`The love that dare not speak its name' in the works of Oscar Wilde

Grewar, Debra Suzanne 30 November 2005 (has links)
Victorian society had strict written and unwritten laws about what was permissible in terms of personal relationships. Anglican patriarchal church values governed behaviour between the classes and enforced codes of conduct on gender related boundaries of private individuals. Society subscribed to the traditional family of man, woman and children in the context of marriage. Homosexuality amongst men was punishable by prison. Government and religion preached Christian morality, yet the number of prostitutes had never been greater. This dissertation explores the problems of a pro-homosexual and anti-establishment Victorian author writing about human relationships forbidden by society. It exposes the consequences suffered by Oscar Wilde due to his investigative insights into the `Other' in the context of individual rights of preference in regard to sexual orientation, as expressed in selected texts, and his resolution of conflict, in De Profundis. / English Studies / MA (English)

Godoy Arenas, Claudio January 2011 (has links)

Arquitetura em transe: Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Vilanova Artigas e Lina Bo Bardi: nexos da arquitetura brasileira pós-Brasilia (1960 - 1985) / In between architecture. Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi e Vilanova Artigas: Brazilian architectural nexus after Brasília

Rossetti, Eduardo Pierrotti 18 December 2007 (has links)
This thesis focuses on Brazilian post-Brasília architecture throughout Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Vilanova Artigas and Lina Bo Bardi\'s architecture. They are the most important vectors at the architectural field, so their projects have an extraordinary possibility to reveal architectural nexus in a current transformations and complexities circumstance. So their architectural contributions also become a strategic key to realize emergent and pulsing questions at that in-between post-Brasília gap that Brazilian architectural field had come into.

Interpretações da revolução mexicana: as leituras de José Carlos Mariátegui, Tristán Marof e Oscar Tenório / Interpretations of Mexican Revolution: the analysis of José Carlos Mariátegui, Tristán Marof and Oscar Tenório

Streich, Ricardo Neves 14 August 2015 (has links)
This study aims to compare the interpretations of the Mexican Revolution made by three exponents of the anti-imperialist ideals in Latin America of the 1920s: the Peruvian José Carlos Mariátegui, the Bolivian Tristán Marof and the Brazilian Oscar Tenório. From their writings on Mexico, we analyzed how they reflected upon the political meanings of the Mexican Revolution within their own countries. We have also observed how their interpretations of Mexico Revolution sustained their political positions both in their own countries and in a continental perspective. In addition, we have demonstrated the circulation of political ideas in Latin America, showing the singular importance of the Mexican Revolution for the generation of intellectuals of 1920s.

Fundação de São Paulo, de Oscar Pereira da Silva: trajetórias de uma imagem urbana / Fundação de São Paulo, by Oscar Pereira da Silva: trajectories of an urban image

Monteiro, Michelli Cristine Scapol 13 December 2012 (has links)
The theme of this dissertation is the study of the social circuit of a historical painting with a urban representation motif. It discusses the painting Fundação de São Paulo, concluded by the Brazilian painter Oscar Pereira da Silva in 1907, and belonging to the collection of the University of São Paulo\'s Museu Paulista (São Paulo Museum). Produced in a moment in which the political and economic success of the São Paulo ruling upper classes was associated with the construction of a heroic past for the São Vicente and São Paulo captaincies, this painting integrates itself with the production process of iconographical representations that intended to offer a visual narrative for this past. Its museumization permitted a continuous social appropriation process, that allowed its integration with the São Paulo state\'s and city\'s imagery. To browse through this painting\'s content (composed by its conception/production, exposition, critic fortune, aquisition, museumization and reproduction) is this work\'s goal, since the picture is one of the main sustainment of the representation of founding moments in urban spaces produced in republican Brazil, and keystone to the images\' corpus that supported an imagery for the country, the state and the city.

Mode som narrativ : En analys av modets roll i The Picture of Dorian Gray

Jansson, Isabelle January 2015 (has links)
My aim with this study has been to examine how the fashion is a leading component in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. I have studied the role fashion plays in the novel and in which way it can be seen as a way of letting the reader know the important role of fashion in 19tcentury England and the morals of Oscar Wilde. To prove my thesis I have used literature that shows how Oscar Wilde uses influences from his own life in his writing of The Picture of Dorian Gray. I have also used Judith Butler's theory of performativity in analyzing the characters in ordet to display their way of staging themselves and their lifestyles and their dependence of that performativity in their interactions. Even though the theory of performativity often is used to hold the importance of the sexes, I have concluded that it has an important role in the novel when Dorian Gray interacts with the character Sibyl Vane who is an actress. My results have shown that fashion in the novel is often a way of letting the reader know important elements of a character in the way that certain fabrics and items are mentioned when Wilde writes about his characters. I have also found that fashion is an important factor when the characters judge each when they speak about the way they dress. The way fashion is presented in the novel is important to my thesis and has shown me how fashion can be used in literature as symbolic elements guiding the narrative. Keywords: Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Fashion in literature, Performativity. Judith Butler

Une indicible monstruosité : étude de cas de la contreverse médiatique autour d'Oscar Pistorius (2007-2012 en France) (2007-2012 en France) / An unsayable monstrousness : case study of the media covered controversy regarding Oscar Pistorius (2007-2012 in France)

Issanchou, Damien 16 May 2014 (has links)
Sport is acknowledged, by an increasing number of sociologists, as an heuristic way to understand contemporary societies. During year 2007, sports institution was faced up to a particular situation. Indeed, Oscar Pistorius, a double legs amputated athlete with artificial lower limbs, takes part in « able bodied » competitions (international athletics meetings). The singularity of this situation causes media covered controversies regarding legitimacy of his involvement. The study of this case, based on a « pragmatic » approach, highlighting what those controversies show from sport in contemporary societies. The analysis of media speeches about Pistorius reveals that this athlete poses a sports categorization problem. Indeed, on the one hand, the performances he produces distinguishes between him and « disabled athlete » category and seems to allow to put him in the « able bodied » one. But, on the other hand, his artificial limbs prevent from validating this sports classification. Despite the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport which autorises him to take part in all athletics competitions, the persistence of controversies shows that Pistorius’ situation gives a breach of sports understandability. Then, this situation has to be understood like a monstrousness, in the Foucaldian sense of the word, because it messes up the required definitions to think sport. Challenging sports institution basis, thus the disputed pistorius’ situation reveals the way in which sport sets athletes in order. More exactly, this monstrousness proves sport inability to take charge of the efficient fited bodies radical difference.
