Participatory research with hospital social workers in a primary health care context

We conducted the study to explore and define the role of the social worker in Primary Health Care. The medical care model on its own is viewed as inappropriate for developing countries. We see Primary Health Care as holding the key to improving the health status of the many disadvantaged communities in South Africa. The Primary Health Care approach demands those health care providers, including social workers work collaboratively to provide the best possible services to the communities. Social Work is a profession concerned with the disadvantaged. However, social workers are assigned a very limited role in Primary Health Care. Since participants are concerned about subjective and experiential realities, participatory research was the appropriate research method. The major findings and conclusions were that, social workers have a role in Primary Health Care. They have to be assertive and tell others what is it that they do to find a place in Primary Health Care / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science (Mental Health))

Networked cultural production : filmmaking in the Wreckamovie community

This thesis challenges core assumptions associated with the peer production of culture using the web-based collaborative film production platform Wreckamovie to understand how peer production works in practice. Active cultural participation is a growing political priority for many governments and cultural bodies, but these priorities are often implemented without a basis in empirical evidence, making it necessary for rigorous scholarship to tackle emerging networked cultural production. Existing work portrays peer production efforts as unrealistically distinct from proprietary, market-based production, incorrectly suggesting that peer production allows distributed, non-monetarily motivated, collaboration between self-selected individuals in hierarchy-free communities. In overcoming these assumptions, this thesis contributes to the development of a consolidated theoretical framework encompassing the complicated and multifaceted nature of networked cultural production. This theoretical framing extends Bourdieu’s theory of cultural production and reconciles it with Becker’s Art Worlds framework, and further embeds and draws on Benkler’s notion of commons-based peer production. Concretely, this research tackles the emergence of new collaborative production models enabled by networked technologies, and theorizes the tensions and challenges characterizing such production forms. Secondly, this thesis redefines cultural participation and considers the divisions of labour in online filmmaking materializing from the interactions between professional and non-professional filmmakers. Finally, this study considers the social economies surrounding networked cultural production, including crowdfunding, and characterizes associated conversions of capital, such as the conversion of symbolic capital into financial capital. Methodologically, this thesis employs an embedded case study strategy. It examines four feature film productions facilitated by the online platform Wreckamovie, as well as the online community within which these productions are embedded. The four production cases have completed all production stages, and have resulted in completed cultural goods during the course of data collection. This study’s findings were derived from two and half years of participant observations, interviews with 29 Wreckamovie community and production members, and the examination of archived production-related discourses (2006-2013). Ultimately, this study makes concrete proposals towards a theory of networked cultural production with clear policy implications.

Ces dix dernières années, plusieurs centaines de web-documentaires ont été publiés sur Internet. Si ce format émergent connaît un succès d’estime important auprès des professionnels des médias, son design ne va pas de soi. Dès lors, comment les théories du cinéma documentaire et des médias informatisés éclairent-elles les métamorphoses médiatiques caractéristiques de ces « nouvelles écritures » ? Quels sont les enjeux ontologico-esthétiques et communicationnels d’un documentaire interactif ? Quel rôle et quel pouvoir l’instance d’énonciation doit-elle octroyer à un « spectateur-actant » ? Afin de répondre à ces questions, un état des lieux de la production francophone permet tout d’abord d’établir une typologie des différents modes d’interaction. Ensuite, une approche ethnographique, fondée sur une observation participante du design de B4, fenêtres sur tour, au sein de France Télévisions, interroge l’ensemble des controverses socio-techniques et sémio-pragmatiques qui jalonnent les six mois de conception. Une analyse par théorisation ancrée met en exergue les différentes dimensions d’un Utilisateur Modèle négociées, de manière plus ou moins implicite, par l’ensemble des acteurs. Enfin, les usages supposés du web-documentaire sont confrontés à une évaluation de l’expérience utilisateur. Les jonctions et disjonctions entre les figures d’un Utilisateur Modèle, Statistique et Empirique contribuent in fine à mieux appréhender le design de ce format hybride et non stabilisé. / In the last few years, several hundred interactive documentaries (i-docs) have been published on the Internet. If many media professionals prize the i-doc format, its design remains a challenging feat. Given this, what light do film documentary theories and digital media shed on the mediated metamorphoses that typify the “New Writings” movement? What are the communicational and ontologico-aesthetic issues of i-docs? What role and what power should an instance of enunciation accord to the “actant-spectator”?In response to these questions, our study of the current state of the French-speaking production scene brought to the fore a typology of interaction modes. Following this observation, an ethnographic approach, based on a participant observation method, questioned the overall sociotechnical and semio-graphic issues that marked the six-month design process of an i-doc called B4, fenêtres sur tour for the State-run France Télévisions. A Grounded Theory analysis of the data highlighted the different dimensions of a more or less implicit negotiated Model User used by the actors. Finally, the purported uses of i-docs were questioned in evaluating users’ experience. The junctions and disjunctions involving the interaction of the User, Statistical and Empirical Models contributed to a better grasp of the designing of the hybrid and non-stabilised i-doc format.

The study case of Residencial Sirius was found at the intersection between Minha Casa Minha Vida Program and the Estrat?gia para Desenvolvimento Integrado e Sustent?vel de Territ?rios (Integrated and Sustainable Territorial Development Strategy), inaugurated in 2014 for promoting socioterritorial development at preselected residential neighborhoods. Working from a dual role perspective as a technical agent and a researcher, it was possible to practice participant observation at the territory and with local dwellers, approaching Sirius through what it was referred to as dialogical lenses ? based on theories of complex thinking, where subject and object are interdependent and relate in a reciprocal manner. This dialogical approach was characterized by articulating technical knowledge with territorial experiencing, anchored to integrated urban analysis and participant observation. The research expected to stimulate reflections on the role of architects and urbanists in processes for the construction of communities, as well as on the importance of territorial experiencing for architecture and urbanism training programs. Results indicated practical limitations of the Estrat?gia para Desenvolvimento Integrado e Sustent?vel de Territ?rios considering contradictory impacts of Minha Casa Minha Vida Program on priority housing development for low income families. / Estrat?gias da pol?tica p?blica de habita??o foram, do Banco Nacional da Habita??o na d?cada de 1960 ao Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida nos anos 2000, desenhadas predominantemente pelo que se referiu aqui como mirada tradicional ? alinhadas ao paradigma epistemol?gico dominante e orientadas efetivamente para produ??o de unidades habitacionais, mas n?o para forma??o de comunidades. <p>This study aims to compare two ethnographies of organizational culture – one from the discipline of Social Anthropology and one from the discipline of Organizational Studies – considering their purpose, their method, and their concept of culture. Despite big similarities, or perhaps thanks to the similarities, some fundamental differences are made visible. The discipline of Organizational Studies has, compared to that of Social Anthropology, regarding the research method being used, less focus on, and less participation in, the informal social life of the organizational culture of the study. Regarding the concept of culture the Organizational Studies consider culture containing more of unity, stability and clear boundaries, compared to Social Anthropology. Further – the Organizational Studies has more focus on power and structure, while Social Anthropology has more focus on meaning and interpretation. Finally – the research purpose of studies in Organizational Studies is a bit more normative in its characteristic, than that of Social Anthropology. The study is concluded with a discussion of the future of Social Anthropology and its studies of organizational culture. Após anos de um regime autoritário, diversas manifestações da sociedade civil organizada levaram à criação de espaços de debate integrado, onde Estado e sociedade pudessem discutir, conjuntamente, estratégias de desenvolvimento em busca do melhoramento da qualidade de vida da população. Após a Constituição de 1988, estes espaços, chamados de Conselhos, foram criados e difundidos nas mais diversas áreas, tais como saúde, assistência social, educação etc. Para o debate integrado relacionado às condições de vida e produção da população rural do país, foram criados os Conselhos Federal, Estaduais e Municipais de Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável, os quais foram amplamente difundidos após o Programa Nacional de Fortalecimento da Agricultura Familiar - PRONAF. Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o Conselho Municipal de Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável de Petrolina, Pernambuco, a partir de suas ações para o desenvolvimento local e integrado da população rural do município. Para tanto, nos utilizamos dos debates de Sen, Putnam, Abramovay, Franco e Beduschi Filho sobre desenvolvimento como liberdade, capital social, desenvolvimento local integrado e aprendizagem social, respectivamente, para fundamentar a visão de desenvolvimento aqui assumida. A partir, então, da inversão da lógica capital-economicista atualmente vigente, a qual coloca em foco o desenvolvimento econômico em detrimento do desenvolvimento social, cultural e político, consideramos, a partir dos dados obtidos e observações realizadas, que o CMDRS de Petrolina tem sido uma importante ferramenta para o desenvolvimento da área rural do município, promovendo a participação, o controle e a aprendizagem social e a melhoria da qualidade de vida da população desta área / For decades, strategies to promote social participation in social, economic and policy decisions were pursued in Brazil. After years of an authoritarian regime, various manifestations of civil society led to the creation of spaces for integrated debate, where state and society could discuss, jointly, developing strategies in pursuit of improving the population's quality of life. After the 1988 Constitution, these spaces, called Councils, were created and disseminated in several áreas, such as health, social care, education etc. For the integrated discussion related to the living conditions and production of the rural population in the country, Federal, State and Municipal Councils of Sustainable Rural Development were created and widely disseminated after the National Program for Strengthening Family Agriculture - PRONAF. From this perspective, the objective of this study was to analyze the City Council for Sustainable Rural Development in Petrolina, Pernambuco, through their actions for local and integrated development of rural population of the city. To do so, we used the debates of Sen, Putnam, Abramovay, Franco and Beduschi Filho on development as freedom, social capital, integrated local development and social learning, respectively, to support the development view assumed here. From the inversion of the capital-economicist logic currently in effect, which shifts the focus to economic development at the expense of social, cultural and politicai developments, consider, from the data obtained and observations conducted, the CMDRS Petrolina has been an important tool for the development of the city's rural area, promoting participation, control and social learning and improving the population's quality of life of this area.

Mezilidské vztahy ve školních kolektivech / Interpersonal relationships in school communities

The aim of this work is to gather relevant information about interpersonal relationships in the teaching staff of selected secondary schools and to show how they are perceived, understood, experienced and reflected by their participants. The result of this work is to propose principles and recommendations leading to the optimization of relationships between teachers. This work, in the terms of qualitative research, used the design of case study. Research techniques are semistructured interview and participant observation. Through them, information was gathered on relationships between teachers, teachers and school management and teachers and other people, with whom they come into contact within the scope of their profession. These relationships were then qualitatively analyzed based on open coding, categorization, typology, contrasting, generalization and validation of communication. The result of the investigation was that six schools out of four have the interpersonal relationships on a good level, educators are happy at work and their good mood and feelings are transmitted to the whole school climate. Transformation of a service organisation through participatory action research

The research aimed to pro-activeiy embark in an internal transformation process, in order to improve efficiency of the Social Work Department of Gauteng Medical Command of the South African Military Health Service. Participatory action research as a qualitative research design was- used. The intervention identification process was implemented as a problem-solving technique to direct the process of transformation-change. The research was conducted by a research group often social workers from the South African National Defence Force. The results of the research were the implementation of interventions on identified systems, namely the service delivery system and the performance management system of the Social Work Department of Gauteng Medical Command. The use of particpatorv action research as a process to address problems in an organisation was confirmed. The contribution of the participatory action process to process outcomes, such as empowerment and learning, was also indicated in the findings. / Social Work / MA(SS) (Mental Health)
