent in contemporary South Africa, such as crime, land disownment,
name changes and political programs to redress the injustices of the past.
In order to retain the culture-specific nature of the text, the decision was made to produce a
foreignised translation of the source text. Numerous examples of challenges encountered
during the production of the target text are provided and discussed. The examples and
discussions provided demonstrates that the theoretical concepts of equivalence,
domestication and foreignisation and shift theory can be useful tools in analysing and
producing solutions for dealing with challenging translation in a literary translation between

Weak-Equivalence Principle Violation and Mass Change of Charged Matter Due to Vacuum PolarizationTajmar, Martin 08 March 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Vacuum polarization by electric fields is a well established fact. Assuming that anti-matter has negative gravitational properties, the fluctating electric dipoles from the quantum vacuum may also have gravitational dipolar properties. A model is developed that describes how electric fields could gravitationally polarize the vacuum causing gravitational screening or anti-screening effects. This leads to a violation of the Weak Equivalence Principle or a general mass change most notabily for elementary particles, such as the electron or positron, below but close to measured boundaries. Also a gravitational vacuum torque is predicted to act on a charged capacitor perpendicular to a gravitational field. The predictions could be verified by future laboratory experiments that could contribute on our understanding of the gravitational properties of anti-matter.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:In this thesis we discuss some of the anomalies present in systems with long-range interactions,
for instance negative speci c heat and negative magnetic susceptibility, and show how
they can be related to the convexity properties of the thermodynamic potentials and nonequivalence
of ensembles. We also discuss the possibility of engineering long-range quantum
spin systems with cold atoms in optical lattices to experimentally verify the existence of nonequivalence
of ensembles. We then formulate an expression for the density of states when
the energy and magnetisation correspond to a pair of non-commuting operators. Finally we
analytically compute the entropy s( ;m) as a function of energy, , and magnetisation, m, for
the anisotropic Heisenberg model with Curie-Weiss type interactions. The results show that
the entropy is non-concave in terms of magnetisation under certain circumstances which in
turn indicates that the microcanonical and canonical ensembles are not equivalent and that
the magnetic susceptibility is negative. After making an appropriate change of variables we
show that a second-order phase transition can be present at negative temperatures in the
microcanonical ensemble which cannot be represented in the canonical ensemble. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie tesis bespreek ons van die onverwagte eienskappe wat sisteme met lang afstand wisselwerkings
kan openbaar, byvoorbeeld negatiewe spesi eke warmte en negatiewe magnetiese
suseptibiliteit. Ons dui ook die ooreenkoms tussen hierdie gedrag en die konveksiteit van
die termodinamiese potensiale en nie-ekwivalente ensembles aan. Hierna bespreek ons die
moontlikheid om lang afstand kwantum spin sisteme te realiseer met koue atome in 'n optiese
rooster. Daarna wys ons hoe dit moontlik is om 'n uitdrukking vir die digtheid van toestande
te formuleer vir sisteme waar die energie en magnetisasie ooreenstem met operatore wat nie
met mekaar kommuteer nie. Uiteindelik bepaal ons die entropie, s( ;m), in terme van die
energie, , en magnetisasie, m, vir die anisotropiese Heisenberg model met Curie-Weiss tipe
interaksies. Die resultate wys dat die entropie onder sekere omstandighede nie konkaaf in
terme van magnetisasie is nie. Dit, op sy beurt, dui aan dat die mikrokanoniese en kanoniese

Equivalence Theorems and the Local-Global PropertyBarra, Aleams 01 January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis we revisit some classical results about the MacWilliams equivalence theorems for codes over fields and rings. These theorems deal with the question whether, for a given weight function, weight-preserving isomorphisms between codes can be described explicitly. We will show that a condition, which was already known to be sufficient for the MacWilliams equivalence theorem, is also necessary. Furthermore we will study a local-global property that naturally generalizes the MacWilliams equivalence theorems. Making use of F-partitions, we will prove that for various subgroups of the group of invertible matrices the local-global extension principle is valid.

In this thesis, we study Br*(E,c) and in particular prove that: i) If E is smooth, then Br*(E,c) is a type I Borel *-algebra (Definition 6.3.10). ii) If E is a hyperfinite, then Br*(E,c) is a Borel AF-algebra (Definition 7.5.1). iii) Generalizing Kumjian's definition, we define a Borel twist G over E and its associated sequentially closed Borel *-algebra Br*(G). iv) Let a Borel Cartan pair (B, Bo) denote a sequentially closed Borel *-algebra B with a Borel Cartan subalgebra Bo, where B is countably Bo-generated. Generalizing Feldman-Moore's result, we prove that any pair (B, Bo) can be realized uniquely as a pair (Br*(E,c), L(Bo(X))). Moreover, we show that the pair (Br*(E,c), L(Bo(X))) is a complete invariant of the countable Borel equivalence relation E. v) We prove a Krieger type theorem, by showing that two aperiodic hyperfinite countable equivalence relations are isomorphic if and only if their associated Borel *-algebras Br*(E1) and Br*(E2) are isomorphic.

Business leaders are increasingly coming to recognise that there is more to business success
than technical and cognitive competence. Personnel leadership is proving to be critical for
business bottom-line achievements considering that most business outcomes are achieved
through human capital. Emotional intelligence can be used to the advantage of organisations
by developing an emotional intelligence audit. The objective of this study was to investigate
the psychometric properties of the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) developed by Schutte,
Malouff, Hall, Haggerty, Cooper, and Golden (1998) for employees in the mining industry in
South Africa. The psychometric soundness of the EIS was tested.
The general objective of the research was to standardise a psychometric instrument of
emotional intelligence and determine the validity of the Schutte Emotional Intelligence
Questionnaire (EIS) (Schutte, et al., 1998). A valid and reliable measure of emotional
intelligence could be valuable in the organisation to identify specific EI needs that could be
developed through the implementation of EI development programmes. In this context a
standardised psychometric instrument of EI could be of use in organisations during the
training and development of employees.
A cross-sectional survey research method with an availability sample (N = 324) from
employees in the mining industry was used. Exploratory factor analysis was used to confirm
the construct equivalence of the EIS in different racial pups. The results supported a one-factor
model of emotional intelligence. ANOVA analysis was conducted to determine the
levels of emotional intelligence in terms of various demographic aspects such as gender,
racial groups, language groups, and age groups. The results indicated that there are no
significant differences between different demographics aspects and the level of emotional

Assessing Measurement Equivalence of the English and Spanish Versions on an Employee Attitude Survey Using Multigroup Analysis in Structural Equation Modeling.Koulikov, Mikhail 08 1900 (has links)
The study utilized the covariance structure comparison methodology - Multigroup Analysis in Structural Equation Modeling - evaluating measurement equivalence of English and Spanish versions of an employee opinion survey. The concept of measurement equivalence was defined as consisting of four components: sample equivalence, semantic equivalence, conceptual equivalence and scalar equivalence. The results revealed that the two language versions of the survey exhibited acceptable measurement equivalence across five survey dimensions Communications, Supervision, Leadership, Job Content & Satisfaction and Company Image & Commitment. Contrary to the study second hypothesis, there was no meaningful difference in opinion scores between English-speaking and Spanish-speaking respondents on the latent construct of Job Content & Satisfaction.

Interactions of equivalence and other behavioral relations: Simple successive discrimination training.Brackney, Ryan 12 1900 (has links)
The experimenter asked if documented equivalence class membership would influence the development of shared discriminative stimulus function established through simple successive discrimination training. In Experiment 1, equivalence classes were established with two sets of 9 stimuli. Common stimulus functions were then trained within or across the equivalence classes. Greater acquisition rates of the simple discriminations with stimuli drawn from within the equivalence classes were observed. In Experiment 2, a third stimulus set was added with which no equivalence relations were explicitly trained. The findings of Experiment 1 were replicated, but the Set 3 results were inconsistent across subjects. The outcomes of the two experiments demonstrate that equivalence classes have an effect on other behavioral relations which requires further investigation.

2014 plockas riktmärket på 15 barn/barngrupp i förskolan bort. Det främsta argumentet till detta beslut var att istället för att fokusera på en siffra skulle ”barnets bästa” styra barngruppens storlek. 2016 återinförs riktlinjer om en maxgräns för antal barn i barngruppen. Denna studies syfte är att synliggöra de argument Skolverkets allmänna råd i frågan, kom att grundas i. Vad är skillnaden mellan de gamla och de nya riktlinjerna? Hur ringades ”problemet” med barngruppens storlek in? Vad framfördes som de bakomliggande orsakerna till förändringarna för riktmärket för antalet barn per grupp? För att ta reda på svaren har jag använt mig av en kvalitativ innehållsanalys där jag granskat och tolkat Skolverkets Allmänna råd Förskolan (2016). De allmänna råden hänvisar till Skolverkets kartläggningar av aktuell pedagogisk, utvecklingspsykologisk och socialpedagogisk forskning samt Skolinspektionens kvalitetsgranskningar, vilka jag använt mig av för att få reda på svaren. Analysen visar att Skolverket riktar kritik mot kommunernas bristande sätt att anpassa verksamheterna till barns skilda uppväxtvillkor. Kommunerna anses inte kunna rekrytera högskoleutbildad personal, inte heller kunna fördela resurserna rätt i förhållande till lämplig personaltäthet, storlek och sammansättning av barngrupperna, barns trygghet samt förskolans miljö. Frågan om små och stora barngrupper är komplex och handlar inte enbart om en siffra.
