Form and sense of Stoic paradoxes in Latin poetry, by Lucilius, Horace, Lucan and Persius

Demanche, Diane 01 July 2011 (has links)
The presence of Stoic paradoxes in the works of poets whose links with the Stoa are complex reveals the particular status of these incongruous formulas in Roman thought. After studying the origins of paradox and its transformations during the development of the Greek philosophical schools, the thesis considers the particularity of Stoic paradox and its adaptation to the Roman world. Unexpectedly, the Stoics do not sign away these disconcerting assertions. By their rhetorical effectiveness, and despite the hostility they also arouse, paradoxes appear in texts which do not belong to the Stoa. Their adaptation in poetic works – satires of Lucilius, Horace and Persius, epodes, odes and epistles of Horace, and Lucanian epic - could make us consider that they are perverted and diverted from their first aim. Indeed, the purpose of these poets is not at all to have the reader adhere to the uncompromising perfection outlined by the Stoic paradoxes. But the link between the paradoxes we find in this poetic corpus and their Stoic origin is actually much more intimate. By different ways, each poet takes up the main of the Stoic paradoxical approach : it consists in waking up the minds, and showing the radical novelty of the truth which one wants to reveal, making sure, at the same time, that the reader can join it. Lucilius’ virulence, Horace’s intimacy, Lucan’s daze and Persius’ abstruse language constitute the different but converging ways by which one subtly undertakes to shock in order to convert.

Orchestrierung von Geo Web Services

Kallbach, Maria 31 August 2009 (has links)

Croissance et coalescence de bulles dans les magmas : analyse mathématique et simulation numérique / Bubbles growth and coalescence in magmas : mathematical analysis and numerical simulation

Forestier-Coste, Louis 22 June 2012 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to mathematical and numerical study of a physical problem coming from volcanology. We look at the polydisperse modeling of bubbles growth by exsolution, decompression and coalescence. A polydisperse growth model has been proposed in literature, but it takes into accountonly the volume of bubbles, which restrict the application field, because growth by exsolution also depends on the water mass in the bubbles. In order to upgrade this model, we start with a non-dimensional monodisperse description of the bubble growth by decompression and exsolution, given by a coupled ODE system and a PDE. A numerical code is proposed to solve the monodisperse problem and is currently used. After validating this code numerically and considering several limit cases, we studied the solutions of the system and defined a flux approximation to decouple the equations system. Next, we extend the polydispers model from one to two dimensions, the volume and the water mass of bubbles. A resolution of coalescence is proposed and coupled with the polydisperse growth model. The resolution of coalescence is confronted with others numericals schemes in one and two dimensions in order to validate the proposed numerical scheme. The first numerical tests applied to a physical problem give good results.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diet with selenium on the physico-chemical composition and somatic cell count of buffalo milk, and check the selenium waste in milk and minas kind fresh cheese. For the analysis of physical-chemical composition and SCC were used 2264 buffalo milk data from the Murrah, belonging to Tapuio Ltda, located in the agreste region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the period 2010 to 2014. To check the amount of selenium residue in buffalo milk and fresh cheese mines were used 100 Murrah buffaloes divided into 5 lots. The batches were formed according to the production levels of animals, wherein the amount of concentrate fed varied within each lot, which received 0.08 ppm / Se / kg of concentrate. Was collected from 300 ml of tank milk from and each lot, as well as 300 gr minas cheese, from August to November 2014, with the collection of lots held only in the month of November. The samples were sent to the Pernambuco Tecnology Institute for selenium residue analysis. The effect of the seasons was contrasted in two ways, namely: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter season or drought and rainy season. The analyzes statistics were performed using the procedures available in the software SAS? (SAS, 2002). Selenium level provided to the animals in this study was not significant to the point of detection of their residue in milk and the cheeses. However, it influences the reduction of the CCS. The milk characteristics were not affected by selenium use only the seasons.

The musical ode in Britain, c.1670-1800

Trowles, Tony Albert January 1992 (has links)
The musical ode, which developed during the 1660s and 1670s as a means of celebrating occasions of particular significance (often by setting a specially written text), remained popular throughout the eighteenth century, and can be regarded as the earliest form of large-scale secular choral music to have developed in England. This dissertation discusses the nature of the genre (including its relationship with the poetical ode), and surveys the contexts in which odes were composed and performed. It is supplemented by a catalogue which lists some 270 examples of the genre. Among the earliest odes were those written for performance at the court in London. These have already been the subject of musicological study, but although they were the biggest stylistic influence on the other odes written during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, they were not quite the earliest examples of the species. At the University of Oxford, the practice of performing specially composed odes to enhance academic ceremonial dates from at least 1669, and the custom continued throughout the following century. The odes on St Cecilia's Day also originate in the late seventeenth century, but although the works performed in London between 1683 and 1701 have received some scholarly attention, odes on the same theme written later in the century, along with works performed at a number of provincial centres, have not hitherto been discussed in the context of the wider ode genre. Also neglected have been the birthday odes performed at the Vice-regal court in Dublin during the eighteenth century. These complement the London court odes, but have not previously been listed or discussed in detail. Other odes were written for charitable causes, and to commemorate a miscellaneous array of occasions, including military victories and the inauguration of new buildings. In addition, in the latter half of the eighteenth century, some composers responded to developments in the poetical ode by setting libretti which had no 'occasional' inspiration, but which were notable literary achievements in their own right.

Contractivity-Preserving Explicit 2-Step, 6-Stage, 6-Derivative Hermite-Birkhoff–Obrechkoff Ode Solver of Order 13

Alzahrani, Abdulrahman January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, we construct a new optimal contractivity-preserving (CP) explicit, 2-step, 6-stage, 6-derivative, Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff method of order 13, denoted by HBO(13) with nonnegative coefficients, for solving nonstiff first-order initial value problems y'=f(t,y), y(t_0)=y_0. This new method is the combination of a CP 2-step, 6-derivative, Hermite--Obrechkoff of order 9, denoted by HO(9), and a 6-stage Runge-Kutta method of order 5, denoted by RK(6,5). The new HBO(13) method has order 13. We compare this new method, programmed in Matlab, to Adams-Bashforth-Moulton method of order 13 in PECE mode, denoted by ABM(13), by testing them on several frequently used test problems, and show that HBO(13) is more efficient with respect to the CPU time, the global error at the endpoint of integration and the relative energy error. We show that the new HBO(13) method has a larger scaled interval of absolute stability than ABM(13) in PECE mode.

De l'ode à la pastorale : formes de la célébration politique en France (1549-1572) / From the ode to the pastoral : forms of political celebration in France (1549-1572)

Carrols, Anne 16 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis studies The Pleiade's poetry of political celebration in relation to the epic, with the examples of Deffense as a statement of this project (1549) and Franciade as an incomplete realization of it (1572). The celebration poems are part of this project of a new Aeneid, which removes them from the ephemeral splendour of the celebration which created them in the first place ; these poems fall both within the moment of the festive event and the virtuality of the great work in which they must come to fruition. This great work, seen as a tale of foundation legitimating the hope of an immortal Empire, wants to shape History as well as depict an ideal image of the sovereign and present a poetic construction inserting the culture of Antiquity to the French genius. During Henri II's reign, the poets celebrate the princes as the heroes of the developing epic and explore the forms that this celebration of the Valois monarchy could take. The prophetic furor becomes the privileged statement of political lyricism. Yet, at the end of the 1550s, the formula only creates its own disenchanted repetition, or poets abandon it by ironically pointing out its vacuity. During the decade that follows, while the armed conflict creates historical uncertainty, the celebration poems disguise the princes as shepherds. At the beginning, the pastoral was a variation that could rejuvenate the initial project. It transforms into an alternative to an obsolete heroic model, related with political and poetic values of seduction, appeased gentleness, mannerist refinement in harmony with nature.

A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF EBOLA VIRUS VLP ASSEMBLY: AN ODE-BASED MODELING APPROACH

Xiao Liu (15999749) 09 June 2023 (has links)
<p>  </p> <p>Ebola virus (EBOV) infection remains to be a challenge to human health by its high mortality rate. Though it has been discovered for almost 50 years, there are only two antibody-based therapies approved today, and the mortality rate is still greater than 30% with the treatment. Authentic EBOV studies are strictly limited to biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs, which slows the development of treatment. While more simple and safer systems have been developed to understand different stages of EBOV infection, such as the matrix protein (VP40) virus-like particle (VLP) and minigenome systems, we still lack a systematical view of EBOV infection. On the other hand, mathematical modeling has been used to assist biological and medical studies for many years, as it has the advantage of integrating data and providing quantitative insight to a biosystem. In our study, we took advantage of mathematical modeling and build the primary ordinary differential equation-based (ODE-based) model of EBOV at subcellular level step by step. We built the budding pathway of EBOV VP40 first, calibrated and validated our model with experimental data. We proposed that phosphatidylserine (PS) can directly influence the stability of VP40 filaments and the budding process of VLPs. Also, the oligomerization of VP40 filaments may follow the nucleation-elongation process. Next, we conducted in-silico simulation to evaluate the treatment efficiency of fendiline, a drug lowering cell membrane PS level, in treating EBOV. We found that while in general, fendiline can decrease VLP production, there can be fendiline-induced VLP production increases at certain time points due to slow filament growth or fast VLP budding rates. Also, we concluded that fendiline is relatively more effective when applied in the budding stage of EBOV life cycle. Moreover, fendiline efficacy may increase when applied with a VLP budding step targeted treatment. Finally, we integrated nucleoprotein (NP) into our model. We reproduced the two-stage interaction between NP and VP40 and predict that NP increases VLP production through influencing filament oligomerization and VLP budding steps. Also, the dual-effect of NP on VLP production may exist, as a too high NP/VP40 production ratio can decrease VLP production. From the aspect of protein expression time, we found that a bit earlier NP production than VP40 production is beneficial for both inclusion body-containing (IB-containing) VLP production and prevention in energy waste on production of VLPs without IBs. Overall, we have built a solid foundation towards a mathematical EBOV model and demonstrated the value of models in assisting experimental EBOV studies.</p>
